I used to LOVE the people at this restaurant. The food is just average at best but service was good . Tonight we sat for 40 minutes with no food , no one checked on us , and we arrived around 4:40 in the afternoon and the place was not busy . We ordered burgers and fries , nothing complicated . Girl took our order and never returned . Finally Flagged someone down at 5:30 because we had to be somewhere at 6 . It was clear the food was not even started because they had "a Lot of orders rolling in ". That's carry out . We were first . She basically said we could just leave . I saw her speak to a manager before delivering this message . While sitting there I over heard another customer call the place "disgusting " And it felt like the staff was arguing . The food is good. The atmosphere is ok. The staff service is ok. The issue is they charge you when paying with a credit card. I know a lot of places are doing that however, it's not right. This is a cost of doing business. If they must charge it, then close the doors. This increases your total, causing a higher tip for the server. When you ask what could improve...EVERYTHING!!!! The name of the business changed from Sals to GIAs several years ago. Honestly, I feel that was a ploy on the owners part to confuse people into thinking a new restaurant popped up outside the lake. However, nothing about this place has changed. Atmosphere-same. Tables, chairs, and booth seating-has gotten worse. Booth seating is torn in places, uneven, it feels like inner-springs are digging in your buttocks, you don't want to sit there long "but maybe that's what they want." Food....normally I could find something nice to say. Unfortunately, this visit left me perplexed as to why people still eat here...realized, most are locals and like the comfortability. Nevertheless, food WAS NOT GOOD! Lacked flavor, no seasoning-even though we asked the server to let the cook know they were good to over-season and cook in butter....we had their special "Steak". Nothing special about it. Tough, no flavor, tasted like it had been in the freezer past its due date. Only decent part of this whole experience... our waitress was fantastic. She was young, perky, and eager to assist in anyway. My husband and I had to chuckle when we made a comment to our waitress about how bad the food was... We decided to give them a second chance and we ordered 2 chicken noodle soups. They have a lot of different vegetables in it with some chicken chunks but there's still no flavor just like the steaks we ordered. One thing is for sure is that they had a good portion of oil in the soups. I guess GIA restaurant can help you go the bathroom if you eat there or get it to go. read more

The food and the service are great. A very nice place. We always get a delicious meal at a reasonable price.

I do all take-out. It's a go-to for the family. My favorites: Shrimp Scampi or the Large Garden Salad with Grilled Shrimp with Ranch.

I have ordered takeout from here a couple times as well as eaten in the restaurant. The restaurant itself has a nice ambiance, the staff is friendly and attentive, the food is good but not great. Some of their menu items tend to be greasy, such as the Marsala. I typically stick to pastas that are served with their meat sauce. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant. read more

First time back in six months. Last review gave it five stars, this visit was 4 stars. Overall there was little flavor in my dish compared to past visits. The robust garlic flavor in my chicken marsala was missing and the salad did not taste fresh. I know the restaurant has a sign stating they are short staffed. I've been here twice. The first time was when it was still named Sal's. Me and my mother were the only two people in the restaurant. After 30 minutes they finally came to take my order. Ordered my food and 40 minutes later I still didn't have my food and hadn't seen a single employee so I left. 2nd time was when it changed the name to Gia's. Ordered a pickup order over the phone and was told it'd be ready in 20-30 minutes. Showed up about 30 minutes later and they didn't even know what my order was and expected me to place another order. This place is a hidden gem. One would never believe that you could find quality Italian fare in a tiny county, yet there it is.

Great lunch here today. Stopped in at and odd hour (Saturday at about 3:30 pm) so we kinda had the place to ourselves. Server was super friendly and attentive, so we feasted on some pizza, chicken Marsala, bruschetta, and salad. Everything was very good, the chicken Marsala was excellent. I don't usually do this even when unhappy, but I was EXTREMELY unhappy and perhaps this will help the owners. For a year or two, we had take out Pizza a number of times and it was always good. Last time was about 6 months ago. We tried again tonight and it was perhaps the most tasteless Pizza I have ever had as well as a super thin (way too thin) crust and a skimping on cheese and sauce (even if it was too sweet). Skimping seems to be an operative word. Just a terrible experience all around. I'll stop there, customers deserve better. read more

Great restaurant! It's clean, delicious, not too rowdy and owned by a great local family. Saw a thing in the local paper today awarding them with a plaque from the Knights of Columbus for their support of KOVAR which helps Virginians with intellectual disabilities. Good stuff! read more

We had lunch today and it was very disappointing. The salads are rather stingy, to be fair my husband asked for more lettuce and was given a second salad bowl. The bow tie rolls were stale and dried out. We had seafood pasta dishes that were generous servings but unremarkable. Needless to say we do not plan to return. read more

