First time coming to a General Discount store. I'm used to shopping at 99 cent stores. They closed down this year. So I'm still looking for a good alternative. This is definitely not it. Came here to get some turkey basters, some stationary products like paper, pens, pencils, markers, and any other cheap stuff I don't need. That's exactly how I shopped at 99 Cent store. Most of the cheap stuff here is doubled the price that would've been priced at 99 Cent store. So this is not a good 99 Cent store alternative. Example: Turkey basters were "on sale" for 99 cent (they were sold out). But they were sold out. Reynold's aluminum foil was "on sale" with required coupon found in paper (they didn't have any papers in store), for 99 cent. Luckily I had my paper that was in my junk mail. As the regular price is over $3. They must be crazy. This is a discount store. I expect discount prices. Otherwise I can go to Vons or Ralph's and pay some change more for the same brand. Their selection for cheap stuff under $2.00 is slim. Most of the 99 cent stuff is "on sale" for a certain amount of time. Most of the good sales that are shown in the paper are out of stock. I barely found stuff that was useful for my needs. Because they have such a small selection of stuff in comparison to 99 Cent stores. Aisles in store are narrow as ever. You will have to turn your body sideways so others can squeeze pass you and your cart. I'm slim and still had this issue. Parking lot is shared with tons of businesses in shopping area. But there is plentiful available parking, especially on a Saturday morning at 10am (store opening hours) when I went. But the parking spaces are small af. You will get door dings or give door dings from getting out vehicle. I noticed a lot of people taking up two spaces. I guess so they won't get or receive door dings. Lastly, I read some bad reviews about a store Latino male security guard who watches everyone like a hawk and will confront you if your purse is a backpack or a designer bag and demand that you leave it up front in a cart. Well, I didn't encounter him. There was a black male security guard working Today. I didn't have any issues out of him. There is also LPAs who follow folks around the store. I'm guessing that this store experiences a lot of shoplifting. Because LPAs (loss prevention agents) were deep in here and watching everyone like a hawk. The cashier was friendly. But there was only 1 cashier opened. So lines were long. Bottom-lime, I won't return. Next time I'm in area, I'll try out Dollar Tree, located in shopping center across the street read more

I mentioned to my hubby I needed to go to a budget friendly store. As this is the season we gather specific items for stocking stuffers and or gifts for a certain facility in dementia care. I attend a Dementia Support Group on the 2nd Thursday of each month in Whittier. This year I managed and was lucky to find scraps, mittens, throw blankets, socks for our seniors.. I was litterally shocked at the price and the quality the beanies and scrarfs were made of that I went and asked if they had more. Warning!! If you come to the store at 7:48pm!!! They are telling patrons they are closed!!!! The hours of operations says; close at 8pm!!! Don't waste people time with false information!!! The heavy set security was very rude . I was in mid question and he went ahead to not answer my question and shut the door in my face. Basically nudged me to back me out the door with his body!!! Very rude then the staff/ cashier appeared to be asking About what happened . The initial problem is that they shut the doors down 15+ min early saying the store needed to be cleared.. Dang, by looking at all the comments about the security guard, I am SHOCKED that my one time shopping trip there was uneventful. (I am from Compton and am completely accustomed to being treated like a criminal every store I walk into due to my face tattoos and general "appearance"). I tried to stop by today to get some slides/shoes, as I remembered they have a pretty good selection of clothes, shoes, everything you expect from your local hood supply store, but I was too late. DO NOT EVER COME HERE!! I came here to grab a couple of household items. This was my first time EVER coming here. Two men tried to walk out of the store with reflective vests on with a bag full of stolen body wash. The security guard snatched the bag and flung it so hard that he lost his balance almost falling into the stroller holding my newborn grandson! I yelled at him to watch it but he was so focused on arguing with the thieves, he didn't take a second to ensure the safety of me, my daughter, or my grandson! When they threatened to "beat his ass!" He said, It's whatever, still failing to consider the our safety. We literally walked in and walked out. As we were leaving, he apologized but the damage was already done. This place deserves -5 reviews. The employees are rude and disrespectful. They are extremely lack luster, treating the job of customer service as a chore. Customer service doesn't mean succumbing to an ill-mannered client, it means having the manners and being courteous enough to sympathize with the customer to try to understand the who, the what, the why. Coming to a resolution best suited for the business and the client. Harassing customers about made up policies is an unlawful way to run an establishment. The security guard is unpleasant, unreasonable, unprofessional, impolite, and arrogantly incorrect. The security guard is the face of the store, which an accurate representation of the whole store; rude, untrained employees. Someone may assume since they are the first person you see when walking in the store they will be friendly but that assumption would be painfully wrong. General Discount treats their customers as thieves, each person having to check their belongings at the front as if they are being taken into booking at the county jail. Be careful when using your debit card at the store because they add on a surcharge to your purchase. Adding surcharges to debit card transactions is illegal. The manager is completely rude, as I was speaking to them they walked away. The place needs to be renamed general tomfoolery because that's what you'll experience as soon as you step foot into the front door, a bunch of clowns that were given too much authority. read more

