I adore Dr. Wang and I've always had great hygienists, Barbara and Doreen. I've been coming here for years and while I have tried out other dental clinics, I find that Dr. Wang always has my best interest at heart; she will not do unnecessary procedures and believes in maintaining teeth integrity for as long as possible before drilling into it and filling it with synthetics. My own critique is that the company uses a 3rd party website called MyDentalClique to have patients upload any medical/X-ray information from other dental clinics. For example, I had my dental x-rays taken at a different clinic and had to upload them to MyDentalClique in order for Gentle Dental to access them (for security and privacy reasons). There were technical difficulties downloading my x-rays on the day of my appointment. If you need to do this step too, I would recommend calling ahead prior to your appointment to confirm your documents are downloaded and ready to go by the time you have your appointment. read more

I am really surprised by the negative reviews in the post below because I've had nothing but positive experiences from this place! It could be because I'm a grad student at UM, and they know the dental insurance there down cold. (You really just have to give them your plan # once and not think about it again until a couple years later when they check to make sure their records are up to date.) A friend referred me to this place, and although I entered a nervous wreck (hadn't been having my bi-annual cleanings for 3 or 4 years out of fear...) and knew I had cavities, Dr. Wang and Barb were so friendly and unassuming, they did not make me feel bad even once for the six (yes, SIX, ridiculous) cavities I had developed over the years. We scheduled appointments for the next few weeks to have them filled, and Dr. Wang told me exactly what my options were and how much they would cost out-of-pocket. I had two fillings done at a time, and each time, Dr. Wang made sure that I was as comfortable as possible during the procedure. Most of my friends are also grad students at UM and have a similar dental plan to mine, so I recommend Gentle Dental to them. I really love this place and am no longer afraid to go to the dentist. Edit [12/04/2011]: I should add that yes, all six of those cavities were legit, full-blown cavities that you could see with your naked eye were causing structural damage. They do not try to cheat your insurance out of money here by pushing unnecessary, extensive dental work. The last time I visited in September, I was worried about these black spots forming on the surface of some of my teeth. Both Barb and Dr. Wang checked them out for me to make sure they were not cavities, and they explained that sometimes the black spots are just staining caused by foodstuffs. I've been with Dr. Lacin for 2 procedures now, she's good, very patient and has a nice personality. The staff have a great customer/patient appreciation. They explain everything to you prior to anything and very courteous. Now if I could just remember my very first hygienists/assistant, she was the best out of the ones I got so far. GENTLE DENTAL SHELBY TWP LOCATION CHARGING A COVID FEE I am Very highly disappointed and upset that GENTLE DENTAL, the company/Shelby Twp location are charging $10.00 per patient for a COVID Fee. I feel this is a BOGUS FEE and GENTLE DENTAL company is totally taking advantage of the COVID buracratical situation. I have many clients who own and run dental offices and they are not charging a COVID FEE!!! Not to mention that that Bogus COVID fee was not disclosed to me PRIOR to mine and my daughter's appointments, which I believe may be against the law! Started on 2/6/2022 I had no problem with the professional staff at Gentle Dental Assoc. (GDA) as they were professional and courteous in my experience. However, the problem here was the front of the house (i.e., the Business Ofc. end of the practice and their rude Ofc. Mgr.) The management philosophy in the GDA Business Office appears to be that the Patient is always wrong regardless of what the Business Office does, fails to do or should have done. In my situation, when the Business Ofc. was Negligent, the Ofc. Mgr. offered no apology and made no effort to resolve our dispute other than to aggressively demand payment. When presented with facts, the Ofc. Mgr. continued to insist that the Patient is responsible for additional costs even though Negligence by the Business Office led to those additional costs unnecessarily. I wrote to the Owner re: my complaint about the unethical conduct of the Ofc. Mgr. and his refusal to accept responsibility for the Negligence of his staff. Additionally, the Ofc. Mgr. routinely misrepresented facts rather than accept any responsibility for his leadership failures. Unfortunately, the Owner never bothered with a response to my letter, so I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). In answer to the complaint, the Ofc. Mgr. gave them part of my medical documents (not germane to the issue in dispute) and in so doing, he compounded his procedural incompetence by violating my patient HIPPA privacy rights. When BBB offered to engage in dispute resolution, they finally closed the case because they were unable to get the cooperation of the business. In their conclusion, BBB determined that the company's response does not adequately address all the issues or make a good faith effort to resolve the dispute. Finally, I sought dispute assistance through the Michigan Atty General's Office of Consumer Protection, but GDA stonewalling again prevented resolution which resulted in the following: "...since Gentle Dental has not proposed a voluntary resolution of the matter, regrettably, we are unable to assist further." In my experience, if 40% of a practice's former patients (which is the case per Yelp reviews as of this writing) have taken the time to submit written complaints about their negative experience with that business, it is noteworthy. It seems a little odd to be reviewing a dentist, but I was really pleased with this place. A friend of mine suggested it to me, and i gave it a shot because it was on my insurance plan. They charge a (refundable) $50 deposit for a new patients' first appointment, which I think is very fair. Every time I call for an appointment, they can fit me in within 2 weeks. I'm allergic to latex, and they're really careful about it for me, which I really appreciate. What impressed me the most, though, was how they dealt with the billing. They checked my insurance BEFORE I got to my appointment, so that they knew exactly which services would be covered and to what extent. When they offered me extra services, they were able to tell me exactly how much I would have to pay out of pocket. I've been screwed at other dentists' offices before, with them telling me, "oh, you're covered, you're covered" and not actually knowing at all. It's 100% clear with these folks, and they're very nice to boot. read more

