If you're in the west side of Houston, this park is by far the biggest area of protected wildlife, forest, bike/jog trails, outdoor shooting range, touring helicopter helipad, fishing, bird watching, taking pictures... Large park with paved and unpaved trails on the west side of Houston. Located between Katy and the loop, George Bush park is located south of the freeway and is a vast floodplain with a continuous multi use trail that is accessible to cyclists and runners/walkers. It's also connected to the Terry Hershey trail system and is next to a shooting range as well as some outdoor parks on the south side. This park is best used for cyclists and there are long stretches of pretty exposed trail that will get hot in the sun. There is more of a shaded portion of the park on the west side but the trail quality is also a bit below average in that portion. For walkers, this would be a fairly boring trail that is mostly out of the shade; Terry Hershey would be the recommended trail in that regard due to the greenery. The parking lots here are pretty unsafe on the west side; the best one is in the middle of the park once you go north from Westheimer or the parking lot next to the police station on Barker Clodine. The highway 6 parking lot / Briar Forest lot is not recommended due to break ins. read more

I think of this park as more of a trail..especially the part that runs parallel to highway 6. Great for biking as it is quite long and feeds into Terry Hershey. A long walk or run is also great here. There is a paved and unpaved path. I appreciate that this park isn't usually crowded as some of the others inside the loop. It's definitely great for nice long quiet time. I usually start in one of the lots off highway 6 by Memorial or Briar Hills but there is also a lot further west behind the West Oaks Mall. I wouldn't recommend for sports or picnics. read more

Love this park. I finally found the walking/bike trail and it's really great. Lots of nature to see. It's a pretty long trail, I turned around at 2.5 to complete 5 miles. The walking trail is on barker cypress and westheimer. Just keep going after the traffic light. I really enjoyed my walk, only downside is the shooting center is very near so you can hear all the shots, I'm sure the wild life there is affected by the loud noise. Other than that, enjoy your walk or bike ride! read more

First I'd like to start off by saying that this trail seems fine for cyclists. With that being said this trail is in between a shooting range and a remote controlled airfield so it is very loud. Virtually no animals or birds when you start the trail. The trail is muddy and surrounded by murky swamp waters that clearly flood and dry over when it rains. It has a very strong smell of mildew and that is for the first half mile. Once you get to the bridge it gets better but the bayou is muddy and still you hear the airplane park in the distance which I'm sure is why we saw zero birds. At the end of the long bridge we finally saw a pack of egrets sitting on the tree branches lining the water and a few turtles out sunbathing but that's about it. I wouldn't recommend this park for people walking, or people with kids because most of it is not shaded. read more

I really like this park because of it's paved trails and long distance. It's one of the few places where you can train without worrying about cars hitting you since it's composed of mostly public running/biking trails with just two small sections with light street traffic. When riding or jogging alone, the last thing you want is to get hit by a car. I really like taking my road bike here. The route that I take is approximately 25 miles round trip. It starts off next to a gas station on Hwy 6 and ends at Fry road. The terrain is mostly flat but can be very windy. You can easily average a speed of 18-20 mph throughout the entire route if you are a beginner. The route can be scenic on a nice day, but I can imagine it to be very hot during the summer because of the lack of trees for shade. TIPS: -Stay hydrated and wear sun screen! -Be courteous to other riders and joggers. Let them know you are passing and pass on the left. -There are no restrooms unless you park at the soccer field. read more

If you are new to the park, then I'd suggest follow the map. Its easy to get lost here. The park is all spread out and there are no appropriate signs to guide you. First time I went during summer and second was this last February. Both the times, I saw flooding in several areas in the park. I'd rather not want my family to be exposed to unwanted infectious organisms that may have developed in the floodwater; specially during this pandemic. Nevertheless, its a large park and plenty of open space. Offers many soccer fields, hiking/biking trails, kid's playground etc. On my first visit, I was just driving through the area, so dint check the map or anything. I had to make several rounds and due to lack of proper signage I couldn't find the bike trails and I was second guessing if I'm at the right kids playground. There's plenty of open fields. May be due to its vastness, I felt little secluded at times. Not really the park for my interests. read more

