I think our reservations were at 6:30 and it was busy then, but by the time we left, it had pretty much cleared out. Had a reservation for 5 at 5:30. Yes we were late, partly because we couldn't find parking. When we walked in, we were greeted with the statement that we would have to eat fast because they had another reservation for our table at 7:15. After we were seated the first thing the waitress said (pointing at her watch for emphasis) was we don't have a lot of time. You have to be done by 7:15. Then of course the service wasn't fast because it was full and not enough servers. We were rushed through the meal and left our table at 7:17, and they practically pushed us out of the room. There were several empty tables by then, but they had to have our particular table. This could have been handled so much better with better result. We felt unwelcome and rushed. This place is amazing. We found it through Yelp (where else?) in exploring our new neighborhood in Denver. We visited just before 6 pm on a Wednesday night. This place was PACKED! We were quickly seated in one of their shiny black booths. This place has a retro vibe, with minimal lighting, shining black booths and these epic red shades which turns the whole place into a glowy, old school world. We ordered margaritas, and a variety of entrees: my son got the chicken Parmesan, my husband got a bean and beef burrito (with green chile) and I got a Mediterranean chicken pasta dish. They offer all different types of food (Italian, Mexican and Mediterranean with our order alone), which is a benefit IF they can pull it off. And they did. Everything was delicious. My husband said it was one of the better burritos he's ever had, which is high praise from a guy who's lived in Albuquerque for more than a decade. My pasta was perfection and my not-hungry son vanished his food in record time. The service was snappy and snarky in the best way. We loved our waiter and he was always close by for frequent water refills and questions. And the best part was that he filled us in on the once-weekly opportunity to buy six big old chocolate chip cookies for $12. Done! We took them home with us and the boys have made an impressive dent in them in just one day. The only thing to be aware of is the pricing on drinks. Our (large) margaritas were $21 each. Each. Gulp. Went here this evening for my Birthday, even though it's tomorrow. I ordered the potato skins and a glass of wine, for Happy Hour. The 2 Potato Skins were $5.00 and the wine was $2.00 off. They were both delicious. For the entree I had the Beef Stroganoff, which came with garlic toast. There was a lot of meat, sauce and noodles in the Stroganoff and it was wonderfully delicious. Make no mistake, this is a destination for an older generation of Coloradans. This place has been here for a long time. We love the old school places. The food was mediocre, at best. I opted for a prime rib philly but was just served the prime rib version. The bread was a soft hoagie roll that wasn't toasted. The prime rib was not seasoned but once dipped in the au jus, it was salted. I appreciated that the fries were fresh but the majority of them were the splintered off pieces which were essentially tiny potato skins. They weren't worth the time or calories so they were not consumed. The worst of it was that the ketchup bottle was filthy. And somehow, you could see that the ketchup was bubbling in the bottle. It was clear they were refilling the bottles with the remaining ketchup still in there and not cleaning them out. We have never seen anything like that before and it was especially off-putting and now what I will associate with this place. The bathrooms were worn but very clean though. I am glad we checked the box as having visited but the food here is fairly mediocre and carelessly prepared. The service was okay but it was clear that our server was in the wrong profession. I've been coming here with family for years, and it hasn't changed a bit (in a good way). This is a place that is packed on the weekends, and it's for a reason. The crowd is typically older, but is very family friendly and can get pretty loud. Plenty of bar seating, and daily happy hour from 2-6. The food is something you can't find in Denver much anymore. When they say lounge, they mean, lounge! The ambiance inside is dim and moody, with cozy booths and ambient red lighting. It felt like I was transported back in time and the bar was quite lively. The service was nice, not overly attentive but helpful when asked. We had a variety of food at the table. The sweet potato fries were possibly the best I've ever had. The Tuscan chicken bowl has the potential to be better, they didn't drain the quinoa very well so it was liquidy and lacked flavor. The bbq ribs were fantastic, falling off of the bone and juicy. The sandwiches were good, nothing extraordinary, but a reliable menu item. The schnitzel was tasty, the mushroom sauce was delicious, the cabbage was a bit mushy and I wouldn't recommend it alone. Everyone is very accommodating. Our waitress was efficient. Our food came out quickly and was universally great . The group likes Poppy's a lot. The menu is varied so there's something for everyone. Beware! If you go at lunch time, and would like to chat with others at the table, the LOUD MUSIC VOLUME will make it just about impossible to hear them. I love [all kinds of] music but this insensitive high volume made many people uncomfortable and frustrated. We did mention it to our server and someone did turn the volume down, sadly, only a hair. Why subject us to such an inconsiderate annoyance? We've been to Poppies a number of times for lunch and music levels have often been loud. Last Friday, early evening I ordered the grilled salmon. It was brought to the table maybe 2 minutes from the time I ordered. It was pre grilled and microwaved. It was tasteless and chewy, not flakey. I grill fresh salmon at home and would never microwave salmon. Also, my friend and I ordered apple pie. He didn't want his warmed, but I did.
