Butter Paneer Kadai Masala (back), Chana Masala (middle) and Palak Paneer (front)
    Diana C.

For the past four weeks, my husband, sister and I have been on the search for a five star worth Indian restaurant to try. Given the plethora of Indian restaurants in Houston, surely this wouldn't be difficult. And luckily for us, on the fourth try, we found it. Udipi Cafe is located right off of highway 6 in a large shopping center that has quite the array of food choices. From fast food, to Vietnamese to Indian food, there's plenty of options for all. We decided to try out Udipi after a failed attempt at buying dinner at the grocery store Keemat, in the same center as Udipi. We ordered a few dishes and very not disappointed with this vegetarian restaurant. Butter Paneer - like butter chicken, but with cheese instead of chicken. I was a bit hesitant hearing my husband order this, but after the first bite, I was sold. Chicken who?? The creamy texture paired with the flavor explosion in your mouth, guaranteed you'll be back for more. Chana Masala - my favorite of the 3. How can they make chickpeas taste SO good?? It's such a simple sounding dish, yet the depth of flavor amazes me. Highly highly recommend this one. Saag Paneer - I've made many attempts at making saag paneer during the past year in quarantine. Unfortunately, I have never come close so I am so glad that Udipi makes this dish so well. Not sure what they do, but it's better than your typical saag paneer, that's for sure. Masala Dosa - this dish was okay. The potatoes were good but the actual dosa itself was pretty standard. This came with two dipping sauces and sambal. Each entree was served with basmati rice and they were more generous with the rice serving than the other Indian restaurants we went to! I will undoubtedly be back to try more vegetarian dishes and recommend you do the same!

Food was good, ambiance was okay, service they need to improve as order took more then expected time. But overall it's a nice place and I recommend try their Mix Pakora, Dosa.

Went in as a large group and ordered quite of bit of food. Only managed 1 picture. The owner was there and she was very very sweet and gave recommendations. Everything we ordered was flavorful. The price was similar to other Indian restaurants. Inside decor/ambiance is dull. Some people might not like it, personally I'd prefer bland decor over gimmicky vibes a lot of restaurants like to do ( ex: bollywood vibes at Indian restaurants or sombreros at mexican restaurants) If you are wanting to try real Indian food that is not your popular butter chicken & masalas then this is the restaurant for you to really expand your Indian cuisine palate.

South Indian restaurant with some falvourful dishes and wide variety of chaat, I have been here several occasion as I am a dosa lover, their dosa are always crispy and fresh, ragda Pattie's was good but would like to make it spicy next time, idli was not fresh and won't try again, special rava masala and any other dosa you try you won't be disappointed, I hope the owner spend some money to bring the ambience and look alive here.

The service and portions were great. But I felt that the aloo could have been spiced a bit better.

Sandwiched between a department store and an ice creamery, it blends in a little too easily with the rest of the strip mall plaza and would be easy to glance over in any other scenario. Luckily for me (#1), I stumbled across their simple, but flavorful lunch buffet and haven't looked back since. The restaurant looks small from the outside and is most definitely a modest interior with very minimal decor (#2) and a handful of tables. The family running the place is incredibly friendly and does a good job of keeping the place clean, replenishing items on the buffet and labeling the items properly. Some immediate standouts included: a wonderfully sweet and addicting mango lassi, a silky yet delicate coconut korma fish curry, a strangely addicting garlic naan that paired nicely with their butter chicken, a nice crunchy kadhi pakora, along with some veggie friendly and delicious chana masala + malai methi paneer. The mixed appetizers were a blend of fried foods, which included a not-so-mini samosa(s) and a very crunchy aloo tikki. While I wasn't in love with the roti, vegetarian spring rolls, or the goat achari, I can tell they were only slightly less appealing due to how wonderful everything else was. I'd happily give these items another shot on a future. Finishing it all off with a delightfully sweet galub jamun made for a perfect ending to the meal. $15 is a solid price in 2025, but I really just appreciate that the food was simple, fresh, and abundant with a little pretension and lots of opportunity for solo dining. ___________ (#1) Trust me, I'm the real winner. (#2) And fabulous sign that reads: "Delight in every bite, but waste not a single bite. - ChatGPT"

We ordered the goat, spinach, some chicken and some goat rice as seen in the photos. Official names- Goat Biryani, Potohari Goat Karahi, Aashik Beef Kabob, Palak Paneer, Classic Chai and Garlic Naan BUT!! the one thing is appetizers coming out the same time you order a main meal- normally I would subtract a star... I love the classic chai because it's not sweet and great ratio of milk to tea. You can choose your spice level on dishes and also note that all goat items have bones. The ambience is very cultural, colorful and peaceful. Quick service and comfortable seating. Our waitress was also kind enough to explain the different dishes and sauce bases. So don't feel intimidated and definitely come hungry! yummy!
