I haven't gone here in over a year. (i was just reminded of it when they sent me 'please come back' email blast with no way to unsubscribe. just for that: i write this review:) i was a regular when i first moved to santa monica. fresh off the boat - from arizona. the price was right. the yelp reviews were decent. For about 4 months this was my go-to spot. I even recommended it to a couple of my friends. later.. I come to realize it's one of those "you get what you pay for places". the office is sterile and unrelaxing. the younger gal never remembered a damn thing about me. I'm pretty sure she thought I was a new client each time. the wax they use sucks. it sticks on your skin for a while after. you need a full shower before certain areas stop feeling sticky. even with all that - I kept going. It was convenient. I'd ride my bike there - no big deal, right? then I had an appointment with the owner. She had a european/russian accent - i remember that. and I remember she offended me. Bless her heart - she probably didn't know any better. But when I mentioned my boyfriend (now fiance) was a teacher, she tells me I should leave him. I believe, "they don't make enough money," were her exact words. excuse me? i met you once. you wax vaginas for a living. the man i love teaches children. he loves it. he's much better at his job than you are at yours - that's for sure. and lady, that was an awful thing to say. i never went back. screw that place. i got over crappy wax jobs from crappy people real quick after that. This town is too large and there are much better wax jobs out there for the same price from nicer people. don't settle for mediocrity. read more

They are on the 4th floor of an office/medical building. It is potentially off-putting if you're used to going to the first floor for your beauty rituals, but I've driven to the VALLEY for crazier things, so the 4th floor at 7th and Wilshire isn't exactly Tijuana. Once I found metered street parking, quarters, the hallway to the lobby, elevators, and finally the suite on the 4th floor, I was asked to fill out paperwork with unnecessary personal information. It's just a wax, people! So, the fun part: she showed me to a treatment room that had windows wide open. It really adds a level of exhibition to have the windows completely open when you're going to be naked for your treatment. I decided to believe there was no one looking through binoculars from nearby building tops and go on with it. Now, I'm "fairly sure" no one was looking, but if you did notice me in the window the other day, be sure to say "hey" the next time you see me around town and mention you saw me getting waxed. That would be neat. The next idea was that she was going to exit the room, have me undress, and then she was going to open the door to come in while I was lying on the table. No problem, right? Wrong: the door opens into the main lobby area. So, let's say she opens the door at the same time the UPS guy decides to make a delivery to their office. I would bet he'd be friendly the next time he saw me around town. I'm not a shy person, but C'MON. Although she disagreed with my dilemma (not sure how the line-of-sight could be disputed) she gave me one of those really nice paper blankets you get at the OB/GYN. My usual waxer just stays in the room - problem solved. Now, why do some waxers (including this one) use your hands as props during the wax, and put you in strange positions? A good waxer won't do this to you. Also, the powder goes on BEFORE the wax, not after. That's waxing 101, for me. I should mention that she was a very nice lady - she would probably make a great birthing nurse. She suggested deep breathing several times, and asked if I was okay countless times. Every time, I let her know "I've done this before, I'm really okay." Strangely, I think it was harder on her than it was on me. So, if you need someone to baby you through a long 30 minute waxing (I prefer the 7 minute version), you think a brazilian wax might be a little like childbirth, and you're probably going to cry, Gentle Journey just might be the place for you. read more

Jena and Lia are both fantastic. The first time I came here, there was some appointment confusion; I recommend calling them rather than booking online. They send reminders when your appointment is coming up and are both extremely friendly and personable (without being too nosy!). Both the Gentle Journey office and the restroom across the way--which I assume they help maintain--are impeccably clean, if not overly spa-like. Also, you get a discount on your wax the month of your birthday! So speak up! :) read more

