For a college town, it's a typical coffee shop with plenty of tables and caffeine to keep the youth of today energized on finishing their term papers or whatever college kids do these days. This place honestly seems like a great place to come with a few friends to hang out or maybe just you with your books and stuff to knuckle down and ready/study. The place was rather empty when I came which is how I like it but it was dead silent save for the sounds of machines behind the counter. Some light music would have been nice to hear. read more

Cute coffee shop in the University shopping center. After a quick lunch at Taco Bamba, we walked 3 doors down for coffee. I think this shop has been around for years maybe under a different name but the indoor space is the same. When we order to drink in, they serve coffee in these cute large cups. They also have options like coconut and almond milk. Just be sure to ask. Coffee is tasty and hot. Some of the fabric chairs could really use a cleaning but I honestly am not sure if anyone notices. They also sells sweets and possibly other savory foods. Parking is challenging in this shopping area because of the many food options. read more

Been going to this establishment for several years whenever I'm in the area since my friend went to college at gmu across the street years ago. This time, i went and was looking for recommendations since i wanted to try something different. I was struggling on figuring it out, but David was extremely attentive and hospitable and very patient with all my million questions. He recommended the Nutty Giraffe(love the name btw lol), which is basically a receese latte. Best. Recommendation. Ever. I'll definitely be coming back more often for the Nutty Giraffe, and for more of David's recommendations. Love this place, thank you David! read more

I've been here a few times because it's near one of my accounts in this plaza and let me tell you I'm always greeted nicely by barista David, He helped me find a caffeinated niche that I had never thought oat milk would be that decent in a lot of his neat and deliciously interesting recipes he came up with. Also with those original names he's made and recommended me to try since I am lactose intolerant he made the "nutty giraffe" with oat milk and oooh wee let me tell you I'm a fan of Reese's pb cups but that drink is out of this world. Also he's got so much knowledge on coffee sold me on everything. Definitely will tell my colleagues to ditch the Starbucks and give y'all a try! read more

Friendly staff, quick service, cozy little local spot that I love to frequent. The breakfast sandwiches with sausage are often cold in the middle, which is slightly disappointing. The tables and chairs could be busted a little better. I usually have to clean after the last person before sitting down. read more

Nice cafe to get some work done and get some coffee and pastries. There is plenty of seating and plugs too. I like the decor as it felt very hip and and I also liked the variety of coffee blends they have. I got the zombie brew which was good and next time I'll try some of their latte's or mocha's. They have free wifi but it wasn't working so the employee told me to use Dunkin's guest wifi. read more

Cute little coffee shop with some WILD and WACKY flavors which just put a smile on my face. The prices for fun flavors and alternative milk isn't super out of this world so that's a plus. The coffee drinks are definitely good, and I like supporting a local business. I have yet to sample every specialty coffee drink on the menu but I have settled on the "Fireball"? I think? with a hint of pepper-- it's much better hot than cold. The Cafe acts as a full up coffee establishment so there is a very nice selection of coffees as well as complete customization for special dietary needs like Oak Milk, Almond Milk, skim milk etc. Points for making an Almond Steamer for my wife. The food was pretty standard-- mostly breakfast sandwiches on bagels. I ordered an egg and bacon on an everything bagel the last time I was there and it was okay. My wife was less impressed as her item wasn't toasted and "goopy on the bottom". I always regard food as something of an afterthought for most coffee places, as I'm ordering something they don't specialize in. The three times I've visited recently my coffee has been pretty good and very creative. I prefer their hot drinks to the cold ones. Gathering Grounds customer service is very responsive and cordial, and this is a local business I'll gladly support. They are more expensive than McDonalds or 7-11 (don't laugh; they make a good coffee now), but are about on par with Starbucks in price and I think that's who they see as their market niche. Thought it would be a good morning to try a new coffee shop prior to taking my daughter to the Easter festival at Burke lake park!! Well choosing this place was a mistake. My order was incorrect twice and the person taking orders seemed confused when I tried to explain that to them that it was wrong so when they remade it on the correct bread they left off the turkey sausage. Ugh don't come here if you want your order correct! The black woman making the drinks was the best and deserves a raise!! read more

I'm a big fan of this local coffee spot -- it's smack-dab in the middle of the University Mall shopping center, so it's a popular spot for students to hole up to study and write papers, which in turn makes me feel better about bogarting a table for my own work purposes when I come for a visit. The drinks I've gotten from here have always been good, and the staff friendly and efficient. The layout is a bit odd -- it's long and skinny with a bigger area of tables towards the back that are quite close together. It can make navigating to the bathroom a bit of a challenge, but as long as you don't stare too hard at the person sitting across from you, you'll probably make it through your study sesh without too much extra awkwardness. read more

