Gaudio's was our go to pizzeria growing up. We ordered several pasta dishes from there and always loved their pizza. Since moving away from the 30th Ave area for a while now I haven't had their pizza in many years. I'm so glad that I stopped by for lunch there yesterday and to grab a couple of slices! I forgot how hefty their slices can be so I was only able to eat one. The pizza tastes just like I remember it, the sauce is nice and fresh and has a sweetness to it which I love, the inside looked the same as I remember and the service was still friendly even during their busy lunch hour. The place is nicely decorated: simple with a warm and homey feel. Walking in and being 'greeted' by the server was where everything went down. It was an odd and uncomfortable experience where he tried to indirectly engage in some kind of altercation, it is okay. I'm sure it was a miscommunication although he felt the need to talk about the incident loudly with other customers and defend himself by saying he was just polite. The pizza is your typical football style pizza. I didn't enjoy it because the sauce was too sweet and even the cheese didn't have that extra flavor that keeps you craving another slice. I am nearing 60 years old and used to live in Astoria from mid 60s to mid 70s when we moved to Manhattan. What I miss from my childhood in Astoria was the great pizza you could get at nearly any mom and pop pizza joint. Well, that doesn't exist any more, especially in Manhattan, and if it does, it's probably 10 buck a slice. So, in my early golden years I have been yearning for a good standard slice of NY pizza when I stumbled upon a video on FB of Gaudio's showcasing the pizza and food and I swear the images brought me back to my childhood memories of great pizza. Well, last weekend I convinced my girlfriend to drive me out to Astoria to try this pizza. They do not disappoint! Not only is this pizza as good as pizza was back when I was a kid, it somehow tasted better! This is the best pizza joint that I have been to in DECADES! And, its extremely affordable. The people are very friendly. The guys I saw in the video were actually there working. It seems like a great friendly place that really takes care of their customers. The place is extremely clean and inviting. It's like a small intimate Italian restaurant. I can't wait to go back and try the chicken parm. This is my new go to joint! I give this a two star just because the person angering the phone was very rube and was talking like he didn't want to take my order down when I asked him how much it was he says thank you and was about to hang up the phone it's disrespectful to the customer. This is NYC style pizza done pretty well in a clean and relaxed environment. There's quite a few tables in the back and since we decided to stay the nice lady (who seemed like the manager or something) gave us table service. The most impressive part of this restaurant though were the bathrooms. We had all stopped in at one point or another and when we left we all were all like "did you see how immaculate those bathrooms were?!" And one of my friends pointed out that as we were leaving one of the staff was going in to clean it up again!! Guadio's in an oldie but a goodie, especially if you like New York neighborhood style pizza. The crust is typically medium in thickness and crispy--they way I like it. I've enjoyed meatball (homemade) and other parmigiana sandwiches. Pizza is fairly decent, not the best but definitely not the worst. So why the five stars? Well to be honest folks this place makes the single best Parmesan sandwiches that I've ever had in my life. I've tried them pretty much everywhere and no other place has ever come close. Ps. Definitely don't expect the owner who runs the front of the house to be your therapist.
