If I could give 0 stars I would. I wanted to buy some steaks at a market and came here because it had good reviews. I have no idea how this place has positive reviews. It's not only disgusting and dirty but the butcher was beyond rude to me. This corner market/deli has been in New Bedford FOREVER! I don't know how many years, but I know a very very long time. Well, I have had food from there through other people's cookouts, etc. but had never gone in there and purchased anything myself. So I finally go there so I could buy a couple of sandwiches. The place was pretty much what I expected. It was simple and sort of reminded me that it was stuck in the 60's or 70's, which is fine with me. I don't judge, plus I love those times. Anyway, we got 2 sandwiches, one a honey turkey & honey ham with just cheese and mayo, and the other being a honey turkey with cheese, veggies & mayo. Both on Portuguese pops. For something so simple and not fancy they were DELICIOUS! And only $2.99 each! Loved it! I will be back very soon for more. read more

Was brought here by a local to get a quick sandwich. The prices are like stepping back in time ! There are pre made sandwiches ( made a few hours ago to help with the long lines at lunch) or you can wait for your sandwich to be made . They have wonderfully fresh great tasting portuguese rolls , I had a roast beef with lettuce and tomato, a bag of chips and a soda and it was $5.50 - wow! Everything was fresh and good . I stopped by to try out the butcher shop on a friend of my mom's recommendation - I will not return. There are no signs posting the prices, and when I asked if they had any sales on beef I was told "we don't do that here- It's all quality hand cut meats so the prices are always the same. We're a mom and pop operation so we don't do that" The other guy behind the counter then cut in and said "we actually have tips for $4.99"... I should've known right there that something wasn't right-but I bit. So here I am now knawing on the stew meat they gave me. Also wasn't digging that the cuts of meat were just scattered along the back counter fully exposed. My recommendation? Spend the extra time driving and head over to Lee's Market in Westport. read more

The the people who work there are so nice and easy going, and very patient with us older ladies. whether you call in an order or you go in person you are treated with respect and like you are family. Stopped in to the market for a quick sandwich while I was in the area for work. I'm a fan of neighborhood delis and this place should have it's picture next to the definition in Merriam Websters. From my basic understanding of the New Bedford area, this embodied the definition of the locale. Small grocery with a great deli. Smells like a fresh butcher shop immediately upon entry. If your a carnivore and enjoy the smell of fresh beef, you'll know what I'm referring to. I grabbed a ready made italain sandwich and I regret not getting a second one. Plus the prices are unreal. Italian sandwich and 20oz coke for UNDER $5. What sold me on this place was the gentleman behind the deli counter (the owner I'm guessing). I stopped in and two guys were getting lunch. I pieced it together they were fisherman and their cards were short on funds and they couldn't pay for lunch. The owner told the lady at the counter to take their name, phone number, and name of the boat they were on, and to come back tomorrow with the cash. Thumbs up to you good sir. I've found Giammalvos a great place to get a delicious and very fresh sandwich with quality ingredients. My only problem is, it is in one of the seediest, rundown neighborhoods in New Bedford. I have avoided it because of this, figuring one day they would move to a better area more becoming of the fine people who work there. Used to come here for sandwiches back when I was in College working summers in New Bedford. Stopped in to see if they still had the deli sandwiches while I was in the area. I think that the prices are still the same as they were 25 years ago and they are just as I remember them. Had an Italian and a roast beef with cheese, lettuce tomato and mayo. With a bottle of water, total was $6.00! Don't let the neighborhood or the looks keep you from trying this place, their meats are the best around. read more

This Market is awesome great meat selection, really good prices, and friendly staff. However, there is a flaw great the workers are friendly, but they do more talking than working. most of them are in the back room talking it up with one another and then i see the staff outside smoking. Giammalvo's Market is a true ONE STOP SHOP! Sandwiches are cheap. We're talking like $2.25 for a good size sub. It's pretty much a time warp when you walk in as it doesn't appear much has changed inside for some time. They have also have experienced butchers on hand to cut up some steaks for dinner. This place is family owned and operated so you can feel good spending some money there. Only downside is if you're someone who doesn't like to speak up you might wait a while. NO NUMBER SYSTEM!!! Had to check it out for myself after attending a local club function where Giammalvo's supplied about sixty sirloin steaks. They were cooked to order over charcoal and let me tell you mine was delicious. All other guest had the same experience, not one complaint. which is unusual for the crowd present. So last week I went and got twenty for a family function. Same results, just compliments and to top it off, the prices were excellent. They even threw in the ends of the shank at no cost. The prices are very reasonable, the sandwiches are great, the people at the register were very nice. It would have gotten 5 stars except for one major thing. When I pulled up a worker was outside. He had plastic gloves on so I assume he worked behind the deli counter. He went in first, okay, but he held the door open so I could follow. He held the door with his gloves on! Have you seen that door? I loved the sandwiches the last few times and was in a rush, so proceeded. There he was behind the counter! Did he change his gloves before handling the food? I doubt it. Got my food, checked out and there he was again at the door. He held it open again. Nice gesture but Ewwwww. As a health care worker would you want me to keep the same gloves on all day? We don't wear them for show so we pass an inspection? We wear them to protect ourselves but also change them always to protect the next patient. Here I am 2 days later and still regretting not saying anything to him. I'm sad because I'm not sure if I'll go back. Too bad. read more