This is a great place to catch up with friends over coffee or get some work done! The coffee is good, and they have a wide selection of specialty lattes as well. They serve breakfast sandwiches all day long. My favorite is bacon, egg, and cheese on a croissant. I think the prices of sandwiches are about a dollar more than that what it says online (mine was $6). The baristas are friendly and upbeat. I think most of them are GMU students as it is right down the road. There are two bathrooms and they're very clean. There's plenty of sitting room, both at tables and in comfy couch-like seats. Oh, and they also serve beer and wine and have their own happy hour! I think that's pretty one-of-a-kind for a Fairfax coffee shop. read more

Very friendly service. I ordered a small drip coffee, medium roast (I like that they have various roasts you can choose from), to stay and got my coffee in a mug. I sat down to do some work, there are tables available in both the front and the back. A lot of patrons are doing work or lightly chatting. But it was freezing the entire time I was there. Definitely a busy coffee shop located in a very busy shopping center. Took a while to find parking - look closer to Giant. I was able to get a comfortable chair to study. The girl who took my order was very nice initially. Within 10 mins her attitude quickly changed as it got busier, and she seemed to be fed up. I've never been here and didn't know where to put my plate, and when I asked she just snatched it from me. Okay? Not a huge deal, maybe they were understaffed for a Saturday. Hazelnut latte was a little too sweet. Number 11 grilled chicken was not good, unless you love honey mustard as it was doused in sauce. I did like the simple decor and there was ample seating around the store. A little too loud for studying unless you have headphones. WiFi worked fine for me. read more

Great coffee, tea and food. Renovations significantly improved the ambiance. Menu is too ambitious (too many items) which sometimes makes for long waits. Employee turnover and training issues have also created service issues. Trying to create demand and sell items not generally sought out in a college coffee shop/cafe. Talk to your people and customers and serve those needs and skill sets. read more

Owner of this establishment was INCREDIBLY disrespectful. I came in today with food from next door (after purchasing coffee from the cafe earlier) I was not aware that outside food was not allowed, so when the owner came up to me and asked me to put it away I had no problem with doing so. HOWEVER, he continued to stare at me while I put my food away and argued about how I should not be bringing outside food into his establishment. He handled this situation very poorly and disrespected me as a costumer. I have been coming here for two years and will not be coming back ever again. If the "owner" is reading this, you know who I am, and I hope you never disrespect a customer like you did to me today. read more

I travel a lot for work and came across this place. It was a Sunday very busy. I sat here for about an hour to do my work and saw the numerous times they messed up drinks from hot to cold to vice versa. Really wonderful local coffee shop. Everyone is so friendly and remembers your orders. The lattes are great and I love their seasonal drinks which they rotate. They also carry a variety of non-dairy milk such as soy, almond, and oat. It's a great place to grab coffee and get work done. In addition pastries are great. I felt like I was walking into a wake/funeral in progress. It's completely silent in there, which gives off a very uninviting experience. The lighting in the seating area is very dim, and all the previous decor and artwork has been replaced with giant empty grey walls. The only menu available is a small flip book once it is your time to place your order. The employees seem like it's everyone's first day on the job. I love supporting local businesses, especially coffee shops when the juggernaut of Starbucks is around almost every corner. This place, because it's so close to George Mason, is very hip and have tons of fun and interesting drinks with unusual flavors. When I went there they had a whole menu of marvel character coffees. I had black panther which was rich and chocolatey. They have some good baked goods and it's an all around good place to go. read more

I wanted to discover more coffee shops so after many friends suggesting that I go here, I finally decided to give it a try for a morning pick me up. I got an Iced Americano & a #4 ham, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwhich . Personally, the americano tasted too bitter/sour for my preference and couldn't finish all of it & that's also why I took off a star, but then again everyone makes coffee differently. Cute independent coffee shop in University Mall. The space is super cute and includes some cozy comfy chairs if you plan to stay a while as well as standard table tops. A large outdoor patio seating area is also available. Many telecommuters can GG their work home. The staff are kind albeit sometimes a little slow to appear at the counter. The coffee is generally good but very inconsistent-- especially the specialty drinks like lattes and cappuccinos. I feel like there is no standard recipe or they eyeball measure ingredients -- not sure but I do know the delicious latte I had Wednesday may be unreplicable (and undrinkable) when I return on Sunday. This is a great place to study, work or catch up with friends but calling a hearty "beware" to customers desiring a consistent experience. read more
