Keating Beach Park is off the beaten path at the far north end of the Hollywood Boardwalk. This park was named in honor of former Hollywood Mayor David Keating. He served as a City Commissioner and Mayor from 1961 to 1986. In 1963 he took a walk on this stretch of beach and it cemented in his mind that it should remain public. For the next two decades he led the fight to save this strip of beach from Sheridan Street to the Hollywood-Dania Beach line from Hollywood Inc., a development company that claimed they owned it, not the city. On September 4, 1981, the Fourth District Court of Appeal sided with the city and decided that the 1.5 mile of beach belonged to the city. Anyone who uses the beach here today has David Keating to thank. Today Keating Beach Park is under construction. It looks like there is structural damage to the pavilion and it is fenced off. There is no parking in this area either. The restrooms are closed and the slide is gone. Still the beach remains a glorious wide strip on sundrenched sand. This area is frequented more by locals than tourists. Here is to hopping that Hollywood gets the repairs done and opens this area back up soon.

The sand is so soft and clean, with not a single bit of seaweed. This was so surprising, as just a few miles away there was a substantial amount of seaweed. There were palm trees that offered a perfect amount of shade if you prefer to lie and read your book or take a nap on the beach. Be sure to layer on the sunscreen, I used an SPF 60, and still walked away a bit flushed. The water was very comfortable and clean. I took a swim a few times, and this is in April. Why can't every beach be like Keating Beach? But wait... there was a lady who came and was yelling profanities, I thought she was on her phone, but she was actually just venting loudly to herself. She had all eyes on her, there was no stopping her. I suppose that's one way to exercise your freedom of speech! Keating Beach is as perfect as they come. Hopefully you won't encounter the minor interruption like I did.

There was plenty of parking at 12pm on the Saturday when I went, but it was a little bit of a chilly day. The beach area was beautiful and they had some picnic tables and BBQ's by the mangroves. There are lifeguard stands and plenty of sand to find a comfortable spot. There is also the broadwalk, in which people were walking, roller-blading, and riding their bikes. I had to pay $10 to park, which would be for the whole day or even just an hour. The only thing I think that could have been improved is the cleanliness of the bathrooms. Beach bathrooms are never that sparkling clean, but these were smelly and looked like they haven't been looked over all day. So all in all, a great place to enjoy the beach if you can stand the smelly bathroom.

There was a lifeguard on duty until around 6:30 PM, which added an extra sense of comfort and safety. Across the street, there was a restaurant and bar where visitors could grab drinks, food, or snacks and bring them back to enjoy by the beach. Overall, we had a wonderful time at Hollywood Beach. My fiancee volunteered to drive and tag along and when we arrived in the late afternoon, the beach was empty of people but packed with washed up seaweed on the shore. I was a bit hesitant at first but decided to go in since I was there already. It was a horrible idea. When I got out of the water, the water was salty, seaweed all on my hair, and my body itchy from god knows what. I walked a long distance to the building where they had shower stalls and only then I felt somewhat normal. Besides my experience today, this is a nice beach to go to because they also have fishing pier and a nice restaurant. Let me know what you thought of this beach if you ever trying it out!

It was around 10am on Saturday when we stopped by because we were in the area, and we had no idea there would be a cost. From what I could see, it is a nice pier, and you would definitely get some good pictures out there, and of the city. There's a quarterdeck right in front which opens at 11am, it's smaller than most, so I can imagine how packed it must become, especially for its location! I was really bummed about not being able to go onto the pier.
