After moving back into Bridgeport, I decided to check out some of the local places that had a reputation for having good food. Also, for the places that I remember fondly, it has been interesting to check in on those that are still around to see how things have fared. George's is one of those places that always had a good reputation. Now, understand that this is fast food. We are not talking about any culinary masterpieces but, that said, I am going to discuss it within those realms as a lover of all types and levels of cuisine etc. So, I decided to try the gyros sandwich because I have heard they were very good. I had a craving for one and since Johnny O's, my fave fast food place in Bridgeport, does not have, I decided to call an order in to George's to get a gyros with everything on it and an order of fries well done (I specifically asked this of the nice woman that took my order and explained I like my fries crispy}. I was pretty excited as this was my first "cheat" meal at a fast food place in awhile. When I walked in, I noticed the place was clean looking and a straightforward looking place. Menu items posted neatly and clearly. The staff, from the moment I called and spoke to the woman on the phone, were nothing but courteous and nice. I was pleased and was really looking forward to the sandwich. After paying and heading home on this first day hovering around 100 degrees, I opened the bag so that I could plate the meal. I was surprised at the lack of "heft" to the sandwich and originally a bit disappointed at that. However, that was more me being in "glutton-mode" most likely. Though I do maintain the sandwich seemed small, it was certainly enough to get a good feeling of having eaten enough. The sandwich fixings were meager. One tomato and a few onion slices. The sauce was sparing and the meat did not include any crispy edges. After eating my first piece of the meat, I was underwhelmed by the flavor. It seemed almost non-existent. I continued to eat it and the taste was not bad, it just did not seem distinct like gyros meat normally does. It is hard to explain but it was not satisfying at all. I had an issue with my fries, however. I made it a point to ask for the fires to be "well done" etc. The portion was generous but the fries were half sort of well done and the other half were nowhere near being. Considering this was a "cheat" meal, I was really looking forward to enjoying. I was kind of surprised, since we talked about it on the phone, that this detail was grossly overlooked. You know, I am not sure when my next visit will be but based on the reviews that I have read here, and because the service was nice in terms of my interactions with the staff, I will give them another try in the future. Definitely the best no frills gyro joint that's been around for a long time. That being said, the staff, which appear to be family take a ton of pride in serving their customers and ensuring that the food is good and hot. Don't expect table service or dining music. Do expect gyros that are phenomenal and way better than Greek Town. The chicken strips are great and are a meal to themselves. You don't have to worry about parking, there's metered spots in front and non metered about 1/3 of a block away. Our family is working through the menu but every time we order we try a different soup. I always pay cash but it appears they take cards too. read more

I came to this place because I saw it on CB. The Chicken on Pita is AMAZING! Let me say this. This spot does not have enough recognition. Ive been living on the Southside for 5yrs now and have never heard of this spot. To go in here is a pleasure. Every woman in the place is drop dead gorgeous, so you're getting wonderful food thats made to order and you can care less about how long you wait because you just want to in an uncreepy like manner keep sneaking gazes at the women that are making your food. I'm going to go five stars for the neighborhood feel here, I've only been here a few times, however you could see the camaraderie between some of the customer's and the worker's. The haven't seen you in a bit... How's work... etc. It's a busy place and the service is upbeat and organized. I ordered a chicken pita, and some of the fried pickles, husband had a fish sandwich of some sort. Since the chicken takes a while on the grill, I was asked if I wanted the pickles as an appetizer, to which I thought was an excellent idea and usually a reserve for a regular sit down restaurant and not fast food. Which brings up a good point, they do serve up the standard fast food menu, hot dogs, beefs and all that, however if you're looking for a real good fresh salad or a chicken pita down up right, George's does that. Come hungry, portions are ample, they serve breakfast too. I'd call this place a fast diner, it's more than your typical fast food place. read more

A nice little restaurant/diner with some friendly servers. The prices are good and the portions aren't anything to sniff at. The food isn't as greasy as you'd think it would be, given the menu of items to choose from. I have to say - the gyros are rather good and one of the few places to find a good gyro in Bridgeport. I love watching the lamb on the roaster/spit and watching them shave off your meat fresh for your gyro when you order one. Plus, they've got the stool area for the real diner feel, booths and tables for a restaurant appeal, and the old-school video arcade games in the back that appeal to me! I'll come in for a pizza puff and a gyro and drop a quarter or two in a Pac-Man machine and then enjoy my grub! My only concern is that there's usually a group of neighborhood kids being loud and rowdy whenever I'm in there. I don't know if it's a coincidence (that I'm 6-for-6 on George's and rowdy kids at a booth) or there's just always a group of these kids in there, but I can't fault the place for their customers. read more

I love George's. The employees are amazing. The place is an institution in this area. I've had hot dogs, burgers, grilled cheese, fries, fountain drinks and strawberry milkshakes and they were all good exactly what I expected for the price...delicious. I generally like to customize my order and I've never had a problem. I like that everything is made to order and you can clearly see the kitchen. They have a steady clientele. I stopped by for a double cheese burger and fries which were both great if you're craving the junkiest of junk food. For less than $5 for both, I shouldn't have expected fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and onions on my burger. My burger had two thin beef patties, American cheese, sliced pickles, caramelized onions, and ketchup which all drowned out the flavor of the beef. The best part about George's is the chef/server. He is charming, warm, welcoming and knew the name and order of every regular that came through that door. If I lived by here in the hood, I'd be a regular too and figure out what my tastiest regular order will be! read more

