I went on the Gentleman yesterday May 31st with my 2 sons, dad and sister and it was an absolute BLAST! I loved everyone on the crew!!! Vern, Louie, Aaron, (I'm so sorry I never caught his name, very very sweet man who busted his butt in the galley making sure everyone was fed was extremely awesome as well) and the captain! I've been fishing all my life with my dad as a kid but only a handful of times deep sea fishing (I'm more of a lake fisher) so I'm definitely NOT the greatest!!! But the crew literally cared about everyone on board and went around making sure everyone was ok and taken care of and helped everyone reel in a fish! My older son wasn't having much luck so the galley man (again sorry I wish I knew your name :() he wanted to make sure my son got to reel in a fish and he made my sons day!! Thank you so much for that experience for him!! Then Vern came to my rescue and helped me catch a rock fish! I loved how you can just see and tell how sweet everyone on the crew was and how helpful everyone is!! Louie was such a sweetheart he saw my dad was getting a little seasick and he kept asking how my dad was doing and it just meant the world to me! The crew on this boat was excellent. But there were problems. It is an extremely uncomfortable boat. The way the galley is laid out it is small and not comfortable at all. it was crowded on a Tuesday. They had canceled the other boat I was going out on for a private charter. At the last minute. So they consolidated us over to the gentleman. There was a handful of old school guys on there who park their spot on the rail for eternity. If you don't go in and make your claim early you get stuck fishing and all the bad spots around the boat. They would go up and get the bait and leave their rods leaning there against the rail for you to trip over. If you try to squeeze in it could get a little unpleasant. Despite the great crew I wouldn't fish that boat again. read more

I started going on the gentleman back in 2020. By Then crew was not rude. But was not helpful. That's ok. The smoking was unbearable. I've gone on this boat once or twice a week during the whole season now 2022. They fixed the smoking everyone vapes now (which I'm ok with) and the crew was more helpful. But this is not a boat for beginners. Its a great boat, but a boat for more experienced anglers. To enjoy and succeed on this boat you really have to spend hours of your own time learning to tie all sorts of knots, like a dropper loop and you'll be practicing casting at the park for hours and weeks on end. If you ask them to tie on a lure, they probably won't because they'll assume you're too inexperienced if you can't tie a lure on. Which is partially true, I saw a few guys who seemed decently experienced but maybe lazy or used to having self hands tie on knots. You won't be getting help on this boat unless it's to gaffe a fish or land a fish. And most the guys who fish this boat don't ask for help either. Now if you get hooked 8 out of 10 times the crew will even be willing to reel it in for you. But that's not all the time. One guy got hooked hard and everyone was yelling like help help this guy this is a real one. Fish broke off help never came. That being said, nobody should hold this boat or captain at fault for catering to experienced anglers. It's a business niche. The speed twin is exactly the opposite. They only cater to beginners who can't cast and if you try casting on the speed twin the captain and crew get nasty and all high horse on that boat. God forbid you pull out a lure on the speed twin they'll try to citizen arrest you. So experienced anglers aren't welcomed on a couple of the other boats. That's just what a business plan is. If you're novice so yourself a favor and go on the speed twin and avoid this boat. Otherwise it's an amazing boat captain is experienced he's been doing this since at least the 1980's and he's a decent guy for a boat captain. Look ocean captains are weird people in general it's a really strange job and pretty isolated. Yes the Aloha Spirit is the best boat in the fleet - but it's booked up a year ahead. The gentleman and island fox are the next best thing for experienced anglers - and the speed twin is for anyone who doesn't know what a reel is. Everything in perspective. read more

