Newly renovated 2.4 million dog park in the city. Near the bison paddock. PROS: *own parking lot. *huge fenced area. *small/large area and there's a gate that CONNECTS both sides. Major plus. *water fountain with 3 levels. *multiple entrances on all sides. *they provide waste bag holders. *2-3 benches and tables on both sides. CONS: *there's only 2 trash cans and they're right outside the park. So you have to leave the dog park to throw away poop. Not sure why they didn't put it inside the actual park. The park has sand and turf. Not sure I like the sand because the dogs definitely get dirty (and it probably wouldn't be ideal when it rains cause it'll get muddy. Also, stray cats or animals might use it as a litter box). The small dog area has a larger turf section. There are also lots of logs which make a great makeshift obstacle course or for dogs to pee on. There's a section in the park with tanbark but it's gated. Would have been cool if they included tanbark so dogs could have multiple enrichment of sand, turf, and tanbark. Overall, it's a nice park. read more

LOVE this park! It's great for all well behaved pups- with two sections, garbage cans and dog fountains and a nice two gate entrance/exit in case you have a pup that likes to try to sneak out. Complete plenty of room to run or sniff with sand and astroturf areas on both sides. read more

Renovations are great! Lots of room for pups and people, have been able to easily snag a parking spot in the lot for this area on the weekends, clean and friendly folks and dogs. I do wish there were trash bins in the gated area, but that's really the only "complaint". You'll turn on 36th off Fulton and it's the first road to your right. read more

One of the ONLY fenced dog parks in the city! It's great, although it would be a lot better if the city would put in grass. We started taking to our dog here because he wasn't quite ready for places like point Isabel or fort funston- having adopted him a month ago, his recall wasn't quite there yet ;) That being said, our dog loves going here! Sometimes there are 60-70 dogs at a time, which can be a bit overwhelming for a shy dog, but it's great for our dog who just wants to play all the time! Overall I've had a positive experience with the dogs and owners that attend here- although there have been a few occasions of some pretty difficult other owners. I would highly recommend bringing your pup here if you're looking for a fenced option. read more

My first time here was great. My dog stuck by me and was scared to move away from me so I just chatted with some pretty cool dog owners. The second time I came, it was the total opposite experience. My dog was more social this time and he actually roamed around. He took a tennis ball which belonged to another person. I quickly went to get it out of his mouth to return it to the rightful owner since she was telling me I had to give the ball back. When I got it out of my dog's mouth to hand to her, her dog quickly jumped for the ball and BIT me in the process. I know she didn't mean any harm (even though it hurt), but the owner was not apologetic at all. I should've just told her FINDERS KEEPERS. What else irked me was that a gentleman took his sweet time to leave the park while my dog was waiting right next to him. He left the gate opened for a good 5 seconds and my dog of course BOLTED out behind him. He pretended as if nothing happened while I chased after my dog. For reference, my dog is a 6 months old husky. He's young, curious, and probably going to be an escape artist. I came to a gated dog area for a reason!! Why's he letting my dog free??? Luckily there wasn't any cars coming into the parking lot, and he got distracted with something in the grass so I was able to leash him back. This place is a total hit or miss. So I actually liked this place. I am not a dog walker. Just an owner of a (currently) 8 month old border collie. I didn't notice any dog walkers or rude people. All dogs and owners were pretty friendly. Having sand and fake grass did cause a bit of a dog urine smell but it is a dog park and I'm sure the doggos love it. I recognize this is one of the few fenced dog parks in the city, but it was not a great experience. Just like so many other people have mentioned there are a lot of dog walkers and their dogs. We have enjoyed other dog parks so much more than this one. I don't blame the dog walkers completely, because when there's that many dogs it's hard to control them. I like dog parks where individual owners are there with their dogs and the dogs play well together. This one had too many dogs biting my dog on the neck. I recognize this is often play, but many of the dogs were too aggressive and or scary for our puppy. read more

It's big, it's fenced, it's centrally located. But it has an extremely strong pee smell all around the place. The amount of exercise and fun your dog will have here is relative to how many other dogs are there that day, and how friendly they are. Mostly, my dog just wanders around and sniffs stuff. As other yelpers have mentioned, there are lots of owners who just let their dogs in and talk on the phone or don't pay attention or pick up after their dogs. There have always been packs of dogs with a walker when I go too, which I don't mind, so long as they're all well behaved. read more

