It's been a few years since I first dined at Masa. The first time it was okay. This time was a complete turn-round. My lunch was excellent!! I ordered the sashimi lunch combo, which included 9 pieces, chef's choice, and a California roll. I had the choice of a starter, so I ordered the salad with ginger dressing on the side. The only negative comment is that the tuna had a lot of the silver "vein" which should have been removed. It made it hard to eat, although the tuna itself was very tender. I also had hot green tea, which was nice to have on a cold day. Service was just okay. She never came to the table to see if I needed anything. And as I left, I thanked her but got no reply. For the amount of sushi and salad, it's a very good deal. I will definitely consider this place again for lunch. read more

It has been over 2 years since I had been here but I stopped in and after eating lunch I looked back at my previous review and I agree with what I said before. The lunch sashimi was not good. I ate all of the sashimi but the tuna was so rough and such a big piece that I couldn't cut it. The ginger dressing for the salad was really good though. I had heard mixed reviews about this sushi restaurant but had to find out for myself. The atmosphere was very cozy and gave a traditional feel to the restaurant. The staff were very polite and our waitress came straight to the table to take our order. The miso soup was very standard and not as flavorful as some other restaurants I have tried. The drink was absolutely delicious and had the perfect balance of sweet and alcohol. The sushi rolls were ON POINT. The fish is fresh and delicious, our waitress, Madelyn, was super sweet, and the environment was great. There is always a ton of parking since it's by the mall. Great service, great food, great vibes. Simple as that. The ladies who helped us were extraordinary from walking through the door to exiting the building. Even the sushi masters in the back made sure we were taken care of when they thought we hadn't been helped yet! On to the food, I had the salmon maki and the lucky cat roll. Both were so good, I probably ate them in under 5 minutes! My partner had the Gyudon (I think that's how that was spelled) and loved it. He said it reminded him of Yoshinoya, but better. I had high hopes for this place. It is fairly new and looks stunning inside. The service was fine. The food was okay. That's really all I have to say! Everything was just average. There are several Asian spots around town that I prefer for my hibachi. The sushi looks good and my boyfriend enjoyed his. However, I already have some regular sushi places so I won't add this to the rotation. I had the hibachi shrimp which had a thicker, ginger/teriyaki sauce to it where I prefer my hibachi to be a soy base. Nonetheless, it was good but a bit more than I would have liked (pretty sure it was around $22). It really isn't bad in a pinch, but I probably won't make it a habit. read more

Made a reservation on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. There were still a lot of open tables during that time, but started to fill up quickly. It was very clean inside. I loved the overhead hanging bamboo. This isn't described in the menu that the Masa classic woks and Masa specialty entrees come with a choice of either white or brown rice and a soup or salad. Dishes such as the Masa fried rice and Masa chow fun come with a combination of all the high protein foods. Started off with the vegetable roll, which is vegan and comes with tofu skin and a variety of vegetables. This was good and I would get it again. I tried one of the Masa specialty entrees, Shaking Beef with brown rice and salad with ginger dressing. The shaking beef dish was good, particularly with hot sauce. The beef was tender and the sauce was a thick sweet brown sauce. The sauce is described in the menu as their famous black pepper sauce, which is not spicy at all, to me anyway. The only chili sauce they had was Sriracha. It was nice they gave me extra brown sauce for the dish, even though I didn't ask for it. I liked the abundance and variety of veggies that came with the dish. I wasn't able to finish the whole dish. This house side salad was good overall, just simple chopped lettuce and julienned carrots. The ginger salad dressing wasn't the best ginger dressing I've ever had though. The waiter was very nice and helpful in picking out dishes. This is a good spot to check out if you're looking for a place to eat while shopping at the mall. read more

I've been wanting to stop here since I saw they recently opened. It's looks like a brand new building and the inside was very cool with a modern look. The place is smaller but the bamboo and tile give it a lot of style and charm. Our waiter was very friendly and patient since I took awhile deciding. He offered suggestions but I went with the teriyaki chicken. The teriyaki was a classic dish and I picked it because it listed a lot of veggies. It was tasty and I'm glad it wasn't too sweet. My friend's dish listed only asparagus but she had a lot more veggies then the menu said. I'll be back to try some of their other dishes and definitely try some sushi rolls sometime. read more

4.5 stars for this place is a stretch in my opinion. The Health score is 93, the Rolls were flavorful but scrawny, Ashley our server worked very hard to hurry us through the meal, and no one was coming in. She was friendly but just does not know how to control table tempo. All in all the food was decent and the service okay, the 2 stand outs, the drinks and the Edamame. Indochine has better rolls and looking at the table behind us, when they left tons of food on their table, maybe not so good, or full, or just wasteful eaters? Not bad and Not excellent, Right in the Middle of the road. So dont pass them by, just keep your expectations low and enjoy it for what it is, okay. read more

Always love going here. I've been going for awhile I am gf and I appreciate that they went through there trouble to get me a salad with oil and salt! I love there sushi and it always depends on who you get the first couple time I went amazing service but one server wasnt the best but no longer works there now. I stopped in looking for sushi.. I ordered dumplings, lunch combo of 2 rolls and soup. It was a very cute space. Very nice for being as small as it was. It's in shopping center by mall. The miso soup was good, came out hot but the odd thing was no tofu in it at all..the dumplings were ok but tasted very similar to my frozen ones at home. The sushi I got was salmon and avocado the eel cucumber and avocado. Nothing extravagant about it the flavor was good but the eel was almost non existent. One pic shows it was mostly avocado and a sliver of eel.. enough to get flavor but not as much as I hoped there would be. I had wonderful service but in all honestly I would probably not go back here. There's so many sushi places in Wilmington I'm just not sure this one's on my return to list. read more

