    Gelateria dei Gracchi 01-18-2020

Serving Rome from his original store at Via dei Gracchi 272 since 1999 Alberto Manassei is considered one of Rome's preeminent Gelato makers, a midlife career change seeing the former musician learn the craft from him brother while living in Sardinia. Tucked away on a side street in Prati, other Gelateria since opened including an outpost of Romana less than 600 meters away, it is inside a humble space that guests find thirty flavors daily, attention to recent trends including both Lactose and Gluten-free options. Eschewing Preservatives and Dyes, with no Ingredient hailing from outside Italy, freshness is described as Gelateria dei Gracchi's core value, though for diners not fluent in Italian this can only be teased out online as no one on-site speaks English. Famous to the point of four stores, including larger locations with seating, it was after lengthy perusal that three flavors were selected, the matte green Pistacchio di Bronte beautifully flavored yet "gummy" in texture, while Pine Nut and Dates with Walnut followed-suit with ice crystals in the latter leading one to assume inappropriate storage temperature.

Literally the best gelateria in Italy- and Italy has the best gelato in the world generally- so in conclusion - this is the best gelato in the world! We learned of this place from the late great Anthony Bourdain, and boy did we love this gem. There are no words to describe the creaminess and intensity of the flavors. The pistachio is beyond out of this world- the best thing you'll ever eat. I'm also obsessed with the hazelnut and straciatella. The service is lovely, they have a few locations around rome, but the one on Gracchi st I think is the best :) MUST HAVE IN ROME!!!

They carry some of the most interesting flavor combos we'd ever come across. Caramel pear, pine nut cream, honey and rice - it was soooo tough for us to narrow down to these 3. And we weren't disappointed - they were all beyond delicious. Pear was refreshing, cream was nutty (had actual pine nuts folded within), the honey & rice was just perfect (the unique texture and balance of sweetness) - can I get another cup please to myself?

Almost gone by the end of the night!

I stayed just around the corner from this place, but never tried it until just now. We tried a few places around Rome, and on the way back to the hotel we thought we try this hole in the wall place. Nothing fancy on the outside. Just very simple, and fairly small realestate inside and out. We go inside and we notice most of the flavors, though still plentiful, already were a lot less than any other place I've ever been to in terms of gelato, so they were certainly in demand. I also noticed the gelato was less colorful compared to other places, but I read this was a good thing. Meaning everything is more natural and the places that have bright colors is because they use other unnatural ingredients. The guy behind the counter was friendly and spoke English and understood us no problem. We got 2 cones and let us pick 3 flavors. 2.50 Euro each. VERY GOOD! Considering the others around town were more. So to some it up, it IS as good as everybody says. Heck why should you believe me or these average Joes.. Anythony, motha-f-ing Bourdain picks this place as the best of the best in terms of gelato! Each flavor was distinct, and the texture was so silky smooth. Geez, how can I explain it, it really is good compared to the 3-4 other gelato places we tried........ IN ROME, ITALY.. why would I even compare those from the USA? lol. It was nice to find out all of the celeb background behind this place AFTER we tried it so there were no expectations. Hopefully you will too, but if your reading my review, sorry I just ruined that for you.

Solid gelateria in Rome. No line when we went. Pistachio had a nice roasted flavor. Also had the pear and ricotta was very good! It was super creamy and rich with nice chunks of pear that were great texture.

Ok, so in an area with lots of gelato options, if you like it on a cone, I'd go elsewhere. They use the basic thin cone used around the world in ice cream trucks, etc. The gelato itself, though, was fantastic. I loved the orange toasted almond gelato which tasted like orange blossom! SO good! They do charge 2.50 euros for the smallest size. For 2 euros at La Romana within 0.3 miles down the road, you can get the same size gelato with a better cone and they add chocolate to the bottom of it if you like it that way! I forgot how much Venchi is, but they'll add fresh chocolate around the cone and crust it with chocolate chunks or nuts.

This place was great. Small, authentic gelato, all locals and no tourists in the shop when I was there. Got the limone and almond. The limone was good, but the almond, man it was amazing! Highly recommend. Although definitely don't take the hours listed on their door for face value, they opened more than an hour after they were supposed to.

Grab a number and take a seat. It's worth it

I left the hotel with one thing in mind. Finding the best Gelato in Rome. I searched for about an hour and a half for this place. Lots of trains, lots of walking. It would have taken 30 min to find, but my italian is rusty and my iPhone Google Maps died on the way. But when i found this and took one bite of gelato i decided it was well worth the wait. Just the line alone at 16:00 was out of the door and there were at least 18 people in front of me. I would have happily waited another hour for this gelato. Fresh, delish, perfect. Seriously there is no better gelateria in Rome. This is a MUST visit if you are in rome, you will not regret it.

Pistachio and pine nut gelatos in one cone!

In that review I warned gelato keeps melting even though it is covered in a chocolate shell. This time when I received my Black Cherry with a chocolate shell, I quickly took my photo and broke into my treat. Still got a little messy on a particularly hot day, but not totally out of control. Even eating quickly I really enjoyed my gelato with those broken pieces of chocolate shell. This previously very popular spot had no line this time, good timing for us. There is no seating so expect to be eating on your feet. We looked forward to a return visit and they did not disappoint.

Frigidarium had a small storefront with room for a few guests at a time. Our timing was lucky, because we had arrived ahead of a big crowd. When I ordered and looked over my shoulder I saw that the line was snaking around the corner. Service was fast though, so people were in and out considerably quickly. I ordered the Frigidarium flavor and one that looked like a berry vanilla swirl with chocolate bits. I'm sure my mouth dropped when they asked if I wanted white chocolate, milk chocolate, or whipped cream at no additional charge. Based on the flavor palate I got white chocolate that becomes a hard shell when poured on. Loved everything about my gelato. I enjoyed both flavors with the white chocolate, and I got a bonus chocolate cookie from the Frigidarium flavor.

Tucked along the lively streets of Trastevere, this little spot delivers gelato with genuine craftsmanship and flavors that taste as authentic as the city around you. The first thing you notice is the freshness. Each flavor looks vibrant--not overly piled or artificially glossy--and you can tell everything is made with real ingredients. One spoonful confirms it: the gelato is creamy, smooth, and beautifully balanced. The fruit flavors burst with natural sweetness, especially the mango and strawberry, while the classics like pistachio, hazelnut, and chocolate showcase that rich, deep, true-to-ingredient taste that only well-made gelato can achieve. Their specialty flavors are equally impressive--unique without feeling gimmicky--and everything is served at the perfect temperature so the texture stays silky, not icy. Portions are generous, prices are fair, and the cones have that fresh baked aroma that adds an extra layer of enjoyment. The staff is warm and welcoming, happy to offer suggestions, and patient even when you're debating between ten flavors that all look incredible. The atmosphere reflects Trastevere itself--relaxed, friendly, and full of character. Whether you're ending a meal, cooling off on a sunny Roman afternoon, or simply exploring one of the city's most spirited neighborhoods, GELATERIA alla SCALA is a sweet stop worth seeking out. A delicious reminder that some of Rome's best moments come in a cup--or a cone.
