There's a warmth here. And that's something even the snazziest of hotels can't promise. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy bougie hotels too, but this place has a story. The dry sauna and steam room were more than enough comfort, and while we couldn't enjoy the roof deck due to storms, it looked like the perfect place to chill. Our room was spotless, we had plenty of space, and the jacuzzi tub was the cherry on top. Breakfast is included, and the food from that kitchen was stellar. They had an entire separate vegan menu. I was super into the local kombucha and fermented hot sauce options, and the vegan French toast and tofu scramble were spot on. There are always snacks and beverages available around the clock, too. So fear not, my fellow snackers. As far as the vibe, let's just say the founder must have made randomness their full-time job. There is art all over the place, plus collections of all shapes and sizes. Two dozen antique cameras? Got it. 15 or so vintage thermoses on a shelf? Yep. Rock collections, statues, maps, and more? There is just stuff to look at EVERYWHERE. And I mean that in the best way possible. My wife booked us a little one-night getaway, and Ashley and the team made the whole thing a treat. Smooth sailing from start to finish, friendly, accommodating, and the room was our cozy little home away from home, even if only for a night. Completely walkable to all kinds of fun and shopping. Zero complaints. I can't say I've been to a place like Ray's before. It's a community. Just check the common rooms where you'll find board games, books about art and the neighborhood, and people just chilling out. It's unique, and we need more uniqueness these days. Ray's is the kind of place I love to recommend. Anyone can grab a hotel, but this type of visit is something much more memorable.

Very friendly staff and a quirky vibe - perfect for people who want something more relaxed. Breakfast is included and you order off a menu they give you. Very good! They also have free snacks! We were in the Skylight Room which I liked - access to the roof deck, felt pretty private. You do hear the kitchen though I. The morning, but there is an additional door to close if needed. It's sort of like staying at a friend's house great for those who want to be in a classic Chicago neighborhood instead of downtown. Would recommend!

When I booked the room it said that it included free private parking at the location... less then 24hrs hours before check in I get an email stating ( there are 3 parking spots that's first come first serve and parking on road in front of house) ok well that should be put on the description before u book the hotel cause I would've never booked with them if I'd known u had to park over 2 miles from the hotel... We got their at 3:11pm check in was 3pm - we got there and no parking for over 2 miles away from house on the side of a road in a sketchy area... We had no way of knowing about this until we arrived because their description was a lie and not detailed enough... They didn't say they had 6 rooms but only 3 parking spaces... We had 2 large suitcases, a large duffel bag. And a large cooler that they expected us to walk over 2 miles with to the house to check in... We never made it in the building - after about a half hour of calling and messaging with no response from owners we left to book another hotel over 20 minutes further and at another 200.00 in costs... we had no way to cancel the room backseat we couldn't get ahold of anyone so they said because we didn't cancel they are kept 80.00 of the 94.05 we paid to book the room stating well we said parking was first come first serve.... YEAH LESS THEN 24HRS BEFORE OUR RESERVATION WHEN IT WAS ALREADY TO LATE TO CANCEL THE ROOM.... SCAM SCAM SCAM WITH NO RESPONSE OWNERS STAY AWAY FROM THIS HOUSE - It completely ruined me from ever staying at a bed and breakfast and definitely check out all their other bad reviews...

So rare nowadays 4) Good breakfast included 5) NO Fox "News" in the lobby 6) Recycling receptacles 7) Short walk to good Ethiopian, Cambodian, Thai restaurants 8) 20 minute walk to Independent Spirits, look them up for wine tasting nights. Then it's a 30 minute walk back. The negatives, as always, are relative. 1) Short staffed (took a while to get checked in), though the staff they do have are competent, helpful, and polite. 2) The nearby Sri Lankan restaurant is NOT Sri Lankan (not the hotels fault but I thought I would warn you before you got your hopes up) 3) Valet parking is outrageous. But typical for Chicago. 4) WiFi is slow as Molasses in Winter

Many other reviewers have covered the pros and cons in exhaustive detail, so I'll just add my personal experience as a Texan who doesn't do a lot of walking from hotels (many of ours are in suburbia or resort style where you'd have to walk 15 minutes to even get off property). I was in Chicago for a get together of coffee geeks, and this came up as a property only a mile and half from the host's condo. It was clean and nice all around, from the common spaces to the room, and I had no complaints. The wifi was fairly well behaved for me for what I was doing (mostly surfing and light videos). The bed was comfortable. The shower was hot and had plenty of pressure. It was well lit. The staff that I interacted with were pleasant and warm. My checkin and checkout processes were easy (the latter particularly so, did it all on the app). Some complained about noise; I barely noticed it. I felt safe walking at night. It was easy for my rideshare drivers to get in and out of. Bottom line, it was well priced, well placed, and well appointed, a nicely maintained property.

My room was held together with caulking, extension cords and power strips plugged into other power strips, and a random brass plate covering a hole in the wall. The smoke detector was also covered with a plastic bag and tape. 2. Registration and check-in is by email and text, and management cannot be bothered to take phone calls. So instead they inundate the guest with text messages and emails (a total of 15 from the property to me, including texts from two different phone numbers) regarding the reservation, registration, and check-in. I tried to check in using a text message that had only the door code but couldn't find my room because you book your room by name (e.g., Venetian Room) but when you arrive, the rooms are numbered. So I texted manager Ashley, who ended the text with "Considering 99% of people don't have problems maybe it's not us that's the problem." Never before in my life have I have been talked to like that by someone (supposedly) in the hospitality industry. Ashley is passive aggressive and has no business working in any customer-facing position, much less in the hospitality business. And apparently she's rather immature, because she's not learned that having to have the last word is not a becoming quality, especially with guest when her intent is incite and/or insult them further. I would rather sleep on the streets of Chicago than stay at Villa Toscana again. Do you yourself a favor and stay at a real hotel in Chicago.
