Kevin is a phenomenal outdoorsman whose experience, extensive knowledge, and professionalism were evident throughout the winter hiking / snoeshoeing experience I did with a small group he led in the Catskills last weekend. I signed up for a day-long excursion to Slide Mountain. For a reasonable fee: I was picked up & dropped off at a convenient location and provided with all the outdoor gear I needed for the trip, i.e. snowshoes, walking poles, microspikes and crampons. The group was small - 4 of us total - which made for a more chummy experience. I love the outdoors and grew up camping in the summertime- but wanted to whet my appetite for snow sports and outdoor winter activities. This is perfect for a fit, active person who likes the outdoors and wants to try different things out before committing to purchasing equipment. Having the proper gear prior to these excursions is crucial and owning it can become expensive. This is a happy medium where you can try things out before making the commitment. If you get a good group dynamic, you can end up with built-in hiking buds, which is a huge bonus :) I cannot recommend Gear To Go Outfitters enough for renting outdoor gear and especially for their guided trips. I think this will be the first of the many and have definitely opened up an entire world of outdoor winter activities for me! read more

Upon reading this review, the owner proceeded to call me at my work upset and actually did admit that they were wrong and they were the ones that made a mistake but then, instead of saying he was sorry that we had to deal with such an inconvenience on our trip, he proceed to do the following: 1. Told me he had found out where I work and told me he will proceed to go to all of my company's Yelp pages and threatened to make up false ratings. 2. Called me names on the phone and refused to let me talk. 3. And actually, accused me of stealing stakes (that were never actually given to me) and ended up charging me MORE than the original rental. (which I will try to dispute) 4. Threatened to sue me for writing the yelp review... Told me that he is a lawyer and will sue me for everything. I've never had a business owner act so unprofessionally and in such an undignified manner. I would have gladly updated this review with a positive if he had approached this in a fair, polite manner. Instead, he insulted, threatened and even charged me more money because he had the ability to. He used the excuse of "damaged items" (btw, one of our tents came with a hole patched with scotch tape), and claimed we stole stakes from the tents. When I told him that we never received stakes, he flippantly told me "Well you signed the delivery papers, it's not my problem! Why don't you look around harder, check your car!" ... we had never received stakes. He then proceeded to charge me $163 for the "stolen" stakes. I am glad I had the thought to record the entire phone conversation. I only wish Yelp had an option to post the recording... There are many other places to rent your tents from, save yourself the time, money, and after-trip stress. They are thieves... read more

And wrong sized tents, which ended up having a part of our party to sleep in cars. NOT COOL! This place is first rate, and I am so excited to have a place to go in Brooklyn for camping gear where I know I'll get a good deal and fantastic service. What's awesome: a), they're in Brooklyn, b) they're a small business and not a giant corporation, c) everyone working there is a licensed guide (and they offer trips), and d) they RENT out all kinds of gear at ridiculously reasonable prices (including ridiculously reasonable security deposits - move over EMS!) I've called the store twice with questions and received really friendly, helpful service. I stopped by tonight to get fitted for a backpack, inquire about a tent, and ask about a gazillion questions about sleeping pads, bags, stoves, cookware. In short, it was one of the best shopping / customer service experiences I've ever had. Lou was awesome - attentive, patient, helpful, managing to help me and another customer while making us both feel welcome and attended to. He went the extra mile to make absolutely sure my pack was the right size and fit for me, making adjustments as necessary and making sure it felt right to me with weight in, up and down steps, etc. He wrote down everything so that next time I rent a pack from them, they'll know (and I will) exactly how to fine tune the pack for me. He showed me every pocket and feature of the pack. He gave me a demo on a Jetboil stove system and let me take it all apart and put it back together. (and I'll likely be buying it because of being able to have that "run through.") He let me test out several sleeping pads and explained their differences to me. I kept him busy for what had to be close to an HOUR, during which time he demonstrated, suggested, explained, and was incredibly friendly all the while. He had excellent recommendations and ideas, and yet I never once felt like he was trying to "sell" me on stuff. Nor did I ever feel rushed. No, they don't have an enormous selection of stuff, but I don't want to be overwhelmed by dozens of choices - I'd much prefer having a few great options. I felt really confident that the things they carry here are chosen because they are tried and true, excellent quality items and brands that you can trust. The option to rent gear is really sweet too - I don't have the dough to buy everything