I didn't stay at Harvey House but had made a reservation to stay there for a visit to Chicago. Very bad experience. First, they made me put a $350 deposit down and told me that if I did not cancel at the 2 weeks to go time point I would then be liable for the cost of my full stay if they did not fill the room. Then, I learned from reviews, and after my wife talked to the owner, that the "breakfast" part of the deal was not quite the B&B experience I'm used to. It's more like a continental set-up with like hot scrambled eggs. Not the home-cooked interesting breakfast items served by the house, different items each day. This was not disclosed to me when I called to make the reservation. Then, when I decided to cancel (mainly for those reasons), 3 weeks out from my date, the house withheld $50 of my $350. This was not disclosed to me when I called to make the reservation. The lady said it was on the "small print" of the email, and indeed it was. BAD PRACTICE! Maybe if you are a frequent visitor and you've enjoyed your stay, great. If you're coming from out of town and never went there, consider these practices. NOT GOOD. read more

This is a fantastic B&B. Beth was so helpful when booking. We were coming into town to see Cleveland play the Cubs, and she gave great suggestions for dinning n navigating to the city. The home is beautiful, quiet, quaint n clean. Beautiful decor n the breakfast selections are wonderful n fresh. The bedding n linens were very high end n luxurious. We felt so comfortable. This is a great place to stay. We came in very late on a Friday night and had no issues with a mobile and contactless check in! Much easier than expected for a bed and breakfast. Our room was well appointed and comfortable. Nice and clean, comfortable bed, and even a surprise bottle of champagne! (A surprise to me, anyway!) In the morning, we came downstairs to a cornucopia of breakfast and beverage options. We opted for espresso drinks and sat in the cute little dining room next to the baby grand piano admiring the decor and book collection. This is a well decorated home... we just kind of spent a while taking it all in really. Our host was exceptionally friendly and made great conversation with us and the other guests. Harvey house bed-and-breakfast was the Best place I've been to for staycation in a while!! Beth was super sweet very attentive and quickly responded to anything I needed during my stay. The Jimmy Stewart suite is super gorgeous amazing Decour and feels so luxurious. Since it's Covid time there is grab and go Breakfast but Beth does heat everything up and she actually makes great quality espressos or lattes for you in fancy little mugs! Again, I honestly couldn't have asked for more the jet tubs are also so nice. My first night after taking a shower I did run water for the tub and the first large bit of it was hot after that the hot water did run out a bit but the rest of my stay the hot water was on and working great! Do not walk run to this place because it's definitely amazing I'm already figuring out my next stay for even longer worth every penny!!! read more

You ever not wanted to post a review because you want to keep a place all to yourself? This is the one for me! My expectations were exceeded. We spent the night in the Garden Room. If I didn't have to return to work this morning, we'd probably be there a couple more nights! When I say beautiful, I mean Beau-TI-FUL! Super clean, and with everything you need. Beth is an amazing host(Sorry, I didn't get a chance to say goodbye!) She has so much to offer. The Harvey House is truly beautiful and our (Jimmy Stewart) suite in particular was fantastic. Lots of charming appointments, like a towel warmer, a huge luxe bathroom, a magnificent bed, a lovely chaise. My wife absolutely swooned over our suite. The space is airy , fresh and very large. The living room common area is also very lovely and comfortable and the breakfast was a dutch baby (they incorrectly called a turn over) with syrup, fresh fruit, eggs bacon and sausage. Excellent! The location is terrific as well and on the whole, I would say the value is excellent. But there were some serious miscues. We were greeted by the innkeeper who escorted us to her front parlor which was a disaster. Cluttered and fuggly, we literally thought about leaving right then. It scared us that the rest of the property would be this disheveled. The patio in the rear was also messy and not ready for spring. The most serious irritation was something I found really unacceptable. When you arrive at a B&B on vacation from your troubles and strife, you expect serenity. We were bombarded with prattle about how the economy has adversely affected her business, the pressure from her loans, how she can't pay herself back and other business concerns. How the place is too fancy her tastes and it wouldn't be this nice if she wasn't running a B&B. I simply don't want to hear any of this. It gyps the guest of the B&B charm. When the air conditioning didn't work, we had to hear long explanations about why, and what is and isn't working, and why its probably the thermostat, or the wiring is connecting, etc... Eventually she got a window unit in the room, which did the trick. Bravo! But why the 45 minutes of ceaseless gabbing. This place would be near perfect if the owner confined her conversation to warm, SHORT AND CONCISE welcoming language. read more