Ok so love to fish and since I don't own boat we typically have to go out on a charter. SO this trip the website states they purposely under sale the boats so that everyone is a like more comfortable. This boat holds 60 and 60 is what was on the boat. The crowd was very diverse and for the most part very low key. The major issue is for us non smokers you end up having most of the crew that smokes and then you have hand full of passengers that smoke all of which are tossing their cigarette butts into the ocean!!!! This is a huge issue for not only me but several paying customers not to mention the number issue is that you are harming our ocean!!!!! I hope you make it a policy for anyone that can't wait until they get on land to smoke to please disposed of your trash in properly. The other major issue is you're letting everyone who's brings us a small rock fish that pretty much kills the fish just toss them back to drown and die. Schoolteacher had a pair of passes for deep sea fishing from Channel Island fisherman. She scheduled a midweek day trip of it. I was excited. I hadn't been fishing since I was a youngster fishing for perch out of a canoe up in New Hampshire. The day arrived, and we were running late because somebody has a donut problem. As we rocketed along the 126, Schoolteacher called them several times and asked them if they could please hold the boat, and thankfully, they did. Plus one star for the Gentleman. When we arrived at the shop at the dock, I remembered that I was told they only accept cash. Luckily, they've got an ATM there for you to use. After withdrawing some cash, I bought the 'required' tackle stuff we needed for our rented rods. I also needed a fishing license. Unfortunately, those expenses took all my money I had just withdrawn. So, I went to the ATM again, to take out more money. Because things on the boat were done with cash only. Of course it is. But they held the boat. So they're still cool....ish. We approached the boat, and climbed on board. An older gentleman, sporting a 'Gentleman' crew hoodie sneered at me and told me "Next time try get your wife up earlier." I looked at him and let him know It was actually my fault we were late. He chuckled to himself. Any of you who've met me know that I like absolutely everybody. This guy? 100% A-Hole. I've been informed he's not crew, and just a regular. Still, 100% A-Hole material right here. So the boat heads out. It's a pretty rough ride, and there aren't any seats on the boat. When we begin fishing, the crew is helpful. One of them helps me thread our fishing rods. The guy in the glasses was nice. They're also another guy inside at a table assigning numbers, and asking about Jackpot. Entries into the pot are $12, and oh, the fish bag is $2. FYI: Jackpot = The person who catches the biggest fish gets all the money in the pot. I declined to enter the jackpot, as I didn't really know how much fish I'd catch. Which is good. Because I caught 3 small fish the entire trip. When I attempted to move towards the back of the fish, where people seemed to be catching, 100% A-Hole physically blocked me and said; "The people who get here early get the good spots! People who lounge in whenever should remember that." I heard rumors from other guests that 100% A-Hole talking them and kids in a similar A-Holeish manner. Over the course of the day, I caught a grand total of three fish. When I asked for help, I got alot of 'I'll be right there" and nobody came to help. I threw one fish back because he was little. Schoolteacher actually caught zero fish. Thank god I spent all that money on tackle. Phew! I suppose I'll have some fishing tackle as a momento of this trip. The guy who won the Jackpot was near me when the crewman was discussing his winnings. "The pot is at two hundred seventy dollars, and It's customary for the winner to give 30-50% of the totals. But most people just give it all to the boat" When the winner was confused, he repeated it often, emphasising the part where the boat normally gets half to all of the winnings. The winner listened, and then proceed to tip the boat thirty dollars. Karma really is pretty great when you get to see it happen up close. Both 100% A-Hole and the Crew-guy openly and loudly complained about it for another half hour. Which put some icing on Karma. Sunny in the galley was absolutely great. I watched her interacting with the kids, and she was nice and good at helping and encouraging them. Schoolteacher said that she makes one heck of a tuna sandwich. I also caught a cold beer from her later on in the trip. Eventually we were headed back, and the crew was busy cutting up the fish the people had caught. Because who wants to gut and clean their fish? $1 per fish was the assigned charge. I think that that's reasonable. When my number was called, he asked for $6 plus a tip. But....I only caught two fish? They had generously given me fish for my bag. That's nice of them. I paid them and tipped. They also put some fish into Schoolteacher's bag. So we both came home with large amounts of fish. Thankfully I had a thick plastic bag in the car. So remember A) Cash. B) Something to put the fish in when you get back to your car. C) A-Holes are out there, don't let them get to you. It's just their way. I honestly had fun fishing. Thank you Channel Island Sportfishing. I know that there are 100% A-Holes are out there, and I just happened to be stuck on a boat with one. I love fishing on the Gentleman, I got my fiancé fishing for her first time on the the gentlemen she's hooked she won't let me go fishing without her. They have great specials where are you can bring a kid on for free with every adult admission it's normally on Sundays we bring her son and he loves it there very kid friendly and they're always there to help, I highly recommend this boat to anybody who wants to have a great day of fishing. The food is also great I always get myself a breakfast burrito in the morning very tasty and a double bacon cheeseburger for lunch you can't beat that. Just one more thing don't forget to ask what size weights are they using it really helps out by using the proper weights and avoiding too many tangles are used to buy my hooks and weights at my local tackle shop but the prices here are much cheaper and they have everything you need. read more

