To cut to the chase: be very careful. I took my car here for a burning smell; they looked at the issue but were unable to diagnose a cause despite there being 3 potential sources including the engine running out of oil, the engine being overfilled with oil (documented on their invoice) and the timing cover reportedly leaking oil. We were then told not to drive it on the interstate, suggesting a safety concern but they did not indicate a reason or any urgent recommendations. They also recommended $7400 of additional work for 10 issues they discovered. Given the extraodinary cost, I took it to our usual mechanic at Fresh Pond Gas (we had tried GNG on the strong recommendation of a friend), who had no idea what they were talking about aside from 1-2 of their listed issues. One of the more concerning details was Good News flagged the AC compressor (and we had never complained about issues with our AC) as seized but the AC works-- this is impossible if the AC compressor is seized. The only explanation for this is they never ran the AC or they fabricated the entire issue. Of note, the replacement they quoted was $1500. The other issues they claimed involved different components of the car that were reportedly leaking and rusting out; my trusted mechanic assured us any rust was due to normal wear and tear(superficial rust is ubiquitous to vehicles in NE due to the salt and weather)-- not issues that needed attention or even monitoring; nothing was leaking. The quotes on these issues were significantly greater than the average cost, some times 2-3x's. However, the most concerning fact was they flagged a rusted subframe but never alerted me to this issue. The subframe is a structural metal frame that supports the engine, suspension, and steering systems -- it's fundamental to the car's safety and handling. Damage to it is one of the most serious findings a mechanic can make. If the subframe is in any way rusted to the point where it is flagged by a mechanic, the owner needs to be aware of it because it is a huge safety issue. Either GNG neglected what could have been a wildly dangerous situation or the rust was not an issue. Interestingly, while diagnosing numerous issues as noted above, GNG seemed to miss a number of items that ultimately needed to be addressed including a failing battery, clutch, flywheel, and rotors-- all which needed replacement. The failing battery became problematic because it died suddenly on me while I was driving, requiring me to have it towed to my mechanic. My understanding is that a battery that suddenly fails can be dangerous since the steering is often electrically powered (as my system is). In their defense, they did diagnose 2 issues correctly-- front control arms and brake pads (which they overquoted). I also found the invoice intriguing-- it was professionally printed out with my information, VIN, license plate, what was done, the charges, etc. On the bottom, the list of recommendations was listed. However, the estimates for these recommendations were all handwritten in pen and not itemized with estimates for labor, parts, etc. I was under the impression that for any modern computerized system for a garage, which GNG presumably has, an itemized estimate for a proposed recommendation would be printed out with the rest of the document. I could not identify any legitimate explanation for this practice at a modernized garage. In the end, thank god we got the second opinion, because it saved us at least $5000. To conclude: we were really disappointed in GNG after hearing so many positive reviews; we felt as if we were presented with so many unnecessary recommendations without documentation as to how they came to their conclusions with vague estimates far above the average rates. If you decide to use this garage, I would have a very low threshold to seek a second opinion and to always check their prices against market rates. 6/11 update: Casey reached out to me and we had about a 30 minute conversation. He agreed a seized AC compressor could not blow cold air and stated the diagnosis was due to a miscommunication with his technician. He would not provide me the name of the technician, despite MA regulations, stating, "you've been posting reviews." Stated that his technician smelled a burning odor consistent with a seized compressor. When I asked how often a diagnosis was made based on smell he said, "there are no standard anything in this business-- every situation is different." When asked for documentation re: more details on how the diagnosis was made (given it's a $1500 replacement), he stated, "nothing gets logged into a computer." RE: the subframe, he denied it was a safety issue and that during his career, he had never seen one break. Stated that the "rusted subframe" that was listed under recommendations, "was for us to keep an eye on, it wasn't for you-- you didn't need to know about it." I had been curious about this place long before I moved to Boston. Because I am a fan of Car Talk, I really wanted to come here. We brought a car since felt wheel vibration on the highway. The guy at Good News Garage drove from Cambridge to Watertown to check it out. The cause was uneven tire wear, so for now nothing to treat it. They didn't charge for diagnosing. Wow. So generous. Everything is a rip-off in Cambridge, so it was quite surprising and great. read more

