Normally 5 stars, not tonight. Placed an order online today at noon for a 6:00 delivery. Got there at 5:55, called and they said, yep, you are in for 6:00 pick up. 6:20, called again and asked where our food was. We were told one more order before us to be run out to the parking lot. 6:25pm, we finally get our order. We race home to enjoy our food and we were sadly disappointed. Came here after a yelp event across the street where they didn't give us enough food! This place can be a smidge confusing! There is a parking lot to the side and door over there - don't go in that door, go in the front door, then you are facing the menu and the cash register where you can order! We went with fried calamari and fried cod - both were very tasty with a large batter to item ratio! Woot! Definitely get the extra tarter sauce - kinda weak for a fish and chip place to charge for extra since what they give you is smaller than a thimble, but it is what it is! 75 cent PBR's mostly made up for it! :) Definitely a good grease laden meal, but good to finish off the day! read more

I went here with a friend one afternoon when we were feeling peckish... and I was impressed with the fish selection. I've spent plenty of time in the UK eating fish and chips from all points, and I have to say GB's batter rates up there with the real deal. The cod, for me, is the way forward for sure. Their chips are great -- not fried in lard, unfortunately, but nice (I had to leave some in the basket because I was stuffed -- uncomfortably so after two pieces of fish and most of the fries). I don't really go for tartar sauce myself -- being a purist, I'm strictly for the malt vinegar and salt, but that being said, my friend wanted more... she was able to get a free second serving just by asking (you can pay for a side order of about 1/4 c of sauce. Blech)... maybe learn to live without if you're a tartar sauce fan? One thing I'd love to see on the menu is mushy peas. C'mon, guys -- no respectable chippy wouldn't offer them as a side. One of my other favorite F&C stops is A Salt and Battery in NYC -- it would be awesome if GB offered freshly fried desserts, too (AS&B has snickers and some battered fruit... bananas maybe?) -- I mean, once you've started, why not go all the way towards clogging those arteries? I love the beer garden benches inside... and the fact that they serve beer is a major plus. It was pretty tasty for fish & chips. Pretty quick service too. I thought I read a prior review saying it was not greasy..............it is greasy. It is cod that is breaded and deep fried...........that is what makes it so good I guess. Anyway, I will definitely be back. Next time I might have to try something else just for why not. Oh, 1 point for you future GB goers.............if you are two people or more, get the large order and split it and it will save you a couple of bucks. Finally had the chance to try GB's yesterday. So glad I did! Having grown up in England, I have a special place in my heart for the wonderful fried deliciousness that is battered cod. GB's makes it just right; good amount of batter, not too greasy, hearty chunks of fish. My only complaint? The size of the tarter sauce. Who can make it through all those chips with a dime sized dollop of sauce? Although, special bonus that the dude (owner?) frying up the food was British. I cannot BELIEVE I have forgotten to review GB's until now. This place has reached "Institution" status in just a few short years for one reason: the food is AWESOME! Light, crispy, flash-fried top quality fish that is consistently perfect. I can't drive past GB's without getting a hankering for the grub there. I must admit that all I have had is the Cod. It was so good the first time I had it that I can't bring myself to order anything else off the menu. The staff is enthusiastic and friendly and you will get a real sense that they are proud to serve the food that they serve. They KNOW you are going to like it. Atmosphere is important, too. GB's nailed it. I love the park benches but I usually belly up the small bar area. I'm not a soccer guy but, if I were, I would practically live at GB's. They embrace the sport there. I went and got drink stood by counter saw her take money out of cash regester and fold it stick it in her pants pocket. Finally made it here Friday evening before a concert at Swallow Hill. Interesting place and we ate on one of the picnic tables in front (Bway), cause inside was full and didn't realize there was some rear shady patio tables out back. Not bad, but it was too greasy for me. I don't think all fried fish has to be THAT greasy. Batter was ok, but moist and greasy underneath, and not the best fish batter I've had on the Front Range. I'd prefer a crisper & crunchier batter. Fish itself was just OK quality and was on greasy side too. They were busy at 6:45, so our fish was fresh, so that wasnt the issue. I'll try them again in a few months and see if it's the same. Also tried fried shrimp, but wouldn't get again. Steak fries weren't exactly tasty "chips". My Wife LOVES Fish which pretty much means I love fish. This is so NOT true, but I do actually enjoy myself when I come here. Along with Superior Fried Fish (I will actually eat the Tilapia which, is an EPIC accomplishment for any Fish establishment to pull off) they have very nom Meat Pies, Pasties, Shepard Pies and various other non-gill offerings. The Sheperd's Pie is a little sweet and ... worcestershire-y for my taste but the crust is a crust lover's dream. The Meat Pies are absolutely on the mark using the same crust in a different form factor but with a different sauce (think more of a brown gravy and less of a steak sauce in flavor). Food does seem to take a while regardless of how busy the place is but I think the freshness of fried goodies is the result so I mention that as more of a "be ready to wait for noms" than a "GOD THEY SUCK" kind of comment. Also: Strongbow! (in a can... but still!) Tilapia Tuesdays cannot be beat for Fish Addicts on a budget ($1 a Piece no limit!) Their only real peccadillo is the bench seating for most tables is not terribly comfortable and the bathrooms are passable at best (a pet peeve of mine). read more