Went fishing on their boat yesterday with really lame results. The captain kept us at an oil rig to fish the whole time, with nothing biting due to seals eating everyone's bait. The only other time I've gone deep sea fishing was on the Aloha that docks next to the Gentlemen. The Aloha was a much better experience compared to the Gentleman. Don't look for the Gentleman to take you to multiple fishing spots because we asked them and they didn't even consider moving. read more

When you go out fishing with CISCO, choose any other boat besides this one. I have gone out fishing on every vessel, except for the mirage. This is was the only trip I had that was not enjoyable. At all. I was miserable the entire time because the entire crew cast a shadow of negativity over the boat. They deck hands were rude and selfish. They would tend to their own poles before helping a customer with theirs. Also, the area that you check in had told many people on the boat that they needed certain weights and hooks for the freelance. Once on the boat, the crew informed people that we would be using a different set up. They then proceeded to get angry when a countless number of people didn't have the right gear. This is the fault of the crew. It's called communication. You need it in order to function properly. Their lack of communication skills resulted in upset customers and a poor fishing experience. If I'm paying you 70 dollars plus tip for the fish cleaning, you better be polite and as helpful as possible. If you have a problem with beginners then you should have chose a different line of work. The whole draw of the CISCO company is providing the advice and helpful guidance needed in order to have a successful "deep sea" fishing trip. Overdue review. The crew is a total joke compared to other top notch crews/boats at CISCO and nearby Sea Landing in S.B. As other reviews have indicated, the crew has an attitude problem, especially toward beginners. Why would you do that? Haven't we all been there? Isn't your job to be patient and provide guidance for the people who need it? Being a condescending jerk is likely the reason you're not getting good tips. As a seasoned guy who fish up and down the coast from Cabo to Morro Bay year round, I understand how hard charter/open party fishing boat crews work and how little they get paid. Sadly, there isn't an established "par/norm" for tipping like the restaurant industry does, where even a first timer would know about it. Us regular guys tend to always take care of a good crew as much as we can, and the newbies not so much. That is just how it is. Being a prick about it and pressuring beginners into giving you a big tip or "all of the jackpot" is only going to turn them away and never allow them to eventually become a regular that is essential to keeping your industry alive. As a whole, the crew is inpatient, terse, and overall unhelpful to beginners. I set up my own rig and know what I'm doing when fishing so I rarely need help. The crew's attitude toward myself and other seasoned fishermen are much friendlier. In multiple occasions, people are "reminded" about tipping, how little the crew makes, and how cleaning fish is how they make money. The tone is always negative, condescending, and pushy. No the crew doesn't get paid enough, but that's not the customer's fault. The crew spends time fishing. This is a big no no and a red light. Fish on your own time, not when you're paid to work. "Fishing for someone who probably can't catch fish"? There are those people on every trip. Why are you using them as an excuse? Did they ask you to fish for them? Did they hire you as a private help to fish for them? What about the rest of the paying customers that you're supposed to be helping? It's lame that the owner or one of the crew wrote a review of their own. You can read it if Yelp hasn't already removed it due to conflict of interest, and I hope they don't, so that everyone can see the true nature of this crew. While pretty much admitting to all the complaints that people have pointed to, they got defensive and tried to justify their actions as acceptable. This fishing crew is so not professional!!!!! My experience here was so subpar. To start, once I checked in they asked if my party