It floods a lot. Like, any rainstorm that comes through the katy/Houston area will cause major problems for those who made plans to visit the park! With that being said, when it's NOT flooded it's a very chill park. It's not super gorgeous or scenic like most parks but it's mostly a running/biking type of park. They have soccer fields, baseball fields, a HUGE playground (visible to see by the intersection) and even a dog park! The dog park can be busy at times but it's a very well loved park! My dog loved the multiple water ponds to splash around in! They have an outdoor shooting range as well but I have never personally been so I can not review that. Overall, if you're looking for a good park to get some exercise I recommend this park for sure!! PS- lots of mosquitos after it rains and there are snakes so be careful! read more

So as far as George Bush Park goes this place is huge. But this review is directed at the address that is listed. If you follow this address using a GPS it will put you in a parking lot next to a gun range. If you go towards your right as you enter you can go along the reservoir for miles! The path on the side is so smooth. I am constantly looking for secluded paths to ride my road bike in road like conditions. The closest to this point was Terry Hershey Park, but there are way too many blind curves. Also I tried reaching this park through Terry Hershey Park but was never able to get past Eldridge. Anyways after much frustration I decided just to throw the bike back on the rack and drive to George bush and ride. Yes the paths are boring and not very scenic, it's super flat and not many trees or wildlife at all. But thats exactly what I was looking for. These paved trails are the most pristine I have ever rode on. There isn't a lot of people out here so you can really pick up the pace. Since there isn't many blind areas you can see people coming way far in advance. The path is wide enough to comfortable fit 2 bikes side by side. From this address I was able to travel for 10+ miles in one direction and then come back. My new favorite ROAD BIKE trail. Also there is a skate park located along the path, off of I-10. Random. I'll be back again to get the exact address. And there I saw a family sliding down the hills of the reservoir with cut up boxes. Looked kind of ghetto but A LOT of fun. read more

This park is pretty huge (I think 7 or 8 miles long) and connects to Terry Hershey Park. Went here to bike the trail along the bayou and it was awesome. The roads are smooth and quiet - you won't see any cars around. There are a few bridges, but the terrain is generally quite flat and uniform. I found it extremely relaxing to bike for miles without seeing the cars, concrete, and pollution that is Houston. I even saw an armadillo and two snakes! Definitely watch the road for snakes. They can blend in with the crack repair lines. And I am told that you can also see deer and wild pigs on occasion. This park was definitely surprised me as being green haven in the greater Houston area. read more

When I'm traveling I like to do my morning jog in a local park. I enjoy doing as the locals do. This park wasn't far from my hotel so I gave it a shot. I looked online at the park map and found two places to park. The one at the north was much faster and easier to get to for me. There weren't specific directions so I just ventured out and tried to find it. No dice. Anything that looked like it might have been parking was gated off under construction. I didn't see a trail entrance either. I knew this was a bad sign, but I decided to try to find the "main" parking area as indicated by others and by the map. A 15 minute drive later, and I think I found the second lot. Completely underwater. I wasn't super impressed with the park as I drove around. It is very flat and not even many trees to speak of. There are HUGE open areas which is probably nice for the activities that require it and don't get much love from the smaller parks. But for those of us looking for the trail, I really couldn't find any signs or anything indicating where it might be in this expanse. Also, the park backs up to a mall and numerous strip malls. It feels just as manufactured. So I gave up. Now I have a 20 min drive back to my hotel, muddled with traffic, because the main road through the park is used by morning commuters. Just not your normal park. Run fail. read more

Great spot for get togethers...family reunions or professional gatherings as in my case. We booked one of the pavilions for our company's fall festival. It was free standing and we had the entire section of that park to ourselves. Probably more so cause it was weekday. Good amount of parking, the sun shaded under the pavilion (keep in mind it was fall but still hot, but not summer time hot). It was lots of rooms for our activities which included a spaced out relay race with apple bobbing, ring tossing, pumpkin bowling, bean bag toss, croquet...as well as space for a big inflatable jousting thing. Thank God, I didn't have to use the facilities so I can't advise on cleanliness. The pavilions being so spaced out is a good thing though harder to make sure everyone comes to the right one...but otherwise perfect spot to hold outside events, plenty of tables and space. read more