I lived in Scotland for a year, and I'm pretty sure that meat pies are the most underrated thing on the entire planet. So when I found out that there was a place in Denver serving them up, I had to get over to GB Fish and Chips as soon as I could! And it didn't disappoint. Their cornish pasty is freaking DELICIOUS, not to mention gargantuan. Yeah it was $10 for the pasty, chips (steak fries), and a drink, but that's pretty standard for lunch nowadays. This pasty filled me up and was exactly the flavors I knew and loved. The steak-fry chips were just OK, and not very authentic of what you get over in the UK, but they're very good fries and go great with salt and vinegar. I'll definitely be back for some fried fish, but I don't know if I'll be able to pull myself to order anything other than a meat pie or a sausage roll when I go! read more

When my wife first told me she that wanted to go try GB's, I whined that I hated fish and that she was only making me go there as a way to penalize me for leaving the toilet seat up TWICE that day. I was wrong! (partly) This place ROCKS! The food is alway piping hot. The fish is fresh with an excellent crunchy outer layer that isn't overly oily. The "chips" are perfect and they aren't "potato chips" or "little dinky french fries". We love GB's! read more

Checked out GB Fish and Chips for a late lunch on Friday. Oh yeah, it was Good Friday. That's why it seemed so busy. Ordered the Tilapia & Chips combo & waited. Seemed like it took longer than I thought it should for our order. The batter was hot & crispy, and the fish inside was very tender. Salivating just thinking about it a few days later. Chips were tasty with the right level crispiness. I do believe they know their way around a deep fryer. Malt vinegar, tartar sauce & other condiments rounded out the meal. Good stuff. read more