wanted fish cleaning/filet. I said, no because we wanted to filet the fish that we caught. The person who checked us in was rude and said, " you're going to take you fish home like that?" And I said yes!!! That's how we take our fish home. The next thing is that the captain and crew were also fishing with the customers and were very condescending to some of the first timer on a fishing trip. I've been on numerous boats from San Diego to Marina Del Rey and all of the boats weren't rude as this crew. They were all about making money. I've fished multiple times thru Ventura n this is by far the worst experience I have ever had.Not only were they rude but very demanding for a tip. Usually when u tip someone it should be up to u how much u tip not be told it has to be at least 40% because we're like a restaurant. They charged us wrong for the beers and instead of saying let me fix that for u they said "oh now I don't feel so bad I made up for my tips" if u r planning a trip I would use a different boat or go thru Ventura worst experience by far never again. I will never take another fishing trip on the GENTLEMAN boat again. First we got to the main office/tackle shop and everything was great, the employees at the shop were helpful and provided great service. The problem started as soon as we stepped on the boat when one of the crew members decided to yell for me to move, I thought it was strange since I had my back towards him and it was not like I saw him coming behind me and decided to stand in his way. 20 minutes later the boat takes off and every time anyone in my group asked a question to a crew member, it was either ignored or answered with a bad attitude. We decided to ignore it and try to have a good time. Fishing experience was horrible, too many people on the boat. Everyone's line was getting tangled. This is the only part the crew stepped up and was quick on getting people untangled. JACKPOT WARNING: One of the guys in our group caught one of the biggest fish on the boat. The jackpot fish was between his fish and some guy who spent most of the time with the Captain (appeared to be a friend) he did very little fishing and ended up catching a big fish. At the end of the trip they weighted both fish up against each other and the other fish was the winner. What everyone in our group noticed and few other people around us is that the fish looked like it had swallowed a ball. We kept an eye out for that fish when they started to gut and clean the fish. The first fish was the jackpot winner and as soon as crew member sliced the fish, nothing but water started to pour out. I'm not saying the fish was tampered with by anyone on the boat, but I have my suspicions. One of the guys in my group was sitting in the galley and noticed the list sitting in plain site with everyone's name and initials next to the names of people in the jackpot. The jackpot winners name was the last name on the list with no initials indicating he was in the jackpot (maybe they forgot, who knows). When my friend confronted the crew member, the guy laughed it off and walked away. Needless to say, we will not be returning back to the Gentlemen boat. The only reason why I gave it 2 stars is because the people at the tackle shop and the cook in the galley were great and gave excellent service. I took my son out on the Gentleman for a day of fishing. The deckhands Jeff, Randy, and Craig were awesome! O yeah don't forget Sunny who was cranking out delicious food all day in the galley while maintaining a super positive charm. The staff took care of us by setting up our gear, offering helpful tips, filleting our fish, untangling lines, and handling our fish. If you have no experience fishing, no worries here, these guys will hook you up (pun intended). This was my second trip out on the Gentleman and we all caught more than a few but didn't have a great catch like before. I know its hit or miss but regardless we still had a great time. Saturdays are half price for military and there is a discount for juniors otherwise its just over 60 a person. Plan on spending between 120 to 200 a person if you want to rent poles/tackle, eat/drink on the boat, have your fish cleaned, and tip your staff. I am already planning my next trip out! read more

