Came here for Friday dinner with my boyfriend. The historic brick building is absolutely gorgeous & the ambiance inside is very nice. To drink, he got the whiskey cocktail & I got the espresso martini-like cocktail. Both were very good & came out quickly. To eat, we started with the bread. It was worth every penny -- four brioche-like enriched dough rolls with flakey sea salt on top & served with absolutely delicious honey butter. We shared the half chicken, Brussels sprouts, and fries. The half chicken was plenty for two people & came in a cast iron skillet of slightly spicy cornbread with braised greens, all of which were fantastic. The Brussels sprouts were cooked perfectly & had Asian flavors. The fries were very good & the aioli that came with was amazing. I'm taking one star off for the service. Our waiter was ok, but at such a nice place I expect higher quality. Waiters at comparable restaurants like Adele's or Etch are very helpful & friendly, frequently checking in to make sure every dish is to our liking & offering drink & food suggestions. Our waiter at Geist did not even pour our water when we were seated (just left the water bottle on the table) & was not super friendly, nor checked in other than kind of rushing us. When we ordered our food we said we were sharing everything, but our waiter did not try to stagger our dishes at all, and all of our main dishes came out before either of us even had the chance to finish one piece of bread. #fatjared say...it might be above average for dinner, I'm not sure, but for brunch it was average for sure. I am very consistent, and have strict grading criteria. I don't just give out 5's all day. If I have 1 complaint, even something small, I will not give 5 stars. 5 is perfect, and if I complain it's not perfect. For Geist, there was a consistent theme my wife and I recognize, and it was no real precision in what they did. Saturday in Nashville is going to be busy. We know that, and the bartenders were honestly doing a great job, but the glasses were being reused very quickly after a not so thorough wash, and ours were a bit murky. Not very precise. I ordered the wiseacre (GREAT Milk Stout) and my wife got pleasure point (not really my jam but good). After that came the deviled eggs. I really enjoyed them. The bacon was crispy, the yolks were creamy, chives added freshness, and a bit of spicy sauce. 4 bites for $10 is not terrible either for Nashville prices. We then ordered the Chilaquiles. On the menu (see pic) it describes it as a crispy tortilla. When I read that it says to me an actual tortilla that the pork comes on. They just fancied it up, when in reality they threw chips in there. And yes the pork is braised, but there was SO MUCH JUICE at the bottom. It made the chips soggy and kinda bad. BUT...the flavor was on point, and the pork was amazing. Again...not precise in describing or making the dish. We finished with the banana bread french toast...WOAH!! I will say again, the flavor on point. Banana bread made into a loaf like that, with roasted pistachios and some cream. SO GOOD. but again, complaint on the sauce underneath. The bread got too soggy, and made it not as good as if it had been more fresh with less fluid. I enjoyed this place, and would go back, but I'm not raving about it. I have a friend who works with a lovely gentleman who's close to retirement. He's upper middle class, with a nice car, house, & dresses impeccably. Great taste in sport-coats! His taste in food however, is pretty restrained, bland, and overall safe. He doesn't like too much excitement- he wants safety over novelty. My wife & I were visiting Nashville and made reservations with Geist for about 5:30 pm. We were one of the first folks in the restaurant. We were seated in a heated covered patio area, with good decor and it was lovely & warm. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and really good at his job- he knew when to pop in and when to stay away. Bravo, David! The menu looked amazing. I ordered the Sea Scallops with bean purée and my wife had the halibut with butternut squash risotto and a cocktail. The cocktail was strong and perfectly made. Good work! We ordered the Barrata as an appetizer. Crusty grilled bread with a mozzarella and apples and endives. It was executed fine. The dish tastes good. It was a little clunky to eat- the cheese really didn't spread and the chunks of apples & endives didn't want to stay on the bread, which was hard to eat. The dish was good- but not super easy to eat. Additionally, I'd recommend adding more apple or limiting the acids- it was acid heavy and it needed a touch more sweetness to balance. My wife suggested peaches would work better than apples in balancing the acid. A good appetizer that needs a little more evolution before it arrives. The scallops were perfectly cooked, seared perfectly, tender and juicy, and seasoned to perfection. The same for the halibut. The bean purée was good, and the squash risotto was also good. We also had dessert: a mocha pudding/mousse with some beignets. Both were great. With that being said, I began to feel as though the dinner menu and the dishes were something my friends coworker would love: really safe and well executed dishes that would never cause anyone offense. In fact, I began to look around and realized he might have been in the crowd: all upper middle class folks nearing retirement who want a dependable safe meal that never offends. While well seasoned, the halibut and scallops really don't have much flavor. They need something to help them along, but alas, the bean purée, while good, is pretty mild and low key, and the risotto, while good, really was bland. While there was squash on the risotto, you couldn't taste that flavor in the risotto, and the cheese & broth flavors were pretty muted as well. Something can be seasoned appropriately but yet still be entirely bland. I realized that all the dishes are just too safe. There is no heat. There is no risk. There is nothing that would offend the sensibilities of an upper class person near retirement. Want to take your parents or coworkers out for a dependable meal with good service? Throw on that sport coat & come to Geist. Want to have a sexy meal that is risqué and perhaps tempts you to consider doing things that dare not be spoken of out loud? That is not Geist. Geist is a good restaurant with good food & good service. The plating is top notch and food well seasoned. But if you want something sexy or dangerous, go elsewhere. read more

