Had dinner at there sidewalk bar area last night. The Spinach with Walnuts was very good. The Tartare of Lobster was excellent. The Grill Squid was the best we've had outside of Barcelona. The Turbot had just the right crispyness and the Suckling Pig was juicy and flavorful. This place is just down the street from the touristy restaurants on Nyhavn. I would recommend having a drink at Nyhavn for the ambience and then go experience great Scandinavian food at Geist! read more

Blew my expectations. Didn't expect so many vegetarian dishes to be this good. Be sure to try their spinach and avocado dishes. Considering the quality of the food I am happy to pay the price. Update: I revisited Geist and got some of the same dishes. Unfortunately, they were not as good as the first time. Perhaps because the head chef was on a trip out of town. They were wonderful and got in our party of 5 without a reservation! The cocktails (we each tried something different) were perfect. We decided to order and share about 10 dishes. They were all good - but the burnt corn, spinach and kale dish, and the saluted pig seemed to be the crowd favorites. The price was about $2200 dkk. Which averaged to about $100 per person. After two weeks of really lovely copenhagen food experiences (we had some tasty organic company lunches delivered into the office, dinner at the Lab in cph, streetfood on the paper island, french cuisine at the lalala and so on ... just to name a few) I am really sorry to say this but for me these courses we had here were the least impressive dishes in a long time -with the exheption of the wasabi toffee - which blew my mind! This dessert is a 5-Star finish for sure but the rest was very bland and actually increadible boring in terms of taste. The names of the dishes promised so much and delivered so little. I had the black horseraddish with oysters (i only saw and tasted some raw white horseraddish and no oysters), lobster and mashed potatoe (again, no idea where the lobster ingredient was), sauteed spinach (that was good but I could've cooked that myself) and 1/4 Cauliflower with a sauce (no idea what was in there) and apparently summer truffels which I could barely smell and normally the smell of truffle brings tears of joy to my face. The drinks where also absolutely nothing special. I have seen more creative drink-variations in tiny underdog bars in Germany recently. I am giving it two stars because the ambient is beautiful, the cotton candy at the end is a cute idea and the wasabi toffee was really pretty special. But since I would normally not have dessert and concentrate on the entrée and the main course , I would have been really disappointed. Contemporary cuisine at its best! Geist was the perfect venue when I took my boyfriend of that time for a surprise trip to Denmark and had my mother book something very short notice for us. I was amazed at their approach on 'low key' presentation and simplified ways of using food as functional used metaphors in their menu. The avocado pancake with caviar was outstanding. Alongside with the black rice pudding with coconut milk as a dessert. The wine selection was outstanding, in a spa-like oriental interior with water fountains topped with rose petals, sleek modern interior and dim lighting made my dining night out a special experience. At such a convenient location too, close to lots of stuffing monuments, it was rather romantic to take an evening walk outside in the beautiful city after such a delightful dinner. Worth booking well in advance, as I hear this place is becoming extremely popular. read more

They make a nice attempt at bringing an upscale restaurant to a touristy part of Copenhagen. Unfortunately, the menu leaves a bit to be desired. I am going to have a difficult time writing anything positive about this place. In general I am getting a very consistent vibe that Copenhagen is all about the visual and creative presentation of food instead of taste! Early on it's clear that it's more important about being seen here instead of actually liking the food. Our waitress was rude, couldn't answer questions about the menu and she disappeared for almost 30 minutes. Finally the food...we ordered the raw lobster and a salad for starters. I was in for a surprise when the lobster looked like someone spilled the yoke of an egg on my plate and dusted it with some cayan pepper. Obviously this is the new age Norwegian Cuisine they were talking about. Nevertheless I tried it. It had no flavor, no anything. Again, this place is all hype and no substance. read more

We stopped by Geist to grab a drink and relax after a full day of sightseeing, and were very impressed by the ambiance and drinks. I did not try the food but the drinks were delicious and fairly reasonably priced (about the equivalent of £5 for beer, £11 for cocktails). For being right around the corner from touristy Nyhavn, this is a great little respite from the crowds and seems to draw a sophisticated, local clientele. read more

There are so many wonderful restaurant options in Copenhagen that you can't really go wrong and it all comes down to personal taste. In my opinion, Geist is great. I found the dishes to be perfectly restrained and portioned. I went primarily with the vegetarian dishes (because let's be real, almost everyone can make meat taste good) and the quality of the produce really shone through. The ingredients were all familiar, but the unexpected combination of flavors were fantastic. Green asparagus and matcha? Who knew, but OMG give me MOAR! I love my veggies, but at the end of the night, my favorite dish was the young duck and beetroot; I can still taste the sweet, savory, tang. Yum. It shouldn't detract you from going, but just note that Geist is pricey even by Copenhagen standards. read more

