Got takeout from Hoshi Ya. They have a nice cash deal where you can order any two rolls from their select list for $12 with a side of miso soup. We ordered a spicy salmon maki and a crazy maki. The spicy salmon had thick salmon pieces, tempura crumbs, and spicy mayo rolled in rice. The crazy maki had shrimp tempura, avocado, rolled in rice, and a layer of seaweed. Overall, both rolls were tasty and pretty much a steal at under $6 each. The only thing that was slightly annoying was that the salmon pieces were so thick, it made it hard to take a bite from it, you had to eat them whole (I have no idea if I explained this well, haha). It's a no frills joint, they were quick with the order. Seemed to only have a online order service, because I had a hard time finding a phone number. They also deliver, and it's a small charge based on the radius. For a simple sushi night, I'd definitely go back here. read more

Love the sashimi here but the maki is okay. I saw that the reviews for Hoshi Ya are pretty positive so I decided to try them out. Like others have mentioned, delivery takes about an hour, but I was prepared to wait so it was not too bad. I ordered the sashimi combo entree ($26.95), negi-hama maki ($5.50), volcano maki ($6.95), and the torched white tuna maki ($11.95). The sashimi combo entree came with one of those small cardboard takeout boxes full of rice. It also came with a pretty big container of miso soup. The miso soup was underseasoned. There were 5 different cuts of fish with 3 pieces each, and all of the fish was super fresh and buttery. The pieces of fish were of a reasonable size. I'd probably skip the combo next time and just order the sashimi separately, since the rice and miso soup were pretty underwhelming. I wasn't particularly blown away by the maki. The negi-hama maki was alright, the fish was fresh but the rice wasn't super flavorful. The other two rolls I ordered were drenched in sauce so it was difficult to taste the flavor of the fish. The rolls were thin so the portion of fish was small to begin with. At the same time, the maki was priced very reasonably so this would be a good budget-friendly sushi place. There are so many options for sushi in the Boston area that I can't see myself ordering from here again. However, the fish here is fresh and everything is fairly priced so this is a great place to get sushi and save a little money! read more

I was craving sushi so I decided to give this spot a try. It was good and they're open late as well. I'm not sure of the promotion, but I think if you order 3 rolls, you get a choice of edamame or seaweed salad. I chose seaweed salad. I ordered California maki, spider maki, and the hoshi ya maki. Extremely disappointing service, quality and taste. My first time trying a local sushi place and even brought my friends. The cashier was pretty rude and demanding simply when we wanted to pay separately... but that's not the worst of it. The tempura was hard and rubbery and even after calling the woman on the phone argued with me that the fried fish I got was soft shell crab... even though I know the texture and look of soft shell crab and it was absolutely fish. The sushi as well didn't have much flavor. The beef wagyu was decent but doesn't match the price they charge. Extremely disappointing experience and for a small business it's disheartening when you try to give an opportunity to correct the mistake and they'd rather be petty and argue than maintain a loyal customer. So happy I found my new favorite sushi place. I go to school nearby, but live North of Boston, so I've tried a few places. When I tell you....I never order spicy tuna because sometimes the texture is off and it can taste like you're eating a spoonful of mayo...well, not anymore!!! Now- from my previous reviews, you'll see that when I usually make this choice, to try something new, I'm terribly disappointed and wish I had just gone with my old standby. Not with this place. My one issue I had with Hoshi Ya, was that they do not have brown rice, which I found out after I ordered, so keep that in mind. The food however was pretty good, and I found myself to be full but not miserable after eating 2 rolls and an appetizer (with white rice) Our delivery arrived in reasonable time, and everyone was super friendly, and easy to communicate with (as soon as I placed my order on GH, a woman called and explained about the brown rice situation). The sushi was well prepared, and seemed to be pretty high quality ingredients. I don't know. Everything was good, and it was a good bang for our buck, but nothing really wow'ed me. My favorite sushi spot in Oak Square. It's nothing crazy special tbh but it always just simply fresh and good. Best reliable, affordable sushi place. I like how they keep the salmon in a big piece in their spicy salmon rolls. And their rice is flavorful and just right. The black capillary is also a good specialty roll. They do cash deals. The best thing about Hoshi Ya is the cash-deal delivery service where you can order as late as midnight! Comes with 1 bowl of miso soup per order. Sushi is fairly decent, overall becomes slightly pricy after you pay the fee and tip the driver, but hey, the price for receiving good sushi delivered to one's door at midnight is suitably high. Won't lie, if I didn't live literally right across the street from this place I would not go in solely based on looks but I am totally glad that I did. The place is tiny and there are about 10 seats inside to dine in but who cares the sushi is so good and cheap I scarf it down by the time I walk back to my apartment. This place is just about the only sushi place I have ever gone to that gets the tempura/maki proportions PERFECT. That's a huge deal. The Shrimp Tempura roll is great and I like the Crazy Maki roll which is the pretty much the same thing as the shrimp tempura roll but throw in some avocado and spicy mayo in the mix. A great variety to choose from, the guys that were there are nice and the prices are pretty damn good for Boston. If I could eat here 7 days a week I would, but I can't. Delivery driver harassed me for a tip, beeped at me from his car, called me several times after delivery was made, and texted me accusing me of not tipping. They did not mark the delivery as complete so that they could continue to text and call me for over a half hour following delivery. I called the restaurant to complain and they accused me of lying about leaving a tip and defended the driver's behavior. I ultimately called Grubhub and reported the whole thing, received a refund, and submitted proof of the driver's terrible behavior. I will never order from this place again because they think it is defendable to harass customers when they incorrectly decide they have not been tipped. The irony is the information is clearly visible on the receipt AND I have the texts from the driver, so I can be easily and fully vindicated if they had bothered to just double check before deciding to park outside my house beeping at me and repeatedly calling and texting. What lovely people who work here! Ordered take-out tonight, paid in cash, and left a good tip (as I try to do when I can). The man taking my order was very smiley and kind and my food was ready in less than 10 minutes. When I got home I saw he had put a free edamame in there for me, as well. I've always liked this restaurant until recently. Usually their delivery comes to the right address and on time. Sushi is good. I like their agedashi tofu and avocado/crab salad. On Friday I ordered delivery again. In the special instructions field, I specifically wrote in Foodler that my address sounds very similar to another address but they are two very different streets... The delivery guy went to the wrong address and then he called me and yelled at me saying that I gave him the wrong address. :-/ when he finally got it right, I nicely showed him on my phone that I had written out not to confuse my address with the other one and he waved me off as if I were annoying him.