I need for a trip and I don't do enough backpacking / camping to warrant buying all the gear. One more thing - I am so tired of staff who are more interested in their cell phone conversation / what they're looking at on the computer / their conversation with co-workers / than helping me. I also feel that I've encountered a sort of "gear arrogance" from staff at other stores when I'm asking simple questions. Not one of these things happened at GTG. Case in point: "I've done a lot of research on tents and you carry one that I'm particularly interested in...I'd really love the chance to see it set up and take a look inside (I'm really tall) to make sure it would fit me and that it's what I want. (REI does this for customers all the time - not an unreasonable request.) Guy at Paragon Sports: "Are you going to buy it? Because we don't really do that unless you're going to buy it." ????? Um....I MIGHT buy it, but I'd prefer to set it up here so that i know for sure rather than buy it, take it home, set it up in my living and possibly having to end up returning it... Thank you, Gear To Go, for being fantastic, knowledgeable, friendly, reasonably priced, incredibly helpful, and passionate about the outdoors. I thoroughly enjoyed Gear to Go Outfitter's orienteering class and was impressed with the patient, thorough and fun approach to learning that Kevin and his assistant provided throughout this daylong event. Kevin really knows his stuff. But knowledge does not automatically make for a great teacher. Kevin is a great teacher because he imparts his knowledge in a clear, easy-going way that creates a relaxed learning environment. The class was well-organized, with plenty of room for questions and plenty of practice opportunities. Overall, a first-rate introduction to the topic. It's great to have a local business providing learning opportunities for being in the great outdoors safely and with the right information in hand. Look forward to more classes down the road! Gear to Go Outfitters may be Google's number four search result for 'camping rental equipment new york', but they're the number one search result for my heart, and the hearts of my nine closest friends, and also 'camping rental equipment brooklyn'. Without Gear to Go Outfitters' help, our novice but optimistic crew of ten would have ventured into a completely different trip. We would have been without our cast iron sandwich baker, the cornerstone of any grilled cheese enthusiast's arsenal, and main provider of thoroughly enjoyed sustenance for the group. We would have labored through two days of gathering firewood if not for our trusty pink and orange children's fishing rods to relax and enjoy. And of course, we would have arrived shelterless and without sleeping pads to protect us from persistent tree root systems, ensuring the need for years and years of chiropractic tinkering. In other words, Gear to Go Outfitters enabled us to have an excellent weekend camping trip. They're kind, informative, and most importantly for me, forgiving of ignorance and bubbling with insight. Terrible customer service. Rented two 6 person tents but received - 6 person tent along with a 4 person tent. Did not receive a refund for the difference nor the inconvenience. Terrible business model and service. Would much rather give my money to their competitors. Save yourselves the stress and hassle of being treated like a second rate citizen. Once they have your money, customer satisfaction ceases to exit. *UPDATE* As if the terrible customer service and satisfaction was bad enough, the onslaught continues a day later by this establishment falsely claiming that stakes were lost. Even though there were no stakes provided to lose. But this must warrant extra charges on top of the original pricing for two 6 people tents while not receiving two 6 people tents. We were in Brooklyn for a day and needed to get backpack covers. REI was too far, so we decided to look for something closer. This is how we found Gear to go Outfitters. The man who served us (I guess the owner) was very nice, he gave us exactly what we need and showed us how it worked. He even answered all of our backpack questions. The store has equipment for sale and for rent. and it has a pretty dissent selection of backpacks and camping / hiking accessories. We don't hike (yet) or camp , we are just using our backpacks to travel. But being in that store, just made me want to go hiking and to learn everything about it! read more

I bought a back pack for my son, water proof gloves, and out door sleeping bag, I'm a satisfied customer and you can get the items you need right here in Brooklyn take the #2 train to Grand Army Plaza and walk through the new and improved Park Slope and bam you're there. 3 Day Hike for Memorial Day in the Berkshires. The group was small, and the bang-for-buck factor was excellent. 1,200 bucks worth of rental gear, transportation to and from the Appalachian Trail, guidance on trails and with equipment, hot meals made on trail, some campfires, and tutorials on surrounding land structures and plants was 300 bucks. The hiking culture is great, with very friendly people. Great views, fresh air, and a good getaway from the city. I'd recommend a hike with this company highly. One note of caution - if you're not in good shape, either sign up for a swimming hole hike, or (1) put on a backpack, (2) put weight in that backpack, (3) run some stairs with it on. Tougher hikes will only be enjoyable if you're able to complete them, so if you're really trying to log some mileage, condition yourself. Happy Hiking! read more

