One of the most famous and highly regarded gelato chains in Rome. The reputation is 1000% justified. This place is forking amazing. I got a bold flavor and a mild flavor. Mild was stracciatella which is available in every gelateria in Italy. The version here is perfectly fine ... But it doesn't take much to make a good stracciatella. The exploding taste buds flavor was mango with chocolate bits. * * * You can finish this review yourself. You know where I am going. * * * I am going back to Otaleg as many times as is humanly possible. ********************************* Footnote. There are some surprisingly whiny reviews from American Yelpers about this place. They complain because very good Italian gelato does not have the creamy texture of American artisanal ice cream. In Boston or Philadelphia, creaminess is fundamental. No rich texture and you have failed. Italian gelato is a pure taste proposition. Creamy or not creamy doesn't matter so long as your mouth explodes when you eat the stuff. I read some pretty rapturous reviews of Otaleg and was excited to try it during a visit to Trastevere. The shop was cute and tiny and I definitely got the appeal. The gelato was good too, though I had better during my brief trip to Rome, and also at a few gelato shops back home. I believe Otaleg is quite popular, but it was empty when we went on a chilly Monday afternoon in November. Service was fast and polite, and we took our gelato to the little piazza nearby, the Piazza di San Calisto. I got three scoops in a cup: hazelnut, pistachio, and the gelato of the day, ricotta cheese with almonds and grapes' reduction. The flavors were good. A nice hazelnut and I liked the slightly salty pistachio--there was another pistachio flavor, too, which was supposed to be sweeter. I didn't totally get the grape in the ricotta cheese flavor, but it was mild and pleasant. My husband got the coffee, which was excellent. I'm willing to allow that I may be used to a different style of gelato, but I wasn't totally sold on Otaleg's texture. It wasn't as lush and creamy as I like, and the ricotta flavor was borderline icy. That said, I inhaled my cup in about five minutes. There was a huge line for this place and the inside is tiny. The staff was not very friendly in terms of helping suggest popular flavors. I got the espresso and salted pistachio - the espresso texture wasn't the best as it tasted a little too airy and not creamy enough. Additionally, the pistachio gave me an allergic reaction meaning there were other nuts in there other than pistachios. It's a small-batch, organic, business; what's there not to love!!! Our server was super helpful and informed us of the fresh options for the day. And he was on point. The flavors were authentic tasting and definitely tasted like a super good gelato not an ice cream. So we picked two recommendations for the day and I have to say I've not had gelato made this well that is unforgettably delicious. I loved it so, I came back 3 times. There are many other flavors on the menu. There are two locations in the city. This one has a 'lab' down the street and is sometimes open to visitors. A Bobby and Giada fav! Artisanal small batch high quality ingredients definitely make Otaleg a must visit. A weekday during my trip was easy, no line and friendly staff provide samples to try. It's a little off the beaten path and it's a very small shop but they definitely exceed with providing excellent unique flavors. Supposedly they are always experimenting with new flavors that change frequently so definitely sample before you make your final selection. Definitely worth the trek. I also didn't know celebrity chefs Bobby Flay and Giada De Laurentiis were fans of Otaleg until after I returned home. The fruit flavors here are so fresh - there is actually bits of fruit peel in the gelato which shows they use real fruit to make the flavors. I tried Watermelon, Peach, and Apricot. All three tasted like biting right into the fruit and were delicious! My favorite was probably the Apricot because it is such a unique flavor to serve! It tasted like a juicy, tart, apricot. So spot on! This was the only gelato spot out of the 5 places I tried that served Apricot and Watermelon. Otaleg had the most expansive selection of fruit flavored gelato by far. The workers are nice, with pop music blasting on the speakers and a deserved line outside the door. This cute little shop located in the old town area of Trastevere is a wonderful place to eat delicious, flavorful gelato. It's a small shop and gets busy quickly. They have quite a good and interesting variety of flavors to choose from. There's something for everyone here, in my opinion. You are allowed to sample two flavors per person. I tried their White Chocolate Olive Oil w/ Orange Zest; Ice Cream with dried fruits, sesame seeds & nuts; Turkish Pistachio, and Cheesecake with red fruit and biscuit flavors. They were all great. The flavors were pronounced and popping in my mouth. My favorites were the Cheesecake and the White Chocolate ones. We had a good experience. The only negatives I would say were the scoop sizes, which were a bit too small, and the limit on the gelato samples you could try. But otherwise, this shop was well worth the visit, and I would go back here in a heartbeat. I loved it. I miss it. Otaleg was really good. I would definitely stop here. I do think, however, that there is a lot of good gelato in Rome, and Otaleg was just one of many good ones. It has obviously benefited from Bobby Flay's featuring of it on his show, and that's the reason we (and many, many other people) stopped in. You can see the line was way out the door. Lots of drunk customers. So much so that the staff thanked some in my party for being courteous. I had pistachio and also a salted peanut and chocolate. Like I said, really good. We came in on a crowded weekend afternoon. It was so crowded, the line was out the door. We tried to use the QR code, which is strategically placed outside so you can make up your mind before you get in the store, but the website wasn't helpful. It wasn't clear what flavors were available and how much everything cost. The line moved quite slowly. The gelato tasted fine. There's no shortage of gelato places in Rome, and I'm not usually one for "hyped up" places that I see on television. However, I saw Otaleg featured on a travel program with Bobby Flay and marked it on my list of places to try when visiting Rome last month - and let me just say, Otaleg is worth every bit of hype. My family and I took the 20 minute walk from our rented flat in Rome just to go to Otaleg and we were not disappointed. The flavors literally explode in your mouth. Lemon and Maracuya gelato in it's purest form. I could eat those 2 flavors alone everyday and be happy. My child had chocolate gelato and she said it was the best she's ever tasted. My husband had raspberry and I forget what other flavor he chose, but even he was happy with the flavors. Our only regret was not ordering the largest size gelato. This place is an absolute must in Rome, it's hidden away in the Trvestere neighborhood which is 20 min by walk from the major attractions such as Panthean. But it is also different from the touristy gelatos they sell near the attractions. We tried the Pistachio Gelato and Plum-Pistachio Sorbet and it registered as one of the best ice creams we have eaten.
