I love everything I've tried. I grew up on Bishops and gourmet takeaway and I'd day George's has many items they had and very delicious. I've had others that are way off. We're the hell have I been?? I'm so upset at my self for not coming here sooner. My wife has been here before and loved the place but really loved talking to the ladies that run it and from going there today my self I can now see why my wife loved both. What a truly AMAZING hidden gem in the area. I don't like saying its a hidden gem bz it's been in the area for so many years. Walking in I felt I was walking into a part of these owners passions, there own ways of life and dam they eat/cook great. This specialty market from what I gather has been a premier leader in the area for both dishing our fresh, flavorful food and distribute items as well. So I agree with Matthew A. To be totally honest I don't know or have not seen a lot of items they sell mines the already prepared food items. So I'm not qualify to properly rate those items. I was surprised at how big George's Bakery was when I finally got there. It looks as though that this store may have been an old supermarket back in the day, as the space is that large. (IGA? Purity Supreme?) However this family has fun George's Bakery since 1958! Long time! I know Methuen, but I had to use my GPS to find it. It is THAT hidden. Some of my take home finds: -Imported Greek Feta Cheese $4.99lb -spinach and Feta flat bread pita pizzas $3.25 -Huge bag of freshly made (still warm!) pita bread ($1.49) This price Wed & Sundays only!) Huge deal. -Pita Chips (Buy 1 get 1 Free!) -Falafel (premade 8 pieces, w/. sauce $3.99 -Coconut Macaroons It appears that most baked and ready made items are baked in house. Also a number of items carry the "George's Bakery" name so they must also distribute out to local locations. 'Great browsing here. All kinds of fun and foreign items to try and see. George's Bakery is one of our favorites. If you buy pita bread, take the time and read the ingredients label. Chances are that you won't know what, let alone be able to pronounce most of the things on that label. This is not the case from George's, their pita is just flour, yeast, water, a tiny bit of salt, and is usually very fresh. They also have a fantastic selection of pastry, spinach & squash pies, the most addictive baba ganoush, Lebanese salads, olives, and ingredients. Lastly, the people that work there couldn't be nicer or go more out of their way to be helpful. George's is a great place to go to stock up on fantastic middle-eastern specialty food. George's has been here for ages, they are the masters of pita bread and their variety of flavored tahani is amazing, let's see what I have eaten here so far. Meat pies with beef bomb, spinach pies bomb, baked pita bread with cheese, they come 3 in a pack for $5. They are a good size , so 1 will fill you up but I usually eat all three. The baba ganoosh yes I forgot about that made here and it's really fresh, hummus too. They have pre made sandwiches by the counter or you can call ahead to place an order, falafel, kibby wrap, chicken shawarma are the ones I have eaten here. Gosh am I old! I've been going to George's since it was on Hampshire Street in Lawrence. Way back then, it was the only place to get Lebanese food. Now they've moved around the corner to Methuen, expanded and gained some competition. Although I do find their bread a bit on the thin side, there are definitely reasons to come to George's. A nice fresh container of baklava would be a very good reason indeed! Their prices are reasonable and I always end up leaving with at least one bag fulla food. George's has more variety in the grocery and frozen/refrigerated foods sections than Korbani's. That said, they have a smaller fresh deli selection i.e. I don't find the quality of the olive or cheese selection to be as good. If you are in the market for a hookah or some decorative items for your home, they can be found here. Some of the other pastries here can be quite good but check on the freshness before buying. Oh baby. I usually have to go to C-Mart in Chinatown or Battambang in Lowell to be this lost. Shelves of hard core Mediterranean goodies, rose water, Bulgar wheat, cheeses, nuts, spices, and mostly, things I couldn't even guess. I found Almaza beer at George's! And tons of homemade stuff too. Packages of things with everything written in Greek, and translated into Arabic. I think. It's a tough place to find if you're not familiar with Methuen, but shop here even once and you'll find your way back. read more

It is nice to go with a local when you visit a shop like this because they can give you the low down on what to buy ... or not. I did not buy anything today, but my companion did and shared with me. She bought a "cookie" called a simboosik. The best way I can describe it is to compare it to a mamoul cookie but with walnuts, sugar and (I think) cinnamon. Trying to do some mediterranean cooking? Need some pomegranate molasses, greek style yogurt, or halva? Look no further. There is so much merchandise packed into George's that I'd 1) be surprised if you didn't find what you were looking for and 2) be surprised if you didn't find something that you didn't know you were looking for. This is a fun place to go for inspriation in "trying new things." I don't know what half of the items here are supposed to be used for, but boy will it be fun learning. The staff are very helpful and patient, and don't mind all of the stupid questions that I inevitably ask. In addition to the dry-goods portion of the store, they have a refrigerated / frozen foods case and fully stocked deli for those looking to get a full meal. The tables out front don't have the best view (the parking lot doubles as the Methuen City