Filthy - stay away! This park is filthy and disgusting. I really wanted to like it because it is fenced in and it is located in a nice part of Golden Gate Park. However, what I found was a dirt place that has the most horrible pee and poop stench, is overcrowded with dogs, all from dog walkers. Dogs bark non stop and show aggressive behavior. No surprise: vans park, doors open, 5-10 dogs per van exit and the walkers don't take care of them at all. They don't pick up poop - and that's what the area looks like. Awful! It's a shame, this could be such a great place if it was maintained better and if they banned people with more than two dogs. That's why we can't have nice things :( read more

"Owned" by dog walkers each with 10+ dogs. Not great.. They provide no supervision, no care, and let the dogs hump and bite other people and dogs. They don't care though, they're getting paid. Just wonder if the puppy parents know this is what they're paying for. I hope GGP puts up a sign like "No person shall use a dog park for any commercial purpose. Professional dog walkers, whose business is to walk dogs for private individuals, may bring no more than two dogs" it might help mitigate the problems here. BEWARE: The dominating group of dog walkers will bully you if you suggest to them that they pick up the poop and supervise their dogs. It's pretty much a dog walker gang. TIP: Avoid this place at all costs. There are better spots in the city with more well-mannered people and dogs. read more

Love this dog park. It's large, fully fenced, and always seems to have dogs for my dog to play with. For the most part I've always had good luck with the owners and their dogs and the regulars always seem to know each other. Funny enough I know the names of more dogs there than I do the people! There's a small patch of grass, but otherwise it's just sandy dirt. Sure, my dog gets dusty running around with the other dogs, but he's a dog, that's the point, right? Nothing a quick wipe down can't fix otherwise it's always a good excuse to give him a bath. If you're headed there, beware this place is hard to find! Took me several trips in the car before I finally set out on foot to find it. It's located directly behind the Bison Paddock. If you're coming from the Richmond side, head into the park on 36th Avenue towards the lake and look for the first turn off on the right with the yellow gate frame. Drive down and you'll find the dog park and a small parking lot. See you there! read more

They just renovated the park and it is so spacious. A lot of space for a bunch of pup pups to roam around and play. There is parking and benches to sit. A bunch of friendly dog trainers and other dog owners there as well. Will definitely be back and would recommend. read more

I live 2 blocks away from this dog park, this park is fenced but is very dirty and most of the 50-60 dogs there are with dog walkers. Rude dog walkers who do not take responsibility for the dogs they bring. I guess these dog walkers come so often they've formed a bit of a clique? Wow so cool... They sit on the tables and let their dogs run around without supervision, do not even care when one of their dog kept jumping on me and clawing the heck out of me. Ok fine? I can tell the dog off. Now, onto my dog and theirs. My Alaskan Klee Kai is about 6 months of age and 12 pounds. Walked into the park and immediately got attacked by this dog. I broke them up, and brought my dog further away but this dog continued to follow my dog and attacked him a second time. This was when one of the rude walkers runs up and screams "THAT DOG IS INTACT THAT'S WHY!!" Then all of the other walkers come up to me and without even an introduction asks "ARE YOU GOING TO GET HIM FIXED?!" Uhhh why is that your problem? My vet and breeder are the ones I listen to and they said he is not ready to be fixed yet? Then a few minutes later, another one of the dogs come and attacks my dog once again. The same walker runs up and screams "THAT DOG IS INTACT!" Ok lady? What's your problem? So what if he's "intact"? He's not the one being aggressive towards the neutered dogs, they were the ones being aggressive? And if you didn't have 10 dogs with you, then maybe you can control it. Overall, this place is horrible for real dog owners. Don't bring your one single dog here as they will just get ganged up on and you'll end up getting screamed at by these very "professional" dog walkers. A tip to all those walkers... You're being paid to watch every single one of these dogs, please for the well-being of theirs, do not take more you can handle just for that extra buck. You should be walking or engaging with these dogs, not just leaving them to run free at a park so you can chat with the others. read more

