I brought my car in to have the clutch cables replaced--which they did a great job on. At the same time the "check engine" light was on which they were told about. When I picked up the car, the cables were fixed but the "check engine" light was still on. They told me all it took to fix the light was to reset the switch which they would do the next time I brought it in. Huh??? read more

It is a rare model and has had a host of problems but Marc has been able to keep her in great running shape through it all, at a fraction of the cost other shops would have likely charged. Took my Mini to GPS to get an oil leak fixed. The correct repair was made promptly for a reasonable charge. Mini's are highly complex autos that are difficult to service and GPS is up to the task. The only real alternative, the dealers, simply cannot match GPS. They also noticed a couple of side issues and dealt with them. A holistic approach to my car's health? Nice! If your Mini is out of its warranty period, GPS are your service guys. read more

Excellent shop!!! The staff (esp. Rob, but everyone else who I worked with) are very knowledgeable (IMHO) had were extremely helpful each time I spoke with them. I bought a used 330xi in manual and the clutch went a few weeks after I bought it. The car was covered under an extended warranty, so I brought it to Herb Chambers to have it looked at and was told that I needed a new clutch and flywheel to the tune of around $3k, and that it wasn't covered by the warranty. On the recommendation of a friend, I took it to GPS for a second opinion and told that only the clutch needed to be replaced, which they could do about a third of the cost. They fixed the clutch and I have since put about 20k miles on the car w/o any trouble. I've since brought the car in for various maintenance tasks and each found them very honest and reasonable, which is hard to come by. I since moved out of state and was looking for an opinion on new tires for my car. I decided to call GPS on the off-chance that I could get their opinion even though I wasn't going to go through them. Rob was very generous with his time, not only going through the details of different tire options but also offering to review auto shops in my area to help me find a new place to bring my car. Overall, I was very impressed at how honest Rob and others at GPS are and at how reasonable their prices are. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking for somewhere in the area to take their BMW (or other German car). read more

As a new E30 owner they were able to get my car back in proper form and give me an attack list of things I can fix on my own. I've now been back to GPS five or six times, and without exception they deliver an impeccable service experience, thoughtfully diagnosing issues, recommending what's necessary and helpful, and explicitly NOT recommending anything extraneous. Work is done to the highest standards and priced fairly. As someone who isn't afraid to DIY a lot of repairs, I've found GPS very open to helping me figure out what is DIY-appropriate, and what might need their help (and they've bailed me out of a tricky situation or two when complications arose). I have been there several times, with two BMWs. They are shade tree mechanics working indoors, and I have not been (to not make a pun) steered wrong a single time. They are not looking to run up your bill, and they maintain a genuine, intellectual interest in the problem you present them with. I have been a sucker for whatever an authorized dealer claimed. If they said I needed a right -handled veebeelfeetzer for $1000 I would've said go right ahead. GPS, on two occasions, gave me email instructions on what to do, and it worked, and I'm someone who is unable to do more with a car than wash it. Feel free to contact me directly. We couldn't be more pleased with our experience at German Performance Service. After dealing with what we believed to be a dead battery, and then after failed attempts to jump start the car, what we believed to be a malfunctioning starter or alternator, we had our car towed to GPS after business hours. They called the next morning to say that the engine only required a new connection to the starter, a part that cost $40. They billed for one hour of service, the replacement part and a replacement tail light bulb, which they noticed was out. They also fully charged up the battery and topped off the oil without any charge and without our request. They offer a complete service offering, and we couldn't be more impressed with their integrity and ability to have the car repaired so quickly. Bar none - this is the best automobile shop in Boston and certainly the place to take a German car for any needs. I have a 2008 Mini John Cooper Works with less than 40,000 miles. Given my brother specializes in German autos and also owns his own auto repair shop on the west coast, servicing my car at a high-quality location with knowledgeable and personable staff has always been a priority. Rob - and everyone else at GPS - operates with the utmost professionalism. They are able to appropriately identify and triage issues requiring immediate repair versus issues that may require maintenance at a later date. Furthermore, they offer these services at reasonable costs (still expensive because these are German cars, but much more reasonable compared to the local dealer) and always contact you in advance to authorize repairs. This is in stark contrast to many shops which will look for small flaws or other ways to nickel and dime customers. I would recommend GPS to anyone without hesitation. read more

This shop is fantastic. I have had problems with my daughter's Mini that only seemed to worsen every time someone worked on it. Being new to the Boston area, I had no idea who to call but some research sent me to GPS. My only regret is that I didn't find them sooner. Rob worked with me to have the car towed to the shop; he communicated with me during the entire process, keeping me informed of what they were doing, and finally letting me know what was causing the problem. It was an electrical issue (among other things); they repaired it and even informed me of a recall that had been issued by Mini on a previous costly repair performed by another shop!! I can't recommend GPS highly enough!! Rob was great to deal with--he was very knowledgeable, always returned my calls promptly and went that "extra mile" to help me. This shop is truly one of the best I've ever dealt with and I would highly recommend them. Special note to women: this shop doesn't treat women with that condescending attitude that you find at many auto repair centers. I was always treated with respect and had whatever questions I asked answered in a professional and respectful manner. Great people, great service!! I totally agree with the previous two reviews. Mark (and Keith) did a tremendous amount of work on my 1990 BMW over the past three months. Mark is a very intelligent guy and communicates in very clear terms what the problem is and what your options are--and that skill is crucial especially when the customer is not all that mechanically savvy. He will offer to save you some money by not installing the most expensive or new OE part around, if that's what you want. (Some BMW specialty shops will only install new BMW parts.) He's very good at explaining the pros and cons for your options. My engine blew a bearing and he was able to find one for $500 from a friend, and even spent some (unpaid) time helping his friend extract it from his car and transport it to the shop. $2400 for a used engine, installed, is not bad at all. Their hourly rate could be considered a little high by some, but I have learned from past experience that you don't want to crimp on a labor rate when you're dealing with a beloved classic car. Even though I live in Acton I find their shop to be accessible because it is close to the Porter Square commuter rail station (and to Alewife T station). GPS is the fourth indie shop I've tried, and I won't be going anywhere else anytime soon. read more
