Sushi Man is the best sushi in the area by far!! They have the best tuna in town. Sushi Man and Woman are so nice and the service is great!

When in the Newton / chestnut hill... just go stop into sushi man. Owned by a sweet couple, service is always good. Small authentic vibes. Food is made with care. We'll always eventually get a fix and work our way back out here for some sushi, beef katsu, squid skewers and salmon bowls. Agedashi tofu was also good! It's just not good. We went to the old location when it was right on RT 9 and thought it was pretty bad but at the new location we thought with 3.9 stars on yelp we would give it a try. I think we threw half of it away. The maki rolls were a mess. Sloppy and poorly rolled. The fish did not seem fresh... or tasty. Altogether it was just a disappointing take-away experience. Eating at Sushi Man is always a great experience! We like to order new dishes to try with each visit, while ordering our usual favorites. This visit, I decided to try their udon for the first time, and it was HUGE. It honestly could feed two people with the amount of udon noodles and protein. It came with clams, mussels, shrimp tempura, spinach, corn, an entire salmon filet, & tuna. I would definitely get this again, loved the broth and the noodles were bouncy & had a nice chew. It was also our first time ordering the sashimi salad and we felt like this was such a good deal! For $20, you get an assortment of different sashimi and has more sashimi than actual salad. We ordered the beef curry and it was amazing, as always! Came with fried gyoza this time, instead of fried shu mai. LOVE the croquette, it's seriously so good. Overall, I highly recommend Sushi Man if you're looking for an authentic Japanese Sushi spot. They are owned by a Japanese + Taiwanese couple, with the chef being Japanese! We ended our weekend visiting Boston with a visit to the world famous Sushi Man. Our meal began with tasty delicious life-changing Fried Squid Skewers and was followed by an order of Takoyaki. Each of these delicacies was packed with flavor and caused us to daydream about our next return visit. Overall had a good meal with great service. I went on a Saturday for dinner with a party of six. It was a bit busy inside, but our server was extremely kind despite all of the tables. I ordered the chicken udon and the chicken tempura roll. The presentation of the udon was great. The noodles were soft and felt fresh. I would say the chicken seemed like chicken tempura, but was in the soup so the usually crunchy outside was instead soft. The corn and other vegetables were great. The chicken tempura roll was good. It had a lot of chicken and minimal avocado, which worked, however, I would have liked if the chicken was cut into smaller pieces. It often seemed like the chicken was in large blocks. Really pleasant and quality neighborhood spot for the price. Ambience/Atmosphere: Nice change with new-ish spot near old demolished one. Easier to get to and park without being on the busy I-9. A little dark on the inside, lots of decorations and fan fare, it's not bare bones like some other competitors. Our kids loved the decor "I want to live here!" Service: Very attentive and flexible. They forgot one dish, which was fine, because we ordered too much, and were profusely apologetic and of course didn't charge us for it but also brought us out a nice little treat. Food came out quick on a weekend at peak time for lunch. Food: Pretty high quality fish. I've learned enough from content experts that you don't always want fresh, but you want fish well kept to age a tad for umami. A lot of the sushi has that here. The portions are very generous. Some interesting maki though definitely has all the common rolls, too, so something for everyone. The portions for things like philadelphia rolls were way above peers. The pokemon roll was fun and did visually look like pikachu. Chicken teriyaki platter was full of nice food. The edamame was generous but cold -- fine but should have been labeled as such. Miso soup was large and flavorful. The specials are always fun. Price: Really great for the portions and for sushi compared to neighboorhood/Newton/Brookline peers. Phenomenal. No notes. A true gem. Beef terrayaki is full of flavor, huge portion of beef which is cooked beautifully also comes with some dumplings, a croquette and veggies. The shrimp skewers is a flavor bomb, I'd get ten. Gyoza steamed was packed with filling and delicious. I suspect they are made in house. So good. Chicken udon soup comes in a massive bowl. It was sad to see the original Sushi Man place being torn down ,but happy to see them back in business (apparently for 2 years now!!). The ambiance is cozy, with around 7 tables and bar seatings. Very warm and welcoming. We ordered sushi sashimi lunch set, Gyudon and chirashi. Food has good flavor. The beef on Gyudon was slightly on the salty side but that's my personal preference. The owners were very friendly and service was great. I'd say the chirashi was on the pricey side, even as a dinner dish. read more

