Completely took advantage of me because I had never gotten anything tailored before. I went in to get a bridesmaid dress hemmed. He wouldn't give me a price estimate because "how would he know how much it would cost until he got started." It took him 4 weeks and cost me $250. The dress was chiffon, had 2 layers and did have a slit, but $250 for 2 inches off the bottom is ridiculous considering it also took 4 weeks. Billa is awesome!! When you walk in his little shop you'll know that he's an experienced tailor. I went to get my shirt tailored and he over did my sleeves but thats my own fault because I asked him to make the sleeves shorter and he jst followed my instruction. When I got the shirts I kinda can wear them so I left. A week later I decided not to compromise and took the 3 shirts back and ask him to elongate the sleeves. I thought hes gonna charge me a little fee but he say he'll do it completely FREE. I can't wait to wear those shirts because once the sleeves are fixed, they are quite perfect and that proves Billa really knows what he's doing. One of the zippers on my winter jacket fell off. I brought my jacket to this guy for him to take a look. He told me that the whole zipper needed to be replaced because the teeth were worn out. He was able to get it done in only two business days (I brought it on a Saturday afternoon and it was ready on Tuesday afternoon). His work was excellent (he replaced the old zipper with a matching new one and it's impossible to see that the zipper was replaced) and he was so excited to show me the new zipper when I came to pick up the jacket. He's a sweet old guy who does excellent work. This place feels like a very "old school" NYC place. You need to go down steps and knock on a door that looks like it's at least 50 years old. Sometimes there will be a few guys hanging out in this guy's shop. The only reason why I didn't give him 5 stars was because he charged me $40 for the zipper replacement. I didn't shop around for prices so I don't know if it's reasonable or not but it feels kind of expensive. read more

I went to have a pair of jeans hemmed, and the guy is sitting on the stoop eating chicken and tells me to just leave the jeans there on the stoop and I can come pick them up later in the week. I figured, no big deal, kind of a New York moment. I come back to pick them up a week later, well within business hours, but nobody's home. I call several times until finally about an hour later, someone picks up m. I walk over to get the jeans, and it's cash only, no big deal, I had cash, but it's $25 just to him a pair of jeans hemmed. I was looking for a tailor closer to my apartment than my usual (Dejavu Tailoring on 57th) for a quick zipper fix. So I called Genius. HORRIBLE customer service. I called to ask the price to replace a broken zipper on a pair of jeans and was rudely told "I have no idea, bring it in and I will tell you!!" In response I asked for a ballpark price, as I did not want to show up and be given an obscene rate (there are plenty of tailors in this area, so I would choose to go elsewhere if that were the case). The man snapped at my question "JUST BRING THEM IN!!" And then hung up on me. Safe to say I will not be visiting this tailor regardless of the price. I will instead return to Dejavu or visit one of the many other tailors nearby who are actually friendly to their customers. read more

He's slim fitted my suits that were clearly out of date and made them stylish, saving me tons from buying new suits. I decided to try this place out hoping that I would find a decent tailor. The owner/tailor seemed like he knew what he was doing when I went in. I knew that when he told me one shoulder was higher than the other which most tailors don't recognize. He also told me that my shoulders were smaller than the jacket and that he had to take the shoulders in before he could adjust the sleeves. He told me he would make it perfect and I responded "I hope so." He then said in a very determined voice "No! Not hope. I make it genius! It will be perfect!" I believed him. When I showed up a week later for my fitting, I knew it was NOT going to be perfect because he was working on my jacket when I walked in. Anyway, after the fitting and a week later, the pants were perfect, but the jacket itself was not even close to perfect. Again, I could tell something was wrong when he put my suit straight into a garment bag and did not let me try on the jacket, let alone even show me. I wanted to wear the suit at least a few times before making any judgments and the shoulder he worked on the most shows flaws. The stitching is not clean and the shoulder is not smooth. Two stars for the sleeves and pants, but the one shoulder is not "genius." read more

I've lived in Genius' neighborhood for 12 years and passed his tiny shop dozens of times but thought "Ha, genius. Boy this guy thinks a lot of himself". And stupidly, never took him up on it. Well, I had this dress I loved and only wore once for a wedding and now wanted to wear it again for another wedding. But, as often happens, I gained a few pounds since I last wore it and brought it to Genius to see what he could do (especially after reading all the rave reviews). I was NOT disappointed. I loved them and could never part with them, but huge shoulder pads have been out of style for a long time, so these dresses were just hanging in the closet.... Genius Tailor took on the job of restoring my leather jacket after I was turned down by four tailors in New York and one in Paris! Everyone else said it couldn't be done, but Bilal not only saved the jacket but brought it to a new level with a brand new collar that is a perfect match (though more supple than the original, which is great.) This jacket is dear to me and my kids, who have very positive associations with it from my returns from long work trips.... It's been part of my homecoming, in a sensory way, since they were babies. Bilal did an absolutely amazing job at a very, very reasonable price, in one day less than he said he would need. The whole experience was a treat. For my kids, it was an antidote to the disposability and lack of pride in work that seems rampant these days.