I had the best Dental experience ever at Gentle Dental! Dr. Debbie saw me a week sooner than anyone else could fit me in. I was terrified because I have had all my wisdom teeth for thirteen years and needed one pulled. I had never experienced wisdom tooth pain and it was absolutely unbearable. I was quoted almost double by four other dentists in town and they had me waiting weeks before I could be seen. Dental school included. The entire staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. I was in and out with ZERO pain. I kept waiting for it to hurt but it never did. Dr. Debbie is AMAZING!! I plan on becoming a regular patient at gentle dental now. THANKS!! read more

I had a crown that was done by a previous dentist only 2 years ago,I will not bash her at this time but her work is terrible,,anyway I had a crown literally fall out of my mouth last sat. And I was mortified! I called a few places and came across gentle dental..they said come in at 3:00 ,I was so grateful and scared, but the staff was so nice,the dentist I think his name was dr. Kim came in said hi,took an xray to make sure my real tooth was ok,,cleaned my crown,,,sealed in it,,and I was happily on my way..I will be going back there for sure! read more

I have been a patient here for over 10 years, and so have my husband and daughter. The team has always been great at informing us of the costs of procedures and work well with our insurance, Delta Dental. After a few frustrating experiences with a crown that took several remakes to seat properly, etc, I learned to ask for a dentist with over 5 years of experience. My busy week schedule made weekend appointments necessary and I rarely had to have an appointment during the week since there are always several docs on staff. I wish I can give 0 star. I was recommended by a friend to do a dental checkup at this place. While the hygienist Barbara did an excellent job in cleaning and x-ray, her colleague the dentist Yan Wang did the extreme contrary. On my first visit, Wang took one look at my x-ray and told me I had 8 cavities. They are small but they can become worse. I never had so many cavities in one go in my life. The only filling I had was done when I was still in elememtary school. I was panic. Hence, I asked her for her opinion. She suggested me to drill and fill all 8 cavities where later on other dentists I know told me I didn't have to do the drill and fill because they are so minor that some fluoride treatment and frequent flossing is possible to stop them from decaying further. Wang failed to give me the relevant information. Instead she took advantage of a person who had no knowledge of dental treatments. One the 2nd visit, Wang drilled and filled 3 of my teeth. Instead of waiting patiently till my return visit to determine if the filling is too high, she made me determine that on the spot when I was still under anesthesia which the effect was so strong that it took 5 hours to diminish after the drilling and filling was done. With that said, I basically couldn't feel anything accurately. I thought the filling of one of the molar was a bit high so she grinded it. The next day I called up the dental clinic to let them know the filling on that molar was a bit low actually. When I went to the clinic, I was the last patient of the day, all the staffs were in the rush to leave including Wang. She told me she could grind down the neighbouring molar. I said but the neighbouring molar has perfect natural surface, why would anyone want to grind it down. She said so that the molar has got shorter filling wouldn't be short and I wouldn't be biting on my natural tooth. I asked if that would cause any other side effect. She impatiently answered me "No no no, no problem at all. Just grind it down and that is all." I didn't feel comfortable about her attitude but I still had 5 more cavities for her to look after so I sat back and let her do what she proposed. The next day, immense tooth ache with extreme sensitivity towards any contact came in. Heat, cold, air, fluid, anything could trigger the tooth pain. I complained about the pain when I went back for the 4th visit, Wang said it's normal to have some pain after drill and fill. She sent me home with a prescription of a very high fluoride content toothpaste even though she knew I was breastfeeding. I brushed me teeth with that toothpaste according to the instruction once a day before bedtime for one month but the pain never went away. I'm stuck with it even till today. It's been half a year. In the past 6 months, I lived with regret of ever stepping into Gentle Dental. My 8 cavities didn't cause me any pain or any trouble. In fact, my other 5 cavities have stopped decaying. But Wang gave me 3 broken teeth and possibly permanent tooth ache. While I sat in her dental chair for the follow-up checkups and patch ups, she had been busy charging my insurance for charges that she was supposed to waive because they were follow-ups. So beware of Wang! Her practise is flawed, attitude is atrocious and her moral is flushed down the drain. I wish to know if there's any place I can complain and get some justice done other than posting comment here to warn people about the worst dentist I ever ran into. read more