Lots of great Mammut and other tools you'll be hard pressed to find elsewhere. We did a night hike with Kevin up in the Hudson Highlands and had a solid trip. I first got turned onto gear to go when my son was enrolled in their inaugural afterschool wilderness class, led by Kevin and one of his associates. My son loved the class and would've signed up for future classes except that it conflicted with his afterschool schedule. Kevin is an amazing leader and educator and was brilliant at handling a group of nine-year-old kids. I've since shopped on multiple occasions in the gear to go store. I can usually find what I'm looking for and if I can't the helpful sales personnel will either offer an alternative or the option to order the item I need. All the staff is very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. They also have this great can-do attitude and a very customer focused. I once came in just as the only associate on staff was heading out to lunch. I offered to come back later but he insisted that I stay and he would take his lunch later. Went on a hike with Kevin and Asa (the team) yesterday to the shawangunks catskills. FANTASTIC trip. Everything was so well organized. There were an elderly couple with us, so Asa stayed with them in their place and Kevin took us ahead. They also modified the trip for them a bit so that they still got to see the most beautiful sights and not be a part of the more strenuous hike. The hike itself was spectacular. They managed to combine 2 different hikes in one. The food was great, complete with desert (yes, they do prepare fresh food at the summit). I will definitely join them for another hike! read more

As a new arrival in New York, I wanted to get equipped and get information on the outdoors opportunities and highlights in the area. The owner, Kevin, is really friendly and helpful and gave me good advice on the key things I needed. They also run a 'trail taxi' service, taking groups to and from trailheads, and do organise hikes and trips, including to Greenland and Iceland! I LOVE GEAR TO GO OUTFITTERS! This past weekend was my first backpacking/camping trip I ever went on and boy, did I have the best time ever! Kevin, the owner and one of the guides, and Brent, who was another guide, made this trip so incredible! We were camping in the mountains in preparation for the Leonids Meteor Shower and even though we couldn't see the shower because of the rain and the overcast, I still had the best time ever! The food (that Kevin cooked himself) was delicious and seriously way more gourmet than I expected and I really had such a great camping experience. All the rental gear was included in the trip so I didn't have to worry about anything at all! Also, Kevin and Brent were extremely accommodating as guides (one leading the pack and the other closing the pack) and when I had trouble hiking in the rain, Brent lent me his trekking poles since I fell twice :(. I think in regards to the quality of the trip and the fact that meals and transportation and rental gear (which on this trip had to be roughly $200 worth) were all-inclusive, Kevin has such a fantastic rate! I can't wait to check out the Iceland trip (which according to both Kevin and Brent were their absolute favourite hiking trip ever) as well as the Storytelling hike in mid-December! I normally don't write many Yelp reviews but occasionally I'll experience something akin to what I did at Gear to Go and want to share what an exciting experience I had! Kevin led us on a great hike today to Storm King mountain. There was just a small group of us. Kevin was upbeat, totally in control yet laid back, and a lot of fun. He knew the trails well (probably an understatement) and did everything to make us comfortable... Gear To Go even makes homemade meals on the trail. Was pretty awesome. Our hike was billed as "moderate" and there were lots of challenging uphills, but nothing out of reach for some lazy 30-somethings who are modestly fit. We got a great workout. So nice to have A to Z covered by a professional, where all we had to do is show up. Can't wait to do it again! read more

I haven't been to the store, but I did go hiking with Kevin, the owner of the shop, on one their hiking trips recently. It was awesome! At first, I didn't really know what I was getting into. The hike that we did was considered moderate, so I figured that we would just be walking uphill a lot. Well, we did that... and more. We went through the woods, climbed over fallen trees, scaled up a rock formation, and even crossed a little stream. It was a lot of fun and a bit of a work out. And here is something I never thought I'd ever include in a review about a hiking trip-- lunch! I kind of thought that we'd be eating PB& J sandwiches, but Kevin did tell us that there would be tri-color pasta with homemade pesto, sun-dried tomatoes, and shaved Parmesan cheese for lunch. Ok, cool, we get pre-made pasta salad for lunch. Wrong. This guy whips out a portable stove, a pot, and starts to boil water for the pasta. After mixing my pesto with the pasta, I declined the chopped sun-dried tomatoes, but I did want cheese, which I thought would come in a plastic container and I could shake it over my pasta. Wrong again. He starts to grate a block of real Parmesan cheese. So, lunch was a highlight of the day, plus we had an amazing view on top of a mountain. Can't beat that. Then we had tiramisu for dessert, which he made on top of the mountain, too, with lady fingers soaking in espresso and kaluha, and pudding in lieu of the mascarpone cheese. It was pretty good. Anyway, it was a fantastic day away from the city. The weather was perfect, the views were great, and Kevin was an amazing guide. Without him, I'd still be in the woods somewhere in Upstate NY and I wouldn't be able to write this review. read more

