This is a go to for us in Brookline with great service, a variety of food and a casual environment. It feels like a local Izakaya that I have been to in Japan. You can get a variety of items from Yakitori (grilled meats on a skewer over a hibachi), Kushiyaki (the same with veggies), different types of sushi, tempura and classic hot dishes. You are quickly met at the door and seated and the restaurant. While it's a little bit dated, it is a pub and it is comfortable. The service is super attentive and always prompt. When you seated at the table, you immediately get water and a delicious cabbage salad gratis. You can get a picture of beer for $25 and a great selection of Sake and other cocktails. The food prices are very reasonable for the quality and value that you get. The food is always super tasty with the yakitori served hot. The sushi is fresh and delicious. My friend is a huge fan of Omori so we decided to go here for dinner on a summer Friday night. The weather was gorgeous so we decided to sit outside. This place has an outdoor patio seating area that overlooks Brookline Village. We ordered chicken katsu to start off and I ordered a bunch of different sushi rolls. I opted for Caterpillar Roll, Shrimp Tempura Roll, and Sweet Potato Roll. All were decent, though I've had better and fresher fish. The fish quality here isn't as high as many reviews claim it to be, it's not bad by any means but you can taste that it's not pristine. This was my most recent visit of many to Omori Izakaya! The food is consistently delicious and the fish very fresh. We split the salmon don, Alaska maki, and makimono combo. The Osaka roll wasn't what I was expecting it to be at all. The shrimp was bite sizes and to me personally from eating sushi all over the country isn't worth the money at all. Unbelievably overhyped and disappointing place with poor quality. I appreciate the nice service and convenient location, but the food was a huge miss : 1) chicken karage: the only dish that met my expectations of the night. Tender inside but some pieces have an over cooked and chewy /not crispy outside 2) beef tongue: so chewy and over cooked that my jaw was sore afterwards 3) chicken skin skewer: absurdly over fried flavorless and bitter chicken skin, ridiculous far from what I had at other Japanese restaurants; 4) sushi: bad, bad, bad!!!!! Uni was extremely fishy, fish was not fresh, sushi rice was not rice, and even the presentation was terrible - the fish was so unevenly placed as pictured I felt like a fool after spending almost a hundred bucks here for such poor food. Although I am pretty festive, this feels like a lazy move. Service was just alright and definitely could have been better. My family arrived at the restaurant before me and as soon as I came in the server asked if I wanted to place my order when I had barely looked at the menu. They were also kind of rushing us throughout our time there despite it not being busy. We ordered some apps and entree items and food was pretty good, nothing special. However, one thing did stand out, which was the miso eggplant. I don't even really like to order eggplant because most places don't make it right, but it was so good. Everything else, even including my unagi don, was just alright. They have really nice drink specials though with cocktails under $10. Service was friendly and quick, I was able to sit at the small bar and look over the menu before I ordered. I got the chicken katzu appetizer, spring rolls, small miso, and an Osaka sushi roll. Katzu and spring roles were freshly made, seemed pretty standard with the flavor so I think they get them pre-made but not sure. Osaka roll had a slightly off smell, not really fishy but almost fermented, so may have been the lobster roe or something. Shrimp tempura inside was fine, so overall a decent roll. Didn't eat the miso right away so that made for a nice snack the next day. Was standard miso with tofu squares, some seaweed and broth. Again a pretty standard flavor so I don't think it was made from scratch but still tasty. Folks were enjoying the outside deck as it was nice weather and there was a good amount of folks dining inside, along with steady traffic for to go. Order was ready within the 10 minutes they said, order was perfectly correct. There is a good ice cream place across the street so that is an open for dessert. They didn't have cranberry juice to go so went for a ginger ale which was $3 for a can, but the conveince store was closed. Been here twice now and both times it did not disappoint. We LOVE the value of their Chef Omakase for Two box set. Great quality cuts of sushi and sashimi and the sashimi comes in 4 pieces -- what an awesome deal at $68! I also love their Uni nigiri; it's so creamy and fresh. Hubby also orders the Kushiyaki Combo each time in addition to the Omakase and loves the variety there as well. The hotate kaiyaki, while tasty, was odd to us since their rendition is made with cheese but the tako wasabi and fried oysters tasted great as standard izakaya staples. Service is at lightning speed and we were able to find on-street parking easily both times. No wait times either and one visit was on a Friday evening, which is great. Came here on a Saturday evening for dinner and the place was decently busy, but there was plenty of space at the shared table space so we were seated there. My chair was right next to the door and it was a cold day though so it was a little uncomfortable honestly, but there wasn't too much foot traffic so it wasn't unbearable. I would probably recommend that they do a little better with spacing out everything and having it come in an order that makes more sense. The octopus dish was pretty tasty, albeit it definitely seemed like something they premake ages before as it was super strong in wasabi flavor. Nonetheless, I'd order this one again for sure. The sushi was all pretty good quality and no complaints there - I enjoyed the diversity in fish types for the combo meals. The soup that came with it was fine, nothing that stood out but it was solid. The takoyaki was honestly a little small for its price - I'd think it would come with more pieces or have bigger portions for each ball. The scallop was nice though and had a good mix of flavors, I enjoyed it a lot. Overall, I don't think I would come back for their izakaya dishes, but their sushi was okay.