The ABS and traction control lights were showing on my 12-year-old Ford Fiesta; I took it to my local dealership and they told me it was an ABS module issue and they couldn't fix it because Ford was no longer making the part. I took the car to GNG and after doing their own diagnosis they agreed with the dealership, and also couldn't find the part new, so then they arranged to get an existing ABS module rebuilt for me. There were some bumps along the way (e.g. the first module they tried was unrepairable), but they got it done. The check engine light also started showing a few days before I took it in; the dealership said it was probably related to the ABS module, but GNG diagnosed it as a separate issue and fixed it for me for the cost of the diagnosis fee. Communication was great, pricing was transparent and very fair (lower than I was expecting), and they told me up-front when they thought I'd be better off getting a repair done at the dealership (due to the possibility of extended warranty coverage). I'm planning to return to GNG whenever I need car help from now on. read more

As always, these guys were great. I've had a problem with the headlights on my Acura RDX -- they are so dim I can no longer drive at night. They knew about this particular problem with this particular model -- and also knew that Acura also knows about it but refuses to recall the cars, as they should -- and were able to replace the headlights for half the price quoted to me by the Acura dealer. We also discussed probable future work that will need to be done on my car, which now has 95,000 miles, and I got their advice on whether to get rid of it or not and, if so, what might be a good replacement. They looked at it for the day, ran some tests, and called back to say "well I have no idea." They even searched online (I know, because they asked if it was my posting online they found, it was). I have been here once since I have moved to Cambridge. I got an oil change and asked them to diagnose a steering wheel vibration that occurs at highway speeds. It turns out that the steering wheel vibration is just uneven tire wear. I was surprised when I got the bill and they only charged for the oil change ($35). To figure out the steering wheel shake, they had to inspect the bearings and suspension to rule out anything dangerous and they had to test drive it on the highway to feel the vibration. Even though the car didn't need mechanical work, they spent their time doing something that I had asked for. It would have been 100% fair for me to pay them for their time but they didn't even charge. From now on, I am taking my car here for everything down to the oil changes for as long as I am in the Boston area. read more

It took a little while to get my car done but I was very impressed with Good News. I needed a new clutch on my 1999 VW Cabrio and they gave the car a full look over as well. I could tell they gave careful attention to all the details of the car--partly to make sure that throwing more money at a car this age would even be worth it. A pleasant surprise was the fact that Ryan at the shop was very communicative about the repair and kept me updated on things. He also gave me a list of optional problems to fix (things that might break in one year, but not tomorrow). I got it back today and it feels amazing. I'm such a big fan of Good News - I've taken my car to them since I first got it, and even though it's quite old and I continuously think it's on its last legs, they have helped me ID problems before they became big issues and have offered me great service and quick advice. But these guys are down-to-earth, "this is what's up with your car, costs this much, but you decide what you wanna do" kind of place. Things I was looking for: 1. a full check-up -- bumper to bumper review for about $70 2. simple fixes -- oil and filter changes 3. recommendations on further repairs Things I liked: 1. availability -- usually they can do an oil change in a couple of hours 2. reasonable prices -- check up for $70, oil change for $35, etc Things I didn't like: 1. availability -- there are times of year (late summer especially) when their first available time is about two weeks out 2. cash only -- it felt a bit uncomfortable sometimes carrying a few hundred in cash to pay for the repairs Things you should know: 1. cash only 2. don't do tires (changes, rotations, etc) 3. if you don't pick up your car, it will be parked on the street overnight (it's not a bad neighborhood, but I know some people are picky about where their car goes beddie-bye at night) read more

Yes, it's the shop of Car Talk fame, and it is right here in Cambridge, Our Fair City. While visits to other mechanics may feel more like a trip to Click and Clack's lawyers at Dewey, Cheatem & Howe (whose window you can see in Harvard Square above Curious George), a trip to Good News Garage is practically a pleasure. I have twice now had the recommendation for my car be to do nothing other than monitor the situation, and the charge for that advice was zero. How can you beat that? There are a thousand rip-off mechanics in Boston and Cambridge. On Mem. Drive, on Comm. Ave., on Mass. Ave. Everywhere. They will find things that don't need fixing and charge you a couple hundred bucks for them, or they will massively overcharge you. Even national big name chains. I had one of those places offer to make a repair for me for $500 and eventually got it done elsewhere for less than half of that. Be very careful out there if you don't follow my advice and go to Good News Garage! [P.S. I have to say that I think Ilya Jacob R.'s review for this place is totally unfair and seems highly implausible. The only problem was tire overinflation? Doubtful! It's the "Car Talk" (you know "Click and Clack") garage! I SHOULD have taken my 2005 VW Jetta here FIRST to troubleshoot its problem of starting in the mornings (ran great the rest of the day), but I didn't. 1) I took it to the dealership, and left $800 poorer but with two new sensors. Who cares, it didn't help. 2) I took it took another mechanic, and