Ever since my son and his mother moved across the street, I've been coming here every now and then for years. Customer service is always spotty. The hot food bar is always decent. I miss their old bakery lol their selection and parking availability is also always very decent. But today I jumped in with my son to grab two quick slices for him and I was disappointed in how they just threw his two slices in a box. No paper, no nothing. We happened to stop here as we were beginning our trip up the PCH for 2 reasons. First, just to check it out because my wife had heard about it and wanted to see what it was like. Secondly, we needed ICE for our cooler so we bought some here and then ran into some usual horrible L.A. Traffic...LOL! This store hates their customers and employees and forces them to work in cruel conditions. It's winter - 53 degrees in Hollywood and I was wearing a huge warm coat and boots, but I was so miserable inside the store I could barely stand to go in and grab one emergency item and come out. When the cashier asked me how I was I told her, noticing she was standing there freezing in ä warm coat huddled next to a floor heater. Then I realized tbis has happened before which was why I stopped going there! The last time I threatened to call OSHA and started but didn't complete the complaint. Tbis time I will - absolutely cruel! What on earth is going on? This store is a true one-stop shop--fresh food, baked goods, and everything you need under one roof. While it's a bit pricier than other grocery stores, the convenience makes up for it. I don't understand how this chain stays in business. They have the worst customer service, the worst prices, and quality that can't compete with top grocery stores. Every successful store has to have something. Trader Joe's has bad produce but they have by far the best costumer service and cheap prices. Lassens is closed Sundays and had bad service but they have all organic produce and some of the best quality products. Whole foods has the best selection, Erewhon has people watching and aesthetic. What does Gelson's have besides great parking? Their prices are 30-50% higher than everywhere else for inferior service and quality. Business model doesn't make any sense. Update: I just went to Bristol Farms to get a prime ribeye and compared to the marbling on the prime ribeye from Gelson's, I can say without a doubt that the steak at gelsons is in no way prime! AND ITS $12 MORE PER POUND AT GELSONS!!! Ever since that Japanese company bought the Gelsons chain, they keep slowly removing high quality products from their shelves and replacing them with lower quality alternatives priced at premium prices. I pretty much have absolutely no reason to come here anymore and I live .2 miles away and have been shopping here for 15 years. It's a shame to see this company go downhill. Also, the price of their steaks is comically absurd. You can get better prime bone-in ribeye at Bristol farms for 38.99/lb. Also, that Melissa's brand is at Safeway for 1/2 the price. I've seen products at Gelsons which are more expensive than the exact same item at Erewhon!!!! Let that sink in!!!! Also, you have to be super careful with the expiration dates here. Gelson's is located in Hollywood up by the Hollywood Hills right on Franklin across from the Celebrity Center, Dianetics. We love coming here and getting fun salads and even prime rib. One of our favorites is this shrimp dill cumberer salad and we also love the salmon with the butter caper sauce. This is definitely a place to go to before dinner party to grab something fun and exciting for your friends to try. They have such a white selection of ready to eat foods pizzas, salads they have a hot plate area with Chinese rice and Mexican food. They even have a chef that can cut prime rib, turkey and tri-tip. They have a great selection of liquors and drinks and most of them are chilled and ready to go. They also have a sushi area towards the back of the store. Connected is a bakery and they have a big selection of cookies and pastries and cakes. We've tried them and they are delicious however, be prepared and bring your wallet! I think our only critique would be the checkout line employees are not that attentive to the customers, which is noticeable when you're paying all that money for a higher grocery store. Nevertheless Gelson's at 5877 Franklin Ave. is a highly recommended place to go and grab something interesting to eat, people watch and maybe get a glimpse of the Hollywood sign! At least twice a week, I walk into this Gelson's then walk out because the lines are too long. How have they not come up with a better system yet?! Instead of just adding an extra checker to each shift, they have the floor manager call employees back to the front, back and forth, back and forth... Surely there's something productive an extra checker could do while at the register when nobody's in line. Thankfully a Lazy Acres just opened up down the street and is better in almost every way imaginable. Their hot and salad bars are well maintained and very appealing, whereas the hot and salad bars at Gelson's feel like an afterthought. And the security guards at Lazy Acres are actually intimidating, unlike the ones at Gelson's that seem to be late for a costume party. No wonder there's so much theft at this Gelson's. Gelson's is not my usual market to shop at just because I don't live near one. The nearest one is probably near Silverlake.  I like these particular snacks, and no other grocery chains carry them. The specific flavor I like is only sold at Gelson's, and sadly, not all Gelson's, so I always have to call ahead before heading out. Elizabeth answered when I called, and she informed me there were two boxes available. I told her I would be there in a couple hours and asked if she could hold it for me. She politely granted my favor and got my name. I went there a little earlier than promised and was able to get the 2 boxes she held for me and walk out of the store in 5 minutes or less. Smooth transaction with the help of a professional employee. I wish to be back when they restock on my favorite snacks. read more