Just horrible. I came in with my 1 year old baby. Security asked is this my first time shopping here. & no it's not I been in here plenty of times. He asked because I had my BABY diaper bag. He proceeds to tell me all bags must be put at the front. It's a diaper bag like be serious I'm not leaving my diaper bag that's absurd and unheard of. This is a horrible experience I had at this store on Wednesday, August 7,2024. I entered the store carrying my shopping bag, like I've done before, and a fat male Hispanic was standing on the platform and told me I was not allowed to bring my shopping bag into the store. I told him I needed my bag to carry my purchases, then he yelled at me and said, " I don't care you have to leave it here." I left my shopping bag in the shopping basket that was on the platform. After I made my purchases, I came over to the platform and asked him where my shopping bag was. He responded, "You left the shopping bag on the floor, which was a lie because I had left my shopping bag in the basket. Then he went over to the trash can and pulled out my shopping bag from the trash can and said, " Here shove it up your mouth." I immediately left the store, and he followed me outside and threw my shopping bag on the sidewalk. This type of behavior from this employee is unacceptable. We are longtime customers, but we will never shop here again. I see by the reviews on Yelp that a lot of customers have complained about the same individual on how rude he is with customers. This type of behavior will cause your store to lose customers, and without customers, you will go out of business. read more

Security is always there .. never a problem ..I always walk in with the same bag..and today I was asked to leave my bag in a basket up from with a Latino Security in such a rude tone! This store is like Big Lots but much nicer. This one is located on Imperial and Crenshaw in the DD's Discount shopping center. The parking lot is huge so plenty of parking. The store has a security guard and the employees are nice. Most of all the store is super clean and well stocked. You name it they have it and really good prices. I dont know why its taken me so long to try them out, it used to be Treasure Hunt i thought they were still on that level, i will definately be back. read more

The service my husband received tonight was not good. We went to buy a TV, we went to the section and the three employees that was in that area did not acknowledge us, my husband after finding what he wants went to the counter and still he was ignored. The three employees we having a very vivid conversation in Spanish and did not hear when he said excuse me to the one behind the counter. Long story short I got upset and told my husband to let leave, before leaving we asked the security for the manager, instead of helping us he check the camera and then call the employees we went back and the girl that was wearing a red shirt said something in Spanish to the other two. Then the security guard came over and a series of arguments happens, one being my husband got mad because all three employees lied and said he said nothing to them, they were so busy with their conversation that they did not hear him. I will not spend my money here, my family will not spend money here. The staff needs more training in customer service. They have no respect for us blacks who spend their money in there. This discount store is on a larger scale higher then .99, and dollars tree stores, this store is pretty large inside with ton on free parking, the first thing you see is security sitting up in one of those console like you see in some of the casinos watching over people and a uncle I used to ask him how much did that cost he would say 5 fingers and a quick get a way, it was not crowded pretty clean store, here is a small list of some of the name brand Items they sell here, oster, Lysol, soft soap, tide, air wick, colgate, Irish spring, dove, Clorox, Kingston, reynolds wrap, always, palmotive, pro club, and Samsung TVs, along with other house hold appliances, plus they sell school uniforms too, there is only 4 locations, Inglewood, Los Angeles, Compton, and Pacoima, I had excellent customer service. read more

General Discount is a regional version of Big Lots with more options as far as products are concerned and a LOT cheaper and better selection. Most products sold here are generic brand but there are some name brand products available (Example LG Bluetooth headphones, Car freshener, Febreze). Less crowded and easier to get out than the 99 Cent store. Store is always clean and well stocked. FYI there is security watching the monitors every minute, every hour for those who are trying to do some fishy stuff. Located in the Crenshaw Imperial Plaza, there is plenty of parking available and fairly easy to get out, especially during rush hour. Customer service for a store of its nature is impeccable. I must say this is quickly becoming one of my favorite places to shop. Everything you need is all under one roof. Among the best options available for those looking to save a few dollars. read more

This is my first review just beacuse I really wanted to give kudos to this store. I shop here all the time but today's experience showed their great customer service. After experiencing awful customer service at the 99 cent store down the way. I came in and wanted to know if I can buy a lot of particular items ( I was shopping for a school supply giveaway). The guy actually went to look and see if they had it in stock (which didn't happen at the other store) and they had the manager order some more just for me. 400 items worth of merchandise (which the other store did not do). They were awesome and made my bad experience at the 99 cent store all but go away (well I had to send corporate a harsh email) but I am glad I got to experience their excellent customer service. read more

Walking in the store, I was told i had to leave my backpack (Gucci) with security. I tell the security guard, i paid to much to be leaving my backpack with him. He then tells me he knows real Gucci and mine is fake. I guess he assumed because I'm coming into a discount store. But nevertheless, he tells me to leave it or leave the store. If you saw this guard you would have left too. Why is my backpack different from a woman walking in your store with a purse? OMG! I couldn't believe it but two years and some months ago I brought an RCA 32inch flat screen HD television there for $169.00 and it stil lworks great. I've bought jewelry, snacks and just recently found the crystals that I use for face and ear jewelry. I love this place. My son and I were buying top notch designer body oils for awhile. Got such compliments. They have since been replaced with ones i don;t like. There suede hangers are lovely and you get alot for a little money. After we move I will be coming back to get more tvs and I hope they never discontinue my face, ear and body crystals because you can hardly find them anywhere else. read more

Seriously this place is a hidden treasure. Imagine if you will, bed bath and beyond, best buy (tv only) Michaels, Staples, all rolled into one. Do u need a carrying case for your laptop? They got it $20 bucks, yeah i know right, i'll take two.. They have big ass picture frames, dishes, detergent, Televisions, like top brand LG tv's for sale.. They have school supplies, and basically anything you can ever need for your home for much less than those other retailers. I think this is one of those stores that take other stores excess product and sell it for a bargain. But its good for us as the consumer.. Take for example the frame my mother bought. It measured about 22x34. We had just gone to Michaels and they quoted us 200 bucks for a frame to be built to suit because they dont carry 22x34 inch frames. So we went here at one for $30 dollars.