Sigh. I'm not giving this park 1-star because just having a fenced in dog park available is a good thing, even though that's really all this one deserves. Our dog got filthy because of all the dust, sand and dirt. Is it really too much for the city to upkeep some sort of grass area? I'd even go for weeds... Our dog loves to fetch a ball. Our ball was getting so dirty, we thought we'd have to pitch it. We were here for around 20-30 minutes and decided to leave and go to our regular dog park because our dog wasn't getting the exercise he needs, and he was eating massive amounts of dirt from trying to pick up the ball. This place is just pretty gross. Reminds me of a huge kitty litter box. Not to mention the drinking water area was archaic. read more

This was a fantastic spot before dog walkers became privy to it. There's a frequent flyer that often brings 10+ dogs with her and is absolutely unapologetic about the way the dogs behave, doesn't attempt to avoid conflict between the dogs she walks and other pups. Today, she was seen in a heated argument with another owner whose older dog (13 years old) was attacked by one of hers after she carelessly released all 10 of her dogs into the park, right out the gate, without noticing the already crowded (and rowdy) space. I was under the impression that dog walkers were meant to walk their clients' dogs, not release them into a space where their personal needs aren't met and where they become a terror. I suppose this review is more a critique of the clientele rather than the space itself-great park if you're there early enough to avoid the crowds and the off-kilter dog to human ratio. Keep an eye out for her signature purple leashes and avoid her at all costs. read more

One of my favorite dog parks to take my dogs to in the city. It's actually one of the few dog parks that are fully enclosed. Being in Golden Gate Park, it is probably the largest dog park in the area. It can get very dusty since the entire enclosure is dirt and when the dogs run around, it gets kicked up in the air. During the day, this is a favorite spot amongst some of the dog walkers. At night it is usually not too bad either. In all my instances, I've never run into a mean dog and have yet to encounter a dog fight. You'll still find some owners who are rude, but it's not as bad as other dog parks I've been to. read more

I don't really understand why this is a training area rather than a dog park, but whatever it is, I love it! I have always loved animals, all animals. And even though one of my roommates has cats and I don't have a dog anymore (RIP Buster), dogs are still my favorites, so whenever I go to Alamo Square or Duboce Park, I'm always introducing myself to people's dogs. But this place is better than a typical dog park because it's in the middle of Golden Gate Park, so in addition to being excited to be unleashed and among other canines, the dogs have all kinds of fresh air to breathe and odd smells (the bison paddock isn't far from here) to sniff. Oh, and the Yelp map is kind of inaccurate. From the Richmond District, go south on 36th Avenue into the park. Make a right as soon as you can (across from Spreckels Lake) and follow the road until it dead-ends. Turn left, and you'll be at a parking lot. The Dog Training Area is on your right. So... Just so we're clear there is a total of 4 dog play areas in Golden Gate Park and this is the only one that is gated. Sure, when you finally find it, and you look at the sandy area without a patch of grass to be seen in this fenced area, it looks a bit sad. But the happiness of the dogs is all that really matters and that's what makes this place great. We've taken our dog a few times here and it has been great for tiring her out. There seems to always be someone there whether that's someone with just their own dog or a variety of dog walkers which means you've got a lot of variety in canines running around. read more

It's nice for a dog to run around. Big open area for playing. Love it here really nice area for my husky to play in. My husky had fun playing with all the dogs. He really enjoyed himself. The bonus part is that it is gated so no need to worry about them leaving your sight. Only downside is that people would bring to many dogs that they need to take care of so they would not take care of cleaning up after their dogs. There's a great mix of dogs and there are usually dogs here :) I've been here in the morning, afternoon and evening and there are usually dogs galore regardless of when you decide to come. I mean, I don't have a ton of standards when it comes to dog parks. Let it just have dogs so my pup can run around and exhaust himself. Let it also be decently sized and this park was fairly sized. If you're in the area and need a FENCED dog park, you should give this park a go. read more

So I've been to this park several times with my dog and he really likes it. It's the largest fenced in dog park I've been to in the city and our dog (a terrier) really needs room to run in order to tire him out. It's an all sand park so you and your dog will get dirty. Very dirty. But I don't really mind that so much. Just don't stop by there if you're wearing something nice- that's for sure. That being said, the type of people and dogs who frequent this park tend to be... different. What I mean by that is that it seems to be very cliquey with the same group of people always being there- and some of the dog walkers that go there with big groups of dogs really should not- because some people bring really bad dogs to the park. What seems to be common there is one crazy large dog who picks fights with everyone until it escalates and the owner doesn't do a whole lot to stop it. This seems like the lazy man's dog park sometimes. If you go on the weekends in the afternoon you get the worst dogs, but if you go early in the morning on a weekday you seem to get better behaved dogs. I've been there a few times when fights have broken out- not with my dog thank goodness- but it's about half of the time we go there. I still go there because it seems to be the only thing that wears my dog out- but if you don't have good control over your dog, have a dog that doesn't necessarily do well with other dogs, or have a very timid dog, this is probably not the park for you. read more