I decided to do a long run here, 17 miles, because I was tired of running on the track. It light. It was a great car for that! It had everything I would have liked except for water fountains along the way. I had a friend that told me there were, and they were not that many which is a bummer but it was a decent trail. Quite long, gators and pretty birds along the way in the nature areas,, and very quiet. The shooting range threw me off but is out-of-the-way. Definitely a good spot to run, Probably a trail that leaves more towards biking as it's very long for a run but probably decently short for a bike ride. read more

This park-cum-Army Corps of Engineers floodplain is huge. Features include a shooting range, a long but mosquitoey paved bike and jogging trail, lots of mud, herons, and many pavilions. There's an equestrian area (which actually gets a lot of use, so saddle up and come on down), ponds and fishin' holes, a playground, soccer and baseball fields, and lots of speeding traffic. I've tried hard to love this park, but it epitomizes everything I dislike about Houston - traffic, long drives (it takes about 10 minutes to drive across the park at a good rate), mosquitoes and other bugs, mud, and no real sense of purpose. I appreciate the green space, but I really find that this park is only usable during the winter when the mosquitoes have died down. read more

Tip 1: If you're looking to go on a trail run or cycle, the Noble Road Parking Lot is 1600 S Texas 6. It is right next to a Valero station. It's a small parking lot but only 0.1 mile distance from the trail. For trail runners, there are multiple options to take a long run on. I like it as it's a nice break from the Memorial Loop. This park is the epitome of Houston. The park has two major roads running through it and is designed so that you have to either drive your car to get into the park or risk walking/biking on the one foot shoulder of the busy surrounding roads. Once you're inside the park there are no sidewalks so once again you'll need a car to get around. The hiking trails don't circle the park like in normal parks. Instead you have to drive to the walking trail which oddly is not circular and only covers about 1/3 of the park. I'm guessing someone in the oil and gas industry designed this park. Perhaps it was George Bush himself. Despite the logistical difficulties the park presents to its neighbors who just want to walk to a park and go for a jog, the park gets three stars. There are some decent facilities and it seems to be maintained well. read more

Not really sure why all the high reviews. If you're simply looking for a place with a good path to get your bike or jog in for the day and nothing more, then sure, it will work. But that's all you get. If you like something more scenic, this is not it. I would only use this place if i lived right next to it. My wife and I drove way out to see it, and were like, "oh." This park looks like a wasteland, made even worse by the drought. It's mostly flat grassland with some planted trees along the path. Plenty of power lines and highway noise to remind you you're still in the city. Nothing to see and enjoy here. Only use as a means of exercise. read more

Can you believe after living 6 years near this place that I've only recently discovered the awesome-ness of George Bush Park? This massive park got my attention when I signed up for a free 5k run that was sponsored by the Houston Wellness Project. I came to George Bush Park a couple weeks before the race to train on their jogging trails. I was quite impressed with this place. The park has several features including run/bike trails, picnic areas, playgrounds for the kiddos, dog park, and much more. I have yet to cover all the of the park. I've only been to the places on west side (along Westheimer Parkway). But from what I've seen, the park itself is beautiful...tall trees, several waterways, pretty scenery. The park also has cabin-like buildings that house restrooms and water fountains. With a park this enormous, it is fairly easy to get lost; so, I suggest always bring a buddy with you. I love running at this park...There's just something special about the warm sunshine, crisp air, and the smell of trees when you're running that makes you feel relaxed. I've also been to the playground area, which has lots of jungle gyms for the kids and benches for us old folks. I liked how the park had a couple patrol officers around the area...it made me feel a bit safer. Anyhoos, if you live on the west side of town, do yourself some justice and take a walk in the park! read more

Thanks George for getting us a park! This is a nice area to road bike that isn't too far outside of town. When solo biking, I enjoy trails like this that are closed to traffic. It doesn't have any hills, but it does have a nice variety of surroundings - starting in a more grassy area, and transitioning to the Bayou. It is a really good winter solo ride when it's windy; it's more challenging then. You will usually see some wildlife along the way too - deer, birds, maybe even snakes. read more

