I want to start out by giving my tour guide, Betty, credit for her effort and knowledge. She clearly was very knowledgeable and wanted to make the experience fun and interesting. However, I think the combination of acting / being scary and staying in character combined with telling the ghost stories and legends was an interesting mix. He's dressed up as some sort of English/pirate/town drunkard/D&D cape-wearing guy and I swear I see an Urban Outfitters tag on his billowy poet blouse. Can't really figure it out. The right side of the trolley starts yelling about how they're from Jersey, something about drinking whiskey, and some friend of theirs that's also on the tour named Henry. In fact, during the ENTIRE tour, this group loudly only talks about Jersey, whiskey, and some friend of theirs that's also on the tour named Henry. Ugh. Meanwhile, Urban Outfitters billowy poet shirt guy is asking for my name because he's trying to make me yell "boo!" at people innocently walking down the street. "Nah.. that's okay," I say. I feel like a spoil sport, but I'm like old and stuff and I don't feel like yelling at people I don't know that much. The tour is sort of interesting, but I felt like our aforementioned passengers detracted from us enjoying this tour to its fullest. I felt like the information given to us was scattered and our tour guide was constantly trying to talk over the Jersey group or have some sort of banter with them, but I can't really knock off points for the bonehead clientele. Everyone's a freaking comedian. Our tour guide was funny and personable. He gave my BF the nickname of Camus and me the nickname of Darth Sidius. I questioned his authenticity if he knew who Darth Sidius was, but he sort of brushed that off. He seemed to have a lot of knowledge about the events in the area, but we felt he didn't give us enough detail about certain goings on--lots of stuff was merely glossed over. By the end, I was yelling at some people walking on the street for no other reason than that they are people walking on the street. "Boo, you stupid striped-shirt wearing motherfucker!" Not sure why everyone is bitching and complaining on here..But, I went with 11 people! I have a horror group that I run in Boston and the entire group every SINGLE one of them absolutely loved it! It was fun, informative and we laughed from beginning to end! We went on the 7:00 trolley. It was a crisp and clear night so it made being in the graveyards just the perfect bit of "spookyness"!! Our guide was really energetic and really funny! He jumped right at you and really got the trolley going. If you came to be scared to death..this isn't going to scare you to death! It was interesting to hear about the Boston Strangler and all sorts of little details of Boston along the way. These people really get into their job and do it well! Last night I decided to take the train to this tour, only to find out the train was down! It delayed my train ride by an hour and I was late for my ghost tour! These amazing people here at Ghosts and Gravestones made sure I could meet up with the rest of my group by PERSONALLY taking me to meetup with my group. They drove me by a smaller suburban to the first stop that the trolley was at. I was only late by 13(ahh..an unlucky number) minutes. Not only did this wonderful sweet woman drive me, but she told me all the informative little things about the North End I missed that they spoke about on the trolley tour!! Now how cool can you get come on? They really went above and beyond their customer service! They were amazing all around! I definitely would go back. We loved every minute of it. People complaining about yelling at people in the streets..oh come on...it's all in fun...Learn to laugh a little..LIFE'S too short..GEEZ! 2 hours FULL of Murder, Ghosts, Graveyards and Boston's most famous Legends? Bitch, sign me up. Even if you have lived here all your life or are a transplant wanting to be enriched in a little history of the darker kind.....or maybe you are just obsessed with all things mortal.... the Ghost and Gravestones tour is well worth the $30. If you are the type of person that is easily embarrassed and may possibly see every person you know while driving through Boston in an open ride....Wear a hat....First, you ride around Boston in the "Trolley of the Doomed"........ an old Englishmen Grave Digger in costume with full on accent, teaches you all about the darker side of Boston. You are schooled on the Angel of Death, The Boston Strangler and some places that have proved to be haunted and damned forever by the creatures of the night. Boooowahahahahaha haaaaaaaaaa. A nice surprise for my lazy ass was a walking tour through Cobbs and Granary burial grounds. Not only are they home to famous guys such as John Hancock and Samuel Adams, but a short visit allows the opportunity to be introduced to the significance of Tombstones from that era and the meanings behind their selected designs-I found this fascinating as a matter of fact. Sure....anyone can hop on their computer and google the ever loving life out of "Haunted Boston" or "Boston Ghosts".... (And maybe even