Have I not written a review?! Oops - fantastic dinner!!! Our favourite meal in Denmark (Noma was closed the whole month of July!). We had the servers kind of order for us - making sure we got the highlights! It's small plates so you can order as much or little as you want. It allowed us to try so many different things. It's very modern - the radish dish will look like fettuccine Alfredo. The lobster has been transformed into a sea foam that your fork gathers up and it's still got its lobster sashimi meat texture! It's brilliant. The servers are all really nice too - oh and great cocktails too. Highly recommend this place!!!! read more

We were wandering the touristy area of Nyhavn, but wanted to avoid the tourist restaurants. Just a block or two down from the covered umbrellas was this restaurant, that we had read about. It did not disappoint. There is some reasonably comfortable outdoor seating, although inside the restaurant is beautiful. Since it was such a nice day, we sat outside. The server was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The grilled squid was excellent, but especially tasty was the suckling pig. The other dishes that we tried were interesting, although a bit oversalted and not especially tasty. The wine list is excellent. However, the service is a bit on the low end - we had to wait almost an hour (?!) for our already reserved table (and the staff said it "was part of the game"). Really, this should be 3.5 stars, but given the high cost to quality ration, I'm going to go with 3. Yes, DK is expensive, particularly eating out, and the $230 or so my SO and I paid is not that unreasonable, but you can get better food for this in CPH. I came here upon the recommendation of a local acquaintance- it was my only foray into the whole nouveau Scandinavian movement, so granted, expectations were high-ish. The restaurant itself was quite nice- fairly romantic, and of course the decor was quite simple. The food came too quickly, however, which it seems like a lot of places are doing nowadays. I disapprove. Dishes took about five minutes to arrive. We ordered the potato mash that everyone seems to like, the crispy artichokes with pork belly, the celery root with condensed buttermilk, and the Stilton crumble with chocolate and the salted wasabi cream toffee for dessert. Our favorite dishes were the potato mash and the artichokes, but really, I didn't find either that interesting- there was nothing on the table at any point except the artichokes that I reaaaally felt I had to continue eating. I didn't find that much complexity in the dishes, except the desserts- I think maybe the issue for the savory things was presentation, just not enough variation in textures or flavors. The Stilton crumble sounded so interesting, but was just a bit weird- not enough sweet to balance the strong cheese. Other than the excessive speed on the kitchen end, service was very good- served by lanky-haired boys in semi-clean white T-shirts. Oh, Denmark. Geist is all about aesthetics but with very little substance. The cocktails sounded interesting but tasted premixed and had very little alcohol. The savory dishes are very photogenic but are mediocre at best. The dried salted duck sounds like a charcuterie dream, but drenching it in sesame oil and soy does nothing to complement the natural flavor. The only saving grace was an outstanding dessert that was a wasabi tiramisu. On top of the food experience, the service was terrible. read more

We had a wonderful dinner at Geist on Saturday night. Don't forget to make reservations. They are on bookatable.com (somewhat similar to opentable.com). The restaurant offers a selection of dishes in the style somewhere between tapas and usual appetizer/main course fair. We had four dishes and desert. Two dishes stood out: Chanterelle soup was fantastic. Most places tend to overcook the mushrooms, but these were perfectly cooked - soft and flavorful Hear of lamb was exotic. The taste was interesting and nothing like what you would expect. We had a cheese plate for desert and cappuccino, that is served - you would not believe this - a huge cotton candy made out of real sugar, so you got to eat it fast before it melts. PS. Oh, and if you like to eat outside, ask to be seated on the patio, not out on the street. PSS. Order beer. Wine is Ridiculously expensive. read more

We had about 10 different dishes. Some were well prepared and very interesting and others were boring. Interesting concept though and nice presentations. The reason for the three stars was the service. The waitress was kind of rude and clearly showed lack of training. We have visited many restaurants in many countries in the world and are used to different levels of service. When we visited Geist we expected a certain service level based on price, reputation and location. We would expect the waiter to be well trained in basic table service - not reach over the table across people eating, provide all wine service from the right, offer to describe the plates presented, present wines ordered before opening them - basic stuff. To some customers this may not matter but it does to us. In a country like Denmark where there is a very professional education program for waiters there should be no excuse for this level of service. read more

Some of this perception may come from the limited introduction you get to the serving from the staff. Nothing tasted bad, but nothing blew me away either. Quite an experience. Nice ambience at the bar where we were served unusual and tasty cocktails. Don't expect tables for two. For our meal we sat at a bar that surrounds an open kitchen where we watched the chef and her sous chefs do their thing. The menu is divided into 2 sections and you pick and choose as many items as you want but the staff recommends three which was perfect. 5 of the 6 were excellent, including a celeriac dish and perfectly cooked beef with caramalized beetroot. The coffee was undrinkable. It was served with cotton candy, a bit of a novelty. Our wallet took quite a hit but no regrets for a unique experience. The only good things about this place... the hostess who was super sweet and accommodating about our seating, our first waiter (a super personable black guy) and the bread and butter. That's it. Probably the worst meal I have ever had. Absolutely no flavor. The bizarre "lobster" dish was laughable. I literally took a picture so I could post it on Facebook as a joke... it looked like someone spray painted a plate... and there was nothing else on it. The photo actually looked more bizarre than the real thing. It looks like someone put a jellyfish in a blender and painted it onto a plate. It tasted worse than it looked. As did the squid with mushrooms. I think they mixed both together and never seasoned then dumped a tiny portion on a plate. The next fish dish was also flavorless. The spinach salad was better than the rest of the dishes but still unremarkable. All this and so overpriced. Please do yourself a favor and just get a hotdog somewhere before you consider this place. read more