dropped another $200 and they replaced the same sensor. Finally, I took it to Good News Garage! They called me back a few hours later to let me know they knew the exact problem - my ignition system was misfiring due to frayed wires and they'd need to replace it. They recommended original VW parts, which would be pricier but guaranteed to work. I picked up my car the same day, and was happy with the price. They charged me a reasonable amount for labor and the quality parts. Car starts AND runs better than it has this year. I'll be bringing my car here in the future. P.S. The staff is super friendly and helpful. They offered to answer any questions on the phone when they first called, and then again when I was checking out. As past reviewers already mentioned, this garage is owned by Click & Clack from NPR's Car Talk. That immediately gives them more credibility and responsibility (or duty, if you will) to provide top level service. I took my car over there about a year and a half ago and their policy was to charge for full vehicle evalution something in the range of $70. Not surprising. Following their evaluation, they didn't give a whole lot of good news, but a list of problems the vehicle had and require some immediate fixes. In light of their findings, I sold the vehicle on the cheap only to learn a few weeks later from the new owner that the only problem was over-inflated tires. Hmm...no question the new owner could've been misinformed, but either way, just be conscience of what they are looking to fix and charge you - just as you would anywhere - just because these guys are on the radio and have their employees running the shop doesn't automatically make them reputable or a good value. By the way, when I was over there, one of the mechanics said that Click & Clack are pretty old something like 70s or 80s! Who knew!? They sound like teenagers! I work down the street from Good News and was referred there by several colleagues. My first time in was somewhat of a quick fix - it was a good experience and I was happy to go back. Knowing the garage is owned by the Car Talk guys is comforting and as another reviewer stated, you expect it's almost their duty to do a great job. The second time around, the diagnosis was a bit off, which resulted in me having to go back to have things rectified and I let them know (in a cordial but firm way) that I was disappointed and felt misled. Long and short of it, when I returned to pick up my car, they had completed the work, fixed another error, refunded the extra expense for a part that wasn't a part of the initial problem and apologized. Wow! When does that ever happen? They renewed and restored my faith in them (especially that they don't take advantage of those less mechanically knowledgeable than them) and I will forever be a fan of theirs. Craig and Sean are friendly and take the time to explain the problem and your options with you. On at least one occasion, while they fixed one thing, they've warned me that another problem might arise and what it will cost, but that it could wait. Their service is just what you'd expect -- professional, efficient, detail-oriented and fairly priced. On a recent visit, Good News fixed two long-running problems with my car that had stymied other mechanics, and pointed out some other items that will soon be in need of repair (but without any pressure or scare tactics to force me to fix them now). One serious word of warning for the financially strapped (and who isn't?) -- Good News only takes cash money, no credit cards, no checks. My bf does know quite a bit about cars so that's helpful, but just the fact that they're willing to get on the phone with him and keep us updated before they proceed with any work is great. Brought my 2004 Volvo in and Ryan did a very thorough and excellent job in diagnosing problems I was having and fixing them. He caught a few very important safety items that another garage missed, including the gas smell coming from my car...yeah...the fuel tank was leaking gas. A very dangerous problem another place I had brought the car to didn't bother to check or did not diagnose. He was great at explaining everything to me so I fully understood the problems and what was needed to be done to solve them and the costs associated. We talked about how long I wanted to keep the car and he gave me a budget guideline to keep in mind with regard to when it would be good to fix something in the future or if it would be better to get a newer car so I don't sink unnecessary money into the car. He also gave me a complete list of items to keep tabs on, general timeframes when various parts tended to need to be checked upon and things to be aware of now that the car is at 150K plus miles. I was visiting Boston with my teenager to look at colleges when my Forester started making a worrisome noise (like a metal pizza box was stuck under the car!). I was worried about driving ~ 200 miles home without knowing that the car was OK. At the recommendation of a local friend, I called the Good News Garage (at 7:30am) and told them my problem. They said "come over and we'll check it out". I (noisily) zipped over and within 30 min they had identified it as a loose heat shield, installed a few clamps and for $35, sent me happily on my way! I was looking forward to bringing my 2005 Hyundai Tucson into the cartalk garage. I had a P0133 and suspected it needed an exhaust manifold and gasket (I had used some soapy water and a shop vac to check it myself beforehand and was pretty confident about this). I had already replaced the upper O2 sensor myself. I called to make an appointment and was simply told to bring it in next Wednesday, no time, just in the morning. I brought it in at