This is our new go-to place for our doggies. Easy parking. HUGE area! Soft sandy dirt stuff. Beautiful surroundings! We prefer going during the week around 1-2 pm and we don't mind the dog walkers at all---more doggies to tire out our crazy puppy! There is a parking lot but we usually park on the street to get a mini-walk before the craziness. Overall a great open area to get some exercise for your dogs! read more

She mentioned they just came from the dog park, huh? dog park? She told us it was 5 minutes from the lake and we found it! There were lots of friendly dogs. First thing I noticed no double gate! It's like a gigantic sandbox for dogs. Semi-Clean but really dusty. I bring my puppy several times a month to socialize her and she likes chasing the other dogs. There are only several dog parks in the city and if you live near golden gate park this would be the only on available. One of the problems is that there isn't a separation between large dogs and small dogs, and sometimes I fear that my feisty puppy will get eaten by larger dogs. But the several times I've been here all the large dogs are well behaved and ignores my puppy as she chases and barks at them. There are a good amount of dogs here and they have plenty of parking (usually a problem in golden gate park, but not here). What I recommend: Fort Funston would be the better alternative, but if you live near this dog park, it will be suffice for socializing your dog and tiring him/her out. read more

This place is huuuuuge. BUT it is quite unkept. It smells bad, there's hardly any grass. People aren't great about picking up their dog's poop. There's loads of dog walkers that bring huge groups of dogs with them, and that's ok but how could you possibly keep track of all of them. This place needs TLC. This is one of the parks where I wish my Westie Yayo was a Scotty. Everytime he comes here, he turns brown. But I love how it is fenced and gated so I never have to worry! Plenty of parking! Great dog area! Large fenced-in space for dogs to run around. I recently found this place because I was tired of small, crowded fenced-in dog parks with aggressive dogs. This place is pretty large, and because of that it doesn't ever seem crowded. It gives my large breed puppy (5 mo.) plenty of space to run free, play with other dogs, and work on his re-call skills. It's a huge fenced area of sand/dirt. Plenty of room for doggies to run, but not much in the way of grass, trees, or really anything other than a few benches. On the afternoon I went, there were maybe 50+ or so dogs and their assorted humans. Mostly bigger dogs, some in groups, other individual dogs with their owners. It seemed pretty mellow and all the dogs seemed basically friendly. I thought my dog, a big shepherdy mutt who loves to run around with other dogs, would enjoy herself. But she is used to fewer dogs at a time, and she was all, OMG dog overload, someone just chased me and drooled on my head I want to leeeeeave! So instead we went on a nice leashed walk in Golden Gate Park, which is an awesome place to stroll around with one's pup, with lots of little trails to explore, bison to ogle, things to smell, and places to sit. I gave the dog park 3 stars for the security of the fence, the large area, and the beautiful surroundings (also the ease of parking), although it is kind of barren inside. It's not my dog's cup of tea, aparently, but it seems like a cool dog park anyway. read more

This is the closest fenced in dog park in my neighborhood. But definitely not Lucy's favorite. A little hard to find the first time, but once you find it, there is plenty of parking. HUGE fenced in dirty patch. Great for big dogs that need a lot of space. However be prepared for your furry friend to get dirty, as it is as previously mentioned, a dirt patch and sometimes a mud patch. If you have a small dog like Lucy, mornings are the best time of day to bring your little buddy. I made the mistake a few times of coming later in the day. Mid day is hoards of dog walkers with their large groups of dogs, each dog walker had at least 10 dogs. There must have been something close to 80 dogs with minimal supervision, not a good thing in my book. Lucy was immediately swarmed by a bunch of big dogs one tha kept nipping at her and chasing after her. Not seeing the dog walker responsible for the mean dog, I scooped Lucy up and we went to another part of the park, and experienced more of the same. Too many dogs, Not enough supervision, TOO CRAZY! Evenings are better on the superviosn front. mostly owners bringing their pups for a romp after work hours. but still mostly big dogs romping around in the dirt patch, or as another reviewer called in a giant litter box! This can be a nice park for big dogs, if you supervise you pup and come at the right time. read more