If you want to get yourself some deep fried greasy goodness, look no further! The fish fillets are quite large and the price is reasonable. I have only been to the one on Broadway, but I see they opened a new location near Sloan's lake. Definitely going to check that one out, too. Perhaps the best time to go to GB's is happy hour. Who can argue with 75cent PBRs? The only downside to happy hour is its often hard to find a seat. The staff is quite friendly, and I always leave fat and happy. UPDATE: I've gone in there twice in the last few months and, later in the day, become sick. In the second instance, I was down with stomach cramps for two days. Can't say for sure it was GB, but I had not eaten anything else in that second instance. And here's the thing. Each time, I only ordered the chips. This makes me sad. I love GB and the folks who work there, but I can't see going back after than last experience. It almost did me in. Prior to those visits... 4 Stars. GB is next to brilliant. First, the ambiance at this location is spot-on comfortable and down-to-earth. It has about seven wooden tables, a wooden bar, and a small mini bar across the front window. You sit on wooden seats or bar seats. I don't think they can fit more than 50 people in the place at a time, and folks share tables like back in the school cafeteria (though the company is far nicer). Darts in the back. Three HDTVs tuned to Setanta for football (soccer). Pictures on the walls of familiar, iconic British scenes. There's even a signed, hand-drawn print of fish. You can't go wrong. Though the interior looks old and shopworn (the kitchen is not old, and it's spotless), it is very clean... in a good way. Not in the mocking tone of the Beatles, a la Hard Day's Night, which means boring. Second, the food is good, but sometimes uneven. The fish are battered, deep-fried, and brilliant. The outside is crisp and the inside is soft and steamy. Perfect. The only quibble is the portion sizes are uneven. One time you'll go in and get big, fat pieces. The next time, you'll get these skinny sticks and leave wondering, "What was that? Did I just pay $10 for air? I'm still hungry. Best get a doughnut at Winchell's next door." The fish selections are cod, tilapia, oysters, prawns, squid, and scallops. From summer until just after Christmas, they had the best salmon I've ever eaten. Hopefully, Alex can bring the salmon back during the same season later this year. You can buy just the fish (a half order is three pieces, a full order is six), or, you can buy a meal. The meal includes the fish (half and full orders), a side (I usually get the chips, which, like the fish, are crispy outside and soft inside), and an all-you-can-sip fountain drinks (Coke products) or iced tea. For the fish, you can also get a combination, which includes 1 cod, 1 tilapia, 1 prawn, 1 squid, and 2 scallops. Next on the menu are English specialtics, which may be ordered a la carte or as a meal (with a side and drink, as with the fish). The choices are Bangers, Shepherd's Pie, Pork Pie, and Pasties. The Bangers are very tasty, indeed, and you get a healthy portion. The Shepherd's Pie is, well, nothing to fly to England about. I can make one at home for a fraction of the price. I've never had the Pork Pie. The Pasties... now, here's a problem. I've had them twice, so it's not quality control. It's the recipe. The filling may be awesome, but I wouldn't know because all I can taste is the pastry. It's thick and dry, and tastes like cardboard. There's no getting past it, and it may be masking something awesome inside. The problem may be that we live at altitude and the dough rises too fast, or it may be the opposite. It may be they use too much flour to keep it from rising too fast. Both are common problems that are easily addressed. But, they must be addressed... especially at $6.50 for one a la cart, $9.00 for the meal, and $17.50 for three (frozen, to cook at home). The sides include chips (perfect), mash potatoes (nothing you can't make at home with a microwave oven, a potato, butter, and a potato masher), crisps (haven't tried them), coleslaw (fairly tasteless, small serving of cabbage with mayo and maybe some salt and pepper), and baked beans (also haven't tried them). GB serves soft drinks, wine, and beer (domestic and imported). They have a happy hour when the Rapids are away and on telly. On those days, it's happy hour all day. They also serve New England Clam Chowder. I must try it. There's a kids meal (fish, side, and drink). And, you can buy frozen bangers, pasties, and pork pies to take and bake at home. Third, the staff are some of the nicest people you will meet. Carrie at the front counter is a lovely person. The guys cooking in the back are, too. Just nice people to talk to. If you give them a chance, they will make you feel like you're one of the family. Overall, I'm a fan. A few things need fixing, but I think they're fairly easy to do. My boyfriend's truck got broken into the other night, so the next day, when he had a craving for fish and chips, I decided that I was obligated to oblige him. Being new to fish and chips, and a hesitant fan after my previous two experiences (The Cheeky Monk, which was tasty but expensive, and the Bull and Bush, wich was only so-so), I was debating where to go when I remembered that Yelp had a "best of" winner under the category of fish and chips. Voila. Dilemma solved. GB Fish and Chips is right across Broadway from Pasquini's (where E and I went on our first date...Aww :) so I figured that if the original plan didn't work, I could high-tail it across the street for some yummy cheese-walnut ravioli. That was until I walked into the amazing aroma of GB and saw that they were serving...Guinness. I am a big fan of Guiness stout, because I think it tastes like the best chocolate milkshake I've ever had, and I am more than willing to fall in love with a restaurant that serves it. I fell even more in love when I had their fish and chips. Being a minimalist AND a traditionalist, I went for the traditional cod, and oh, I picked well. It was lightly fried in a delicate and very tasty batter and I gobbled it up with a dollop of tartar sauce. So good. E got the combo meal, with fried scallops, squid, cod, and halibut. I had a bite of each and must say they were all good (but I still thought the cod was the best!) The chips were thick and tasty, and the beer tasted delicious. We both started with Guinness but E also had a Boddington's (English beer) that was pretty good too. And the orange-almond cheesecake was TO DIE FOR. I'm a big time fan of fish and chips. I'm also a big time fan of "we do 1 thing but we do it magnificently" eateries. You can get a 3 piece order, a big ol basket of fries, and a drink for 9.99 tax included out the door. Thing is, these fish pieces are delicious. This joint is always busy whenever I ride by and since they're busy, the stuff is always straight from the fryer. The fish was just delightful. Just enough extra breading to give some bites an extra crunch. There's other stuff on the menu, but it's primarily fried seafood fare. The decor is pretty cool, if not a bit stereotypical. I like the counter service style they have, it's efficient and you pick up your food directly adjacent to the condiment station. I wish there was one on the north side of Denver. That would be great. FINALLY!! I made it to GB's... thanks Yelp! I've been driving by this place for years and my time finally came! Awesome. The atmosphere alone was worth it. Football jerseys all over the ceiling, a really cool inside and a nice cozy patio out back, there's also a patio out front facing Broadway (maybe not as cozy, but much more fun). We must have got there during the lunch rush, because the place was packed (it was on a Sunday around 1330). Seating was limited and they have giant 8 person tables with a high-top or two in the back. But, like I said it was jumping. The staff was helpful and courteous and so were the patrons. Having never been there I asked a nice couple what they recommend and what they got. It made the first time a lot less intimidating. I wanted to try it all having never been there... buuuut, I didn't have 150 bucks to blow on lunch..... So, we decided to get the combo platter with chips, coleslaw and the bangers. That's the way to go if it's your first time there, a nice variety and you'll be stuffed. All the fish was super fresh and super tender. Their chips are awesome, the cole slaw made fresh (from scratch I'm guessing) and the bangers were a nice appetizer, but I would recommend order with extra onions (it seemed skimpy... but I love sautéed onion). The tartar sauce was surprisingly good too, which is nice. It was like a little boost to an already great lunch. Overall, I can't wait to go back and have some more.... cheers! read more