about 10:30am and said I had an appointment. Everyone was having a break and immediately shot back with attitude about, "who told you to bring it in at 10:30?" I was told that they wouldn't have time most likely to look at it that day since it was so late. No problem, I didn't need the car and could leave it. Once they looked at it they told me that they smoked it and didn't see any exhaust or intake leaks. They recommended replacing the upper O2 sensor. I mentioned that I had just replaced it. He suggested replacing it with an OEM sensor, suggesting it was NGK. I told him Bosch is OEM and that's what I used. Then he suggested that I may need to replace them both, that's he's seen issues when they aren't replaced in pairs. He could replace the upper sensor with Hyundai OEM for $300. When I asked, "well what if that doesn't solve it, what next", he immediately told me that of course he wouldn't be able to swallow the cost of the parts. I said no thanks, that I'd pick up the car the next day. I picked it up and paid the $80 in diagnostic time. Then I took it to a mechanic in Brookline that had been recommended to me. They properly diagnosed the leaking exhaust manifold, explaining it would leak when cold and then seal when warm. They replaced the manifold and gasket (and only those) and it solved my problem. Moral of the story: save your money and take your car somewhere else, some place that isn't going to rip you off to just swap out parts. read more

Good News Garage is conveniently located and when I heard everyone raving about the talk show I thought I would give them a try because my mechanic of 20 years suddenly went out of business. The first time was fine. They checked my car said everything was fine and charged me a reasonable fee. The next time I came in needing a timer belt which I knew was going to be costly. Yes, it was a little more expensive at Good News, but I thought for the comfort of knowing it was done right it was worth it. Then they found another $1700 worth of stuff needing immediate repair. Total bill $2500. Okay well if your car really needs that kind of repair you do it. First I asked them to prioritize the repairs. I would take care of the most pressing problem first and then after a few months deal with the rest. After hemming and hawing they said I definitely needed my control arm repaired. My brakes could go maybe? another 5000 miles and the struts that were leaking could go a few months. Well I had the control arm done and the timing belt fixed which they said were the most important. Next the "cash only" policy became a real nuisance trudging to the bank (without my car) to get cash. Who carries around that kind of money. So yes even when the bill is $1000 of dollars they are still "cash only." Because of the nuisance factor I decided to go else where for the rest of the work. I went to Hoonda King. I am back to my leary mechanic posture, but so far they have been great. Yeah! they take credit cards. My engine light was on and they fixed it. No problem only $400 which included a 5 oil change card and they checked my brakes which Good News said I needed replace back in November and said I still had about half the brake pad left, and did I mention they said my struts were still fine, not great but in Boston who has great struts. I don't drive a lot so the brake pads could have been used up I guess in 3 months, but it is nice to be told "how much pad is left as oppose to just you need them. I came away feeling like Good News treated me like regular car dealerships like Ernie Boch Honda or Honda Village. you can depend on the car dealer to find every tiny flaw they can think of to run up a gigantic bill and Good News was pretty close to the same but what made them worse was the "cash only " policy. Needless to say regardless of how things work out with Hoonda King. I will not be returning to Good News, and what's the deal with no credit cards. Do you mean they can't afford the fees to accept credit cards? I think it's another way that they say that they just do not care about their customers. Walking around with $1000's of dollars in your pocket is crazy and dangerous. Here are the questions I used to determine the necessity and priority of the repairs They did answer honestly, and once you get them talking they will help you figure out what is reasonable and they can be helpful. 1.) What repair is absolutely necessary based on safety? 2.) Is the proposed fix a permanent fix or is this a reoccurring problem? If reoccurring how can I deal with this in a safe but money manageable way? 6/27/12 update I have heard they now take credit cards. Good job! Although they are expensive you will know everything that is wrong with your car and they are trustworthy. Great for old cars. They also will give odd tips that can really make a difference in the life of your car. Like if you clean out the area over the tire it will prevent it from rusting out. read more

