    Maki Special 3 Rolls ,
    Rudy M.

This place has limited seats (about 20-30people max). Server was nice and service was fast. Menu was on a QR code, so better know what to order ahead. I ordered pork gyoza and 3 maki combo (spicy seafood roll, eel and avocado roll, and fashion roll) that comes with a complimentary miso soup. Sushi tasted okay and the gyoza is okay too.

Came here today with an old friend who eats here often with his wife. Genki Ya is a cozy little restaurant with friendly service and delicious maki rolls. I especially recommend coming at lunch when the restaurant is not so busy. Prices for lunch are quite reasonable. For about $15 I had soup, salad (with an awesome tasting dressing) and two large flavorful maki rolls (spicy tuna and spice tuna with avocado).

I always enjoyed Genki Ya's Boston location so it was pleasant surprise to discover they were also in Brookline. It's more of a no-frills spot at this location but the service and sushi is just as good. They have an amazing spicy tuna on top of fried nori rice that I always get and recommend. And my friend and I tried a variety of rolls that incorporated shrimp tempura, yellowtail, scallop, etc. and every one was very fresh and tasty. Bonus they have a rare/coveted liquor license so we were able to enjoy wine with our meal as well!

Overall everything was great! The fish that we ordered tasted fresh. This is a solid sushi place to grab a bite. Definitely on the more casual side. I'm not sure how busy it can get but they have only a handful of tables inside and out. Definitely call ahead if you have more than 4 ppl. The menu is extensive but a bit hard to order since the website they use is a bit busy.

I got takeout for my birthday and had a really good experience! The sushi is reasonably priced and everyone had a good time. I had around 15 people over so I bought three platters, gyoza, and chicken. All were really good! It isn't the cheapest place but I think it is worth to treat yourself every once in a while. If you're going to have a party or get together, I would recommend the platters!

Went on a slow day so there was plenty of seating and food came out fast. The Salmon Torch Roll smelled really good and the outside is tasty, but the inside was so dry. It needed mayo to wake it up or the salmon just needs to be cooked a little less. Spicy Tuna Tempura Roll was fine but the tempura batter was not crispy. The tuna wasn't spicy either so it made the flavor of the roll flat and mushy. Overall, decent amount of food for the price but flavor wasn't the best.

Great value! I ordered via Postmates and my order was very much delayed which was annoying but I wasn't in a rush to eat. The rolls aren't the best rolls ever, but they do scratch the itch for sushi. You get what you pay for and I think ~$20 for these rolls is more than fair. The fish was cut generously in the tuna and salmon maki. The spicy tuna wasn't at all spicy, but tasted really good with the green onion (almost like a negitoro maki on the cheap). The makimono combo comes with bland miso soup to wash it all down. The philly roll was ok as well. There wasn't an overwhelming amount of cream cheese and they kindly substituted raw salmon instead of smoked salmon as I requested. Overall 4/5 for value, 3.5/5 for quality/taste

This is a takeout review only - I haven't been to this Genki Ya in person (although I have been to other locations). M and I ordered Genki Ya through GrubHub last night and had a great dinner. Delivery was a bit slow - our order was postponed by about 20 minutes but we got regular updates through GrubHub so it was okay. Possibly was a driver issue and not the restaurant anyways. The great: You know what miso soup is. You know what you're getting. This was classic and delicious but with the nice addition of woodear mushrooms (the little white ones) which I love and lots of chunks of tofu. Likewise with the edamame - you know what you're getting but props to GY that they were somehow still warm when they arrived. Pan fried pork gyoza was also delicious and classic. Lastly we loved the sashimi appetizer. Six pieces of fish total, super fresh and tasty, the salmon in particular was super buttery and melted in your mouth. The good: We also split two Maki rolls, the spicy scallop and the Boston flower. Flavors in spicy scallop were great but the pieces were sliced super thin so it was quite difficult to pick them up without it falling apart. Tasty and I would order again. The flower roll was pretty good but I'd be open to trying others rather than reordering. The okay: we also split the tori no kagare - Japanese fried chicken. This was not at all what I was expecting. They were pretty big pieces of chicken without a ton of breading/crust and I thought they were a bit tough/overcooked. Similarly the torched salmon tatake was a little overdone. Each of the pieces were almost fully cooked rather than lightly torched. Flavors were good but I wouldn't order again. The bad: nothing!! This is a solid take out spot.