After a long day of traveling we stopped in to pickup a few burgers with fries. They seriously lacked flavor and one was not fully cooked. They're definitely frozen patties. The fries however, were very good. After calling the restaurant, they did remake the burger that wasn't done. I appreciated them trying to correct the mistake. When you pull on to Turkey Sag, you will see Villa Nova on the right and Sals is on the left, back in the corner. I am only giving Sals 4****'s because this was a first stop and we only got a pizza, which was excellent! I'm in Scottsville a 1 hr round trip, and will be making additional trips. Born and raised in Philly, so I'm particular about Pizza, Hoagies and Cheese Steaks and there not as expensive as that other place. read more

After years of enjoying Villa Nova across the street (and loving it), we decided to get a takeout pizza from Sals, sort of by circumstance. Our neighbors at the Lake had said good things. We, however, don't totally agree with our neighbors opinion. Coming from a family with fairly high pizza standards, we have high expectations. After some confusion on the phone with a young girl who must have been new, we ordered a large with half pepperoni/feta and half pepperoni/mushrooms/onions. It looked yummy upon opening the box. After tasting and eating a piece though, the pizza was so salty! Not sure if it's the mozzarella or the pepperoni but WOW. Also, there were so many feta cubes that it overpowered the whole pizza. I prefer a thicker crust, and this crust was fairly sub par. The mushroom and onions side was okay, but for only two toppings, it was horribly soggy. Sorry Sals, we might be back to try dinner but looks like we're sticking with the NY style pizza at Villa Novas. read more

The food at Sal's was good, but the service was less than stellar. While we were seated immediately, there was at least a 10 minute wait for a waiter to even come and take our drink orders. And worse, we were able to overhear two waiters debating on who would take our table! Unbelievable! Once our waitress finally came...she was very friendly and good. Our food was delivered promptly and was very good. The evening went downhill when we could overhear (once again) the staff talking business. Someone was talking about how she had come up short by $47 for the night. Evidently someone had skipped out in their tab. Then a gentleman came in for a take out order...but the guy who took his order never gave it to the chef. So the guy left without his meal. The poor customer service will keep me from visiting Sal's again. read more

This is the second time they have left things out on a pickup order. What has made it the last time we will ever order from them or go for service, is how they would not properly fix the mistake. I had to pick it up to take to my parents who are immobile and when we called we were told that they could not refund her card but only come in person for cash. Oh, happy was the day when I found out Sal's was coming to the frequently-changed-hands location behind the Jefferson Pharmacy/ Happy Tails building! My family and I had occasionally gone to the Sal's in Fork Union, but that was too much of a drive for a quick weeknight dinner. Sal's Italian Restaurant is just that, real deal Italian from people that know what they're doing. The prices are exceptionally reasonable. I will say this, though, my family and I have never actually eaten inside the restaurant. We've tried a couple of times, but the place was always slammin', and given the fact that we live less than 3 minutes away, it's easier to place our order and take it home with us. Their pizza crust is thin, crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, with a satisfyingly wide array of topping choices available. Their strombolis are everything one could ask for, crunchy crust hugging assorted toppings and mozzarella cheese, with marinara for dipping...man, I could go for one right now! They offer calzones, too, filled with toppings and ricotta cheese, if that's your thing...but it's not mine so you'll have to try that for yourself. They offer all the "Parms": Chicken Parmigiana, Veal Parmigiana, Eggplant Parmigiana, Meatball Parmigiana, both in entree and sub sandwich forms. My husband's tried them all, and claims the Veal is the best: thin, crispy on the outside but tender inside and not too salty. The kids menus is fantastic, it's obvious whomever planned it knows what little ones actually like to eat. Chicken tenders, scratch made Mac-n-cheese, spaghetti with a choice of tomato or meat sauce (with meatballs, sausage or baked mozzarella cheese as options), baked ziti, hamburger or mini one topping pizza. Honestly, the portions are large enough to satisfy a lot of adult appetites, so be prepared for your child to tell you they're full! Made-to-order soups, salads, classic Italian dishes, fantastic seafood, even amazing burgers...there's bound to be something for everyone in your family at Sal's! read more

Solid Italian place. For the area it's quite good. I wad happy with the Chicken Marsala and the Picatta was also good. I really liked the eggplant fries. Canolli was on the menu which is always a good thing but the shell was clearly bought. Not bad but I've had a lot better. read more

Solid, solid food. We are local fans of this place. We brought our visiting parents here recently because my dad like this place too and was craving Italian. I had a pie that must have made the chef shudder with my ingredient selection and in the future I will not order the garlic, they apparently don't roast their garlic, it goes right on there! That's a small complaint, almost everything else is fantastic. My wife and mom and dad all ordered proper plates of food, dad the veal, wife the chicken, mom the triple threat dish with Alfredo, chicken parm and lasagna. All of the plates were gorgeous and very large portions and all of them loved it. I tasted all of it and it was very good. I often get my favorites, the mussels appetizer as a meal and the linguini clam sauce. Always good, and their marinara/tomato sauce is so good it would taste good on a napkin or a flip flop. Only complaint I have ever had is a slim staff at late lunch. It has taken a while to get served and get out at times. At our recent dinner there were no staff problems. Also, the staff is a little shy on knowlege of the menu, especially the specials. I dont think they have metings like some other restaurnats do before opening. read more
