Great selection of frames. But what really impresses me is their service. I brought in a pair of frames that had broken and I was treated very fairly. Their staff worked with me so I could have an exact replacement. The very first time I came in, the staff advised me on what kind of frames were best for a progressive bifocal lens, and the glasses I received were so much better for reading than any of my previous pairs. I cannot stress how amazing their customer service is. I went in with specific requests. When I picked up, it did not work for me (trifocals). I explained my requests and need to save money. I was ready to have to repay the cost for my mistake. They disagreed. They said they felt my options were not adequately explained to their satisfaction. As a result, they said the would replace the lenses for free! YES. I cannot believe it. The circumstances were unique, but it came down to customer service. I will never go anywhere else. Shurons are the ultimate classic frames. Affordable, timeless, and made in the USA. Same frame designs since 1865 too. And they sell them at Gene Rogers!! Forget eBay and thrift stores, come here for your vintage specs fix. My husband was getting tired of my old clear Moscot Nebbs frames covering half of my face, so we compromised and I picked out a smaller version of same style in demi gray, the Shuron Freeway. Gene and his wife were a pleasure to work with. The only disappointment I had was that he did not process vision insurance (that is the minus 1 star), and I later found out that none of my glasses purchase was covered- ouch! Oh well. Anyway, I am happy with my experience there. Also, I am an avid Yelp reader and don't know how I managed to overlook the 15% discount ad at the top of this page. I called Gene to inquire if I could use the discount even though I had already paid for the glasses, and he made an exception and applied it. Now that is great customer service! Note: You can get Shurons for ~$40 cheaper online, however, I think it is worth it to get the frames here, as you will need the correct sizing. Support your local businesses! read more

I popped in over my lunch break today to drop off a pair of bent Ray-Ban sunglasses that I assumed were beyond repair. I expected a wait of 1-2 weeks. Instead, the staff took my sunglasses and immediately went to work. I was so impressed by this simple repair that I requested new lens replacements, which they also did while I waited. I was out of there in 15 minutes, and the total cost was about 1/3 of what a replacement pair of sunglasses would cost. Looking forward to visiting again soon. read more

Worse than glasses that aren't quite right? Paying for them. This store doesn't try to wear customers down with volume but pulls customers in with interesting styles. They also carry styles in multiple colors. I don't want to have to imagine myself in slightly different frames. The lenses I got are so clear that it's weird. I'll get used to it. I've been wearing glasses and contacts all my life; going to Gene Rogers was hands-down the best eyeglasses experience I've had. They have a really neat selection of frames, as others have noted. There are a lot of neat vintage frames, but they also had a good selection of contemporary frames at a variety of price points. I think they do a really good job selecting which frames to carry. Both Gene and his wife Donna seem very knowledgeable, honest, and helpful. Donna was very helpful when I was selecting frames - she knows how to select flattering shapes and colors for one's face, and will give her honest input if asked. The other gentleman working there, whose name I can't recall right now, was also very helpful. The glasses I ended up with were fairly priced and the work on the lenses appears to be of much better quality than glasses I have gotten from chain stores or online, and they were ready in about a week. They use a different process on the anti-glare stuff than most places - it seems like it will last a lot longer. I will be a regular customer for certain. read more

This is one of those businesses that makes Austin great. The selection of vintage frames--the real deal here, folks, not Ray-Bans--is outstanding, but so is the selection overall. After having been to a couple other eyeglass retail shops I was becoming ever so frustrated with shitty service and terrible eye-wear selection. As always I took to the yelp website to help me find the perfect place, although skeptical at first with its impeccable 5 star rating, I decided to hit Mr. Gene up and Im pretty happy I did!! Small shop, with a great selection of vintage frames and one very helpful owner. I must have tried on every frame in the store, and had trouble not taking them all, but I finally settled on one frame. The price was reasonable, but I have really terrible vision that usually requires expensive lenses, so that was the bulk of my price. I will definitely come back here next time I need a new pair, and even though I kinda regret letting people in on this gold mine, you should too! read more

