Good Kerala food is hard to find. This is a massive understatement, but we found it at Ghazal. The place itself is run very well, with a neat large interior, not aggressively over lit, but still not too dark. The staff are also extremely courteous, informing us each time we call about what's available that day and about new items. Dishes we always get are the chicken curry, avial and parotta. The chicken curry literally tastes like magic. The flavor is one I've yet to taste elsewhere, with perfect seasoning and spice and a luscious and creamy gravy. The avial is a tangy dish with a generous amount of mixed vegetables all coming together cohesively. All these dishes are tied together by the soft and oh-so-easy-to-tear parottas. Surprised I haven't reviewed this already. This is South Indian/Keralite cuisine and it doesn't disappoint. Their biriyani makes are delicious especially the chicken. It's spicy with generous and luscious portions of meat. They also have a different varieties such as fish, beef, mutton etc we love getting their parottas and South Indian chicken curry to go. Yum! Their Sunday buffet is also a good bet for a different variety of Keralite cuisine although I vastly prefer their takeout. The interior of the restaurant is nice and large enough for functions if quite dimly lit. Definitely check their food out if you're in the area! read more

One word. Hot. It felt like they could not afford an air condition, and to be honest because and because of that I did not want to stay here. Saldy it was a party and I was forced to be festive. I was sweating. Like it was more hot than the outside temperature. I'm still sweating and it has been over three hours. The food was south Indian and it was not all that. Simple and basic, and I am sure everyone is thinking because it is hot I'm judging hard on the food. That is not the case, the food was bland and didn't have very distinct flavor which south Indian or Indian food is known for. So please do understand the flavor was real but not as flavorful for an Indian restaurant. The main issue is that I am being cooked with the food. Like I do not enjoy it. It is sad that Indians are known for their must and this restaurant just make this happen easily for us. I really want to like this place more. I have been here 3 times for dinner and attempted to come back bad for lunch (Buffet). Every time for dinner I and my guest are the only ones in the restaurant. The small side room we were in was the only one with lights on. Over all it was dark and we could not help but feel as if we were intruding at closing time, (it was a week night at 7pm). The restaurant was a bit warm in all three occasions. The service was slow to be seated. There was nobody at the hostess station and we had to wait for someone to come out from the kitchen. As I said it was dark and we thought at first they were closed. Once we were seated the waitress was reasonably attentive. The food was good. And the portions were reasonable. Attempted to go for lunch to try their buffet but when I arrived I walked in, everything was dark, buffet chafing dishes were empty and cold and there was nobody around. I left. The food here is the real deal! I am a hard core Malayalee (person from Kerala, India)and I can vouch that this place makes a legit kozhi varatharacha curry (chicken curry made by frying and grinding the spices together), beef olathiyathe (beef fry with a thick reduced gravy, kerala barotta (bread), appam (rice based pancake or crepe from kerala), a solid kerala biryani among others. These would be my top recommendations. The restaurant is located in a strip mall, but once you enter, it a'int too bad. They cater to large take away customer base, so in house dining is not usually packed. They do have a buffet on the weekends... Give it a try.. you will most definitely like it. read more

Came here on a Sunday night around 6:30 with my husband and we were the only ones here, aside from what appeared to be a staff meeting. The lights were dim and it was a little awkward. Food took a really long time, but it was good. The vegetable pakoras were a good appetizer and I ordered the Chicken Varutharacha curry and the hubby ordered lamb biriyani--which has lots of cashews for all your allergy afflicted people. Decent food for really cheap, but not worth the wait for dining in. I think they are more popular with their take out and catering than their dining services. read more

Disclaimer: I have NOT eaten in house at the buffet. I have only gotten food catered from them. About 1-2 times a month, we order a small tray of the goat biriyani from Ghazal for $30. We have ordered from other local Indian places as well, but Ghazal's has been the best. The biriyani comes with a side of raita (yogurt salad) and pickle. It is seasoned so well. If you are vegetarian or an egg-eater, you can order either veg biriyani or egg biriyani. I slightly prefer the veg biriyani because they don't just "leave the meat out"-- they actually add a ton of really well seasoned vegetables like cauliflower, potatoes, carrots, etc. which leave you full and satisfied (and sometimes make you consider becoming a vegetarian). Only two very small drawbacks-- sometimes there is not a lot of goat meat in the tray. If there was an option, I'd pay a few more dollars and have some more meat. Similarly, there is no other sides that come with the dish, even papadam (which most places throw in for free)... it's not a big expense but would make the order a little more rounded out. I'll be the one to burst everybody's bubble.... Everybody gave it 4-5 stars and I trusted them. I was let down miserably. Let me begin by saying I'm Indian and my boyfriend is Turkish but when it comes to indian food, he's more indian than any of us. And we eat at Indian restaurants all the time. Goat fry: the flavor was good, but the meat had too many bones and the meat was very very very fatty. It was only 30% meat. Butter chicken: the chicken smelled old and the flavor was just not right. Saag paneer: tasted like rubber tires. We asked the waiter a couple times if the saag paneer is the creamy kind because we know there are 2 ways to make saag paneer. He kept insisting that it was the creamy kind... But it wasn't. That's money down the drain for us considering we didn't even touch it. My boyfriend who can eat enough for 5 people said, his exact words, "if I eat one more bite of this it will be a waste of calories, I would rather eat fast food". We left the restaurant with an empty stomach. I gave it 2 stars so that I don't upset my fellow yelpers who love this place; and the naan was good (but then again one would have to be a special kind of stupid to mess up naan. read more

Most folks divide Indian food into north and South Indian cuisine. There are four ( now five) states in south India and each one of them have their own culinary heritage. Ghazal reminds of mid Travancore Christian cuisine from the state of Kerala where I grew up and they do that with perfection. Go there on. I had been looking for an Indian restaurant specializing south India Kerala cuisine in Houston for many years. I was told by one of my colleagues that Ghazal India Cafe was recently opened with Kerala seafood dishes on its menu. He is from Kerala and likes the food there. My wife and I went there for lunch today. We had Fish Alleppey, Malai Kofta, Vegetable Biryani and Garlic Nann. The food were delicious and the service was excellent. The Fish Alleppey was as good as I had tasted in Kerala over many trips there for work. The restaurant is located near the junction of US90 and Murphy road in Stafford. The food is very different from many Indian restaurants in town. We will definitely go back. read more

Went there for the Sunday lunch buffet. The meat in the goat curry was not fully cooked and tender. The chicken curry and tandoori also weren't upto the mark. The vegetarian dishes were also very mediocre. The Gulab jamun in the dessert was semi-cooked. Overall experience was poor and will not visit again. Over the last 15 years, my husband (who has also frequently travelled to India for business) and I have tried about every Indian restaurant in and around Houston, on average once a week. The food at Ghazal is absolutely delicious, very fresh, delicately spiced, and so different from the usual Indian places since this is typical Kerala cuisine. A couple of years ago my cousin threw a party here. When the party was done there was left over food and my cousin wanted to take the food home since he paid for it. Unfortunately, they wouldn't let him for some reason...which means they recycle their food for the next day and nothing is fresh.