My first choice for "American Food" in Bridgeport. There a higher quality fast food joint here, with a pretty good menu variety. Locally owned and run (RIP George), the people here are social and friendly, though their demeanor can sometimes come off as crass. It's just the Chicagoan in them! Their Cream of Chicken and Rice soup is pretty amazing, and I don't know if they make their BBQ sauce, but it's in a separate pump on the counter and it's great! If you want some greasy food before or after a Sox game, and it's completely before they close, go to George's! read more

This is going to be one of my new favorites, that's for sure. I went here looking for a good dinner and got the Hawk's special -- a gyros sandwich with fries and a soda, for less than $10! They definitely don't skimp on the meat, so that was great. I actually had a hard time finishing everything, so my husband had to help out. Their fried pickles are also rather tasty and inexpensive. The atmosphere is that of a casual diner. It's a no-frills kind of place that serves amazing food for a reasonable price. Workers are friendly and the food comes out pretty quickly. When in Bridgeport, do as my friend, Angelo. Mangiare, mangiare (fate grosso, if you're me and not careful!) Yesterday, "Ange" called and asked if he could host me for lunch; if I'd come down to Bridgeport. It was a gorgeous day, so I said I'd ride down along the lake (and hop off at 31st Beach, and it's 2 miles or so west to Halsted from there). George's was the pick of the day, for lunch. It's been there 35 years or so. And damn, I haven't had Italian Slurp n Burp this good, ever. My Italian Beef & Sausage combo arrived completely grease free, piled high on a non-soggy sausage roll. I ate every bit and want more, soon. Damn good thing I had biked 13 miles to get there and had to bike 13 miles back. Otherwise, I think I'd still be metabolizing that lunch, and this is almost 24 hours ago! read more

Let me preface this by explaining that I am a native New Yorker. I only moved to Chicago two months ago. I went to George's to get some hot dogs. And I am still confused and a little frightened by what happens to hot dogs in this city. Personally, I am used to a naked hot dog to which I add one or two condiments at most. Mustard, for example. Or chili. Or, if I'm feeling very saucy, chili AND cheese. I don't even know if this city HAS chili dogs. My point is, I got two hot dogs "with everything." And they were good, but they were still alien to me and I have no baseline for comparison. They were well-presented and all the ingredients appeared to be fresh and everything was cooked to the right consistency, so objectively, they were good hot dogs. But subjectively, I have no real baseline for comparison. I can't say how good or how bad they were compared to other hot dogs that have been buried under a pile of vegetables and condiments with an entire dill pickle spear in there to keep it company. So, take my opinion of the actual hot dogs with a grain of celery salt. Which, by the way, George's didn't seem to include. But, as I understand it, there's a big debate as to whether celery salt is necessary for a proper Chicago dog. And I don't even know what celery salt is. So I just mention it as a fact. If celery salt is a vital ingredient in your hot dog, I don't think they included it. What I can say is that it's a spacious, clean restaurant on south Halstead with a friendly staff. They make the food to order, they are quick, and they bring it to your table. The French fries are not amazing, but they are tasty enough. The hot dogs, I am not sure about, as I mentioned in the previous paragraph. And they have a whole lot of other foods available too. Burgers, tacos, gyros, the usual grilled fast-food made-to-order fare. It is also within convenient walking or biking distance of my apartment, but I realize that's probably not a useful quality for anyone who doesn't live in the same building as me. But maybe you live on a nearby street and this is helpful to know. The best part though is the prices. The food is really affordable and good value. Two hot dogs, french fries, and a can of soda or pop or whatever you people call it in Chicago for $5.50. Their other prices seem to be in the same ballpark. So a person can eat a good meal for under $10. read more

Wow, I totally forgot about George's. Shame on me! Small, quaint, local, dive-y - that's George's. It's a Bridgeport neighborhood establishment that has been satisfying my pizza puff craving for years. I used to live a few blocks away and there's not really anything bad to say about this place. The service is always friendly and they will come to recognize you if you're living in the 'hood or a regular customer. Food is insanely cheap and insanely delicious. A giant pop costs $1 (refills are free!) and almost every meal combo is under $5. Great Italian Beef, pizza puffs, hot dogs - you name it, it's good. Food is made when you order it so everything is piping hot and delicious. If you chose to dine in, the seating is kind of old and uncomfortable but it's almost all booths so you can't go wrong. There's a small bar area if you're more inclined to watch the cooks in action. I love this place for a quick dinner or a before/after Sox game stop. read more

I have been living in Bridgeport my entire life, and I just now discovered this place for a little afternoon pick me up. Everything is made fresh on the spot, the burger patties are thin - it is filling but won't give you a food coma or end up hating it for a while, the buns are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside - no place I have been to makes the buns like this, and the fries are fresh and crispy. The portions are great, they let you season your fries (i.e. salt, ketchup, etc.), and the prices are affordable. The staff is friendly, and they will personally hand you your food. You have the option of whether eating before you pay or paying before you eat. I am definitely coming back! read more

This is the best bang for your buck! Hits on the all the important hotdog stand food points - it's quick, price is great, quanity is substantial, quality is fresh and taste is fantastic. This place has never left me down and it continues to deliver. It is the very best hotdog & hamburger place you can ask for and always consistently hitting high marks across the board. Although their food is great, it's their Gyros that keep me so in love with them. They are much better than anything I tried including all the stands in Greektown. This place is awesome! A double cheeseburger meal at George's costs less than the same thing at McDonald's, but tastes ten thousand times better! The fried pickles are also great with a grilled ham and cheese. The Italian beef could DEFINITELY be split between two people, they put SO much meat on that sandwich. The employees are all very nice, the restaurant is very clean but comfortable and casual. Very fair prices for great quality food.
