I took three items to her. A new Kiton outerwear jacket a size large needed to have the shoulder lifted and sleeve shortened. It took a bit of negotiation with Julia agree to the scope of work. The result was excellent. The second item was a pair of LV jeans, which needed shortening. Thst came out fine. The third was a pair of Loro Piana pants which had been overly shortened at Access Cleaners on East 74th Street, who are fone for dry cleaning and shirt laundering. As requested, Julia did what she could to salvage them. When we picked up my items this afternoon, Julia's last words to come back if anything was unsatisfactory. The next time we go back will be if we need something else altered. read more

They did a decent job on a shirt singlet I wore running a race for a charity organization. Had to be shortened a bit and I needed it returned quickly as I was traveling to the event by the weekend. It was ready on the day as promised and fit correctly, simple alterations done right. No complaints on my part. read more

I really hate to write bad reviews, but I am so incredibly disappointed in my experience with Julia Custom Tailor. I dropped off three very expensive hockey jerseys to have custom lettering and numbering sewn on. After picking them up and bringing them home, I noticed that on one of the jerseys, the numbering on one of the sleeves was not centered to match the other. It was off center by about an inch or two. And on the second jersey, the season patch was not centered on the shoulder to be in line with the sleeve number. Photos attached for reference. The first photo is of the correct sleeve, the second and third are the incorrect placements. I called immediately and brought it back in to be fixed. Julia told me no problem. Fast forward about 30 minutes later, I received a call from Julia telling me the number needed to stay where it was because the removal caused damage to the fabric. She sent me the last attached photo and discussed that the shoulder patch on the second jersey would also need to stay where it was to avoid damage. I could not believe what I was hearing after the insane amount of money that I paid. How in the world does a professional tailor not have the capability to remove stitching without causing damage to such expensive jerseys?? I had no choice at that point but to accept the fact that the numbering would need to stay off centered. I am so beyond upset and disappointed - these were supposed to be custom Christmas gifts and now look like fake, inauthentic jerseys that I bought for $30 on dhgate. It's a shame, because the quality of the stitching is actually quite excellent. When I asked about a refund (only partial refund mind you, since some of the other lettering and numbering I had done was correct) she said no and that I could get 20% off next time. When I asked for that in writing she said "No. I will remember." Why the heck would I return as a customer? I paid $120 for this work and it completely fell short by a mile. By reading the other reviews, my guess is that Julia will respond with some sort of excuse, claiming that she always tries her best for her customers and that she works hard. While I'm sure that's true, this outcome is still completely unacceptable. We're all human and we're not perfect, and I'm a firm believer that mistakes happen. I try to be understanding when they do. But at the end of the day, it's how you make right on those mistakes and how you grow from them. Julia does not care about making things right and does not take accountability. Take your business elsewhere. read more

Customer service is horrible. I feel there was miscommunication on what I wanted versus what she could do but was super dismissive when talking. I saw the reviews and She told me if I did not like it she could make changes so I went through with it. Got the final product and she hemmed them well but the waist and crotch was not what I wanted. when I communicated it was not what I wanted she said she couldn't do what I wanted. I would recommend to go somewhere else if you want someone who takes time to talk through what you want and explains it clearly to you. read more

I took two pairs of brand new $350 pants to be hemmed and prepaid $70 for both. Julia personally pinned them at the correct length. When I picked them up, one was correct and one had been hemmed significantly shorter to the point that I couldn't wear them. I returned on Nov 18 to show Julia, and she personally apologized and admitted something must have happened between pinning and altering them--she suggested that the pins may have accidentally moved or that her employee made a mistake. She offered to look for the fabric remnants and to reattach themt. She still hadn't called me by Nov 20, so I returned, but she said she was still looking for the fabric. I came back a third time, on Nov 24, and since she still hasn't found the fabric, I said I was no longer interested in having her repair them (especially since that would have changed the entire look of the pant since they don't have seems) and asked her to reimburse me $385 ($350 for the pants and $35 for them hem charge). She said she would order the pants herself, which I thought was odd, but I agreed and sent her the link. Since I hadn't heard from her by Dec 1, I texted her asking for an update, but she didn't respond. I sent her another text on Dec 4, and she responded saying, "it's difficult to charge such a large amount to the workforce. Our business is very slow right now. If you can find a similar fabric, we can make a pair or two of the same pairs." We exchanged a handful of texts in which I explained that it had been over two weeks, she had been stringing me along with no intention of replacing the pants or reimbursing me, and that the only solution was for her to reimburse me. She still refused, instead offering to make me new pants, which I was not interested in. She stopped replying to my texts after I said I would be taking her to small claims court. I went into the shop later in the day, and she said she was willing to go to court because she had been before (which is an odd thing to admit). In the end, Julia refused to take accountability for an error she made, tried to blame her employee, and then said they couldn't afford to reimburse me due to business being slow, and strung me along with lies and excuses for over two weeks with no intention of ever making the situation right. I do not recommend you patronize this business. *Edit in response to the owner's reply below: Yes, I said I would write a bad review--because my experience with this business warranted one--but I never said I would "humiliate you in front of everyone." That accusation is completely false, and unfortunately continues a pattern of dishonesty. On my final visit to the store, I asked, "How can we resolve this?" and even offered to let you reimburse me in installments if replacing the pants all at once was difficult. You refused to compromise or consider any solution other than having me track down new fabric so you could remake the pants--an option that is not at all equivalent to the damage you and your business caused. It is not the customer's responsibility to absorb the cost of a mistake made by the business. If a tailor damages a garment, they should reimburse the customer--regardless of the garment's value. It should also be noted that there is no sign in the store or on the website stating that customers are liable if the shop makes a mistake after the garment has been pinned. Again, I strongly advise against using this business for high-value alterations. You risk them making an error and then refusing to take responsibility for it. read more