gain more knowledge than by going on this tour).........yet nothing beats seeing things with your own eyes............ or that feeling. That feeling of being "spooked" by the end of the night. A little jumpy. A little on edge.... You know........that feeling you get when you shut off the last light to go to bed and you run quickly to your room because you SWEAR someone is right behind you..... or maybe they could even be under your bed..... ready to grab your ankles as you jump under the covers. This was such a great time. One of my friends was nervous about the spookiness of it, but ended up learning a lot and was only scared once by the driver. (He snuck up behind her before we began the tour and waited for her to turn around. She screamed, mission accomplished.) Our tour guide, "Barnaby" was great. He really knows his stuff, and was funny to boot. I had such a fun time learning some of Boston's lesser known history. (For example, duels to the death are still technically legal in Faneuil Hall, provided the mayor shows up!) I would totally recommend this tour for anyone who likes history but doesn't necessarily want to do run-of-the-mill tours. I've lived in Boston for almost my entire life and I've never been on this touristy endeavor. I wouldn't say its a must do for every Bostonian but if you enjoy the occasional cheese-fest then this is right up your alley. For the most part I agree with the other reviews, it is moving theater (something different), it is extremely cheesy (hmmm queso) and uber touristy (What do you mean, i can't parrk my carr in harrvard yarrd?). So you board a bus over by the Marriott on Atlantic Ave and you're greeted by some people dressed up as the deceased. These ghoulish tour guides lead you on a tour of two graveyards and narrate a few amusing stories about the morbid history of Boston. It was more educational and funny than it was scary, which was fine by me. I would say this tour would be great for everyone from about 8 to a senior citizen. I would highly advise if you're of age to grab a cocktail first or maybe three. I went to the Intrigue cafe at the Boston Harbor Hotel and had a few cocktails and some savory appetizers first, you know... to get in the mood for a ghost tour. This is my type of tour! Being a Ghost enthusiast and when I read about this tour I just HAD to do it! Thankfully the boyfriend was ok with it (he's not into the whole ghost and horror thing as I am) and we ended up doing this tour the first night we were in the city. The night tours fill up fast, so I'd recommend scheduling one a few nights in advance. Sure, the tour is cheesy with cheesy tour guides who get decked out in character. But, this is what makes the tour so fun and memorable. Our tour guide was Mercy and you could tell that she loves her job a lot (which is amazing!). She interacts with you, so be prepaired to laugh at all her cheesy dance moves and singing. Despite all that, we also learned a lot about the ghosts that haunt Boston and the cool stories about what happened to said ghosts before they passed on. We also visited two cemeteries, which I loved! We were able to see the grave sites of Paul Revere and the founder of Harvard, which was amazing! I'd highly recommend this tour to anyone, young and old alike. It is just so fun and interesting that the 1.5 hours will just fly by without you realizing it. This trolley ride with a macabre twist was one of the first things I bookmarked in Boston. I seized the opportunity to finally go while Wonder Twin was in town visiting; she's even more into the scary, supernatural shit than I am! Our guide Devlin Cormack had a pretty believable Irish accent & stayed in character the entire time! He told stories about Boston's seedy side: boston strangler, lizzy Borden, a nurse who killed over 300 of her patients, etc. we visited two burial grounds, which became spookier as the sun went down. Difference between a cemetery & burial ground: the latter can have as many as 10 people under one headstone. Three stars instead of four because $35/per person is a little steep for this level of entertainment that is more camp than scary. There were quite a few kids on our tour, so it couldn't have been too frightening. Specifics: We met our group in front of the Marriot Long Wharf on Atlantic Ave. Tour lasts about 70 minutes. read more

I was quite disappointed in this ghost tour, especially after reading so many rave reviews. I knew going into the tour that it was run by actors in full costume, complete with fake blood. Although this made me wary, I figured that the tour itself must be fabulous for so many people to overcome this fact and provide great feedback. Unfortunately, my gut reaction was right. It wasn't really the actors that were the problem. They all played their parts well and kudos to them for staying in character. I think I've just become a ghost tour snob after going on so many. This tour lacked the engaging stories that most ghost tours possess. You spend about half the time on a trolley, where stories may be told as you quickly pass by the building where it occurred. However, many stories lacked an "anchor point" and seem like they could have been a story about Anywhere, USA. Oh yeah - one slight annoyance is that if you book your tickets online, you still have to call in to make a reservation for the time you would like. read more