I used to bring my dog here but since there isn't a small dog area it could get dangerous. I recall an incident where there were dogs without owners present. Bad owners or walkers leave the dog there without supervision and my dog got attacked and the owner wouldn't come forward. so Beware, especially If you have a small dog that is not capable of defending themselves against big dogs i.e. pits, rots and wolf hybrids in the same yard. There needs to be a seperate play area for small dogs. read more

This park is just "OK". It's good to have a dog park in the area that is fenced in for people who have dogs that like to run a muck. Unfortunately, I have learned that a lot (not all) of dogs that need to be fenced in, are untrained and don't listen to their owners. Therefore, I have witnessed more than a couple of fights here. I like to use this park in the evening when I visit my best friend who lives a block away. I would also recommend coming either early morning or evening times. In the middle of the day, there are about 75 dogs that are brought there by (so-called) "professional" dog walkers. The dog walkers there are so morbidly obese and all they do are stand around talking to each other and smoking cigarettes. They're so lazy and don't even pay attention to the dogs. Who the hell pays for this service? Other than the idiotic people that come here, it's an alright park. The nice man who up keeps the place keeps it pretty clean and always has poop bags stalked and makes sure there isn't a ton of poop laying around everywhere. read more

I give it 4 stars because I do not like the dirt. They need more grass. Plus it gets super dusty and sometimes muddy too. My dog sometimes like to roll in the dirty -.- He normally gets super dirty here compared to the other dog park he's been to. It took me a few trips to Golden Gate Park to find this place lol. It's hidden deep behind the lake. Anyways, people here are absolutely super friendly and they understand dogs. I never encounter one rude or mean person. Maybe I have but very rarely. I mean you normally get that one person who sort of ruins it all for everyone. My dog is aggressive toward big dogs. The first time I came here, I was welcome by a nice lady asking about my dog and I told her my situation that I'm trying to train him. She was very understanding and she made me feel comfortable. I didn't let my dog off leash not because I was scared he's gonna snap at the dog, but dog owners snapping back at me like at Stern Grove which is one reason why I stopped going there. They're too many mean old folks there and snobby. Anyways, I only take him here when I'm staying at my boyfriend's place. My dog has literally gone from the crazy barking dog to a calmer dog. Still need some more training here and there, but for the most part he is good. There is a regular at the dog park who is normally there almost every day with his big dog Gabby or Dabby? I don't know breed she is. My dog used to always snap at her. After all of my hard work in training to him, he is now trying to initiate play with her. That's the joy of it all. Is him initiating play with a big dog that he once thought was his enemy to now a friend. I also met a nice lady who was very kind and understanding. She didn't mind the fact that my dog was snappy and all bits of crazy and even invited me to join her and her regular companions every saturday/sunday morning. Because of her, it has helped my dog behave a bit better because he got used to seeing those dogs. =) Yay for her and her dog! her dog doesn''t normally play with other dogs because she's older, but my suddenly her dog and my dog played with each other =). read more

Well, it's an enclosed dog area / 'park' in the middle of Golden Gate Park. Great place for your dog to socialize and be a dog. Our 22lb American Eskimo mix made friends with a Greyhound and ran with him all over the place. That was pretty neat to see. If you're used to places like Funston and Pine Lake, this isn't for you so don't bother. Pros: A place for a dog to be a dog. Lots of space to run. Fenced in if you're not 100% sure Fido will come back. Relatively easy to get to. Cons: Dusty...Very dusty. The fences are pretty low and some of the bigger dogs would be able to hop it with ease. Even our little guy eyed a few spots looking to jump. No frills - It's a dirt lot with a fence where dogs can play and meet others. read more

The dogs here are always very well behaved (as are the owners!). I think this is a fun place for our doggies to run about, but because of the dust and how unattractive it looks dog mommies/daddies may not be as enthralled with this "park". The benefit is that this park is fenced in, so you never have to worry about your doggy escaping or wandering away (or into the road). read more