Reasonably priced sushi with thick chunks of fresh fish and not too much rice! There aren't that many tables since the restaurant is fairly small but I didn't have trouble getting seated immediately on a Saturday evening. They have coat racks in the back next to the restroom. For two people, we got the Genki ichiban (sushi rice wrapped in seaweed and deep fried in tempura batter, topped with spicy tuna and roe), salmon avocado roll, and spicy maki combo (came with spicy yellowtail, spicy salmon, and spicy tuna rolls. Also came with miso soup). Their more basic rolls range from $6-8 and their fancier/special rolls are closer to $10 or more. The spicy maki combo was $20 for 3 rolls, which I thought was a pretty good deal. The Genki ichiban is worth trying! Although it comes with 4 pieces, each piece is big. The spicy tuna layer is very thick. The tempura battered rice is warm which contrasts well with the cold spicy tuna. The only downside is that you can't really taste the roe, and the dish in general is kind of bland. The spicy rolls weren't that spicy. They didn't overload the rolls with a bunch of spicy mayo. However the fish-to-rice ratio was awesome. Each piece came with a lot of fish and not too much rice, and they also rolled the rice in scallions. Even though the rolls weren't as spicy as I had hoped, they were very fresh and good quality. The rolls also had a bit of tempura flakes inside to add texture/crunch. Continuing the theme of rolls packed with fish, the salmon in the salmon and avocado roll was nice and thick! The roll itself was only around $8 which was a good deal since the fish was so fresh. Their miso soup has enoki mushrooms in addition to tofu and wakame. It's not too salty but is packed with umami. If you're looking for a good sushi spot that won't break your wallet, Genki Ya is the place to go!

I love the salmon and unagi rolls and nigiri here! Very fresh and the salmon has good texture. The sushi here takes out really well. It's definitely on the pricier side for casual sushi especially when dining in, but I'm a big fan of the lunch options.

Great food that is slightly more expensive than other sushi places I've been to but it's also in Coolidge corner which is notoriously more expensive. Service is fast and friendly. There are tables inside and out when's it nice outside.

First time here and it was great! We did the AYCE all-you-can-eat on a Monday (they only do it…read moreMonday and Tuesdays) - got there around 7:30p and even though it was very full, we got seated quickly with a table for 3. It's $50 for the regular AYCE or $80 for the Premium AYCE. We opted for the former, and it was plenty great. We have done lots of AYCE sushi and I will say this is the BEST of them - I think it's because it's the same grade sushi as they would normally do Ala carte on other nights. The $50 menu had plenty of sashimi and regular nigiri (sushi with rice) options and some Thai too. We had mostly the sashimi Salmon, Tuna, Yellowtail, Octopus, a few rolls, some edamame, gyoza, shumai. My favorites were the salmon, as the cuts were large, thick and amazing silky, and the gyoza, as it was perfectly crispy. The Pad Thai was bit way too sweet for my taste - a skip for me next time. The decor is very nice - reminded me of a dive Tokyo bar. Service was quick and very attentive. We will be back!