Stopped in to beat the heat for some hydrating beverages and tasty frozen treats.. Didn't realize Gelson's had such a good mix & match deal on their wine and very comparable prices to that of Total Wine, BevMo, Mission Wine & Spirits and other specialty beverage shops. Got a nice bottle of white wine on sale, some necessities as well and food plenty of frozen goodness including non-dairy and gluten free options at close to reasonable prices.... Sometime Gelson's as a whole is one of the more expensive grocery chains, but sometimes it surprises you. We got great customer service while on the floor and at checkout from Tim, I believe. The food and salad bars were plentiful and everything was well stocked. Always clutter free throughout the entire store. I have a few friends in the East Hollywood/EaHo area near Franklin Ave and Bronson where Gelson's reside who frequent this spot and recently got some desserts for a get together from their bakery Viktor Benes, just left of the west entrance. I didn't know they had such amazing vegan goodies as well, but now I do! Definitely hold this location highly above others in Los Angeles and other grocers in the local area. Usually even during peak hours is easy in and out from the parking lot to the entrance and back out again to the exit. Today I went to the store and almost had a shopping cart shoved into my face by the undercover theft prevention person. I understand that prevention could be needed but what does it have to do with me? I just got off work, I'm in Scrubs and I'm by the deli that's happens to be near the exit. that doesn't mean I'm going to steal anything. The people who work here could use some serious sensitivity training. I rolled up at 9:30 PM on a Monday to buy groceries. Found some $11 filet mignon which was a highlight. There were only two check out lanes open so it took forever which is actually kind of unusual. Everything was going smoothly until the cash register I was checking out at froze after my Apple Pay had been scanned and it seemed as though I was done. I started walking away thinking the transaction was complete, but since it wasn't: the two people serving me (nice register guy and an awful bag lady) started screaming "SIR SIR"... I was wearing a dress and Gucci platforms. Wtf Gelsons. I'm not a stickler for pronouns but this experience was pretty weak. Will continue shopping here because it's the only grocery in the neighborhood but jeez. If I see this bag lady again I will definitely give her the stink eye. I even greeted her by name when she walked up and she ignored me. Trash. Outside Gelsons you find a large pinboard for the specialties of the day: fresh cut salami only $4.99 /lbs I have no issues with that and I did not ask to use it, I just asked if I could place a letter size paper with the details of my missing dog on the parking somewhere and I wanted to ask for permission and where the best place would be. When I moved to Hollywood many years ago, I remember the wide-eyed me making his first trip to the Franklin Hills neighborhood Gelsons. The glamour! The grandeur! The bakery and deli sections seemed so intimate and personal. The high prices seemed to match the area's tony real estate market. Every customer looked like "somebody" and seemed to be on a first-name basis with his or her cashier. I was totally in awe. Years later, I still am. When I find myself back on Franklin, the Hollywood Gelsons does not disappoint. Remember that this is a smaller market, about 1/3 the size of a regular grocery store, and much smaller than even the Century City Gelson's. You are getting a 'curated' version of what you might need! Not all ten sizes of dog food and not all brands. But I generally find exactly what I want. The Viktor Benês Bakery inside (always my first stop) has some incredible baked goods, and they do an awesome cookie tray which is the perfect hostess/host gift, as you cannot arrive to the party empty-handed. Check out the cookie trays! They will forget the bottle of wine you bring, but they will remember the cookie tray. Over to the deli section. How many times have you ordered a half-pound of cracked pepper turkey and 12 slices of baby swiss, only to get home and find that everything had clumped together? That does not happen here. Deli clerks lovingly insert wax paper between the slices so everything stays fresh. I guess they will do that for you at other markets, but I've never seen it, and here you don't have to ask. Lots of other fresh seafood, meats and pastas available. The rest of the market is so neat and clean. There's always one or two people in produce keeping things looking nice. Two big refrigerated cases of Wolfgang Puck salads and stuff, which I don't mind splurging on sometimes because (I justify to myself), it's still tons cheaper than eating out. And the shoppers there? As cool as ever. Watch as the customer in front of you tosses six bottles of Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label into his basket, and you'll know what I mean. I want to be that guy. My family shops here 2-3 times per month. Good store. We like the variety of goods and management is responsive when needed. The new bar area is a nice addition. But what was gross yesterday was a woman walking her dog through the store. Animals in food establishments are disgusting to me and pose food safety hazards and disrespects people's allergies to dog dander. Only service animals are allowed. Emotional support dogs are not. When somebody enters the store with a dog, please have staff ask only two specific questions allowed by law: (1) is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? and (2) what work or task has the dog been trained to perform. It is a misdemeanor in California for any person who knowingly and fraudulently represents himself or herself, through verbal or written notice, to be the owner or trainer of any canine licensed as, to be qualified as, or identified as, a guide, signal, or service dog. read more

What is wrong with my favorite Gelson's??? I have been shopping at Gelson's in Century City, West Hollywood, Newport beach, Silver Lake/Los Feliz, La Cañada Flintridge and Hollywood... since 1990. Now, I moved back in Hollywood, so Hollywood location is my Gelson's. But... today, cashier Evaline and baggers (Nadar & other guy, are they students??? They were talking to each other, and they weren't working) are awful!!! I bought expensive fillet mignon (my favorite)... and the stupid bagger (Nadar or other guy) was going to put the heavy tangerines bag onto my meats :( If I didn't say anything to them, they were ruining my meats!!! My other groceries are damaged (dry foods with wet foods together) too. In the past, I reported about baggers many times at Silver Lake location... now this location is bad too... Please educate cashiers & baggers like "treat products carefully and be nice with customers". One good thing is that I got $5 coupon and another $5 from my points (total $10) discount on my grocery. A great supermarket to get your daily groceries and household items. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the store has most to everything you may need. One thing that is definitely driving this place down is the insane prices. I get it- the quality of some items really make up for this, but literally everything in this store costs an arm and a leg to buy.