I'd give it a better rating but my experience was regrettably lame. I'm down $150 and have already wasted three hours riding back and forth across town to support this "small business," might as well take another half hour to hurl my take on what I think to be a good simple argument for how not to treat customers in 2016. This is a bummer because I strongly believe that small business's should be supported if they're fair. Before I sling mud though: Super pleasant, knowledgable and helpful staff, and a totally cool selection of top quality gadgets and doo-dads. Just pray you never have to try to return anything. During this experience, the owner Kevin was "professional." Here we go: I bought a super nice state of the art $150 MSR brand windburner stove system. It broke within 30 seconds the first and only time I used it. I know MSR makes excellent quality products and that this was a very rare case of purchasing a defective item. So I went back to Gear to Go the next week to return the defective stove. A normal thing to do I assumed. The nice, almost timid, employee, tested the stove to make sure it wasn't just me not knowing how to use it. I didn't resent being judged. They claimed that their boss would take it out of their check if they returned it incorrectly. They asked for my phone number so they could have the owner call me at his convenience to discuss how to proceed. I was confused by the entire interaction because my life experience thus far had led me to a much simpler logic: You sold me a defective product. I return defective product. You refund my money and return product to manufacturer. Very easy. Very normal. But this is not the case at Gear to Go, or REI evidently according to Kevin the owner. After I bothered them for a few days by calling and actually Direct Messaging their Instagram, Kevin the owner returned my call and invited me back to the store. So I rode back to the store naively envisioning that a jovial independent shoppe owner would greet me with comforting laughter and scoff playfully at how rare it was for such a respectable product to be defective. All the while whimsically swiping my debit card back to fully refunded normality. This didn't happen. What did happen was Kevin kind of tried to resell the broken product to me by extolling it's virtues and introduce the notion that he had no further responsibility in the process of the broken object. In Kevin of Gear to Go's view, It is the customer's responsibility to contact the manufacturer and wait for them to possibly replace a defective product. In Gear to Go's view. They as an independent business cannot afford to take back a product that they can't "resell." This displaces responsibility to the customer. This also is not relevant to a defective product. It could also be what some people consider "ripping people off" or "stealing." Kevin, the owner was professional and courteous while explaining that independent businesses cannot afford to refund their customer's money when a product is defective like the internet distributors can. He used the word warranty well. In my view. It is absolutely 100% Kevin and Gear To Go's responsibility to refund the customer in full and to handle the process of returning the item to the manufacturer. That is why Gear to Go exists as a business. Gear to Go's primary responsibility as a normal retailer is to handle commerce between the customers and the manufacturers in BOTH directions. Not just the taking customer money direction. An independent business cannot simultaneously leverage themselves as an independent ethically righteous little guy entity relative to internet/big box distributors while skirting the only function of an independent business that justifies that argument: To facilitate an equitable trustworthy human experience while middle-manning commerce between customer and manufacturer. But to Kevin's credit, he calmly and generously lent me another rental stove free of charge. He also gave me the phone number to MSR customer service. A fine gesture if it didn't further reinforce the fact that he decidedly still has my $150 while I have at this point the further inconvenience and time consuming responsibility of having to communicate with a random corporation about how to proceed to potentially replace an expensive broken hunk of light weight high performance metal that I don't want or trust now. Definitely the weirdest moment was when Kevin abruptly shook my hand in a forced "we all good?" moment like a fast talking used car dealer. There's a law called The Lemon Law that protects consumers against this kind of circumstance when buying cars. To be redundant in an attempt to be clear: It is my view that it is 100% Gear to Go's purpose of existence, job, responsibility, duty, normal function, and obligation to fully refund the customer and handle returning defective products to the manufacturer. THIEVES, CROOKS, AND UNPROFESSIONAL Do yourself a favor and stay as far away from this