My boyfriend took me here for my birthday, (10-02-15) it was our first time at a B&B, I Loved it! I couldn't get over how big and lovely the house was, the lavish furniture and decorations, how friendly the staff was, and how you really get so much more than just a room. You get the whole kitchen, dinning room, living rooms, outside patio seating and free parking. We stayed in their Garden Suite it had a king bed, robes/slippers, spa bathroom with 2person jettub, lotions and candles, a tv with a DVD player, double sided fireplace that connects the bed to the bath, & crazy different mood lighting throughout. After that room and the breakfast where you can choose Whatever you want and how much you want, I don't see us ever staying at a hotel in Chicago again. It's such a little jewel in downtown Oak Park, we even decided to walk around the neighborhood it was so pretty and found a nice place for dinner. We're already planning a second visit. I stayed at Harvey house in February 2020, and am just getting around to reviewing. Beth, the owner and host, was incredibly detail-oriented, friendly, and considerate. She easily took my vegetarian diet into account when making breakfast, which was delicious, healthy, and varied each day. She had it ready exactly when I needed it, as I was staying due to some home renovations and had to work in the morning. The "golden chest" room on the second floor with a queen bed was clean, had an en-suite bathroom with good water pressure, and had a cozy Asian aesthetic. It also had a gas fireplace that was welcome in the cold winter! Unfortunately, one night, a couple in the room above me decided to have a romantic pre-Valentine's Day night of blasting bass heavy music at 2 AM, which woke me up and I couldn't sleep, and I am not a light sleeper! I gingerly knocked and then pounded on the bedroom door of the people above me and asked them to turn off their music, and they did. I told Beth about it the next morning and she profusely apologized. She said she wished she had me wake her up to address the issue, and she told me that she had told this couple the rules about noise before they stayed. She also said the rooms have extra sound-proofing. I'm not sure if Beth could've done anything to prevent this, so I'm not faulting her...but this was just very odd, given that this is a nice B&B. Despite that issue, I highly recommend Harvey House! It is priced appropriately, is in a walkable location to local restaurants, has street parking (need to give plate number to owner), is very clean, has comfortable rooms, and has a superb breakfast. It's located very close to the train, but the noise wasn't that noticeable. You can tell the B&B is a labor of love for the owner, and she's also almost stereotypically passionate about all things Oak Park and social justice/racial equality. :) read more