I came in with a Dental emergency, and the office staff was kind enough to squeeze me in. While I realized it wasn't going to be a long appointment, I did think that they would at least listen to my concerns and help me with a treatment plan. What I got was an X-ray, and about two minutes with a dentist, Dr. Wang, who immediately told me that I needed to have the tooth pulled, gave me a prescription for an antibiotic, vicodin, and a referral to an oral surgeon. When I went to see the oral surgeon she referred me to, I was told that my tooth did not need to be lost, that it was a great candidate for a crown. That office called Dr. Wang, who said she had not referred me (though I had the referral in hand). Unprofessional, unkind, and clearly incompetent. DO NOT VISIT THIS OFFICE. read more

I used to visit there when I lived in AA. The receptionists were usually rude and aloof. I like Dr Debbie, who is very smart and competent. Although I didn't fully enjoy her conversations with the hygienist on Hollywood stars every time they were doing my cleaning. Dr. Wang is nice too, but occasionally gave wrong suggestions. My complaint is that I had great trouble asking them to transfer my files when I moved to another state. They have a weird electronic system no other dentist uses. Neither would they send me the files directly after the system failed many many times. After a while, they stopped replying to my email and I had to take new Xrays with my new dentist... My wife loves this office so I will keep going there for basic stuff; however, I am less than thrilled with them. Last week, their office said they would evaluate me for a dental implant, and also said they would schedule the extraction. Then today they called asking me why I had both appointments scheduled. I'm going back to the University of Michigan School of Dentistry to deal with the implant. I can have any hack pull a tooth so I'm not going to pay a premium for them to go in without any plan. I'm not going for the jack o'latern look. Also, be careful which dental hygienist you get. One we used to see would regale us the whole visit with tales of how she was trying to get pregnant and all her fertility procedures. The gentleman who extracted my wife's wisdom tooth was a jerk so I definitely do not want to deal with him again either if I can help it. read more

I would not recommend this practice under any circumstances, for the following reasons: My out-of-pocket cost was almost double the quote I received from the office. After a routine cleaning and regular dental exam, a periodontist examined my teeth--even though there was nothing wrong with my gums or teeth and I'm a young woman in good health. The office, hygienist nor the periodontist explained that the exam was an additional service that was not part of the routine dental exam, and it resulted in another $100 billed to my insurance, some of which I had to pay out of pocket. The office mis-billed my insurance, but insisted I pay their estimated fee before releasing my dental records.*** The receptionist and front desk staff were rude, especially when I inquired about the above bill and the office's fees for services, including fillings. In addition, during my first visit, the receptionist put her finger in her ear and mouth several times at various intervals, but did not wash her hands or use hand sanitizer before handling credit cards and patients' charts. In short: unethical billing and examination practices, non-existent customer service and hygiene concerns. **Withholding a patient's records is in fact a violation of HIPPA privacy laws, which state that you must release a patient's records at his or her request. Facilities are suboptimal and feel chaotic. Whats worse are the grossly unprofessional, unorganized and somtimes rude office staff. Exceptionally disappointing. The providers themselves usually meet expectations, and some were highly skilled and very pleasant. The hygienists in particular are great and are really focused on patient comfort. That said, at times treatment plans are not always coordinated. I had two occassions where what I asked to have looked at over the phone I was told on arriving could not be dealt with because of lack of time. I had the improession that providers were rushing around most of the time. With so many options for insured patients, I would certainly look elsewhere. read more

I've been to Gentle Dental for two check-ups over the past two years and have worked with two dentists and two hygienists. Scheduling the appointment was easy and they have Saturday hours (always a plus). I think they made the dental experience as pleasant as dental experiences can be. Absolutely the worst dental office I have ever encountered. The bill for a common cleaning , they say, was beyond what the insurance allowed and yet they never asked for approval or even let me know the services would cost beyond what my insurance covered. Rather, when confronted, they responded that "you signed a contract" so you must pay the extra fee. I've never had to pay an extra fee with what my insurance naturally covered for a twice yearly cleaning. Further, when I objected to paying the extra amount, they threatened to report it to collections, thus, indirectly threatening to hurt my credit. Something very scam-like and fraudulent is occurring at this office and the way they bill their patients. Can't wait to find another dental office. read more