Not my first choice, more like my 20th. It's ok in a pinch but not really great. Gyoza tasted like the frozen ones from Wegmans. I swear they're the same ones. There's no sauce included either for them. I think you have to pay extra for ginger and Wasabi. Feel like that's included at most places where the sushi is cheaper. I don't mind paying for quality, but the reviews are right... the rolls fall apart. And the portion of rice is tiny under each piece of fish. It's just like no care is taken to prepare the food. It's rough cut fish slapped on a dab of rice. It's like when I tried to make sushi at home myself. My salmon Avocado roll didn't have any Avocado. Oh well. The staff is super nice. Really fresh and quality sushi in the Newton area. Closer to a 4.3/5. The unagi don was amazing. Very tender and nice texture and acidity from the red pickles. The gyoza was hot and delicious. My only critique was that there was a little too much sauce and I wish the boiled egg wasn't cold, but other than that spectacular. I also got the salmon skin roll which was crunchy, savory, and balanced with veggies. One of the best salmon skin rolls I've gotten. The salmon sake sashimi was cut thick and nice; really fresh although I've had better in Boston. Service was a little lackluster honestly. Took a while to order and the waiter didn't say a word to me. I believe the chef and his wife were bickering about some orders as well. Seem a little drained and annoyed. Cute, cozy ambiance. They changed the big bottle from $35 to $60 to $120 and explained that the price of sake is high due to the fact that it was imported from Japan directly. They treated us like we've never ordered drinks from restaurants and we've never had Sake before. During the entire meal, there was no conversation about the extremely high pricing until we see the bill. Otherwise, we would not order the 2nd and 3rd bottles. The owner keeps playing victim online and keeps deleting and reporting our reviews to hide the truth. So sad, disappointed, and even disgusted to see how the owner treated her customer and handled it this way! See my photos. I don't know if it's the texture of the rice or the way they assemble the roll, but almost every roll falls apart when eating (especially when dipped in soy sauce). Wow. Now I know. The reviews were so mixed that I decided to take my chances. After about an hour of waiting (I live .2 miles away), I called the restaurant and they said that the order had been picked up an hour ago and to call GrubHub. GrubHub verified my address and said that it had been delivered. I looked outside my door... nope. Mins you, the Yelp app was still saying, "your order is running a little late." I live in a multi-unit house and chose contactless delivery so I knew it could be tricky BUT I wrote additional clear directions to TEXT when the food was here. GrubHub cancelled my order and gave me an additional $15 credit so that was cool because I would have been UPset if I had actually paid for this stuff! For sh**s and giggles, I walk around to the front of the house where I asked for it NOT to be delivered, and there it was, just sitting there...all cold and lonely. Fortunately the $10 Spider Roll was decent, even with the mushy, overcooked rice but the chicken teriyaki?!?!?! BRUH! I was starving and couldn't choke it down. The chicken was as as dry (or drier) than the Sahara Desert and far from fresh. The rice was super overcooked and I think the container weighed 10 lbs from the heavy, soggy rice. There was hardly any teriyaki sauce to boot. Yikes. You live you learn. LoL read more

I have been to their old spot many times. This is my first visit since they moved. The restaurant definitely look newer, but I do really like their old setup. This new place just makes them look like every other restaurant. Food wise it's pretty much the same. Agedashi tofu and the spinach in their special sauce are really good starters. Tempura has a little bit too much oil and batter, but acceptable. In almost all the nigiri we ordered every thing has loads of wasabi in them (too much!) Snapper is really good, tuna and scallops are just okay. Their beef tongue is one of their best. Purple sweet potato fries is pretty good, much thinner batter than the tempura plate. read more

Sushi Man is a monthly staple for my friends and I. It is a family owned restaurant with very limited seating, and is arguably the only authentic Japanese restaurant in the area. You get great quality food with ample serving sizes at reasonable prices. I always start with the Octopus Tempura and then have either the Gyudon (Beef bowl off menu) or Katsu Curry for my main, both of which are amazing. The sushi selection is also quite fresh. My friends always order the Uni and Salmon sashimi. I recently tried the beef tongue over rice which was so so tender and extremely flavorful. We then finish the meal with fried ice cream.