We come here often and it's always been good, this last time was a total fail. Our agadashi tofu was lame, barely fried and the dipping sauce was not the same, had no flavor. My sweet potato sushi roll was supposed to be tempura and that it was not, it was just a mashed up sweet potato inside a sushi roll, didn't have that crunch that makes tempura so good. I asked the girl and she said yes it's tempura, to which I said, no, it doesn't have that crunch like tempura it's soft like a sweet mashed potato. She didn't offer to make it right. I was in the Independence mall area and decided it was time to eat and saw there were a few places that were new to the area. Masa Sushi was one and when I looked up their menu I saw they had some awesome lunch specials. It is a smaller location, so if you are going during peak times, it would be wise to get a reservation. For lunch, it was fine and had a handful of tables taken. I sat at the bar and was able to order fairly quickly. The bartender pointed out a few things and I ended up going with the Sushi Lunch special and a cocktail. The cocktail was made with Sake and was super delicious and for the lunch special, you get TWO rolls and it was $12. That also included a soup or salad. The lunch was well worth the money. Leaving Trader Joe's last night and had a sudden craving for sushi. Had Siri find sushi nearby and this is the one I chose. Ordered Salmon Avacado, Asparagus Tempura, and Tuna Maki. Rolls were fresh and rolled tightly, rice was just the right amount of sticky, and the seafood seemed fresh. The dining area was very clean and well lit with what looked like a nice selection of beer, wine, Saki, and spirits. I was greeted promptly and my order was ready in the promised ten minutes. They also get bonus points for actually having a Japanese Whisky for me to sip while I waited. I give extra points to any Asian restaurant that stocks a bottle of Toki behind the bar. It's a $40 bottle and should be a no-brainer but very few do. Will be back to dine inside soon. read more

I got the lunch special today with a coworker. It's an awesome deal 2 rolls and a soup/salad for $12. It was difficult to order because there were no descriptions of the rolls on the menu so you kinda just had to guess based off the name. I got the sunshine roll, which I know to be baked at other places but this one was not. I also got the yellowtail and scallion roll and it was decent. The rolls I had did not really compare to other sushi options in wilmington. I don't think I'll come back but would consider it given the great price. read more

Yeah, finally a sushi restaurant close by that has high quality sushi/sashimi and very yummy menu items for those people that don't like sushi. My husband and I had a little bit of everything, sushi, sashimi, appetizers and a main dish...we were happy with each one. I had the shrimp tempura roll, Shumai, tuna nigiri, yellowtail sashimi, and we shared the yaki soba. We could not have been happier with everything we tried. The ambiance inside is just as nice, it's slightly modern decor with Asian influence was delightful and a pleasant environment to dine in. We will be back to try more deliciousness! Tuesday evening, I decided on sushi for dinner and I've been wanting to try out Wilmington's newest sushi spot...Masa Sushi & Eastern Cuisine. I opted not to go for one of their specialty rolls on this visit since it was just me and it was also takeout. Once my wife and I decide to dine inside...then I'm sure we'll both try their signature vittles. FOOD: For my first visit, I placed a call ahead order consisting of an order of tuna maki, spicy salmon avocado and spicy scallop cucumber rolls. Each roll was adequately sized and well rolled. I would rank the tuna maki as my #1 in this order, closely followed by the spicy scallop roll and then the spicy salmon avocado roll. Tuna maki is about as simple as it gets. Nori, rice and fresh tuna...rolled up. If any sushi chef messes this one up, they shouldn't be a sushi chef. Most of all sushi restaurants can make this roll taste good as long as the tuna, nori and rice are fresh. Am I right? Masa did just this with their maki roll. The tuna was deep red in color, fresh and was a proper amount for the size of each roll. The spicy scallop and cucumber roll was similar due to how fresh and buttery the scallops were (no fishy taste at all). Coming in third was the spicy salmon and avocado roll. This roll wasn't bad at all but ranks average in comparison to the countless spicy salmon and avocado rolls I've had in my lifetime. These weren't rolled as tight, leaving the roll to be slightly on the loose side and one piece of the 6, had a small chunk of salmon that wasn't near as firm as the other 5 with a softer consistency. Unsure why but it just stood out from the other bites. Overall, the sushi was very good, their spicy sauce had a wonderful flavor and each morsel was fine in size. SCORE: 4.1 STARS!! SERVICE: As I walked in, there was only one patron dining inside and Madison greeted me with a smile, promptly. My order was already waiting for me at the bar, while the sushi chef did his thing in the back. I asked if it would be ok for me to take some pics and they emphatically said yes. I felt welcomed and invited by the staff and am looking forward to experiencing full service here soon. The place's decor and ambience is cool. There is bamboo everywhere and the bar area seems like a place I could come for a few hours, catch a game on the large TV and devour dozens of sushi pieces. Everything was super clean and the lighting inside is just right. SCORE: 5 STARS!! OVERALL SCORE: For a basic sushi order, it met expectations for the most part. It also has me intrigued about their specialty rolls so I will be visiting here again soon to try them out. The service was great and the interior dining space is satisfying. Grabbing a birthday lunch with a friend who had this place in mind. She was spot on when she said it was amazing! The customer service was great and the server was friendly, communicative and suggested food items. The sushi was a 5/5! So yummy, my favorite out of my plate was the eel roll. We were at the mall today and decided to stop in. Great choice. First of all my server was brand new. Like she just started today. She was so sweet and accommodating. Our baby dropped his bottle and they gave us hot water to clean it. The drinks were really good. The sushi equally good! Very fresh not fishy at all.
