A little back story I have been coming to Genki sushi for over 7 years, chef Danny has owned it for over the last 6 years. I was stationed in Okinawa Japan for 5 years, and have developed a great love the their food. When ever I eat at Genki sushi, I am instantly back in Japan enjoying the great food. I have enjoyed every dish and every sushi I have had. I travel over a hour at least once a month to enjoy the food. The staff is always friendly, and very helpful. Sometimes they get really busy so it takes a little longer to get your food. But it is always worth the wait. I would encourage anyone to come eat here. Now with that said they do not require masks here. It is posted on the door before you enter, and right after you enter. And incase you can not read they tell you that the chef does not wear a mask. So if you do not feel safe eating in a place that does not require a mask, then please call and order take out. read more

Great place for sushi in Wilmington!! I highly recommend. The sushi was fresh and flavorful. The service was also impeccable -- everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. We got to the restaurant around 6 on a Thursday. We made a reservation based off the reviews, which was a good idea but probably not necessary for a Thursday. It's a small restaurant, and though there were a few empty tables, most of them were reserved. The food came out quickly and was well-plated. It is definitely about time I updated my review after visiting Genki a few times now. Genki is one of the best sushi restaurants in town because the fish they serve is much fresher than most competitors in town, and the owners really know sushi. Genki is very traditional, so if you need special rolls with lots of "extras" like sauces, toppings, etc., you won't find much of that here. They have gotten a few "bigger" rolls, though. I do not remember them having the Rainbow roll the first time I was there, but indeed made it available my most recent visit. The servers usually start you with a complimentary seaweed & edamame salad, which is always delicious. The service, I admit, is usually pretty slow. I am always prepared to wait a little longer with sushi, but the sushi here usually takes longer than the average place. The servers usually do warn you though (last time I was here with a party of 4, and they let us know the sushi would take at least 45 minutes. The estimate was pretty accurate). In my opinion, it is always worth the wait. I can really taste the difference in the fish quality here. Since there are less special rolls available, I am always pleasantly surprised how much the bill is. I tend to spend less and am very happy to support this business. It is a husband and wife team, I believe, and you can really taste the love they put into their food. A true gem in Wilmington. read more

Disappointing. I am visiting from out of state and happened to eat here on a busy Saturday night. I am not an expert on Japanese cuisine but I have eaten at several very good restaurants in Boston, NYC, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. This place seemed somewhat trendy to me and the menu looked diverse but a bit off. For one, they offer egg drop soup (as well as the traditional miso soup). Kimchi is also listed as a side dish. Japanese restaurants typically don't have either of those since one is Chinese and the other is Korean. I ordered the sushi dinner with miso soup and salad. The soup was average. My son had the egg drop and said it was the saltiest egg drop soup he's ever had. The salad was the stereotypical featured at many Japanese restaurants with a ginger soy dressing but the minced ginger was extremely thick and practically solid since the extremely watery sauce was at the bottom of the bowl. The salad itself was fine but the dressing's odd separation of solid from liquid components didn't work. There was a decent amount of sushi and it tasted ok but it was lukewarm as if it had been sitting out for a while. I prefer my raw seafood to be chilled. I hadn't read the menu where it was mentioned the sushi came prepared with wasabi so I had more wasabi than usual since I put quite a bit in my soy sauce. I enjoy wasabi so that wasn't a problem. I haven't been to a sushi place that does this in several decades so I wasn't expecting it. However I grew up eating sushi pre-seasoned with wasabi when I was a child so it's not a new thing for me. One of my sons had the Naruto Tuna and this was rather disappointing. Danny's ponzu was nothing special. Another son had the Tonkatsu curry dinner and he did enjoy it although it was spicier than typical Japanese curry. He's half Indian so he can handle spicy foods, no problem. Staff were friendly but somewhat inattentive. One of my son's kimchi side dish never arrived but he decided he didn't want a side dish after all, so I didn't bug the waitstaff for a replacement. None of them ever noticed the absence. While my party's dinner choices were of mixed quality, overall I can't recommend this place. I don't mind the odd mixing of Chinese and Korean foods but lukewarm sushi is an automatic thumbs down from me. read more