Schools bus barn) but they are available. They even have geographically appropriate music CDs! Went there on May 24th because they were recommended for their hookah selections. I was there at 1:30PM. Walked in, they had a lot up high out of reach. Woman behind the counter was on her cell phone, then a lady from the back peeked out and saw me, went outback again. No one up at the register where the Shisha was. This is not just a Lebanese bakery, but a pretty sweet Middle Eastern market as well. Any time my family comes to visit me in CA I have them load up on zatah, sim sim, meat pies and cookies. The spinach and lamb pies are the best things on EARTH, and their makaroons are almost as good as mine (note: these are not the wimpy french coconut "macaroons," but the Lebanese kind made with anise and walnuts). I LOVE this place! I've been going here since they were a small bakery at a little place in Lawrence & my Dad would take me every Saturday to get fresh Syrian bread, Lebanese cheese, & Arabic pastries (samboosik is STILL my fave!). This store is now my go to place for homemade hummus, tabouli, meat & spinach pies, & some items I was fond of growing up in a Middle Eastern home. The ONLY reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the friendliness of the place is gone. The young girls they have at the counter really are rude...to the point I had to correct one for being rude to my Mom. (NOT ok to be disrespectful to your elders). Once I found out about this store I stopped purchasing pita bread from regular grocery stores. Their bread compared to regular grocery stores bread got 10/10. It doesn't have selection of dates but again they get high score 9/10 on the taste of the dates they have. They have great tasting fresh selected middle eastern food (like tabbouleh, kebbe, hummus, ...) and even I didn't taste their fresh baked pies but I assume they taste good as they look so good and similar to what I find in my middle eastern origin country. They have selection of good desserts and sweets freshly made as well as packaged. Great selection of spices and you can get what you need by weight .. and their spices are mostly of high quality. There are many other things in the store that I couldn't include in this short review but in overall it got 9/10. read more

I use to go to this bakery when it was on Hampshire St in Lawrence MA It was a small bakery but now it is a full grocery market I have enjoyed everything that I have purchased there whether it was syrian bread, kaak ,lima beans with rice,grape leaves,or even there packaged walnuts. One of my co-workers recommended this place to us. In Fall River, there are couple good Lebanese places for their meat pies and I didn't know George's until my co-worker told me about it. This place is more of a store plus bakery. Although the selection of the fresh baked goods (pies) are not as extensive, but they have a lot of desserts and other products such as stuffed Olives and many others. Being an Italian woman my love for food is in my DNA. With that said Lebanese dishes are by far my favorite apart from my moms home cooking. I have been searching everywhere for authentic good quality food that I can take home and enjoy. Well let me tell you, finding George's Bakery was like hitting the lottery. I have had hummus from all over the world and I kid you not, George's was hands down the best I've ever tasted. I had no idea what the sweet bread was but once I took my first bite I inhaled it like it was the last thing I'd ever eat. Everything from the bakery was delicious and fresh. I live far from the bakery and would not mind making that journey every week if I had too that's how good it is. I am a huge foodie and finding this place is a huge game changer! And what's even better is it's a small family owned business so you get that homemade taste and touch to every product. Supporting small businesses is a major plus during these unprecedented times! Zero costumer service. They didnt let my 5 years old use the bathroom and they sent us to the pharmacy across parking lot which it was close at the time. She had to go in corner of parking lot. I will never go there anymore. When I bought 2 pastries that were wrapped, I saw that they had moles. I emailed to the store about the problem and nobody did not care to reply to my email. Even, people told me that a lot of people will not go to that store anymore, because they still keep the food on the shelves when they are expired and not fresh. George's is truly a hidden gem! While the shelves are fully stocked with the ingredients for the perfect Mediterranean meal, I prefer the freshly made dishes to grab and go. Stuffed grape leaves, hummus, cucumber salad, kibbee, spinach pies... And don't forget the sweets! To top it all off, the store is clean and easy to navigate. Occasionally I find a rare product in western Mass that I would like to order more of. In April of 2012 I placed an order with this company, George's Bakery in Methuen, MA. They said the product was not available. I just got an email from them today, February 4, 2014, almost 2 years later that my order has been shipped. At first I said, who is this and what did I order? After a while I remembered. I also remembered that I had cancelled the order when they said the product was not available. Since I placed this order I have retired and this order of an expensive product, which I have found and bought elsewhere, is a hardship for me to pay for. Two years later they decide to take money from my bank account and send me something I cancelled! All I can think is they are a failing business and digging up anything they can charge people for. Stay away, they are not honest. They should have emailed me to see if I still wanted this, two years later. read more