I love this place! I have had major services here fillings, wisdom tooth consultation, root canal) and they are great. I came in recently with stitches on my bottom lip and needed to get 2 teeth fixed. They were so gentle and patient with me (I'm a big baby) to make sure that I wasn't in any pain(and I wasn't). My first appointment took forever, which I can look past. It happens.. but, then the dentist I saw told me to sit tight for an hour because the other dentist coming in knew more about root canals & he wanted him to take a look. It was much longer than an hour I had to wait. I finally popped my head out to see what was taking so long. I was told the doctor I was waiting for didn't have time to see me, so they wanted to refer me out to a root canal specialist. I was not interested in a root canal, I just wanted the tooth pulled. I scheduled another appointment to get the tooth pulled. They just called me at 8pm on a Thursday to cancel my appointment for noon tomorrow & to inform me they want to refer me out to an oral surgeon for the extraction. The tooth pain has been keeping me up at night, so I am very frustrated they didn't call earlier today. I might have been able to get in somewhere else tomorrow (the Friday before Memorial Day weekend). Now I have to deal with tooth pain for a minimum of 5 more days. I am a doctor as well & am quite familiar with office procedures & scheduling. This was handled very unprofessionally. I am actually grateful no one did work on my tooth because I feel it would have gotten messed up. I wont be going back, nor referring anyone here. read more

Gentle Dental Association had the audacity to send me a letter stating I could not come back as a customer. I had no intentions of ever going back to that office long before that letter was composed or sent to my home. I am not a happy customer. The dentist on her own decided to make me a denture with a gap wide enough for General Lee to march an army through. The picture I gave her did not have such a wide gap. Nor did my son have 12 cavities as diagnosed by another dentist to which I am going to file a complaint with the American Dental Association. This office took my $400 cash dollars from the $1,485 I paid for a denture. Gentle Dental Association took my money and did not give me the product promised to me. Now I prefer for an America court of law to decide if I owe that office $400, not Gentle Dental Associations office staff. read more

I hated going to the dentist and was so scared to need to find a new dentist after moving to Ann Arbor. Previously I'd worry myself until I was extremely ill before an appointment for a simple cleaning. The staff here was very nice, helpful and answered all my questions. The office is up to date with all the latest technology. I needed work done to relieve some pain and fix a few cracked fillings. I was shocked by the amount of work the dentist originally told me I'd need. She took time to show me the x-rays, explain where the damaged parts were and walked me through how she would fix them. The front desk verified that everything was covered before any work was done. Everything was scheduled so that my insurance would cover it and I'd not have to pay more out of pocket than my deductible. During the repair work Dr. Wang and assistants constantly made sure I was comfortable, relaxed and feeling no pain. I felt terrible for asking to stop a few times when I'd tense up. I had no "actual" pain during the work. I've been back about 5 or 6 times now. Since around the 3rd appointment, I was no longer sick just thinking about the going. I'm not sure why I waited so long to switch dentists. read more

After being terrified of going to the dentist due to a horrific experience at another local office four years ago, Gentle Dental has given me new hope for how easy and non-anxiety-inducing dental care can be. I was treated kindly and compassionately, instead of made to feel small and incompetent for my dental anxiety as I had been elsewhere. Hygienist Barbara and dentist Dr. Wang were both extremely knowledgeable, kind, patient, and gentle. I had to make a follow-up appointment to have two cavities taken care of, and I believe this is the only time I've had a dentist appointment scheduled that I haven't fretted about. All of the staff are ready to listen to your concerns and fears, and work with you to either overcome them, or at the very least make you as comfortable as possible. I moved to Ypsilanti about a year ago and was in search of a Dentist and looked at reviews and there's were decent so I decided to give it a try. I went to my appointment and the first thing I noticed was everything was very high tech very different from what I was used to at my last dentist so I thought this should be a good appointment. The hygienist checked my teeth with multiple different types of technology (not sure what it was all for). With just that she found 5 cavities, I was shocked since my last appointment was about 8 months prior and my dentist never mentioned any cavities forming nor did I have any sensitivity. The dentist came in and I can't even remember her name because she never introduced herself or took the time to get to know me or walk through what work was needed. The dentist then left and the hygienist was eager to make appointments for all 5 cavities, so I did. I left the dentist puzzled on how I needed 5 cavities to be filled. A week later I was having second thoughts that I should have a second opinion. I then cancelled my appointments with them and transferred to another office. I went to my new office and they found no forms of cavities that needed to be filled ASAP. And the dentist pulled up the pictures and x-ryas went through them with me. Just a warning, get a second opinion if you're feeling uneasy! I felt like a insurance paycheck and not a patient. read more