place as possible. It is unbelievable how rude and unprofessional this business establishment is. First off, they gave us the wrong rental equipment and when we brought it up with them, they refused to refund us the difference. Not only that but he blatantly lied and stated that he included stakes with the tents we had rented, which we never received, and actually charged us for them. So, instead of being refunded for their error, we got charged MORE. Beware, if you find that you got something different than what you ordered, they will make sure to degrade you, claim you lost things that were never included, verbally attack you, and be unprofessional to you in every way possible. This is such a great shop with friendly, helpful employees! I went in for a hat, which they had sold out of - but that didn't stop them from looking through every hat just to check and make sure! Gear to Go is amazing!! My husband and I love wandering and one day, on one of our wanders through Park Slope, we happened upon Kevin's shop. We had just finished having a discussion about needing to be more aware of our money and spending, making an effort to save a bit more, yada yada. My husband noticed a sign about a sale happening in Gear to Go and, never having been inside and loving all things adventurous and outdoors, he was determined we'd go inside before leaving the area. We busied ourselves with more wandering and I hoped he would forget about wanting to go into GTG to hopefully help prevent spending said money. Fast forward to about two hours later, when I thought we had a day to be proud of in terms of not spending money. My husband insisted we go inside and while he browsed jackets, coats, all manner of camping and hiking gadgets (which are so much fun to imagine using!), I spoke to Kevin (the owner) about some beautiful pictures of Iceland he had out. It turned out Kevin had gone to Iceland the summer before to plan a group trip to Iceland for the upcoming summer (2014). Kevin told me all about Iceland: the amazing Laugavegur Trail, the beautiful Blue Lagoon natural hot springs, the interesting history and relationship it has with other parts of Europe, and how friendly and helpful the people were during his trip there. There was probably more he told me, too, but my mind was already working hard to figure out how I could convince my husband to spend whatever money it took to get us there on Kevin's trip! I have to say, from the very moment we entered the shop and were greeted by Kevin, we knew he was a good guy. The trip to Iceland was absolutely incredible. Kevin had everything planned, organized, and ready for each of us (eleven, I think?!) who were all completely new to this kind of experience. His own experience and knowledge made him an invaluable guide and not only was he good at what he was doing, but he was kind and became everyone's friend as the journey took place. The gear he provided was perfect, the food he cooked along the trail was delicious, his advice and directions kept us safe and on track, and the friendships made were like the cherry on top! I would, hands down, recommend Kevin as a guide and Gear to Go as an outfitter. We always, always go into the shop whenever we are in Park Slope, and we dream about our next big trip with Kevin (and hopefully some of our other friends made on our first journey together, too)! I have used gear to go many times for all sorts of flashlights, hiking bags, and other hiking/camping supplies. I first went to the store just before hurricane Sandy hit. When everyone else was out of supplies, this store had them. The excellent customer service provided by Kevin, the owner, was amazing. He is very knowledgeable, caring, and patient. He is a veteran as well, so I can truly trust his advice, and its great to support those who have sacrificed and given to us as a nation. I am not a hiker, biker or camper. My idea of the great outdoors is reading a good book under a tree in Prospect Park. But Gear to Go has great stuff even for people like me. Well made, warm and attractive hats, gloves and jackets; tiny, bright flashlights that fit on your keychain; YakTrax -- a fabulous invention that allows you to walk securely on ice or in snow, and is particularly helpful right now (January); and lots of other things for non-athletic, non-adventurous semi-elderly people. Great addition to the neighborhood. Prices are MSRP, no mark up which is great and unusual for a small business in Park Slope. Needed a few things before a camping trip, even though the selection is limited, they had all of the items on my list. When you're hitting the woods, it's not about quantity, it's about quality. Kevin and Gear to Go are phenomenal. We were using light weight summer bedding when an unexpected cold snap left us needing dozens of sleeping bags at the very last minute. With very little notice, Gear to Go saved the day. Not only were we warm and cozy in the sleeping bags, we were wowed by their excellent customer service and the high quality of their gear. Just came back from a Trail Taxi adventure with Gear to Go. We had a fantastic time--and what a great idea! Did a 9 mi loop in the Gunks and loved not having to worry about battling parking and New York traffic to and from the hike. The van was clean, the driver lovely and professional, and we even fit in a snooze on the way there AND back. Perfect way to spend the weekend, and well worth the money--we will definitely be back! read more