The pride of ownership with authentic Japanese flavors makes for a delicious meal. We came on a recommendation by friends, and needless to say, Genki did not disappoint. Ambiance: yes, it's in a strip mall and the window view is of the street and Petsmart, but the food is so outstanding I certainly can overlook this detail. The restaurant is small and filled with regulars Service: the owners wife walks around to make sure everyone is happy with their meal. She brought us edamame because our entrees were taking a bit longer. Food: traditional Japanese sushi, plain good/fresh seafood with great sushi rice. Sashimi dinner $17: so freaking good, and you can substitute any fish Sushi deluxe dinner $24: 7 pieces of sushi plus a tuna or California roll. Yum. Just yum. My family of four (2 adults and 2 kids under 3) came here for dinner one night and loved everything we had! The fried rice (for my son) was the best we've ever tasted. We also got him chicken skewers and I had to stop myself from eating them all. We got a few rolls and the kama kama salmon (BOMB) and shared everything. At the end, they gave us a few homemade candies that were perfectly sweet and savory. The servers seemed happy and well-treated! Some were masked and some were not but we had plenty of warning!! So refreshing to see a company that cares about free will! Our server was the owner's daughter and was amazing! She made us all feel so welcome. I commend this restaurant for caring about their employees while providing DELICIOUS food and creating such an inviting environment for their customers. Also, I saw some reviews mention their prices being too high and honestly, I'm not sure how anyone could think that...? We ate A LOT and had some leftovers. My husband also had a few beers and our bill came out to less than $60. I was stuffed and let me tell you, I can eat like a freakin champ. We are in town visiting my mother-in-law at the hospital and wanted sushi. We saw the guy who drives an hour each month and had to give this place a try. Well to the guy who drives an hour, we say we will be driving 3.5 hours for this fantastic find! We had an assortment of sashimi and one specialty roll. This place is worth the drive and the wait!! But again, if you are fearful of no masks, then order take out or skip this hidden gem altogether. We have made reservations for Saturday night to ensure we have a seat before we leave town. Had a wildly uneven carry-out order from here. The Ikura/Salmon Roe sushi was so scant on the Salmon Roe it didn't even cover the rice. They completely forgot one of our appitizers, it wasn't on the bill, though it's on my credit card. Two of the rolls were completely unremarkable, I could have gotten them from the supermarket. Place was packed and it didn't take long to order and receive my food either. Struggled with putting the review on was going to order again to see if it was going to be better the next visit. But the sushi rice was so mushy and gummy, it ruined it for me . So I'm thinking I just was there on a bad rice night. I did though enjoy the homemade Taffy I sampled. The bang bang shrimp were the best I've had and my husband raved about the miso soup. We got a variety of rolls and they were all fresh and delicious. Disappointments across the board. We were in town on vacation and found Genki via google maps with good reviews, mostly. Miso soup was good, sesame dressing was rough and my side salad was all lettuce with one slice of celery and about 3 shredded carrots. My teriyaki chicken was heavily peppered with no teriyaki in sight. My chicken was extremely tough to chew and very dry. My husband and his friend both ordered spicy tuna rolls which were hard to get down. My husbands Rainbow rolls was actually fairly good. Would not come back. read more

This place is AMAZING!! We went here for the first time and we were very impressed. They have sushi rolls that other places don't have and we love to try new things. The chef is awesome and everyone loves him; there are a lot of regular customers. Our server, Adam, was the best server I've ever had as he was funny, helpful, talkative, and knowledgable. He gave great service. Also- try the plum Kikkoman wine! We really enjoyed this place. The second time we went for lunch and it was great again! They have lunch specials, and our waitress, Sophia, was exceptional. She had such a great attitude even though she had to serve the entire waitress by herself. While I'm no expert this place reminded me of my time in japan! The curry was just like Cocos and the sushi was super fresh. The pork gyoza was on point although I wish I ordered it fried. The wasabi burned like genuine wasabi and they all sang welcome when we walked in. There was an hour wait right after we sat down so definitely get a reservation. Just left disappointed. We use to live in Southern California and I've ate sushi all over the country so we know good sushi/sashimi. While we had great service and the appetizers started off great, the sushi/sashimi was very disappointing. We had the black cod miso soup, yellowtail collar and a spring roll. All were delicious! Unfortunately when the sushi/sashimi came out, my family and I were very disappointed. The portion of sashimi is tiny!!! The tuna on top of our sushi roll was no better. We get better sushi and larger portions in landlocked Missouri. I would recommend sticking with the cooked food. read more