I have enjoyed the Car Talk show over the years and when I found out from the body shop next door that the Good News Garage was owned by the guys from CARTALK I thought great I will take my car there for some repairs. I just wanted to say I had a VERY poor customer experience and would NOT recommend them if your looking for a very customer friendly- honest shop/ it was among my worst customer service experience and frankly did not get a good vibe from them from the beginning. I had spent over 1300 dollars for 2 repairs in the past month and to be treated poorly is unacceptable. My car was over heating and before they actually had a mechanic really look into it they were quoting me over 700 for a water pump. BEFORE looking at possibly the thermostat etc Of course it was the water pump and I was in for over 700 dollars. When I went to pick up my car the back seat was full of things from my trunk and when I opened my trunk it was a complete mess. When they went digging around for the tire lock they some how removed the rear tail light casing it was off and at the time I didn't know where it was and the other side of the trunk the siding was collapsed in exposing the amplier etc for the sound system. Not sure how they they managed to make a mess of my trunk but I had to dig around to find the missing piece and they had to do some work to repair or reattach the interlining of my trunk. The manager there ended up getting very agitated and just making wise&^% statements to me and just left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I have written glowing reviews of the Body shop next door they are GREAT people but I would say for me I will STAY away from Good News I did not feel I was treated like a customer should be treated and that shop is no different that any other shop you might be worrying they might take advantage of you. read more

I have an older (2008) Saab 9-3 that I used to have serviced at the dealer. However, the dealer kept jerking me around, wanting me to buy a new car instead of getting my perfectly reasonable current car fixed. So I asked a friend to help me find a good local garage, and they recommended Good News Garage. I've now been a happy customer of Good News Garage for several years. Even though I no longer work in Cambridge, I still come in from out of town to get my car serviced. Craig and Ryan are that good! I've also been there a couple of times when Ray Magliozzi has been by. Good News Garage is great at fixing my car's problems, about finding problems I didn't know about (and I trust that the problems are actually there, I do not think they are snowing me!), and also telling me which car issues can wait to be fixed. I used to live just a couple blocks from here, and so I took my 97 civic here out of convenience. Craig has been incredibly helpful to me in his understated way ever since. I have had the AC motor/blower replaced, my clutch replaced and some brake work done here and I have always been treated well and the prices were always unbeatable. Two nights ago, I hit a small bump and all the electricals in my car went out. I fiddled around with the car while some electricals came back and flickered on and off, but nothing worked. I checked the battery cables (they'd come loose before) and they seemed fine, and ended up needing to have it towed home. On Monday morning a mechanic from another shop (closer to my house) came and looked at it and told me the alternator and battery needed to be replaced at a cost of $650. My father thought that was crazy since everything was fine until I hit a bump in the road, and insisted that I get a second opinion. I did what I should have done right off the bat and took it to Good News. Upon my arrival Craig started tinkering with it, and instantly (they were still taking down my information) figured out the problem: the battery cable wasn't staying fastened well. Even though it looked like it was on tight, they just cranked down on it and everything came back. The $650 problem never existed, all I needed was a new battery cable. What can I add? The atmosphere is mellow and at the same time up beat. A ripped poster for 1997 Chevy brake recall along with charitable causes share the wall space adding an endearing touch. They were next door to my favorite body shop, De Leo's, so I thought I'd asked them to replace my headlight and bulb for clock. It turns out that I actually needed a module which I know would cost twice more at the dealer, since the warranty on my beautiful Infiniti Q45 conveniently just lapsed. I had to bring it back when the part arrived. After I arrived to pick up the car, they also fixed an annoying rattle in the dash and re-installed a bolt in the driver's seat which the dealer never got too because they couldn't figure it out, even when I left it with them for a day. This was not added to my bill. Much to my surprise, because I probably didn't pay attention to the signs, I realized they are a cash only shop, but they took my check since I was in a tough spot and very apologetic. These guys are awesome!! I had been searching for a good mechanic for my truck since moving back to Cambridge. It's a pretty challenging modified pickup that few people outside myself have been trusted to wrench on. I brought in my girlfriend's Volkswagen first and after they did some great work on her car; I figured I'd give them a go with my truck. I am TOTALLY GLAD I did. These guys were great in diagnosing and fixing a problem with my A/C and also did a great job installing some suspension components I had brought in. Ryan and Sean have been great ever since I started going there and now I'm siked to have trusted mechanics nearby. If you need anything from a simple oil change to something more serious, these guys will work with you to diagnose the problem and get you rolling again. I was fortunate enough to live around the corner from their shop for a few years, so when I had car problems their shop was the logical choice. First of all anyone giving this place anything but 5 stars is retarded. How many mechanics that you know have MIT phds? They had no problem installing parts for me that I bought somewhere else. They had no problems with me bringing my POS car back twice because I thought I heard altrnator belt slipping and redoing the work at no charge to my satisfaction. They were honest and recommended other shops for appropriate repairs. The prices are on the low side too. However its cash only. No checks no credit cards. read more