This family-owned place is great. Lots of different frames, from classic to trendy...and the prices are decent. Mrs. Rogers was very helpful and nice while assisting me in selecting a pair of frames. These people are awesome. I dealt with Mr. and Mrs. Rogers and and they were both fantastic. The backstory - I'm was getting sick of contacts but didn't want laser surgery. I had worn glasses for years though and believe or not, I was interested in finding a nice pair of glasses so I could move away from contacts. Enter Gene Rogers Optical. Being kind of clueless on fashion and thus on eyeglass wear, Ms. Rogers helped me find the perfect pair. Then I whipped out my Yelp coupon and she seemed excited with me that I would be getting a discount. The day of arrival. Wow, what a great, family owned, intimate company. I just bought frames and lenses from them today and would recommend them to anyone looking for the same. When you go, you'll be greeted my Gene himself, and probably even his wife, Debra. They personally took me and my sister around the whole store and held our hands as I tried on around 30 pairs, while helping us critique each one and how they fit my face. They have a great, hand picked selection of frames that include both vintage and modern models, and their prices seemed fair compared to what I've seen elsewhere. I have been searching and searching for a pair (or two) of vintage glasses. I live in the DFW area and could not find anything! So I searched online and found Gene Rogers optical and decided to take a road trip to visit his store. To make a long story short, I walked in, looked to my left and found at least 50 pair of the type of glasses I was looking for -- vintage 50s cat eye. I was like a kid in a candy store! It took me less than 30 minutes to try on a few pair, talk to Gene and his wife and purchase my glasses. What a wonderful couple! I have never met nicer people! My mom went with me and you would have thought the three of them were best friends by the time we left. I am so happy I made the trip from Dallas because meeting them was the best part of my weekend. I love my glasses and get compliments daily. I also found that the two pair of glasses I bought from him were relatively inexpensive and he could fill my prescription for me. What a wonderful job! I love this place! I have purchased several glasses from Gene's Optical! It was time for a new pair of glasses so I had stopped by several times trying to decide on a frame that I thought I wanted. I found one but they didn't have the color. They said that they could order the frame with no obligation to buy it. Well it came in and the color didn't work. I was really devastated because I had my heart set on this frame. So I looked at all the frames again with the help of Gene's son or his grandson(sorry I can't remember the name). Well I thought I knew what I wanted but they picked out two pair that I'm sure I had already,looked at and didn't choose. They even asked two girls that were in the back to take a look. As if this place needed another positive review. Seriously though I was amazed with the huge selection of original frames and awesome prices. I got an awesome pair of nylon frames made by a company that hasn't changed the design of their frames since the 60's. They only cost me $85 which made it an easy decision to upgrade to the pricier lenses. Also no sales tax makes it easy to do the math on your final cost. As a lifetime spectacle wearer it is refreshing to know that Gene Rogers is here to kick ass. read more

On vacation. Nose pads from my wire rim glasses fell off. Visited 2 big optical shops this am. Was informed my glasses were special and nose pads needed to be special order. Looked on Yelp and this shop came up. " Gene Rogers" On arrival I was greeted by friendly staff. My glasses were treated very special. I'm happy to add yet another 5-star rating for Gene Rogers Optical! I first visited this shop to get updated Rx optical lenses. The customer service was excellent, the lenses arrived quickly, and the pricing was very fair. In fact, after I received the new lenses I noticed some crazing in the lens (an error attributable to the lens manufacturer, not Gene Rogers Optical) -- I brought the glasses back and they fixed me up with replacement lenses right away, at no cost to me. Since then I've brought in pairs of Rx and sunglasses for fit adjustments. The talented folks have a knack for frame adjustments and getting the fit just right. If you're looking for a new Rx frame, check out Gene Rogers. If you are weary of mass-market retailers that carry all the same overpriced brands, Gene Rogers Optical is the opposite! I stepped on my glasses last year and really mangled them. I figured they were a lost cause, so I put them in a bag and put them in my closet. I ran across them last week and decided to try to repair them. After reading all the glowing reviews of Gene Rogers Optical, I took the glasses to them. Kyle said that he could repair them at no charge to me. A couple of days later, I picked them up. They looked brand new. I know that they spent quite some time repairing them, but Kyle insisted on no charge. They now have a customer for life. read more