This is what I imagine fish & chips dockside tastes like. They have an excellent batter recipe that ends up really light and crackly. We probably could have ordered one half meal combo and one half all fish meal, the chips were good but didn't need two orders of them. The cod was tender and steamy inside the crisp batter. The calamari really stole the show, however, which turned out to be long strips of calamari deep fried, more like tempura than what you'd expect in TGIF-type places (i.e. calamari rings). The ambiance is very British football centric, which lends an authentic feel. At least it's not cricket. The John Cleese letter to America was perhaps a bit dated, but hilarious reading while you wait for your food. Oh yeah, the tartar sauce was excellent too, but it took a while to find it. I enjoy eating foods that make me feel manly. Street tacos and burgers. Fingery, messy, inexpensive, off-the-street type things that aid in my feeling rugged, low maintenance, common, and run-down by the pace of life. Fish and Chips fall into this category. Greasy and simple. Two deep fried objects lying adjacent to each other on waxy paper, or thrown together willy-nilly into a brown paper bag to be consumed by someone wearing work boots and an orange vest. Rudimentary. One greasy step removed from being in their basest form of existence. Potatoes. Fish. Vat of oil. That'll be $6.50. In the past my desire for fish n chips has mostly been based on this desire for baseness and machismo. Because how they ended up tasting was usually a let-down. When biting into the battered fish I could predictably depend on encountering two completely separate levels of texture. One texture for the batter. Crispy. And one for the fish. slightly tough. Always tougher than I was hoping for. But at GB Fish n Chips there was only one uniform sensation. Crispy, tender yumminess with the slight hint of fish scent roaming up through my nasal conchae. I've lived in the UK and i've lived in New Zealand. But I'm most pleased with what I've found here on Colfax. As a side. I'd give anything for them to start using real potatoes for their fries. Most amazing fish and chips ever. Even though they use a heavier batter, it did not give me the heavy greasy stomach feeling I often get with other fish and chips. The coleslaw was yummy. The atmosphere was like a sports bar, a European sports bar. I liked the tarter sauce. However, there was not enough on the plate. Please stop charging a buck for more tarter sauce. We liked the ambience immediately with the brightly colored futbol jerseys and English decor. The fish and chips basket was recommended to us to try the cod. The cod was good and the batter was crisp. The french fries could have been better, they were nothing special in that they were frozen steak fries. Abetter touch would be fresh cut fries. We tried a cornish pasty which was a little bit of a disappointment when compared to the ones we had in England. The pastry was a bit dry and the filling was ground beef, carrots, potatoes and was very salty. We had pasties before with a rich gray inside. I will say that it was temperature appropriate...hot and steaming when we got it. We had the clam chowder that is made in house but the chowder was a bit watery and a big difference from the Ivar's Clam Chowder we are used to in the West Coast. Good selection of beers. read more