What's up with all the grumpy reviews? This isn't a Broadway show, so if you expect that caliber of acting go to a bloody Broadway show. It isn't meant to be a serious affair, although factually correct it is. It's, you know, supposed to be...gasp...fun! And it IS loads of fun. I've been meaning to do this tour since moving to Massachusetts 3 years ago. Finally got around to it last night. Our guide was Franklin Lynch and he was fabulous. He was funny, engaging, sharp with the wit, and most importantly, a great storyteller. Over the top? Nope, just right. Let's review though, this is supposed to be fun and each guide is a character of somebody who has long since departed. Over the top is to be expected. These guys and ghouls have to be quick on their feet and entertain a group of both locals and tourists....not easy. I would have smacked the lady that was on her phone the whole time or the other one who "didn't do hills"....um the ticket tells you there will be walking and yeah, it's Copp's HILL. Or the two errant parents that brought kids under the age of 13 along. They weren't scared, but they weren't too interested. Yes, there is walking. It's in no way difficult but for some it might be a bit much. Definitely wear comfortable shoes as the website and tickets advise. A small bottle of water isn't a bad idea and do hit the restroom before departing. These tours are also rain or shine. It's just the right length at about an hour and a half. It's also great to know that part of your ticket price goes toward maintaining the sites you enjoyed along the way. Tips are also appreciated and well deserved. First stop was Copp's Hill - rich in history and also has a beautiful view of the Zakim Bridge. Next stop was the Granary Burying Ground, where you see the grave of Paul Revere. Then to Boston Common where public humiliation and executions took place. Each tour is a little different, but this was ours and I learned all kinds of neat things about the city and each location. I won't spoil anything by being specific. Go, get spooked, learn something new, and dare I say it...have fun. This is truly a unique and wonderful tour. Not to be missed. read more

This was a fun little tour. Really a 3.5! The guides were theatrical, entertaining, and knowledgable beyond a script. You could definitely talk to them about some general history or go more in depth with the sights they take you on. If I had teens, this could be a great after dinner activity. I went with my boyfriend and the group consisted of couples approx (20, 30s, and 40s), a teen, and some older folks and adult families (a bit of everyone!). As the title implies, lots of cemetery stops. I thought it might hit more neighborhoods but stayed in North End/Beacon Hill/State street area. More walking and standing than I expected, so if you have difficulty getting around you may need to consider this. A nice activity to break up the monotony of dinner/bar and neighborhood walking. Approximately 1 hour 45 mins when all is said and done. We enjoyed it very much. read more

First, let me say that I've taken ghost tours all over the world and the United States. I've experienced good ones and bad ones, and this one was one of the bad. After reading mixed reviews here and on other sites, I decided to take a chance on this tour because I am traveling with older parents who have a hard time with a lot of walking. I should have listened to my gut and chosen another option... My family and I were on the 9pm tour last night. To begin, our guide was yelling in the trolley while trying to "connect" with us as an audience. He had real potential as a storyteller, but was too focused on making us laugh. The first graveyard was interesting, but the tour went downhill from there. In the second graveyard, we combined with another group and it made it nearly impossible to hear or see. In addition, this "graveyard guide" was terrible. He made inappropriate jokes, was generally disrespectful, and was a really bad actor. Seriously...he was bad. By the end of the tour, I found myself checking social media rather than enjoying the $38 dollar experience. I'm already in the process of getting my money back. This tour had real potential and definitely turned up short. Choose another option. read more

