We used Genoa to cater our Christmas Eve celebration this year. I stopped in about 2 weeks before the date and they were so friendly and accommodating. I ordered 1/2 trays of everything for our group of 13 and we had more than enough food. Our dishes were Penne with Vodka Sauce, Meatballs with Marinara along with more penne in sauce, Chicken Marsala and Antipasto. The Chicken was absolutely delicious with lots of mushrooms and flavorful sauce. The meatballs were enormous and more importantly tasty. The only dish I wasn't entirely pleased with was the antipasto. I was envisioning whole chunks of cheese, olives, peppers and rolled cold cuts. Instead it was finely chopped cold cuts and American cheese on a bed of oily greens with a few pickled vegetables. Alas, I don't have any pictures! As far as good subs go, these guys seem to know what they're doing. The Italian mix sub was effortlessly tasty although it costs about $4 more than my favourite Italian sub in the region and also not as big. The shop was bustling and they had a good constant for traffic mostly ordering subs (hot and cold). The takeaway stuff (pictured) looked increasing so I might try some next time. I hear a lot of good things about Genoa so when I had a mean craving for an Italian submarine sandwich, I gave them a try. Ordering process was easy and correct when I got them home. We both got the Italian mix subs, slightly different so it could be easy to mess up I suppose. The subs were good, just not as good as I find my go-to sub place to be. The roll was lacking a nice crust, it was dry and didn't have the chew I usually like on a sub like this. The bread almost seemed stale. The meat and cheese were great quality, which definitely made the sandwich. The dressings were lacking some flavor. Besides the bread, the subs were good. No big complaints, just not as good as other places I've had. The prices seemed on par for the subs and such, but were way too high for the side salads. It was $10 for a small thing of pasta salad which was pretty surprising to me, so I just grabbed a bag of chips. Overall, not bad. read more

While few remain of the old familiar faces, the new staff maintains the courtesy an attentiveness that has been the Genoa hallmark. Their soups still elicit a memory of Mom's kitchen. Genoa recognizes that some households consist of one or two persons and accommodates their needs with tasty prepared meals that would prove impossible to prepare at home for a single or dual serving. For a while they were for sale, and then they were sold. The new owner has changed the interior of the store a bit (it doesn't resemble an Italian specialty supermarket on the left side anymore) and some of the things in the coolers and cases are gone. No more Tartufo! That being said, their subs are still good. I miss the wall of hats where it seemed like a dozen employees kept their hats when they weren't on the shift. Such a gem hidden inconspicuously on the side of a road, Genoa Importing was a find! Really good sandwiches made to order (cold cuts, warm, whatever you want!) and lots of authentic items you won't find elsewhere. Think a convenience shop focused on Italian goodies - I saw raw honeycombs, what looked like fresh cannolis, and lots of olive oil. I definitely plan on coming back to try more options, but the sandwich I had was DELICIOUS. Their cookie selection and pasta sauces also caught my eye. Don't live in the area, west coast, Portland Oregon. First thing I have to say is that we don't have the quality of the subs compared to the east coast. First is the bread, crispy on the outside, soft in the middle. Second is the quality of the products that makes up the sandwich. Very authentic Italian Deli with many products from Italy. They process their own meats and bread is baked daily. They have many authentic menus items, but I can only comment on the subs. It tasted ok.. nothing special. cookie was $3.50 - no price sign small bag of chips $2.49 - no price sign do the math yourself on where they are making their money. when the guy rang me up, i asked him how it could be $17.86? so he charged my card and then showed me the receipt after the fact. I should have demanded he take the cookie and chips off the order.. then the owner is all like "buddy" and "pal" with me.. i would say ask what everything costs before you take to the register or you will be overcharged. read more

Hands down the best Italian deli this side of the Mason-Dixon Line. I've been going here as long as I can remember. Thy have an unrivaled signature sub menu along with awesome signature focaccia paninis, homemade pizza and Italian dishes. One of my favorites is the A-Rod or the spring special. The pasta fagioli is always on point. But the icing on the cake at Genoa's is most definitely the homemade crumb cake. No like it's like 80:20 crumb to cake ratio. It's ambrosia. read more

