I dropped off a red Gucci jacket because the red zipper was broken and needed replacement. They said they would check to see if they had a red zipper, but if not they would source one for me. When I went to pick it up, they had replaced it with a metallic zipper. They should have asked me if I wanted this before putting it on, I would have said no and brought it to someone that could take the time to find a red one. These guys are horrible in quality of tailoring, professionalism of their shop, and their intensely confrontational attitude. The cash only payments should have tipped me off. They RUINED an expensive skirt with a cheap looking raw cut hem that is visibly uneven. I called them and asked them why they didn't tell me of the outcome BEFORE they did the work so I would not waste their time. Immediate response: NO refund policy. The son proceeded to tell me all about how his father was sick (while I am sorry he is not well, that's not germaine to the discussion), that he didn't have time for a paying customer, and then he hung up on me. TWICE. This is such a basic skill for any tailor. How do you mess up a simple hem so royally? AVOID if you want to keep your clothes in good shape. To the owner: please keep the money. If I could give negative stars, I would. These guys are absolutely horrible. I should have been tipped off by the 10 seconds they spent with me pinning up the dress when I took it in last week (without any discussion) or by the cash only policy (or option to venmo to a personal venmo account). I went in to pick the dress up today which I need to wear in a wedding this weekend and they didn't have me try it on while I was there (should have been another red flag). I tried it on when I got home and the top now pulls all across the front, so I called them and went back in. I put it on in the shop and showed him what I was talking about - as well as a picture from before the alterations to show that it wasn't always that way - and he told me it was too bad, there was nothing he could do, and I should have noticed when he pinned it. And with that, he went back to his work and never picked his head up again to look at me, even as I was pleading with him to help me figure something out because I need to wear the dress in a wedding this weekend. Throughout the course of the one-sided conversation, he told me to file a complaint with the BBB or to sue him. They also told me that this dress wasn't an Alexander McQueen so I shouldn't expect it to lay flat after being altered. I reminded them that as the professionals, that's something they should have talked to me about before doing the alteration. One of the men did originally offer to give me my $25 alteration fee back, but then as they were about to do that (via venmo), he changed his mind and ripped the phone out of the other guy's hands and rudely snapped that he changed his mind and wasn't giving me any money back. Save yourself your clothes, money, and mental stability and avoid this place at all costs. UPDATE: I took the dress to another alterations specialist who was horrified to see the dress now compared to what it looked like in the picture from before taking it to John & Marios. And unfortunately she can't fix it because they cut the material. So the dress is ruined and I'm back to the drawing board with 5 days until the wedding. read more

I love these guys...I have gone in with some unusual requests and they always take me seriously. One example is when I bought my doggie bat wings to wear on Halloween on Amazon that apparently were puppy sized and he is a 25 pounder. Adjustments were done and the wings fit....I have also brought in overalls that were straight legged and I requested to make them somehow a boot cut opening and they also came out great. On the more normal spectrum, hemming is $15 and is done quickly. read more

In an oral communications class, I once gave a speech about the benefits of being short for our entertainment speech assignment. I talked about Dr. Stuart Little's very scientific experiment (all of my references were made up), and about how short people can fit through any sized door and win almost every game of limbo and hide-and-go-seek. Unfortunately, those with shorter legs almost always need to hem their pants. Darn. John's is a family-run business. When I first entered the cozy shop, I was greeted with warm smiles by all three family members, and was tended to almost immediately. A customer walked in right after me who needed to get another one of his suits altered, so their work seemed promising. After leaving 7 articles of clothing with them, I returned a week later to pay and pick up my items. I was incredibly happy with the hemmed pants, but the pants that I needed taken in at the sides and waist were still a bit baggy, and not exactly like the measurements and fitting that I had done with them the prior week. More than that, the sewing job on a pair that had a tear was a bit sloppy and made the tear that much more noticeable. I was the most upset about a job they had done on a skirt; there was a tear below the zipper line, but when it came back to me they had sewn part of the bottom of the zipper line so that I couldn't zip all the way down anymore. While I can still get into the skirt, this lack of attention to detail disappointed me the most. Prices were also a bit high and I felt that I paid much more for what I received. Likelihood of another visit: I was very happy with their pleasant, friendly personalities and was happy to know that 7 alterations would only take a week, but I don't think I'll come back unless I need some pants hemmed. 2.5 stars. read more

When I asked the Bloomingdales worker who had helped me where their alterations department was, she quickly pulled out a business card for John's. It would be quicker, cheaper and they do a great job on denim, she told me. I'm sure the store wouldn't be happy she's pushing money outside their walls, and she's likely getting a kick-back from John's (respect the hustle), but man, was that a good recommendation. After quickly trying to locate the department store's tailor and getting frustrated with the lack of attention, I walked the block and a half to John's, where I was promptly measured. They completely understand how to make things fit perfectly even if I go in unsure of exactly how to alter a piece. It took me many months to find a decent tailor and even when I bought bespoke suits for thousands of dollars a piece, the job doesn't compare to John's work. After purchasing my first pair of Adriano Goldschmeid Matchbox Slim Fit in Heat, I needed to taper and hem my jeans. The sales associate provided me with the card for John's. This was three years ago. I have lived in Hell's Kitchen, West Chelsea, the Upper West Side, SoHo and then Brooklyn. I will still only go to John's for my tailoring. Why? I came here for the positive reviews I read. I brought a new $900 suit for alteration. I made it clear to the tailor that I want to make sure he understood every single detail about my preferences. I asked if I can try it in after he finishes his alterations, he said don't worry about it, we will deliver it to your place and if you don't like it we will make sure it fits you. I agreed and brought back my suit because it was almost ruined and no way I can ware it. He refused to do any alterations unless I pay extra. Bottom line: not professional, not honest.