If you have sensitive skin, acne, or a flawless face, Lia is the professional for you! I can't speak to her waxing services but I've been a loyal once-a-month facial client of hers for the last 2 to 3 years. To explain a little bit about me...I have struggled with skin that breaks out on a whim since my college years (now in my mid-30s) and have seen many well-regarded Dermatologists and tried umpteen Rxs to treat my skin. Nothing ever really worked and even the most well-regarded in their field seemed to hardly ever take the time to "get to know" my skin. When an accupuncturist I was seeing for my skin recommended Lia, I thought, 'it can't hurt"! Enter Lia. She immediately said "you don't have an acne problem; you have sensitive skin"! Believe it or not, this was quite a revelation for me. So, that is how we've treated my skin, and I won't say it was an overnight cure - it wasn't, but I don't take any more medications and all-in-all my skin has become much more resiliant, less breakout prone and has virtually no sensitivity. Lia is great - she will tell you what she thinks and she can always tell what you have and haven't been doing just by taking a look at your face. She has a great sense of humor and ultimately really cares about what is going on with your skin and in your life. Parking is easy and while the building is a little dated, her space is nicely decorated, clean and calming. It's not a fancy spa (although she does include a great neck/shoulder/arm massage with the facial), but she's not charging spa prices either. It's a perfect place for routine visits. She's replaced my dermatologist and I'm a lot happier and healthier for it! read more

Totally overdue... I went to Lia (though Jenna is my usual) to have my underarms and lower legs done, Lia even threw in a free bikini wax because she thought it was uncivilized how wild I had let things get. I have always had amazing waxes here, both Lia and Jenna are extremely thorough. I had somehow managed to book Lia at the exact time her parking meter was about to run out so my leg wax was a little patchy but I forgive her because mine was too and I know what quality they can provide. (Also I had a bad sunburn and my dry peeling skin was not helping) Aside from one slightly off experience, Gentle Journey is my favorite spot to get waxed. I found Lia 2 years ago when my friend bought us a facial deal on Groupon, and I am so happy that I did! I have adult hormonal acne and Lia does an amazing job with extractions. She always spends at least an hour and a half with me during my facial and microdermabrasion. She also does a great job waxing my eyebrows. She doesn't push products on you and her prices are more than reasonable. I have been very pleased with her work. read more

This place is ok, theyve always done a good job but i guess i just dont like the fact that it has a medical office type feel to it rather than a spa atmosphere. Nothing bad to say really, except the fact that i went here to get my underarms (vverrrrry sensitive skin) waxed for my high school prom, and they were red for a week. I have tried many places for bikini waxes, and believe me when I say there are places you just don't want to go! This one is very small but they were quick and painless. I don't like to get the every popular Brazilian wax--a little too aggressive more me--so the regular bikini wax is what I usually opt for. The woman who helped me did so with truly a gentle hand. I was really amazed at how little ripping there was. If you've never had a bikini wax, and are thinking about it, I would either come here or to Brentwood Skin--both offer a light touch and good results. read more

I have been to at least 3 different places to get waxed and Gentle Journey is by far the best. One place charged over $80 and it was so dark in there I was left with all kinds of spots that were still not hair-free. This other place up on Wilshire & 26th charged $55 and it was THE MOST PAINFUL wax I've ever had. I only went there because I waited too long to make an appointment at GJ - a mistake I will never make again! It took that girl well over an hour and I was practically in tears it was so painful and I have a very high pain tolerance! Olya is my favorite there because she warns you on the sensitive areas to breathe and then she'll fan the area immediately after! She's very thorough and she always makes me feel very at ease - even in the most awkward positions! lol However, I do have to agree with Kim D. about the huge windows. I also feel really exposed because I know you can be seen from the street since I went outside right after my appointment and looked. Not to mention if anyone in the building across the street has binoculars, they'd be able to see EVERYTHING. I don't care about how old the building is or if the elevator shakes, if that keeps the price of my waxing down, who cares?? I don't need a spa atmosphere to get a good wax. Great hidden gem in Santa Monica. I've been a client of Lia's for over four years now, and honestly I wouldn't know what to do if I ever moved! Well actually I'd probably schedule business trips to coincide with all my waxing and facial appointments. 7th and Wilshire is a fine location, but Gentle Journey is on the 4th floor of a scary building that, on weekends, a customer must access from the back door. There are NO SIGNS anywhere, and the elevator shakes. The Gentle Journey space itself, however, is quite clean and zen. Lea did my bikini wax - it took a long time (about 30 min) but was remarkably painless. I have super sensitive skin too, and the products used were very gentle. I felt a bit exposed, however, as there are large windows in the waxing room that overlook Wilshire Blvd - not a tiny street that Wilshire Blvd. I was extremely satisfied with the results at Gentle Journey, but somewhat dismayed by the surroundings. I'll probably go again though - I will just ask for the curtains to be drawn. read more