I've been to Genoa a number of times. They make some AMAZING subs. They do subs the way you'd expect to have a sub... Great tasting bread, and not light handed on the meat and toppings. They also have a very extensive selection of specialty subs which are incredible. (My favorite is the "Terrible Todd" but minus the cole slaw) My only gripe with this place is honestly they could make it crazy better if they redid their entire store... hear me out... The building is ancient and feels like its slowly falling apart.. its so jam packed crowded with shelves and soda coolers you can barely navigate two people next to each other through most of this tiny spot, and it is just flat out a crappy layout. If they dumped some money into getting rid of all that extra clutter and even made a nice sit down area where people could sit and eat lunch there... I'm sure they could be doing crazy more business. All in all, they are some great people who get your attention right away while there to take your order and help you out. I only give it 2 stars because they use boars head meats and nostalgia! He has changed so much about this place that really the only thing that is the same is the name. Staff that had been there forever are gone. Staple menu items gone. The vibe of the store is now so blah no personality. The hours suck - used to stop on my way home from work but now they close at 5. My favorite sandwich the one Bob made for my rehearsal dinner catering is no longer. The only place to go for subs in the capital district. They cost about $9 but they are so big you need 2 people to eat them. Many different specialty subs. They use boarshead meats and also have alot of homemade dishes. I used to really like the macaroni salad years ago but now its kinda hit or miss. Genoa is a little gem that a lot of locals know, but not enough people go to! The store has two parts to it - the packaged foods and the food made to order. The packaged foods include many Italian staples - olive oils, dried pasta, tomato sauce (very good), as well as frozen ravioli and assorted drinks. If you have never had Orangina, this is something for you to try. The food made to order is what keeps most of us coming back as regulars. They make all sorts of subs that have some great names, using the meats and cheeses that they also sell. Also, they have a selection of breads, like ciabatta that you can buy to take with you. My favorite is the tortellini salad. I have been trying for quite some time, and still cannot make the recipe as good as theirs. Also, the giardiniera! Cauliflower, red peppers, banana peppers, carrots, celery and more goodness. The only drawback I have found is that the store is small and always there are people, but the service is great and friendly and the food can't be beat. read more

Best subs in the Capital District bar none! Pretty much anything you can want, and then some, for $7.99 and it is huge. Nothing like that foot-long junk you get at a chain. Real bread, real meat, real service. My boys love the Little Piggy, which they first ordered based on the name, but go back for the ham, cheese, melted concoction that is great. I have tried a few and have not been disappointed. Only down point is it is REALLY crowded and small. It is difficult to navigate which makes us want to get in and get out. The bread is good, the quality is consistent, and the bread to filling ratio on the sandwiches/subs is pretty even. Everyone is friendly and knowledgeable. Don't hesitate to ask questions about anything - can I sub something? Is there another meat/cheese that would go well with this? The olive bar is delicious and all the deli meats are to die for - especially the roast beef. If you need a big order, call ahead as it's a small shop that does high volume. We went here after work and it was fairly busy. There isn't great access to the register. The shop has a wide selection of specialty items. There is a wide selection of pasta sauces, olive oil and pasta. I ordered the meatball sub and my boyfriend went with the Dangerous Dom. Both subs were fantastic. They cost $9, but are huge and really make for two meals. I like my meatball sub a little spicy, so next time I'm going to add spicy peppers or go with the sausage and meatball sub. We bought homemade marinara sauce ($6) and 12 sundried tomato ravioli ($9) to cook at home. Sauce was chunky and had an excellent flavor. The ravioli were very good, but really rich. We split them across two people, but they might be more enjoyable in a smaller portion size because they were so flavorful. This place has unbelievably delicious subs. They are a very (VERY) small deli near Sienna that sells mostly subs and a small selection of groceries. They will make anything you want and they make it huge - the sandwiches are about the size of a leg. They use top quality meats and cheeses, and give you a nice thick fresh bread with a crispy outside. Usually other places have cheap cold cuts and pre-made spongy newspaper bread which allows them to charge only $5-6 for a footlong. This is nothing like that. It will usually cost about $10-15 for lunch and you an usually get 2 solid meals out of it. It is worth every penny. You cannot get a sub this good anywhere else in the Capital Region, at least that I'm not aware of. If you're in the neighborhood stop and try it, you won't regret it. I think the bread they use is a little heavy for cold subs but perfect for hot subs with sauces. I was nervous, I won't lie. When you want something certain it's not always the best idea to give a new place a shot. But the reviews looked good, so we threw caution to the wind and went for it. Flavorful, fresh ingredients and a delicious chewy roll...and the sub was seriously big enough to split (trust me on this, cause Casey doesn't share food).