This is the sort of place you get or you don't. We got it, what a wonderful experience. Although we did not reserve a table, which you should because the place is packed on any given day, we sat at the cocktail bar and finally got a place. You order small dishes which are meant to be shared among your fellow diners and they blew us away. Fermented radish with creamed grilled oystersauce, first comment: Where are the oysters? They were there, big taste for a simple dish. Paper thin ravioli made from gruyère and put into a low oven, filled with fennel served on grilled turbot. Fantastic raviolis and equally stunning presentation. Enoki bouillon and duck breast, Truffel sauce and chargrilled cauliflower and the best was our dessert, salted wasabi cream toffee. That one dish blew us away. Just fantastic food and a great atmosphere. Not cheap though. read more

Loved the ambiance and vibe. It was all great except for the food. We started with the Zucchini, which was bland. We then shared the Squab and the Fried Egg appetizers. We then decided to try a dessert. The waitress said her favorite was the Toffe/pistachio with some type of cheese on top. It was just ok and not worth the calories. I think we are spoiled by living in NYC. Overall the meal did not live up to NYC standards. Wish no stars was possible. Told it would be a twenty minute wait and to grab drink a bar. Then twenty minutes goes by, and the host claims "it may be longer". No problem, so we got another drink. An hour goes by and nothing has happened, people are being sat that have came after us left and right. So I proceed to go into their website and make a reservation that was available for 8:45 (it was currently 8:30). Still was not sat even though I TECHNICALLY now have had a reservation. Hostess has claimed "it doesn't matter if you have now had a reservation". So you're telling me if I was a normal customer that had made the reservation and showed up at 8:45 (my reservation time) I would be told I wouldn't be sat? ABSURD! I have never been so disappointed in an establishment in my life. If you ever travel to Denmark, stay clear of Geist, they will lie to you about any sort of time wait or reservation. Terribly understaffed, no management on site. I'm guessing the food is awful too! read more

We were a few minutes early for our reservation at Geist. That was ok as there was a great bar to wait at. We grabbed a table to have some drinks and were joined by some locals who were hanging out before dinner at a nearby restaurant. Apparently the host then assumed we were joining then and gave away our table. We checked in with her 30 min after our reservation time and she apologized and assured us that she would have our table in a couple of minutes. Another 20 minutes and several other parties sitting went by...went to ask again and was told by another host that the system was glitchy and that was the problem. Let her know that actually the problem was that her colleague had forgotten us. We were finally seated about 55 minutes after our reservation. It would have been great if the delay was acknowledged...maybe a glass of wine, dessert, apology, but apparently annoyance that we were still there and throwing off the timing was more Geist's style. Dinner was good, some parts were great (ravioli and turbot), waiter service was adequate, but unfortunately none was close to good enough to overcome all that they got wrong. read more

One of the worst dining experiences in memory. Avoid this place if it looks busy. We arrived at 8:50pm for a 9:00pm reservation, sat at the bar and had a decent drink, but did not get seated until after 9:45. We did not receive our first course until 10:30 which was uninspiring. It was hard to find any salmon in the salmon and apricot tartare. The second course did not come until 11pm. We had to send three wines back. The first was corked. The second the server did not even bother to pour. The third bottle, a wine she had recommended as an alternative to the first, was also horribly flawed. The server begrudgingly took it away only after arguing that it was the "style" of wine. (We are winemakers from California and we know when a wine has gone bad -- we like a little bret but this was undrinkable). The third course came right after the second (a bit too soon), and was outrageously bad. The sweet breads were nothing but rubbery sinew and were basically raw. The pigeon was over-salted and the peas were chalky. It seemed like the kitchen got busy and overwhelmed and they were reaching into the bottom of the larder without concern for quality. The server used a potted plant next to our table to store our dirty dishes between courses. She was rude and inattentive. The hostess deserves a medal for trying to keep things together and the bartender was pleasant. read more

Our meal (tapas) started strong and ended weak. For the second time in as many days, we were served artichoke bark, which is artichoke leaves dried and then deep fried. The artichoke chips were served with a pork belly perfectly cooked. Very, very good and something I want to learn how to make. The raw fried brussel sprout leaves with coco bean was the star of the evening. We were disappointed by our third dish: salted dried duck breast with black fig. I had expectations of big flavor and this dish just fell flat. Service was exceptional! We liked the vibe and music of the bar at the beginning of the night; however, 90 minutes later a techno-track played over and over again, which sounded like a skipping record, yet was intentional. If we went back, we would be sure to make a reservation and eat at the kitchen bar. read more