Brunch at Geist has become one of my favorite weekend activities. It's the most beautiful restaurant with exposed brick everywhere and such a relaxing ambiance. They open for brunch on Saturdays at 10:00. It gets really crowded around 10:30 so make reservations if you'll be eating after that. THE CINNAMON ROLL. Gigantic. Magnificent. Drool-worthy. The brioche bread they use is decadent. We can't come for brunch and NOT order one of these big guys. Just do it, you won't regret it. (Heads up - you'll need at least 3 people to finish one.) We also ordered the breakfast corn dogs. Such a fun little bite. One order comes with two corn dogs and two dipping sauces.. the syrup is my favorite. The breading on the corn dogs has almost a crispy cornbread texture. I can't remember the name of the brunch cocktail I ordered but it was so refreshing. It had St. Germaine and aperol. We came for brunch this past weekend, and it was our first time trying Geist for Brunch. The environment here is beautiful during the day; plenty of light comes into the building, and the patio is partially covered and super insta worthy! Our server was excellent and attentive. We started with the cinnamon roll, which he advised us to only order one of, and it was MASSIVE. Like the size of a youth soccer ball- and so delicious. This thing is delicious and a must try. For entrees we ordered chilaquiles and eggs Florentine which were both delicious. I would say if you're looking for a big portion, the chilaquiles is the better bet of the two. Both entrees were $16, so a little pricey but nothing crazy. My only slight disappointment was drinks. There was no dedicated brunch drink menu or specials, and we were hoping to at least see a champagne special or Bloody Mary on the menu. We had the scallops, the tuna app, brussel sprouts and fried tomatoes. The only complaint we had is that we thought the fried tomatoes needed a smidge more seasoning. But it was still very good! If I could leave this place zero stars, I would! I was visiting in Nashville in February and went to Geist for brunch. They sat us in the covered outdoor section and had small floor heaters scattered throughout the space. All of these heaters are highly dangerous (quite honestly I plan to report them to the fire department) because as I was leaving, I pulled my chair back and when I turned to exit, my coat caught the flaming embers of the fire from these floor heaters and I literally caught on fire! My suede coat was destroyed! Not only was it terrifying but my friends had to pat me down to put the fire out! When I reported it to their management, they told me to email them to get compensated for my coat. I literally called and emailed them numerous times to date with no response when I sent them links to replace my coat. Not only did they show negligence on safety but I can't help but think that if a child was here, how dangerous these heaters are! Shame on the management team for not returning my emails or calls about replacing my coat! They are very lucky that I had friends to react quickly and pat the fire out or else I could have been seriously injured! Five stars because all four entrees our party ordered were terrific: the salmon, the scallops, the roasted chicken, and the fried pork loin were all wonderfully cooked and flavorful. Thankfully, we didn't have any vegetarians in the group, though: the options there were fairly limited, or one would need to patch together some sides/starters. We also enjoyed the cheese and charcuterie board, which was the perfect size for 4 to share. I'm kicking myself that we didn't come here sooner! (We've been excited to visit Geist since it reopened after being damaged by the tornado in March 2020, but we weren't doing indoor dining until after we were fully vaccinated.) Been here a few times and they have a great ambiance for a weekend Brunch. I like that they aren't infested with TV's so you actually enjoy your experience with the people you are with or just focus on something that isn't attached to a black mirror. The food selections are decadent though they can be pricey for what you get, if you're coming for a good time, don't worry about that and enjoy sharing dishes among the group. They also make great cocktails so come ready to indulge. There is decent parking behind the restaurant if you go early or when there isn't a Nashville Sounds game. We have been to Geist several times (brunch and dinner) and have always had great service and wonderful food. Went today to try some new summer items on the menu. Kamryn from the bar was our server and was a delight! She was very helpful and very friendly and answered all our questions. Ron, the head chef, came out and introduced himself to us. The location is perfect. It's located in the heart of Germantown right next to First Horizon Park where the Sounds play. Take a walk around after dinner and grab drinks at Neighbors, Jonathan's, Von Elrod's, or any of the other local establishments Germantown offers in that area. Or, just head to Brooklyn Bowl, and catch a show or go bowling! Parking wasn't bad either...I usually find parking pretty easily at that location a couple blocks down on 4th or 5th. QUALITY. The quality was very good. I got a steak that was was cooked to perfection. We had ordered a cold (shrimp) appetizer and a dessert as well, both of which were perfect. One of the female staff members who helped us is a French national, which gave me an opportunity to practice my French with a native speaker! First of all, expect to pay $16+ for parking because the chances of finding a free spot are not good. We sat at the bar. Cocktails were decent, but small. Ambiance was beautiful with all of the holiday decorations. Tuna crudo was yummy, but not worth $22. Our experience here was nice, but I get annoyed when a restaurant adds on to your bill 3% for something like "kitchen love". A few comments on my recent experience here. Free parking is extremely limited, so if you have to park in a pay lot it is $25.00. In my experience, staff turnover is a big issue. Of the two entrees that we ordered, one was completely inedible. In my opinion the prices are too high for the value and quality. Personally, I object to two things: this is the only restaurant that charges 3% automatic tip for the kitchen staff. If you paid an appropriate wage, this would be unnecessary. Also, I am not in favor of a strict measured pour of alcohol for a martini. A thimble full of vodka is not a good look,especially for $16.00.