Hey Yelp! it's been a while... I'm back! So 3:30 AM. on Saturday morning my wife and I, and 6 of our closest and craziest friends head to Ventura for a planned 3/4 day of angling! Let me start by saying this crew of people are so over the top, I wanted to tell the Capt as we boarded... "Were gonna need a Bigger Boat..." We took this boat over, and I know for sure this is the most fun this crew has ever seen, cause there ain't anyone out there as crazy and funny as us when were together. We commandeer the the front right of the bow, and immediately grabbed the two younger deck hands and let them know we are their main priority! LOL. They were a good crew. We were hoping for less of a turn out but, this boat got packed! Still a good time was had by all. There was 8 in our group and we for sure caught the most fish on the boat. Collectively we nailed about 77 fish. The jackpot fish came from my buddy's girl, and my wife had the second biggest fish. We yanked up Salmon Groupers, Red Snapper, Rock Fish, Sand Dabs, Sculpin, and Ling Cod but unfortunately they were shy of legal size. $300.00 + dollars worth of beer, and a few bucks worth a food later we left with bags of filets... and I'm telling you it was TASTY... So we went out on the Gentlemen on the tail end of a great week of fishing 7/18. It was a Friday so it was pay one adult fare and a Jr. goes free. Which is a pretty amazing deal. My buddies and I brought about 20 people on the boat probably 8 of them kids. (Spoiler alert one of my stars is because I was able to bring my son for free) I expected the boat to be full but not that full. I think its capacity is listed for 60 and we had 64 anglers out there. So to say that it was crowded was an understatement. We landed a few yellowtails and one of them was the jackpot. Which is where one of my largest beef's with the management of this boat comes in. My friend who won the jackpot, a life long fisherman was now being instructed to tip 50% of his jackpot winnings to the crew and that often times the entire jackpot is given. The Jackpot was like $380. The deck hand (an older gentlemen I can't remember his name) was very brazen and seemed very determined to try and convince my friend to tip a large portion of his winnings. I understand that deck hands often don't get paid extremely well, but there were 64 people on this boat at least 45 paid $70 to be on the boat, the galley jar was overflowing with tips, and they cleaned approx. $400 fish. I'm not great at math but I think they were not in danger of going home empty handed that day. From reading other reviews this is behavior that has gone on for years on this boat and its super concerning that it hasn't been addressed. I know my friend who won the jackpot who is a very generous tipper is never coming back on this boat again. Finally, this boat specifically on Fridays runs a special catering to Junior fishermen who get to fish for free, if an adult or dad pays full price. I know that can be anything under 15, and if thats the case I'd imagine it'd be good to be thinking that it might be appropriate to have a crew that is ready to help out beginners. There was 1 deck hand that was actually working for 64 people I think his name was Adam (he's the only other reason I gave another star). I don't know what the ratio should be but I don't know any profession where an acceptable ratio is 64-1. There was one other deckhand there who was getting paid, but the only thing he did was smoke a ton (I understand many fishermen smoke, shoot I like to smoke a backwood or two on a boat, however he smoked non-stop and it was a boat specifically marketed to families. It would've been nice to see some sort of restraint or designated smoking area, or at least not smoking above the bait tank the whole day where all our kids are coming up to get the fish), clean fish, occasionally scoop sardines into the bait boxes, and yell at people when they lost fist. This was crazy to me, and almost incomprehensible from an organizational stand point. I think its an amazing idea to provide opportunity to get people out on the water and potentially fall in love with ocean fishing by providing a two for one deal. However, if you provide them with an experience like this you may not only lose a customer, but you might turn people off from fishing entirely. I just think there could be some really neat, fun ways to actually press into this special and gain some loyalty and young fisher people who want to charter your boat for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately this was the opposite of that. My son who is 8 this was his second trip, deep sea fishing, and said sheepishly "this was fun... but the last trip was way more funner." This is true, we still had fun, but it was lots and lots and lots of work, which I think I paid for. So in summary, I, nor will the 19 other people we brought on the trip will go back out on the gentlemen while the crew stays the same. We took our son deep sea fishing for his first time. The crew was great. They let him drive the boat and almost every time they hooked a fish, let him reel it in for them. They taught us what we needed to l know and the captain kept us on the fish all day. Got a tangle in your line? Cody was right there to get it undone and get our lines back in the water. The crew was horrible the fishing was horrible. We stayed shallow due to some early morning wind even though it died off the captain didn't venture off more than 170ft of water. The fishing was the worst I've ever experienced I wouldn't have ever put fish that size in my gunnysacks. The deck hands were lazy and I found myself spending most of my time undoing tangles helping people take their fish off and rerigging while the captain was Doing circle around dead spots. This was my first time deep sea fishing and i had a great time. My boyfriend really wanted to go so we booked with them and it was the best decision ever. The only bummer of the trip was that one person got a yellow tale, but i did get a good amount of rock fish. I would have had a Bonita but a seal ate my fish right off my line. All the guys on the boat help you out and help to get lines free if tangled. The may look mean and grumpy, but super nice guys and funny too. They were great and so was the captain. If you have your own gear you can bring it too. If you don't, they sell you rentals and hooks and weights too. If you want to make sure you have all the right hooks and weights ask the shop before you get on the boat. You can buy a few things while on the boat too. Let me start off by saying..... WHAT AN AWESOME TRIP!!!! I went with a party of 8 guys and had a good time, from the delicious food "pastrami burger" to the friendliness of the staff! Everything was on point! The cook/ master Chef Sunny is cool as the day is long and serves up the coldest beer I've ever tasted. I believe all of us caught our limit of fish. If your thinking of taking some time off of work and doing some fishing, this is the boat to be on! Thank you very much for allowing us to relax and have a good time!! SIX STARS!!! Not terrible. They do a 2 for 1 deal, so that's nice. They found the fish. I've been on better boats, though. The crew is comically cocky. If someone made a parody movie about fishing, these folks would be stars. read more