We moved to the area from Spring a while back and have found the park to be like an extension of our backyard. We walk the trails with our dogs and wander around a really large field with our dogs and throw the ball as far as we can see. It's toward the end of the summer so the Mosquitos are still out but not as bad as they could be. The trails are paved and are wide enough for both joggers and walkers. Everyone we have come across has been really kind. Our dogs love it! We haven't been yet to the dog parks but we have seen them from the road and they look well maintained. read more

For the cyclists looking for an easy entrance, try parking at the spaces off of Highway 6 where George Bush Park intersects with Terry Hershey Park. I stumbled upon this by accident after biking from Eldridge/Memorial. It's a nice long stretch, though nothing pretty to look at -- just a lot of dead, yellowed grass and no shade. Good for morning rides and probably not at 10 am when I was out with the sun dead-on in my eyes. read more

I rushed her to the vet hospital where her blood work was not too good. Needed to add a dose of antivenim. She stayed over night at the hospital and hoping for recovery. Please Beware. Great place to run. I'm from Baton Rouge here for a week. Found the park on google maps and decided why not. I took Westheimer west to S Barker Cypress Road, took a right and went to the end to the Equestrian Parking area (what it is labeled on the park map pdf, downloadable from the park site, just google it.) From that parking lot I ran west towards the soccer park. Great narrow paved strip that winds through the woods and the boardwalk/bridge was a very nice surprise. About a mile in you come to the boardwalk and it goes for a hundred yards or so over a canal, very scenic. lots of rain had passed through so there was some standing water covering the asphalt that was unavoidable, running in 4 inches of water for a couple hundred yards will get you pretty soaked. That part was all in one stretch not far from the parking lot the it was dry the rest of the way....also there was a high water warning sign so i was warned. Very safe feeling, enough people on the trail to know it is well used and didn't feel alone out in the middle of nowhere. PS It took me 45 minutes in pretty heavy evening (6pm) traffic on a monday to get there from Westhchase/Beltway 8 area. read more

Our Family held our 2nd Family Reunion picnic at George Bush Park Pavilion #3. We had an Awesome experience because there are plenty(37) of picnic tables under a Big long pavilion. Also, the location was a mile away from Kroger's, Walmart, and several locations to get bags of ice or whatever. There is a water sprocket and electric outlets at the location. Of course being Houston, the heat was insane. So, we rented 4 big industrial fans to make the pavilion area bearable. My family played volleyball, softball, and had a live band set up for relatives who were musicians to jam. Everything worked without any extra need for generators. Two officers had to be assigned to us per the park rules for having a live band. They were very cool and didn't crowd us or be on our heels. And most importantly, the bathroom was very close. And oh yeah, plenty of CLOSE parking right at the location. I highly recommend this location. Some useful items to bring:extension cords and multi outlets, phone chargers, fans, water hose, off(bug repellent) spray, sun screen, volleyball net, and other field activities. And Last but NOT LEAST, the ladies in the office who you have to call to reserve the park were VERY NICE AND PROFESSIONAL. I really appreciated how friendly and patient they were. Great park! After attending the great amazing race, we found a shady area to picnic. Lots of wide open green space, recreational amenities, and shade. Easy parking. This park is huge and buried inside residential areas. Lucky them! Will be returning. read more

Nature?!? In the Katy/Houston area?!?!? It appears I have been wrong in my unfair judgement of the area of their lack of nature trails and escapes from the drudgery of suburban life. This is one of my favorite new places to run (I used to drive all the way into Memorial Park so I didn't have to run around town). Plenty of shade and scenery to help keep my runs interesting. I also take my road bike here. Its a great place for my doing BRICK work outs for my triathlon. Disclaimer#1: I run from the FFPS fields out towards the Cop Shop off Highway 10 and I have never seen a water fountain or bathroom. This has presented a problem to me numerous times. Make sure you pack your own water and TP if you are worried you won't make it. Disclaimer #2: a 4 star park in the months of Sept/Oct-April/May. Once summer weather hits and there is standing water, you WILL be eaten alive by mosquitos or suffocate from the heavy humidity found amongst the tall grasses and trees. I would knock it down a star or two due to the misery of the experience during the summer months. read more