I went here last year and thought they did a good job with hemming some items. But the past two times I've come here they could not locate my items, which I found a bit panic inducing bc the clothes were expensive and unworn (thus why I was having alterations done). The first time I had to leave and come back a different day because they could not find my pants when I went to pick them up. I thought this was a one time thing. But then the second time, months later, when I went to pick up different items I got altered they could not find them again and asked if I could come back later in the day. I asked "can you not find my items?" and told yes. Right at that moment they found them. I breathed a sigh of relief but when I left and decided the anxiety of never being able to find my stuff when I got there was not something I wanted to do again. Lastly, maybe I wasn't clear with my instructions, which is possible, but I didn't think my pants were taken in as much as I wanted or much at all--they still looked super wide. I went to another tailor and she totally understood what I was saying when I said the pants were giving circus tent--she took them in the amount I wanted and for around the same price. read more

I used to come here all the time when the nice old woman ran the place. Went revently to have jeans hemmed. $30, which seems like...a lot. Still, not the worst thing in the world had the work been good. Waaaay too short. She had spent all of 8 seconds setting the length. I asked if she thought it was too short, she dismissively said it was fine. It wasn't. So jeans ruined (she didn't leave enough material to adjust better). My daughter had her graduation and prom dresses shortened here. Her prom dress had a mermaid skirt and not only was it altered lopsided, the lining was longer than the outside layer. Unfortunately, the store is so cramped that she couldn't walk around so we did not notice when we picked up the dress. After having this place recommended we took in two parkas whose faux fur trim had been ruined while cleaning with replacements for her to swap out. Beyond the fact that we twice came upon the expected ready date with her not even remembering that she had this project, she ended up giving us the hoods back with the new trim, but did not finish the edges/piping at all. To me, this is a huge deal breaker. She took a fair amount for the project, we didn't even haggle with her in the price. She decided how much a project like this should cost, and then, after literally two months, she gives us an unfinished project. Julia herself is incredible and I've been to her countless times, but she hired a young 20 year old guy to do the tailoring now to cut costs who ruined my vintage skirt. I asked her to alter the hem and without my knowledge, she handed it off to him who took away the A line shape, ruined the hem with mismatched double stitching, and shortened it beyond what I said. When I asked what happened she admitted that he did it. She gave me my money back which was nice but I'm just so disappointed because I went to three other tailors after who say they can't fix the skirt. She shouldn't be advertising that she is the one doing the tailoring when she's handing it off to someone who is inexperienced. That's not what I'm paying for. read more

Hi all! I am a week late to post but here we go! I was leaving to travel to Europe and the day I was leaving I realized that a strap from my favorite dress I was packing came undone from the seam. Brought four expensive dresses to be tailored in different ways and two of them are pretty much ruined. Had a slit cut in a cult Gaia maxi dress and she cut the lining in a completely different part of the dress, so the slit was covered by the lining. They then sewed the dress to the lining where the slit is and now the dress is misshaped and doesn't sit right. It was an $800 dress and now it's ruined, I showed the issue to her and she said there's nothing she can to to make it look better. One of the other dresses was dropped off clean but somehow it's dirty now. When I initially dropped everything off she told me 3 weeks, I came in 3 weeks later and she hadn't even started on them and forgot what she was tailoring on two of the dresses. You have to pay cash so there's no way of getting your money back for the tailoring. Pretty much out almost $1000 because of the dress being ruined and the cost of her poor tailoring job.