With what…read moreseems to be a recent price increase, now $50++ allows access to a good variety of sushi/sashimi, on top of apps, ramen, poke bowls, and cooked rice/noodle dishes. Whereas $80++ offers diners a set of amount of uni, plus unlimited amount of everything else, wagyu included. Sounds like a good deal, especially when one can eat a lot. Even as we are no longer Team Eat Till You Burst, we went for the premium, mainly for the nicer cuts such as toro and wagyu, and because uni!! Jumping in shortly after 5pm, we were promptly seated, marked a bunch of stuff on paper, and soon after submission, we got food brought to our table. It was a decent meal overall, so why 3 stars? Let's recap. Menu variety is fantastic, though of course we didn't get "one of everything", coz that's simply impossible. While the premium did cover a lot of grounds, it would have been nice if they also included anago (sea eel) which is currently only available on the a la cart menu, and maybe even offer couple lesser-known items such as monk fish liver app, sea grapes, off-the-beaten-path fish cuts, what have you. Would be happy even if we only get an allotment of those like we do with the uni. Now, service - great overall. Servers circulated around and were alert of customers' needs. Approached at appropriate times to take our order sheets, refill water, provide new order sheets, and ask if we wanted more food. So kudos on that. Their denotation of serving "regular portion" of cooked food had us hesitant in ordering, since we didn't want to be wasteful (or use our limited stomach space for dishes we can easily get elsewhere). But from other tables' orders as well as the one noodle dish that we ended up getting, it seems that the portion size was what I would like to see at AYCE places -- about 50-60% of regular Asian dish size, where 3-4 people can each have a couple bites "just to try". However, to think if that is what they call "regular portion", then it is definitely "Brookline pricing" on a la carte, which I would not recommend one to do such things on these items. Food is fantastic in general; we got a variety of stuff, and everything was really of top quality and taste. The meal would have been a "highly recommended" if they didn't serve the uni that we got. Out of the 12 pcs of uni sushi, all of them were... while not "foul" to a point where one cannot safely consume, they were definitely more sub-par than "ok but not great". Colors aside (which I understand there can be a range depending on origins and such), the uni was a "splat" of yellow stuff on rice, without distinct shape of the flesh. On top of the fishy smell (I'm talking about slightly ammonia-ish), the presentation and taste-texture upon them hitting our tongues... really left the ENTIRE room to be desired. In retrospect, we should have sent them back even if they weren't going to replace them. But instead, we stupidly forced ourselves to shove them all down in cowardly silence, then ordered another round of wagyu just to make us feel a little better about it. Yes, we weren't smart as customers. But if the restaurant is going to charge $100++ per person (after tax and tip), someone from the kitchen should have known better than pushing this thing out for customers to deal with. In their defense, yes, the uni itself was still "edible" in a sense that it didn't make us sick, but I'd maintain that better judgment should have been made. Once the shell was cracked open and you see this pale-gray yellow mush, it should have been decided that it is better repurposed, than be served straight to your customers as your star/featured product. As seen in other diners' experiences, it could just have been a one-off mishap, so I'm not knocking them entirely. But I do hope the restaurant would improve on their QC accordingly. It was such a disappointing low point in an otherwise wonderful meal.

Yet another Brookline restaurant I regret not trying sooner!…read more This past weekend I stopped in for a quick solo lunch around 1:30. I happened to be the only one in there, but could tell the staff was working on some online or takeout orders. I was nicely greeted and shown to a seat. After giving me water they took my order. I got the crab wontons, their take on crab rangoons, as well as three different rolls (yes my eyes are bigger than my stomach). I went with the eel avocado roll as well as the spicy tuna and yellowtail rolls. I was REALLY impressed by the quality of all the food. I was given the wontons first and they were perfectly crispy and filled. I dislike when the ratio of filling to wonton is too heavy on the filling side and things get messy. They were also SUPER hot which is a personal must. My only qualm is I would've loved a bit more sauce, there were a lot of wontons for that small dish of sweet chili sauce. In terms of the sushi I surprisingly loved the spicy yellowtail the best. Normally the other 2 are my favorite but I might've found a new go-to. The others were great as well, though. You could seriously tell the tuna was JUST cut from the fish (I watched the sushi chef do so!). Notably, the ratio on the eel-avocado roll was great as well as the amount of eel sauce. No need to pay for extra on the side! I will most definitely be ordering or dining in from here soon, this time bringing friends along!