I have been going to Gentle Journey for many years now. When I first started going it was because of the location and price. I quickly realized that Lia knew my skin better than any dermatologist. As in the previous reviewer's comment, I had been going to a dermatologist once a month to take care of my acne problem, and it turned out my skin was just dehydrated. Lia treated my skin for this problem, and suddenly all my friends were asking how I take care of my skin, and why it is so clear. I always attribute this the Lia's facials. She is calming, friendly, and just really good at her specialty... Amazing facials that clear your skin! If you are tired of struggling with medicines, shots, and doctors just giving you what they give everyone else, make an appointment and ask for Lia... She will change your world! read more

I have been going to Gentle Journey for almost 2 years and I plan to never go anywhere else. Olia and Jenna are not only very professional and very good at what they do, but they are quite friendly and make the experience as painless as possible. I originally started going there just for my eye brows and bikini line, but after Olia's playful nagging about getting a Brazil, I now get one and my lip done as well. She's now onto "nagging" about a facial and I'll be getting one this month i'm sure. They are on Wilshire and 7th, and definitely worth checking out. The place is clean as can be with a lot of light coming in (they are on the 4th floor, no one can see you) and it's just got a very laid back vibe. Call and clean yourself up already ;) read more

I love this place.I got a great wax and even got a discount because my session was during my birthday month. Minus one star because they didn't sing happy birthday or anything. Just kidding. I was pretty happy, though, because a discount on a good Brazilian sure beats whatever lame gift my step-dad got me. I was hesitant at first that the woman doing my waxing didn't talk to me--she just kept smiling, but she seemed nice I guess. She also kept looking at her pager, which was weird because it's not 1995 and she's not a doctor or a contractor, so I don't know why she had one, but whatevs. Gentle Journey was a nice change of pace from the usual hit/miss places I've gone to. In the past, I was used to going to places where they won't shut up when they wax you because they're trying to distract you from the fact that they're ripping your pubic hair off, like I don't already know that...But this place was good about it. They were very professional about everything. Lia even gave me a cold bottle of water to put on the inside of my thighs, which was nice because it must have been 90 out that day. Gotta love LA weather. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because it's on the fourth floor. I know this sounds picky, but I don't think I've ever been waxed on anything other than the first floor(professionally, that is).The first time I went to Gentle Journey, I had to take my grandmother with me and it was a hassle because she hates elevators and is in a wheelchair. After a few minutes of arguing, she agreed to come up to the fourth floor to get waxed. I just hope next time I go back, I don't have to take her. This place is the best place to go, hands down and I AM an expert. I am an expert because I know this town's best places like the back of my hand. I am 42 years old I have lived in L.A. for over 20 years and have had bikini waxing done by the most expensive "elite" places here. I always am left with ingrown hairs that grow back weird. Not to mention even with the best places it is a challenge, sometimes you get burned, sometimes you get a way too friendly chatty person who doesn't understand you are having hair ripped out of your private parts and perhaps a lengthy perky conversation isn't what you want. Or you get someone who doesn't speak at all and seems angry to be even doing the job, (which I guess I can't blame them.) But then I stumbled on Gentle Journey thank goodness! I have been going to Gentle Journey for 3 years. Never an in grown hair, I have never been burned, it is always painless for the most part, and the best part is Lia who does it. She is kind soft spoken and not aggressive, friendly, but not over bearing. In other words she is EXACTLY the kind of person you want to have do that. She is efficient so it's not too long, but not too quick so it's thorough. I decided to have her do my brows too this last time I went and they turned out fantastic. I have been going to Anastasia for years, but I think Gentle Journey just took their business away because she did every bit as good of a job at half the price. read more

