My husband, my son, and myself went last night for dinner! We ordered the grouper throats, fried crab claws, and the kids grouper fish basket. I live locally, have eaten a lot of grouper, and this was truly the best grouper we've ever had. Fried to perfection! You can also sample oysters for $1 to see if you like the selection they have. If you are looking for fancy table service this is not the restaurant for you. This place is very small and cramped with counter seating or takeout service. The building is old and it shows (although the exterior has been refurbished and looks great) and it has a bit of a small town truck stop diner feel to the interior. If you appreciate the authenticity of an old mom-and-pop owned local eatery without the bells and whistles of an expensive touristy place this is worth trying. The food here is excellent! The menu is full of local favorites such as locally caught fish, shrimp, and oysters. The shrimp and grits is fantastic and the oysters are without a doubt the freshest and tastiest I have ever had. The wait staff and cooks seem to be very experienced and make sure you get what you pay for. I have been coming to Panama City Beach my whole life. I never knew this place existed in the city until recently. It is a true hidden gem. I ate the best oysters I have eaten on the beach. They are also several dollars less expensive. The fried yellow grouper was the best fish I have eaten at the beach. The shrimp were also delicious. I can't say enough about the excellent service. He shucked our oysters, talked to us and recommended other great local places to eat. One place he recommmed was Billy's Oyster Bar, which is one of our favorites for about 30 years. Gene's is off the beaten path and worth the short drive into the Millville community in Panama City. It is a "hole in the wall" and only has counter service with limited seating and outdoor seating. Surprisingly, they are most busy during the winter months. Give them a try for a simple and delicious meal. You won't be disappointed! read more