Owner called 2 weeks prior to our stay to cancel our reservation. Apparently, having the walls of our specific room painted on that PARTICULAR DAY was more important than honoring our reservation. Checked the other reviews, and made the mistake of ignoring other 1 star reviews mentioning the same kinds of problems with the owner, customer service, and honoring reservations. I stayed in Harvey House in April of 2008 for my anniversary. I loved the Victorian home with all the improvements! It was beautifully appointed with a very tasteful blend of antiques and modern furniture and details. The hostess was very charming and invited us to a dinner party she was having in the home for her friends. That was thoughtful. Our room was comfortable, clean and beautiful...the fireplace knocked us out!! I hung out in the open livingroom area, perused books and had wine. Breakfast the next morning was a feast!! OH MY GOD...this place is unbelievable. My husband and I stayed in the Garden Room. Perfect on the 2nd floor of an old Victorian house set in Oak Park. With the exception of the Metra train very close and within ear shot....it was perfect. The heart shaped tub in the room and yummy brownies that were waiting for us when we arrived. Our breakfast we pretty much made to order and coffee was brewing. She had any newspaper, body wash, tampon, whatever you need she has it. Wine glasses, wine, free use of kitchen and house. To begin with; "you want to stay here!" That's really what this review is all about. Was it nice? Would you do it again? Did they live up to expectations? You know, the usual questions. The answer to all the above is "yes". Yes I would stay again; and yes I am glad we chose Harvey House. This was a very special trip I "arranged" as a surprise for my wife's birthday. I did some online research, and found Harvey House, but really until you actually go, who knows? Beth and her staff labor endlessly to assure you an immaculate room, wonderful little "things" everywhere you look, and together, they create an atmosphere of calm and quite you will find both refreshing and unique. Beth seems to know when to be there for a guest and when to provide space. She is genuine in her feeling that when you stay at Harvey House you are in fact part of her extended family. We felt welcomed and comfortable in every way. Running a Bed and Breakfast must be work for some, but they seem to thrive on it and genuinely welcome visitors to their home. For over 13 years they have been adding and perfecting things to this little gem so that the result is really a one-of-a-kind experience. We stayed in the Garden Room, but the other rooms were equally impressive. Let Beth recommend what room she thinks best suits your needs. If I had to give this a rating it would be whatever the best is, 5 stars, 10 stars, whatever. They work for and deserve the high marks. There is no problem driving into the city from here (apx 8 miles) and no parking issues either. We have stayed a lots and lots of B&B's. This place is very special. I LOVE this place!!! It's extremely low key from the outside. But when you step inside it's beautiful! Looks exactly like the pictures online. Please...I'm begging you take advantage of the breakfast. It's sooo good!!! The granola is handmade, and the pop-over pancakes are awesome. I've used Harvey House twice, the first time for our CEO and a visiting dignitary and the second time for a retreat using all of Beth's rooms and hosting a large group from a neighboring hotel. On both occasions, the owner was very flexible and helped us arrange every detail, including catering the large group. The event in Oak Park involving our CEO was enhanced because the Inn has the amenities and comfort it does. Beth could not have been more accommodating or professional. She has structured the B & B for luxury with unusual flair for detail and beauty and she and her staff provide gourmet breakfasts. Everyone raved about the accommodations. On the second occasion, we filled the inn. We are so grateful to have found an innkeeper with remarkable sophisticated flair and who is kind, knowledgeable, and thoughtful. We traveled from Toledo, Ohio to Chicago for the weekend with friends that also stayed at the Harvey House. We were greeted with a wonderfully appointed B&B, immaculate rooms and a very accommodating hostess. The food was over-the-top amazing, the camaraderie between guests was pleasant and refreshing. The conversations with the owner were delightful. Honestly, I think the place is UNDERpriced. Considering all that is offered, this was by far a deal and was a wonderful experience! I don't quite understand some of the other comments talking about how chit-chatty the owner is. We thought she was very informative of our area, the history of the home, and what to do in the area. If you want solitude and silence in your overnight stay, I would suggest not booking any B&B and stay in a Red Roof Inn. read more

These 1 Star reviews are bogus and people need to stop being jerks. Beth is an absolutely amazing host and her home is wonderful. She basically rehabbed the majority of the home herself and took such attention to detail, while trying to maintain the historical beauty of the home. I booked the Garden suite for my wife's birthday, and Beth went above and beyond to make the night wonderful. She setup the flowers and cake for me in the room before we arrived, put out Champaign flutes, fresh strawberries for the cake, and it was incredible. The room itself was beautiful and elegantly done. We used the huge bathtub and loved it, and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast in the morning was so nice, and we just loved talking to Beth about her journey renovating her magnificent place to what it is today. After my return from Harvey House, I could totally relate to the other reviewers. I was turned off initially because we rang the doorbell and she didn't answer. We didn't have the code to the place so we had to call. She didn't answer her phone. It was only after someone saw us peeping in from outside that we were let in. That was greatly irritating. And yes...the owner DOES talk a lot. My family is the accomodating sort and so was very patient listening to her stories. But if it were just me...I would've cut her short long ago. THAT BEING SAID, I still think the overall experience was fabulous. The breakfasts the owner makes are out of this world...homeade english muffins, big puffy pankakes, these egg muffin thingys and high quality bacon. The house was extremely comfortable, our room was delightful and charming, and the owner WAS very warm and welcoming. After a day or so, she grew on me. I felt like a member of her family by the time we left. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone. Just be forewarned that she does like to talk a lot about her life. read more

