This was the first gelateria I encountered in Rome and it defaulted as my favorite. I have a knack for knowing that sort of thing in advance (kind of like how I knew I'd like Vegemite). There were no off- aftertastes. The gelato was not crazy dense. The flavors were my kind of vibe, even though I got the same ones each time (pistachio and persimmon.) I have a theory that unconventional flavors are a sign of good workmanship since you don't have to rely heavily on people just buying the regular flavors. It's like a style thing, when you know how to dress, you go a little crazy. ANYWAY, the server was helpful as I made my best effort to fumble my order through in Italian. This was the best gelato place I've visited in Italy so far, and I've been to 4. The variety of flavors was awesome and they're beautifully displayed in the cases. They even have a WHOLE CASE of vegan options, made with soy. I opted for the lampone (raspberry) flavor, as well as one that I wasn't able to translate or identify, but was delicious and definitely vanilla based. I got I in a cup and it was served with whipped cream and a waffle cone wafer sticking out of the top. They also had an amazing pastry case! My family and I decided that we would go back to this exact place every night between now and when we leave Rome. Boring? Maybe. But if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Literally the best gelateria in Italy- and Italy has the best gelato in the world generally- so in conclusion - this is the best gelato in the world! We learned of this place from the late great Anthony Bourdain, and boy did we love this gem. There are no words to describe the creaminess and intensity of the flavors. The fact alone that both the pistachio and lemon cream rice milk gelato and apple cinnamon sorbet stood out high above any other traditional milk-based gelato I'd tried in all of our three weeks ALL OVER Italy should tell you something about the quality of what's about to be in your cup/cone. I even used to be suspect that any one place could outdo another when it comes to a single menu item, but the quality and sourcing of ingredients is bar none and kept #local to Italy. It's a favorite of Bourdain, of me, and of most anyone who's been to Italy. It's all been said, really: if you're a fan of gelato, you will love what they offer here. We first tried this place in 2010, as our hotel was around the corner, and the shop is close to the neighborhood bus stop. While we waited for a late afternoon bus ride, the locals were streaming in and out for their pre-dinner treat, and the traffic was non-stop! We took the hint and tried the gelato that evening--WOW! We went here every day during our first visit to Roma, and have rarely missed a daily visit in visits since. For our American friends, you pay first, then take your receipt to the counter. You will not get a large serving, but trust me, you'll get enough to more than satisfy you're sweet tooth. I stayed just around the corner from this place, but never tried it until just now. We tried a few places around Rome, and on the way back to the hotel we thought we try this hole in the wall place. Nothing fancy on the outside. Just very simple, and fairly small realestate inside and out. We go inside and we notice most of the flavors, though still plentiful, already were a lot less than any other place I've ever been to in terms of gelato, so they were certainly in demand. I also noticed the gelato was less colorful compared to other places, but I read this was a good thing. Meaning everything is more natural and the places that have bright colors is because they use other unnatural ingredients. The guy behind the counter was friendly and spoke English and understood us no problem. We got 2 cones and let us pick 3 flavors. 2.50 Euro each. VERY GOOD! Considering the others around town were more. So to some it up, it IS as good as everybody says. Heck why should you believe me or these average Joes.. Anythony, motha-f-ing Bourdain picks this place as the best of the best in terms of gelato! Each flavor was distinct, and the texture was so silky smooth. Ok, so in an area with lots of gelato options, if you like it on a cone, I'd go elsewhere. They use the basic thin cone used around the world in ice cream trucks, etc. The gelato itself, though, was fantastic. I loved the orange toasted almond gelato which tasted like orange blossom! SO good! They do charge 2.50 euros for the smallest size. For 2 euros at La Romana within 0.3 miles down the road, you can get the same size gelato with a better cone and they add chocolate to the bottom of it if you like it that way! I forgot how much Venchi is, but they'll add fresh chocolate around the cone and crust it with chocolate chunks or nuts. read more

Yum!! I got a small cup of three flavors: pistachio, coffee, and toasted almond orange. The toasted almond orange tastes really good, and although the almond flavor isn't very strong, they give a nice texture. The orange flavor is light but flavorful, and the almond adds a nice crunch, almost as if there are cookies inside the gelato. The pistachio is very creamy and pistachio-y, and there are pieces of pistachio inside the gelato, giving it again a great texture. The coffee though was definitely the highlight.