Personally, I felt this was a waste of money. Mid tour I wanted to leave because I was bored of the lame comedy show. The speaker was extremely loud on the bus, and overall this tour was actors acting obnoxiously. Nothing was scary about it. We walked through 2 graveyards and listened to some childish 'ghost' stories on the tour bus. The graveyards were very small. So called "spooky" stories. This tour was AWFUL!! Our first indication was some 'scary' guy was walking around the trolley bus banging on the side. It interrupted our conversations for sure. Then this British lady got on the microphone and started screaming. I assume that it was intended to get the crowd riled up. It begs the question...riled up for a ghost tour?? REALLY? The stories were stupid, there was ZERO historical facts given and the quantity of puns was ridiculous! We took a ghost tour in Savannah and it was excellent. We were genuinely embarrassed that we took our out of town guests on the tour since we all had Savannah to compare it to. I was excited to go on this fun tour around Boston, but my experience was absolutely ruined when they charged me six times what is listed online and refused to refund me the money back directly. They made me take these vouchers that they instructed me to mail away to get my money back in 6-8 weeks. I found this extremely unprofessional, as it was completely their fault that my credit card was charged extra. This tour is a complete scam and tourist trap. I would not recommend this to anyone I know. It has been two weeks since I went on the tour and management continues to ignore and not return my calls. It is sad because the tour was actually very fun, but being charged $150 over what I owed, and two weeks later still battling to get my money back really ruined the experience. Super fun cheese-fest! I have spent the past two weeks being a tourist in my hometown and tonight we capped it off with a Ghosts and Gravestones tour. We had no idea what to expect and some in our party were... mortified, so be prepared. This isn't a Spooky World type of tour... this is more like a B horror movie tour. The tour guides (Gravediggers!) are decked out in awesome costumery and have hilariously spooky stories surrounding their untimely demises. Get ready for cheap thrills - lots of getting snuck up on - good laughs, and to act like a fool. Seriously, if you don't want to be a goofball, get a map of Boston's haunted places and walk around yourself. If you DO want to be a goofball, get ready for a great time. The tour guides will regale you with great stories of famous Boston ghosts, take you walking through the North End and the Common, and have you screaming at passersby off of the trolley. But, like any interactive tour, the group makes it - so bring your craziest friends. We went on a 9:00 p.m. tour which was great for adults - it was already dark out, only other adults on the tour - but the tour is DEFINITELY kid-friendly. Just scary enough with enough jokes to keep the kiddos from having nightmares. If you're looking for something out of the ordinary to do in Boston, this is it. SO MUCH FUN! I went on this tour a few times over the course of the 4 years I lived in New England, and loved it every time. It was absurdly fun, and the tour guides were *hilarious.* Half the tour is on foot, the other half is on a spooky trolley bus. The guides told us historical tales and ghost stories, but kept everything light and fun. Most of them have proper improv and acting experience. I think one of them mentioned training with the Groundlings and UCB, and it totally showed. Seriously- I am a total lightweight when it comes to scary stuff and I recommend this tour to everyone. I would say it's worth $15, not $36. -at one point Barnaby left us with another guide in a graveyard. She was over the top in the wrong way. -they need to make it more entertaining if they're going to charge that much. Maybe more scenes acted out or something. HAD A BLAST! We were debating between this and the walking ghost tour due to reading the reviews and several saying this was "cheesy." We ended up choosing this one because our day walking tour from Boston common was HORRIBLE and super disappointing. Also this tour had several times available which just worked better with our plans. You so about half on the trolly and half off. It was a great time. Our guide, "Fiona", was FANTASTIC. From the moment we got on to the moment we left she was in character the entire time. She made sure to talk to everyone individually as they got on and just really seemed to love what she was doing. She told us so many interesting facts, there was never a dull moment. If I wanted a lame comedy act I would have went to an amateur comedy show - this had little material to work with. One or two lame stories and a visit to two graveyards. They show you some graves of great Americans and how there not ghosts. Save your money- not worth the money. I've been to other tours in major cities - this one was the worst. This was one of the best tours I've taken. I only got tickets for this tour because we were running out of things to do vacationing in Boston, but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking this tour as FIRST on your list of 'things to do' if you're a tourist. When I took the tour, it was the perfect night because it was very misty outside...well it wasn't that perfect because it was kinda drizzling and we were getting wet inside the trolley so we had to zip up the plastic windows and it was hard to see some of the sights we passed by. I guess it may depend on who you get as a tour guide too. We were lucky to get a charming young lady ghoul by the name of Maggie Poppins. She was very funny and was a great story teller. It wasn't as scary as I thought it