Husband and I stayed here for three nights since we were attending a friend's wedding in Oak Park. The house is beautiful and very well maintained, as was our room, the "Golden Chest" suite. The room was small, but met our needs just fine. Bed was firm, but comfortable. Only negative to the room was the air conditioning-- it worked just fine, but as it was a window unit it was a bit noisy. I suppose this is what comes with the territory of staying in a converted home versus a big and impersonal hotel-- and all the positives of the Harvey House far outweighed the noise. The common areas of the living room, kitchen, and dining room were all warm and inviting and very clean. We didn't spend much downtime at the inn, but would have been very comfortable doing so. We arrived VERY late following our flight from LA which was delayed (around 2 in the morning), but had been given very clear instructions from the owner, Beth, beforehand as to how to access the home and our room. Everything was waiting for us on the counter and we had no issues. We parked on the street out front for our entire stay with no issues (and were reassured by Beth that the inn would take care of any parking tickets we received--but we didn't get any). Our favorite part of our stay was the breakfasts-- made to order coffee drinks, or regular drip coffee was offered immediately. I had yummy lattes 2 out of the 3 mornings. Our first morning we had "popover" pancakes with a poached egg in herb butter. Second day was baked eggs with herbs with aebelskivers. Last day was breakfast burritos. All mornings we were also served a beautiful bowl of fruit to share. If I could have one complaint, it would be a lack of breakfast meats-- only time we got any meat was on our last day with ham mixed into our burritos. Healthiness and freshness is very much a consideration in creating these breakfasts, so I suppose that may be why-- and I'm okay with that. : ) We initially selected Harvey House because we were gifted a Bed & Breakfast.com giftcard that we wanted to use to help offset the costs of our trip to Chicago-- we likely wouldn't have paid the $200+/night rate under normal circumstances, but after our stay, I would absolutely recommend Harvey House as a wonderful place to stay a short distance from the hustle of downtown Chicago. read more

The first impression was a very odd and small parking lot, which was confusing. However, the house is very beautiful! Very contemporary and elegant. The room we stayed in was absolutely amazing.... And the bed was like sleeping on clouds! The breakfast was set up differently than most, we didn't eat at a big table with other guests like most b&bs, but none the less the food was tasty! The innkeepers were polite, but talked about how well they did business wise which isn't exactly what you want to hear about on a getaway. Also, it lacked the homey comforting feel of a regular bed and breakfast, due to the "fancy up to date" aspect. But overall, very pretty and I'd recommend it! read more

After staying at the Harvey House, I can't imagine staying anywhere else in the Chicago area. The room was clean, luxurious and comfortable. The bed was warm and soft. The staff was very warm, attentive and friendly. The L is right around the corner; an easy 20 minute ride to downtown. Breakfast was healthy, delicious and plentiful, served in a gorgeous back patio. My new husband and I just spent our wedding night at Harvey House. It was a really romantic, and wonderful place to stay. We stayed in the Chalet Suite. It was absolutely beautiful. We were wishing it was winter so we could have used the beautiful stone fireplace in the room! We received great care from the staff too. Since it was the day of our wedding, we weren't able to make it to their check in time. I called a few days ahead and the owner set everything up for us so we could arrive as late as we needed. It was a great relief to not have to leave our party early in order to check into the B&B. They also called the morning of our reservation to make sure everything was in order. The breakfast was delicious! The two ladies there in the morning were so sweet. We felt like royalty staying there. Over all, the rooms are comfortable, and beautifully decorated, and the service was friendly and efficient. I would definitely recommend Harvey House for a romantic getaway! read more

My wife treated me to my first B&B experience just this weekend. We did a staycation weekend in Oak Park. The location of HH is just a short walk away from the great dining, shopping and historical sites that Oak Park has to offer. Very clean, well maintained and all the fixtures & furnishings are kept up to date. The owner/operator was very accommodating... we arrived early, she welcomed us immediately, made us coffee & tea and quickly prepared our room. If you like to read, the common area is lined with all the books you can imagine... along with current magazines for light reading. Pretty place and nice food, but those good impressions evaporate when you have to contend with the owner's obtrusive and indelicate conversations about money and herself ... relentlessly. She talks to anybody caught in her cross hairs about the B&B financial affairs, operational costs, and tipping. There is a reason why Select Registry has Harvey House has one of the best B&B's in Illinois, our stay was amazing and the Inn keeper, Beth, and her daughter went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed. We stayed in the Jimmy Stewart Suite and the pictures do not do the room justice. Great bed, plenty of room and a fantastic bathroom. The location of Harvey House is perfect for just about everything only 1.5 miles from great dining and less than 5 miles away from the Frank Lloyd Wright House which was a fantastic tour. We stayed for 2 nights and each morning Beth prepared a delicious breakfast. Harvey House is something that you have to experience.
