If I weren't so spoiled by Cardona's, I think I'd like this Italian deli and specialty goods store much more. Not a bad selection of deli meats, olive oils, pastas and frozen goods, and the prices are about average for these types of products. If I were near Loudonville, I'd stop here for a few things. How I have lived in Albany almost 3 years without knowing about this place I don't know, but I am going to spend the next couple of years making up for lost time. This is a small mom and pop deli/grocery that represents everything I love about local businesses. It has everything you could ever want, frozen ravioli of every flavor, Ben and Jerry's, every kind of Boar's head deli meat you could want, canned/bottled sandwich toppings, Italian pasta dishes, soup, the list goes on. On my first visit here we ordered the turkinator which was heavenly turkey, mayo, bacon, lettuce, tomato and jalapeños (heated up) on a huge sub large enough to feed at least two people. Because it was a cold fall day I also sprung for the chicken noodle soup which might as well been made by my mom because it tasted homemade with chunks of chicken and real pasta. Major WINNER. I am sitting here starting to get hungry for lunch and I have decided that I deserve something special - I am off to Genoa's!!! Cause I deserve it!!! Seriously, if you want a fantastic sub with the highest quality meats (Boars Head) and great cheese then this is the spot for you. The grocery/packaged goods part of the store is a treat especially when preparing for an Italian dinner but it's the sandwich counter that "speaks to me" and keeps me coming back. A little know secret - they make a great pizza too - and other hot meals to go. For the most part its pretty good. They have an invented sub menu with all types of selections. I would actually recommend looking at the menu before you go in to get a better grasp of what they have There salads are also good as is there hot meals. Guys are also helpful and the place has a old scholl feel to it If you order a sub though I highly recommend doubling the meat because they are a lil light on that and the bread is so big it overwhelms the sub. They say you are what you eat. So I was really hangry and grumpy today and decided it would be appropriate to purchase a sandwich called "the jerk". When I ordered it, the guy behind the counter suggested that I replace the Italian bread with ciabatta. What a great suggestion! The sandwich was amazing and very filling! Made with just the right amount of meats and condiments. My mood has drastically increased. My stomach thanks you and so do my unfortunate workmates who are relieved to see me in a better mood. Went here with some friends, seven of us. 24 hours later, all of us started getting extremely sick. One kid at 10pm, one at midnight, one at 2am, e.t.c. Long story short, all of us acquired severe food poisoning from a place I used to love. Paid $25 for my girlfriend and I so Genoa could ruin our night as we stayed up vomiting all night and we were not able to sleep. Wasn't able to leave the bed the next day. This was a great find to pick up a huge fantastic tasting grinder along with some tortellini salad. I could eat a pound of the stuff it was so good!!! Its a cramped little store with towering shelves of Italian products everywhere u turn. It has an odd smell to it I thought, but it was just something they were making I'm sure. Genoa Imports over everything. I won't go to Bella Napoli ever again. I usually get turkey, fresh mozz, lettuce, and mayo large sub. It's huge and I can get two meals out of it. The bread is great and always fresh. I like the cookies and other items they receive from other bakeries. So as a grocery / imports store this is no match for some others in the area. It's small and a little cramped with a limited, but very good selection of olive oils, balsamic and assorted pastas and canned goods. So why do I keep going miles out of my way again and again? The subs! The glorious wonderful subs! At first glance the menu is overwhelming - they've got like 50 choices kind of spread out on various boards, but if you look the least little bit confused (like I do even though I go often!), the kind and wonderfully helpful staff will offer you a printed version. My favorite is the "Smokey Bob" - smoked turkey, butterkase cheese, bacon, tomatoes and honey mustard! OMG! Nothing short of amazing. And don't EVER get it on anything but the chiabatta - WOW! I was originally slightly put off by the $7.99 price tag - but seriously, it's 2 meals and a snack for me. Warmed up in the toaster oven, the bread stays crunchy on the outside, moist and incredible inside. My husband adores the "Alex" which is roast beef (cooked on premises), pepperjack, tomatoes, lettuce and horesradish mayo. The warm lettuce takes some getting used to, but now I actually enjoy the crunch. Their offerings include both the usual and unusual - brie, artichoke hearts, roasted pork loin, meunster, goat cheese... on subs!!! Awesome. They also have a variety of deli salads and of course, meat by the pound. I've heard that the dinners to go are terrific, but I'm too enchanted to ever stray from the subs. We go to Genoa for lunch probably at least once a week, sometimes twice since my office is about 10 minutes away. This is a take-out only place. I have had many of their specialty subs and have enjoyed every single one. My favorites are the 'Turkenator' & the 'Jerk'. But they're all good. They use Boar's Head deli. You'll pay 9 - 10 bucks for one of their specialty subs, but I usually get 2 lunches out of it. They are a full Italian deli and have many salads & dry goods also. I highly recommend the Mardi Gras! It's a delicious sandwich made with incredibly fresh ingredients. Genoa's merchandise, which in some cases could be considered gourmet, is somewhat pricy and I tend to avoid purchasing soda or chips and just stick to the sandwiches. They have almost amazing 50 speciality subs to try (my favorite is the Spring Special on ciabatta), but they will make whatever you want in any way you want it. They fit a lot into a small area, but squeezing through the aisles is part of the charm. Most importantly though, Geona offers the best customer service of any business in the area. After rave reviews, I finally tried Genoa. I ordered the Lindsay (Italian mix sub). What little meat and cheese was in the sandwich was absolutely delicious, but overall, it was 90% bread. I rate the sub as nothing short of pathetic. I was beyond disappointed. Days later I still feel angry. That wasn't a sandwich, it was an insult. I feel robbed. $10 for a loaf of bread and a pittance of meat. They even managed to skimp on the lettuce. If you really like bread, Genoa Importing is 5 stars. If you like there to be something between the bread, go elsewhere. read more
