The worst haircut I've had in a long time. (Which is why I tried this place - I was getting bad haircuts elsewhere). Well, this is worse than worse. Totally amateurish. When I pointed out a mistake he said just don't touch it in that direction. He didn't even try to fix it (which I did later at home). Idiot!! Nice guy actually, but very untalented as a barber. Always avoid the last chair- the least experienced one gets that chair. I will never go back! At $60 you expect excellence. Went to Geno's for years. Franco, (now retired) was my barber back when he was at 'Mr. Joseph's' many years ago and when he worked at Geno's. After he retired I had my hair cut by Geno who is terrific. Geno hasn't been back for at least 6 months and no one seems to know when and if he's coming back. I saw Alex (I think) a few months back and he was good but haven't seen him around. Seems to be more turnover and no 'manager'. read more

I was looking for a simple but solid place to get a good haircut where the guys cutting hair could follow direction but also use their own skill and creativity to create a neat and current cut. Geno's is that place. I like it there. No bs. Friendly stylists. Friendly clientele. Current but not in your face hipster. Overall just a really good place to get your hair cut. I was just there and already look forward to going back and telling them to push the envelope a bit because they do tend to err on the conservative side--definitely the right way to err, IMO. Value and experience are great. Geno is no longer at Mr. Joseph's (the opened up his own business on 6/14/10 just up the street). I have been going to Geno for since 2004, and every time he: says thank you for coming, always tries to accommodate scheduling issues, and most importantly does a great job. He works Mon-Sat 9-7, and although takes walk-ins, he is usually booked. Calling 3 days in advance is usually enough. As a 20 year old, I only recall my mother giving me haircuts or going to cheap barber shops to get an average looking cut. Geno's is the real deal; all the barbers are highly skilled and the service is great. Make sure to make an appointment ahead of time - the first time I walked in without knowing this, but Geno himself was kind enough to fit me in his schedule without even charging me the extra $10 of having him cut my hair. I've also been fortunate to have Yuri cut my hair once, and it turned out great as well. The cost ($40 + tip) might be pricier than your average Chinatown haircut, but the quality is undeniably worth it. read more

Let me just preface this with I've never had a consistent babee my entire life. I'm one of those guys that tries everywhere in multiple neighborhoods, cities and countries. At this point I've come to realize, as Ricci likes to say New York has the best barbers. No argument there! While this place is definitely on the pricey side, I came here for the 1st time this past week and had a very positive experience. For a while now, I have been looking for a new barber shop but cannot seem to find one I really like. I find the so many barber shops in the city are overcrowded and overpriced, and I am made to feel like I am inconveniencing the barber by being there. Geno's Barberia offered a very different experience. As soon as I walked in, I quickly appreciated the classic, old school feel of the place. The barbers knew their customers by name, and unlike so many other barber shops I have been to in the city, this place felt very warm, friendly and calm. This place takes appointments, which is such a great perk, but I did not know that, so I waited about a 1/2 hour. Ricci was the barber I was eventually assigned and he was excellent. He was very attentive to the style I asked for and showed tremendous precision when giving me the haircut. He was also really friendly. I was in NYC on vacation and I'd neglected to tidy up my beard and my hair was still hanging on in the post-COVID arena. I was walking down to Washington Square Park, saw Geno's, and thought I'd see if they could squeeze me in for cleaning up. Ricci took me right after the customer who was in the seat when I arrived and gave me an amazing cut and beard cleanup. I've long been a barbershop guy - had the same great barber in D.C. for 12 years - and Ricci was simply outstanding. Top marks all around and I'll be back with an appointment the next time in town. I came the first time to Geno's after seeing a potential apartment that just went all wrong that I had to dash out of indefinitely. After going to Checkers in Harlem to eat my feelings, I noticed my hair was looking not so fresh after six weeks of neglecting it. When I arrived at Geno's, I had a blond moment and pulled when the door said to push. I struggled for a whole minute and Geno himself opened the door for me which was nice. I asked if they took walk ins and with an enthusiastic "yes" I was welcomed in. Ricci cuts my hair on a regular basis. He's such a nice guy and is easy to converse with and interprets exactly what I want in every consultation. My hair tends to be very thick and coarse. Ricci cuts it like it was no problem at all. He really is my go-to barber in the shop. I also go to Geno if Ricci isn't available. Both are incredible barbers. I definitely have found my place and will come here regardless of what borough or neighborhood I live and I recommend Geno's to any guy in need of a solid cut because everyone I see walks out looking amazing. read more