Gentle Journey is the best! It really is a hidden gem. I don't need an overpriced spa, I need a professional wax, and Lea is exceptional. She does a fantastic job, she takes her time, and as the name states - she is gentle. I've had some awful experiences in the past, but I have had zero troubles since going to Gentle Journey. Don't be intimidated by the building. I personally like the open windows and the bright room, but if you don't - just say so, and she will accommodate. I must have tried 10 places before I ended up at Gentle Journey. Lia is a true pro and this is the ONLY place I trust for waxing on the westside. She is upbeat and friendly and always does a fantastic job with minimal pain. Prices are very reasonable for Santa Monica and she will always make time to fit you in for an appointment, even if you call last minute. She is also a pro at facials, I could really see and feel a difference in my skin after just one treatment. I have been to other salons where you are red/painful/uncomfortable after leaving and used to think that was normal until I had my first treatment here. I've been seeing Lia at Gentle Journey since 2003, and I will never go to anyone else. She is THE BEST at waxing, period. I've gone to many different places and had many different aestheticians in the 18 years I've been getting leg and brow waxes, but I can honestly say that Lia is the most knowledgeable, most highly educated, and the most thorough skin care expert I have ever gone to. She is extremely skilled in her technique and produces excellent results with minimal pain/discomfort from waxing. Once I found her, I stopped going to anyone else. I'll start with a disclaimer: I have never written a negative online review for anything, but in this case I feel like I should do that to prevent others from the frustration I am feeling right now. I found the place on the internet and had to make a rush appointment for an eyebrow wax. My eyebrows are my favorite feature, they are (were!) solid, nicely shaped, and generally easy to work with. I figured going to a Westside spa will be a pretty safe bet. I was wrong...The last time my eyebrows looked so plucked, uneven, and unsure of their own shape was when I got them done for $5 in an Alhambra strip-mall, except this time I didn't have a language barrier to blame. The girl who provided the service was sweet and apologetic realizing how unhappy I was, but that did little for my general experience. I was considering getting a facial there, but to be honest, the place looks quite unsightly as you walk into the front door, there was something about the vibe that simply didn't feel spa service oriented. Now, after what's been done to my eyebrows I doubt I would let them near my skin. I guess my one piece of advise would be: don't assume that a Westside location, and higher prices spells merit, and will provide you a decent service. read more

But I can say that my attendant (waxer?) was very nice and considerate, and she worked fast but was also chatty. It is a little hard to find, but once you do, it hardly matters where it is. Like many of the people who reviewed Gentle Journey, I came in on a social media deal but I stayed because Lia is just plain old wonderful. Her micro-dermabrasion appointments include a facial component and shoulder, scalp, and hand massage. Lia is funny and kind, and as gentle as the name of her business. She has a sense of humor (which I guess one of the earlier reviewers didn't get). Her wise-crack was simply a joke: If she'd said it to me, I would have laughed. (And I am a teacher!!). Her prices are great, and would cost twice as much in fancier looking digs. Lia also uses great natural products that smell so yummy I even bought some. Fortunately, she is not one of those sales-driven kinds of facialists who make you want to smack them. I had to practically beg her to sell it to me. Worth going to? You bet. And my skin actually looks a lot better, by the way. Which is why I will continue going to her as long as I can. read more
