Spent $45 on a spool of invisx and had an employee spool it onto my reel. instead of using the machine, he loosely cranked it on by hand. when fishing with it for the first time, I got nothing but backlashes. when i tried to pull it out, I found that the line hadn't even been tied down to the spool and was a complete mess at the bottom. Whole spool ended up a mess and had to be removed. didnt even get a full day of fishing with it before it got destroyed. Wasted $45 on the line and had to cut my day short and drive hours back home because of the negligence in spooling my reel. 0/5 stars. read more

I've lived in Ventura 55+ years. My grandparents lived in the Ventura Keys. Their good friends and neighbors had a dock which we had unlimited access to throughout the 70's and 80's. Caught countless fish back then. Besides that, never had the patience to learn the art of catching, so I lost interest pretty quickly. My grandfather, father and brother all loved to fish. Not sure they appreciated taking me when they'd go fish the streams in Ojai. As an adult, ripping a living creature out of the water didn't really appeal to me. I'll eat fish all day every day. Go figure. I would love to catch a yellowfin though. That being said, haven't spent much time in Eric's shop. I have leaned on him for his expertise though, bend his ear and have him educate me. Why pretend to know something I know little about???? Eric has always been more than willing to share his knowledge and help when I've reached out. Came into Eric's as a complete noob and every single person in the shop from other customers to Eric himself were the most friendly and welcoming people into a community ever. I needed a "budget" surf rod setup for perch/halibut and I got the most rad setup ever from Eric for such a reasonable price and everyone helped me choose lures/plastics/weights and it just really leaves a smile on my face knowing I can hit up Eric's with any questions I have. I walked in to this tackle shop and when asked what can they help me with I asked for a good and cheap combo fishing pole and right away I got what I needed for under $100 and not to mention when I asked for bait for pier fishing I thought they would show me the basic bait such as squid, anchovies, or sardines but they gave me lug worms and let me tell you that's the best bait you can use. read more

I love this place! I came here today to get a funny stocking stuffer for my daughter who absolutely loves rubbery fish lures, and when I told the guy working the counter about the stocking stuffer he went out of his way to help me find the exact lures! My daughter isn't into fishing, and in fact she won't even eat fish because she loves them so much but she expressed on her Facebook about how much she loves those cute rubbery fishing lures so... I snuck out and got several and we all can't wait for her to open up her gifts. Went in to see about getting an appropriate rig for surf fishing as we were staying a few days at Emma Woods SB. Ask if he could sell me a decent rod and reel for $100 or less. Totally hooked me up! Eric asked what kind of tackle I had and told him I had nothing and had no idea what I needed. He put line on the reel, sold me some egg weights, beads, hooks and swivels. Showed me how to set up a "Carolina Rig" (I'm a fly fisherman) and suggested lug worms for bait. Gave me some pointers on fishing the shore and out the door I went. Friendly service, good local knowledge and no up-sell. I will definitely be back in the future. BTW, had a lot of fun fishing, caught several perch, a shark and some big mother of something that was pealing line off my reel and finally snapped me off. It was a blast. read more

I spent the weekend in Ventura surf fishing. I wanted some local intel, so I headed over to Eric's Tackle. I was greeted by Eric when I walked in the door. The place was well stocked, and reminds me of an old school hardware store. It's obviously a favorite of the locals as many of them came in to see Eric, and he knew most of them by name. Eric was more than willing to share his local knowledge with me and showed me a few places to try my luck at, using Google Earth. This place is great. I wanted to thank Eric's tackle shop for their great customer service. I ordered a couple Calstars online from them because I could not find them up here in NorCal. I was told that the Calstar gfgr 800xl was back ordered by more than one person at my local shops and would be impossible to get. I came in to purchase a couple of rods to fish off the rocks. They had rod combos for $40 bucks. The rods worked out however, the sales guy was consumed with his conversation he was having with someone else the entire time we were there. They do have a pretty good selection of lures.
