We have been going to Genie for a few years now. It is in a great location and it is a nice, clean facility. Genie does a great job and is good with our son. Genie has had some struggles due to the pandemic but we are so glad she made it through and continues to serve our community. I took my son to Genie for his first haircut and have been back twice more in the following months. This is a great place for kids' haircuts -- both the women working there are fantastic with kids and do a great job distracting him with toys, pinwheels, funny faces, etc. while his hair gets snipped. Plus it's only $15, which I understand is a steal compared to Cartoon Cuts or similar. Can't speak to adult haircuts but for kids it's great! read more

I took my 16-month-old son for a haircut here. We went on a weekday and there was no wait. My son is shy around strangers and Genie took her time letting my son get warmed up to her. She gave him several toys to play with and turned on some cartoons for him to watch. During previous attempts at haircuts, my son has had a hard time sitting still, but Genie was able to get him still for the 15 minutes or so it took to do his hair. I clearly asked for his cut to be shorter on the sides and longer on top and she did a great job giving me what I asked for. The cut was also only $15. I have to say that I was not super impressed. It is a nice small salon, but there are a few things which will prevent me from returning to this place. I took my two year old there. He is very fussy about haircuts. We went in with long curly locks, wanted to just bring his hair in an orderly shape, and came home with almost a crew cut!! I tried telling her many times, but she just wouldn't listen. She gave me the 'I know' response. It's only hair and it will grow back, but I am absolutely not comfortable when the stylist doesn't understand you. I felt that she just did what she wanted to without much regard to my taste of the hairstyle for my son. I also felt a language barrier. Another thing that bothered me is that she wanted me to sit in a chair full of hair. After she got done with her customer, I stood there waiting for her to clean the chair, but she kept telling me to sit on it. I had to request her to get rid of the hair, which was a futile request. Also, she did not bother to get hair off my son or me(he was sitting in my lap) after she finished chopping his hair. I am NOT going back to this place!! read more

I took my two-year-old son here upon recommendations from several people in the area who said Genie Hair is a good place for kids. They were right! Genie was a natural with my son, and she gave him a really cute haircut. She is very prepared for children--she has childrens' books and toys in the shop to keep them occupied. Genie was extremely nice and handled my son very well. She was making him laugh and occupying him so he would sit still long enough for the haircut--and he is usually very active! Genie is great with kids and the salon is child-friendly. There's a big screen t.v. with cartoons, toys, and books to keep children from freaking out during a haircut. This is the second time we've had a disastrous experience at this place - I waited four years since the last bad haircut and since we live close it seemed like it was time to give it a chance again. I recently moved back to downtown Silver Spring! This time I am living on my own and needed a cheap and great place to get my hair done! My family used to live here back from 1990-2002 back by University Blvd and Langley Dr (specifically on Newhall St back when Eastern Middle School used to be two blocks back down from where it is now and right at the intersection of University, E Wayne Ave and Kimes). My family moved to Ashton by Olney after they split the system to the NCC. Anyway, like I said I DESPERATELY NEEDED GENIE'S! I had been to two Hair Cuttery's in the past 4 years to try and get LONG LAYERS! You know where they just chop the splits and then just shorten it about a couple inches so it appears to be all the same length but is still all layered and playful, though not a total 5+ inch cut off chops and overly short bang job!?! Well, the first time I went to the one in Rockville after a couple classes at MC for this they did the chop job and it looked like some one literally took a weed wacker to it to get the bangs and length for the layers done, but some how they left a decent bit of length of about 5 feet! I was mortified and I just about refused to pay! I talked them down and they were like fine just pay 8 for the shampoo/blow dry and don't pay the additional 8 for the hack job! I was like THANK YOU! because I could NOT waste that $8 as a college kid on something so ugly I would not even sell it to a blind bald girl as a toupee! I had tried to grow it all back out for two years maybe two and a half and then when I thought it looked like it was all the same length I stupidly decided maybe the Hair Cuttery in Olney could do better! They of COURSE gave me the I KNOW, I KNOWS! Then gave me yet another hack job and claimed the ONLY way to do layers was to make them short and choppy! I WAS LIKE, "THAT'S IT! WHERE'S MY LIGHTER WHEN I NEED IT!?!" I mean seriously I was so furious as I knew the only way to get it back to being all the same length again was through a year and a half of growing it out and causing severe damage to roots and ends as the length was so bad that I would have to make it far beyond healthy growth! I just felt like torching the place for being the 2nd place in 5 years to torch my beautiful hair! Then I found her and she was like they're a chain and each girl only has 6 months-a year of training and knows nothing and yet should know how to do what you wanted, but they would just say they did and just cut it how they're trained to do anyway! She totally understood what I had been through and cut off just enough to save me from the damage about 4 inches and then 3.5-4 depending on the area for the layers! SHE SAVED MY HAIR AND I AM SO GLAD I FOUND HER! THANK YOU GENIE! YOU ARE A GENIUS! read more

I was a little worried about taking my 19 month old daughter for her first haircut given her extreme dislike for hair washing/brushing. I had put it off for as long as possible, but her little baby fro was becoming unmanageable and I had to bite the bullet. After seeing all the bad reviews about Cartoon Cuts and learning that they don't even offer appointments on weekends (the only time I could make it, as a working mom) I happened across several glowing reviews for Genie's. I have to say, this salon exceeded my expectations. The shop was simple and bright. There were other kids getting their hair cut when I arrived (good sign), but my daughter was happy to wait her turn while playing with the available toys. The stylist was very gentle and sweet, and even had a special cartoon apron for my daughter to wear. She was quick, skilled, and reasonably priced. And most importantly, she kept my daughter calm throughout the entire ordeal (quite a feat). I would definitely recommend this shop to anyone looking for a gimmick-free, kid-friendly hair salon. read more