Fishing not great, feel like they purposely didn't put us on structure until the end and then they said wrapping it up just when it was getting good and everyone was bringing up lings but only 2 keepers. Anyway deckhand acted very rude which makes no sense because They get tipped for being helpful. Anyway the cook and the young deckhand who I believe is the captains son were both very nice but unfortunately hands down the worst charter I've been on yet. read more

Worst experience fishing in my entire life. Couldn't pay me to go back on this boat. It was too crowded the crew was rude and they were no help during tangles with people who did not know what weights to use. It was truly a nightmare. read more

Worst fishing boat ever!!! Most rude cook, crew are busy fishing for themselves. Their priority is not customers.

Do not go on this boat. My boyfriend and I went and caught nothing even worth keeping. The crew was horrible, the deck hands were no where to be found and my boyfriend did their jobs for them he spent most the time untangling everyones lines on the boat and getting everyone's fish off the hooks for them. The guy working in the galley was very rude the whole time. We stayed in the same dead spots for far too long going in circles and the boat was so crowded you got tangled every time you dropped down. They didn't have enough bait, with hours left of the trip we were down to bits and pieces of squid and then ran out. Not to mention the fish counts are highly inaccurate. Go on the coral sea out of Santa Barbara it's a much better experience. read more

Been out to a few boats from the Channel Island Sportfishing dock. Been on the Aloha Spirit, Pacific Islander, Coral Sea, Gentleman. So far, the Gentleman is by far the worse boat. The day I went, I would say 2/3 of the boat are beginners. This is not good if you are a veteran and looking to get fish. You'll end up getting tangled with a lot of newbies. They will drop their line before the skipper positions the boat and they never listen to his instructions. This will become a tangled mess or they will hook up before you do since they drop it first while you're trying to follow directions. Another negative is a mate by the name of Jeff. He's rude, bumps and hits people to get them out of the way when he needs to do something and is too in your face with his jokes, etc. I expected some professionalism from the crew since I've been to many top notch boats on their fleet where the mates always try to help and and are extremely friendly. Jeff for some reason was not friendly and did not deliver with a smile. Must be disgruntled or something since we were not catching that day. All in all, don't think I'll go back to this boat. Will probably stick with Aloha Spirit for my day trips. One thing I will have to give props to is the skipper. We were not catching much but he tried his best to put us on the fish. Moving around a lot, trying different methods to get us a bite. It beats sitting on a single spot all day and not getting bit. Some skippers will do this to save on gas but the skipper on the Gentleman was trying. read more

Gentlemen?? Hardly!! Worst experience ever! I have charted several times out of Ventura and this was our first and last time out of Channel Islands. The crew was VERY rude and inexperienced, not to mention the kitchen over charged us by hundreds then laughed about it and still had the nerve to ask for tip!! read more

DON'T GO OUT ON THE GENTLEMAN!! Wow! My husband and 11 year old son have always gone out on the Speed Twin and have always come home with great stories about the crew, fishing etc... Today they went out on Gentelman. They came home with a totally different story. They said the crew was rude, unhelpful and smoked continually to point where the flying ash left burn marks on their arms. Our son was very excited about catching his largest fish (8.5 lb link cod) which won him the jackpot. However, the crew did not take his photo or appear excited...what they did was aggressively explain how the tips were expected to be 30%-50% and ask him how much he was going to tip. read more

Typical fishing boat....but the dude with a rat tail who checked us in was a total ASSHOLE! The captain really tried to fun some fish but it was kind if a slow day. The price was about average $65 to get on, plus a license plus gear rental. I'm looking for big game not perch so I'm giving this place a 3/5. The dickhole who checked us in kinda ruined my experience taking this from a 4/5 to 3/5. It was a nice boat ride, really pretty, the rest if the crew was fantastic!