Mixed experiences: Geno is awesome--I walked in on a Saturday and he pushed his lunch to take me, without an appointment. We got to talking about his shop, which is beautiful. He designed everything himself, from the alternating stained-reclaimed wood to the vintage straight edge razors, to the 1920's vintage "National Cash Register" in the window. My last barber would put a small line in my hair to make it easier to make it every morning. We're talking less than a centimeter thick. I told Geno this--and he said sure, but normally they don't do it. He made it small, and said he could always go wider. It looked great the first time he did it, and I walked out with an awesome haircut. Forward to yesterday. Geno doesn't work on Sundays--definitely respect that lifestyle. However, I realized last minute that Sunday would be the only opportunity to get a haircut for a while. I called ahead and made an appointment for anyone, assuming Geno picks great barbers like himself. The other barber (who will not be named) seemed like he was in a hurry with small actions, such as calling up the next customer while the previous customer was counting his cash (cash only!). Although it is NYC, it takes 60 seconds to wait for someone to get money out of their wallet, and doesn't send the signal that the barbershop is an assembly line. At least for me, getting a haircut is a time I can relax in the city. In addition, it felt like he was rushing through my haircut, except for when he checked his phone periodically and texted back (seriously). When I sat down, he asked how I want it--short on the sides and similar length on top. He didn't ask for specifics and I let him do his thing. However, when I mentioned the line in my hair, he asked who did it before (Geno). After he started cutting, I asked him about it. He mentioned truly-skilled barbers don't like doing this, as it implies the barber can't find the natural part in your hair. LIke I said, unfortunately, he didn't tell me until after he was going at it. Communication is key with a barber, and this one wasn't very good at it. Anyways, hair can always be cut, but it takes a while to grow back. Maybe he was rushing, maybe I wasn't clear how thin I wanted the line--but as a seasoned barber, I assumed he'd make a very thin one and ask if I want it wider. He cut a part in my hair so wide, you could probably drive a taxi on it. So wide that de Blasio called to ask me to stand at LGA since it's short on runways. Realistically, it was about 1/3 of an inch wide at the front. To add insult to injury, another barber sweeping said, "That's quite the scar." If it wasn't my head, I would have laughed out loud, but I knew this meant 3 weeks of people starting at the newly-paved 13th avenue on my head. And I really think it was because this guy was rushing. Anyways, I said my hair looked fine (because what could he do?). I tipped regularly since I may have been in error and communicated poorly, but I really think it's because this guy was rushing and bad at communicating. Geno took 35 minutes to do my hair, I think this guy took 20. The decor is awesome, but I can only honestly recommend Geno. Geno--you're awesome, but you have to get your barbers in check. read more

There are certain people in your life - certain professionals - to whom you will always have unending loyalty once you are pleased with their services and have trust in them. While you may flip-flop between grocers, dry-cleaners, and restaurants, you always rely on these people. For the true professional man, it always includes your lawyer, your tailor, and your barber. I have been visiting Geno since 2007, when he was at Mr. Joseph's down the street. At that time, and after complaining of some disastrous haircuts in and around the city, a gentleman I knew recommended that I visit Geno. From my first haircut, I knew that this was the type of person who I would trust with my hair going forward. Friendly, attentive, and respectful, Geno consistently demonstrates a perception of when to converse, when to listen, and when to just cut hair. His barber shop is a pleasant mix of classic style (vintage barber chairs) and modernity (exposed brick, flat screen). Comfortable, clean and pleasant, it is all you can ask for from a barber shop. As many have already mentioned (and as intimated from my discussion above) Geno's is a master of his trade and I have never once been dissatisfied or disappointed with any haircut from him. I strongly encourage anyone looking for a new, reasonably priced barber to visit Geno (or Franco, who is very well known locally) at Geno's Barberia. You should however, call ahead, because haircuts from these gentlemen are growing more and more popular. read more

I get my hair cut here by Yuri this past week and I don't think I've had a better haircut in my life. He was easy to talk to and asked a few questions and knew exactly what I wanted. I have been going to Geno's Barberia for a long time. NJ has been absolutely amazing. He is one of the few guys I have ever met that understand my hair or any hair for that matter. What I love so much is that the hair just grow out amazingly. I used to get my hair cut at Astor place and I would need to go every 2 weeks for $20 a pop. With this place, I could even last 3-4 weeks. It's a great space. Very nice and cozy. NOTE : NJ is no longer working here. In fact, he opened his own shop just around the corner at 103 West 10th street. This is one of the best barber shops I have been to. I live in SF and was visiting NYC when I thought to get a haircut. I walked in, Geno himself greeted me and while I did not have an appointment, he asked me to wait for a few minutes until he was free. The place was packed but the barbers were on top of it and all doing quality work. The haircut itself was super clean and I would go as far to say, perfect. I asked for Geno to fade the sides and leave the top as is. He grabbed his clippers and got started. The blend was crisp, even and really sharp. I am always surprised at how many barbers have a chair and clippers but can't do a decent fade to save their lives. Geno nailed it. My (very picky) husband has been coming to Geno's for almost a year now and I think it's safe to say he's a "lifer". Today I brought our one year old son for the first time (second haircut). After his first cut was a disaster, I was totally nervous to ever cut his hair again, but it was time. Thankfully Yuri (who also cuts my husband) was so kind and S0 patient. I've been coming to this shop every 2-3 weeks for the last six months. Geno and his crew are friendly, professional, and really know what they're doing. They've always honored my appointments, and on the rare occasion that I happen to walk in without one, they do their best to seat me right away. They work quickly but they don't make you feel rushed like at other shops I've been to. I always ask for Ricci if he's around-- very talented guy and knows what works and what doesn't. He will always give you exactly what you ask for-- never cuts too much without asking. Smooth, clean fades with no rough edges or stray hairs, lots of attention to detail. Geno's is the classic barbershop, perfected for the 21st Century. You dont need an appointment, but if you want to not have to wait, then make one in advance. All the barbers on staff are great. I use Geno, and my children both use NJ. They do uniformly amazing work. Attention to detail is superb. Pricing is fair when you look at the service that you get.