would be, but very entertaining and worth every penny. At least you get to walk the graveyards at night which was really something to experience. I seriously recommend this tour. I personally don't really care for tours since they can get boring and you're stuck for however long, but with Ghost & Gravestones tour, I didn't want it to end...or at least I wish it was a bit longer. We had SO much fun on this tour. At first, when I saw people in costume, I was worried it would be hokey or people would do a lot of jump scares, but this is the real deal. Our guide was "Bernard Kingsley" and I wish I knew his real name to call him out because he was AMAZING. He made everyone laugh and he had a great way of telling all the stories and keeping people on their toes. My only complaint is that I wish it were longer because it went so fast and I could have easily passed another hour seeing sights and hearing stories without getting bored. 10/10. Save your money. The concept was great but our party of five, including a 15 and 23 year old, all agreed it was a huge disappointment. While our guide worked hard to stay in character, unfortunately, he gave us more unfunny jokes than real content. It's a shame because there are so many amazing stories to be told. When we were stuck in traffic, a good 10 minutes was spent on the history of George Washington which had nothing to do with ghosts or gravestones. Not that I don't like George, but it was totally irrelevant. Right in the middle of a lecture (by another cast member) in the Old Granary Burial Ground, our group was abruptly asked to return to the bus. It seems we were running late because of the earlier traffic and we had to leave to make room for the next group. We only heard one quick story there. It was also disappointing that our guide negatively referenced the Duck Boats multiple times. People only bash competition when they are insecure about their own product. I'd say read up on ghosts and gravestones and visit on your own. You'll learn a heck of a lot more and avoid a truly creepy evening. read more

Before I purchased tickets, I looked at reviews here on yelp. I noticed that most of it was great and there were reviews saying it was "corny" and "too high school theatre". I thought those people who wrote it were picky and boring but they were right. They took us in trolley and would share ghost stories that seem way too made up. The graveyards they took us to were interesting but the story telling was boring and I found myself day dreaming...a lot. If you like that corny stuff then it's good for you. Mediocre at best. We enjoyed the decorations on the trolley and (some of) the stories, but the worst part was the microphone. It had broken right before our tour, so we were involuntarily seated in the very back of the bus attempting to hear the tour guide over his thick (and fake) accent and the extremely loud trolley engine behind our ears. We could barely hear anything that was said on the trolley, and I feel like a backup microphone could have solved the issue easily. Bernard was amazing! A great actor and dripping with sarcasm -- which I appreciate. This isn't really a scary tour. But it is the best way to visit cemeteries -- which is after dark. Loved the bus driver and the fact that she was engaging and participated while the bus was parked. She dressed up and was rocking out with an owl in hand. Bernard was oddly attractive and if he decides in a career change he will be a great pole dancer at an all male review. There was a pirate who also was part of the cast and provided an interesting twist to the adventure. Without giving too much away I will just say GREAT JOB from everyone involved from the tart at the booth to the pirate who escorted us onboard the trolley. Awesome tour! It was hilarious and we heard some pretty interesting ghost stories and went to some graveyards at night, which was really interesting. I currently live in Salem so when my parents came in from out-of-state and asked to do a ghost tour in Boston, I was pretty hesitant. From the moment we stepped onto the trolley, however, I couldn't stop laughing. The tour guide, Lily Winters, was amazing! She started the tour with her backstory and then moved into the historical stuff. I really appreciated how dynamic her performance was as she ran up and down the trolley. There were 2 parts where we got out of the trolley and went into actual graveyards. This was a great way to see the sites up close without being too creeped out by the whole dead people thing. One note, the graveyards are pretty dark (which seems so obvious as I type this), but the flashlight on your phone will take care of that. I got a little spooked when Lily was talking about the Boston Strangler, but the rest of the tour wasn't particularly scary. I did hear one passenger complaint. At the end of the tour, the woman in front of me was mumbling about Lily's backstory not being relevant to history... this was kind of confusing because... you know... ghosts. But it seems like everyone else loved it! My parents definitely enjoyed themselves and have asked to go back next time they visit. read more