Every time I eat at GB's I ask myself why I don't eat there more often! Everything is very fresh and cooked when ordered, so your fried delights (I almost always go for the cod) arrive extra crispy and piping hot. I love biting into the crunchy, pillowy coating to find the moist and flaky fish inside. Since they opened several years ago they have changed the cut, so in a half-order you get three finger-like pieces rather than two planks, but that's OK, it's still plenty of food and I always leave satisfied. I've noticed other reviewers comment on the small portions of tarter sauce, so if you're a fan just ask for another cup (which holds about 1 1/2 T.) I should mention their sausage too. I've never ordered it to eat onsite, but I'll take a package home now and then to cook later. They're British in influence, too, with a grain filler added to the meat. The result is a very savory, pate-like texture that makes it awesome in to bite into ... yummy stuff! read more

Huge fan. First, I love the food. It's pub grub in a town that doesn't have a lot of great pub grub. The fish is good, the prawns are fantastic, and the bangers n mash is worth the trip. This place is getting great reviews because their food is actually good, especially the fish. What people are *not* mentioning is, the rest of the service isn't nearly as good as the food, especially if they're busy that part of that day or if you have a large order. I did have a large order but not extremely large, and it took about twice the time that the online information said it would. Maybe the service is a bit better if they're less busy and/or if you stop by in person. Don't know, haven't tried. Honestly wouldn't even have bothered if I had known ahead of time what would actually happen. Doordash guy was apparently already there at 4:53 to pick up the food and then the food was finally ready to be picked up at 5:20. (I placed my order at 4:32.) Nearly an hour wait is really just ridiculous for this type of thing. The place is close by and it was supposed to have been a really short wait time according to the initial information. Yeah. Right. And most of the wait time was apparently the preparation. What were they doing, cooking it made to order from scratch? That's not even what traditional fish and chip places *do*. I'd have appreciated the thought, probably, if they'd just let me know ahead of time what they'd be doing. Should've called the actual place itself before placing any orders online, I suppose. The food was great. But. This place needs to either get with the program and start behaving more like a real fish and chips place, or start serving regular American food instead, or better yet just sell the place to somebody else who can do a better job. I'm sorry but this is ridiculous. Oh, and also, they do *not* warn you that if you get fries you will get a generous amount, while if you get coleslaw, baked beans or mashed potatoes you will get the tiniest amount you have ever seen. Nobody really *wants* to pay thirteen or fourteen dollars for half an order and a small side, of anything, even gourmet food, if they know ahead of time that that's all they'll be getting. This place should warn people ahead of time what the actual serving size will be. If you are trying to feed a family or group of people at a low price, just don't try here. You could probably get twice the food for half the price somewhere else. Of course, then the food would probably be less good, but, you win some, you lose some. You pays your money and you takes your choice. As far as the actual food itself, the fish is practically gourmet and the rest of the food is just so-so. The meat pies are worth trying once if you've never had any. I will warn you ahead of time that there's not much meat in them and that the pastry shell is still only about half full even with the vegetables and stuff that they use as filler, so it *looks* like you're getting very much more than you're actually getting. Not impressed, thanks. I've had better than that from the frozen foods that they used to sell at the gas stations. The shepherd's pie was quite good except that it literally had a foreign object in it. Small piece of soft clear plastic which was all the way down *inside* the food so I could not possibly have accidentally dropped it in there myself. Seriously, people? What rubbish. Literally. Believe me, I'd have written this place an excellent review *if* it had actually *deserved* one. I like writing nice reviews. But I'm trying to be honest here, not just kind or nice. I don't want to just be generous or charitable, I want to tell the truth. This review is the truth. The three stars are because it *would* have deserved four or five if the stars had been given based on the food alone. The unfortunate problem with this place is that they are trying to be similar to a British fish and chips place only with typical American full-service restaurant prices and time frame, which is absolutely ridiculous since it does not fit with the custom they are supposedly honoring. Real British fish 'n chips places are perfectly aware that they are only cheap takeaway places and they are not trying to be anything more than that. Combining traditional British fish n' chips with traditional American expensive restaurant just doesn't *work* or at least not very well. If you're having to pay high prices because the fish is being flown in from the coast and the coast is a thousand miles or so from here, then *tell* us that and stop calling yourselves a name like GB Fish and Chips. I know this is Colorado and not Boston, but even here a simple thing like fish and chips does *not* have to cost *that* much. I'm also aware that you're in business and trying to make a profit. But this just isn't the ideal way of doing that. Real British fish 'n chips places have shorter wait times and cheaper prices. This place has the dead opposite. This is nothing like the British tradition of such places when you throw in *that* interesting little detail. Factor that in and it's just not that well worth it. read more

I have visited for lunch several times now and had great experiences every time. I think the fish (cod) is the best thing on the menu however the sampler plates are great too. Unfortunately you can spend a pretty penny on lunch here if you are not careful. They also have some decent beers and a great British pub like environment. But you'd better not be shy as the dinning room only has picnic tables and chances are you are going to be sharing with strangers. read more

I grew up in Wisconsin and our family Friday night ritual was a fish fry -- admittedly a bit different than the British orientation here. No denying the fish was fresh and the batter great, in keeping with their motto, "In Cod We Trust." But aside from that, what else is worth the trip here beyond the medical marijuana shops everywhere on Broadway? Seating is a struggle. Beer choices mildly interesting (aided by Happy Hour). Chips are not worthy. Maybe if you are a soccer fan you will like it more than I did. read more

A rustic Denver landmark worth checking out. Love the variety of batter-fried seafood fair besides the standby cod available with your chips (I prefer scallops or clams). Might benefit from a bit of a hygienic face lift, otherwise a fun place to frequent with a couple TV screens to keep abreast of that all-important ball game. read more

As I've mentioned in previous reviews I grew up on the CA coast. So there are things I'm a snob about like Mexican food, burgers and fresh fish. That said, growing up in CA there weren't any places around that I could get good fish and chips. My dad was Glaswegian and took his fish and chips rather seriously, so when we had fish and chips at home he would buy the fish and do it himself. And while his were better than any wannabe shop in CA, even he argued it wasn't as good as back in the UK. Anyone who has been to a good chippy knows how the fish should be battered and fried and how the chips should be...someone said they should have more seasoning. Wrong. They are supposed to be just chips you add the salt and vinegar to your liking. GB gets it right. I ordered the cod. Food wise they get it perfectly. This is about as authentic a fish and chips experience one can get outside of the UK. And having spent the majority of my summers and winters visiting my UK family, I know my stuff. I'm pretty sure the used fryer oil from my favorite Glasgow chippy runs through my veins. I was also excited to see bangers (!) on the menu. I will have to try them at some point. I would have given 5 stars except for 2 things. The young lady who wasn't too pleasant, which surprised me since I had heard the staff there is great...but I didn't receive that service so a 1/2 star off there. Another 1/2 star is taken off because I just checked my bank account balance and they actually held an additional 20% on my card for if I wrote in a tip. I didn't, I gave $1 in the jar which is more than the counter service deserved, honestly. I have never seen that done at a fast food type establishment. I have a lot of issues with tipping for someone ringing me up and to assume I'd give a 20% tip for it irritates me. Even though it will drop off in a couple of days, it's annoying. I'll be paying cash there going forward. Other than those minor annoyances, GB is great and I'll certainly be returning. read more
