I've never written a yelp review before I'm so upset I feel the need to warn people off this salon. Absolutely avoid. If you have a Groupon, call to get it refunded or eat up the cost. I had a Groupon when the first negative reviews popped up, but since there were positive ones too and an overall good rating I decided to give it a shot. Big mistake. This salon is a very no frills salon, which is fine if the stylist knows what they are doing. The guy who did my hair was teaching others which is absolutely frightening because this is the worse dye job I've gotten in my life. Firstly I asked him not the dye up to the root and he did. All in all it wasn't what I wanted but it didn't look bad when I was in the salon so I figured I'd give the new style a try. Then I stepped outside into the light- the entire thing had green-blue tints. Seriously, my hair was green. Apparently this is because he put ashy toner in my hair to pull out the warm tones in my hair without asking (which was a trend- barely any communication on what I wanted). First of all, I don't do ashy. It doesn't work with my skin. Secondly he bleached my hair so light the blonde pulled the blue / green tint. My hair wasn't even supposed to be blonde- I asked for a brown balayage. When it came time for my haircut he trimmed it in all of five minutes so it has that uneven grown out look hair gets BEFORE you get a haircut. I went back and he haphazardly put something on the super green pieces but didn't fix the whole thing. I ended up having to tone out the green at home. To add to it he didn't wash whatever he put in my hair properly so I ended up having to wash it out in a bar sink. Shortest lived blowout I've ever had. Now bad highlights are a hard fix already, but when I got home and looked in the mirror I found that the highlights were super patchy. I have SPOTS of bleach near my roots with gaps before the rest of the highlights begin. In multiple spots, which show when I pull my hair back so I can't even do that to hide my weird hair. I've managed to somewhat fix the weird tinge at home but I hate my hair and I've been crying all weekend. I don't trust the salon to fix it as they didn't even properly fix the green. I'm trying to find a master colorist to fix the mistake, and between that, my fixing at home, and this studio itself this has been a super costly mistake. Bottom line, I wish I'd never got my hair done. It was an outgrown balayage that I liked more before. I've never hated my hair so much. I'm afraid I'm going to head out on vacation with this mess if I can't find a better salon to fix it. Amazing experience! Let me start of by saying that I'm super picky about my hair, how it's done and the products used. I found Gibaldi salon through groupon and requested Ceda to do my balayage/highlights and haircut based on all the great reviews and photos. Happy to say that she exceeded my expectations! I wanted a specific bleach blond balayage with root touch-up. I showed her a pic of the color and style of haircut i wanted and she did an amazing job, my hair came out better then the pic. I LOVE my new style and get so many compliments. I would def recommend Gibaldi salon and Ceda is now my only go to person that i trust doing my hair. Would not work on my mothers hair until I came to physically bring the voucher which I had given them over the phone to begin with. Her appointment was at 4:30pm and they had her sitting waiting to apply the dye until 5:15 pm when i walked in. Made a huge scene and said they wont even blow dry unless paying more. Don't even think about walking into this place without an appointment. They store owners sister will give you a hard time about being a walk in customer otherwise. My recommendation to new customers is to buy your Groupon and to make an appointment. The first time I went, was without an appointment. The waxing specialist seemed flustered that I walked in. She asked me to wait a few minutes and then she eventually ushered me to a basement for a wax. She then kept reminding me throughout the wax that body hair was not beautiful as if I wasnt already there for body hair removal. Prior to the visit I purchased a Groupon and when I left, the specialist said I didn't need to purchase the Groupon again but that she would give me the Groupon price during my next visit. I was really excited about her promise and really happy with my wax. The second time I went, I was brought to a much nicer room on the first floor of the salon more apparently the room for waxing. I was a little bothered that as a first time customer I had been brought down to the basement so a shabby and barely private space. The same specialist waxed me equally as well but did not give me the Groupon price like she said she would despite me reminding her to. I ended up paying full price which was quite upsetting. The third time I went to this place I bought a Groupon but did not make an appointment. I showed up at 10:30 in the morning and the same woman told me she could not see me because she had a 10:45 appointment. She said the only available time she had for me was at 4 PM later that day. I asked her if she could squeeze me in before her 10:45 and she said no. I am done with this place. Heed my recommendations! Otherwise this place is a waste of time and money. read more

Initially I had given this place 2 stars, based on what is written below. I had emailed the salon asking for a refund, and the woman wrote back politely and promptly that she would be happy to refund me my money. However, when I went in for the refund, she made a stink about my review and said that she would only give me half of my money back. She made up facts about my last visit to the salon and what I (the customer) should have done differently. She said that because of my review and because she had had to pay the stylist his share, she would only give me half the refund. We argued over this for a while, during which time she kept telling me that I was wrong to leave the review below. I told her she can keep the money if it means that much to her. It's worth noting that she herself is a talented stylist and that she fired the man who ruined my hair. ----------------------------------------------------------- I suggest going here only if you speak Brazilian Portuguese, if you have a VERY basic request, or if you're a returning customer. I walked out and immediately started to cry. I went to a second salon right away (Natura Spa on Steinway) where Telmo fixed the cut like a miracle man. I've had a difficult time find a salon that I love and feel comfortable going back to. So I decided to give this place a try. I should have known to cancel my appointment when I walked in and saw that the barber they had up front had better hair than all the women stylists combined. I had my roots touched up and my hair trimmed. The trim was decent but the color wasn't exactly what I was wanted. While the stylist working with my had the dye in my hair she used rubbing alcohol to remove excess dye from my forehead, ears, neck, etc. As she was doing that, she got a good amount of alcohol in my eyes. After washing it out I was fine but I'd never experienced that before. Very weird and she acted like rubbing alcohol in your eyes is a normal experience at a salon. Keratin Treatment: loved the result! My friend told me about this place, as she had been doing her Keratin treatment here for the past year or two. My hair is naturally straight, but has way too much volume, and gets frizzy when it's humid. A little bad weather and I'd end up with a bad hair day. So I desperately needed something to tame that. I haven't been into pin straight hair, and that's why I thought of the keratin treatment. This was my first time and therefore was very skeptical about it. Straight after the treatment my hair felt too weighed down and was very worried this was it, but after my first wash I loved it. My hair now looks shiny, healthy and not weirdly pin straight but has that naturally straight look. I bought a Groupon for this salon after reading some of the yelp reviews below. I'm always a little nervous when I purchase Groupons for hair, because I never really know what to expect/don't want a nightmare cut. I am though, still somewhat new to the borough of Queens and remain on a quest for my 'new' go-to salon, that's reasonably priced, for a single-process color and great cut. I'm happy to report that my search may have come to an end! Although this salon is in Astoria and I live in Rego Park, it's worth the 25 minute subway ride for sure. I had to wait almost 30 minutes before I was taken, but I wasn't in a rush and didn't mind. On a different day, I may have. This isn't a snazzy salon - it's small and basic - no bells and whistles. If you're looking for fancy, this isn't your place. It's very clean, just not jazzed up. Paola colored and cut my hair - she did a beautiful job. Moreover, she was really lovely. I asked how long she had been working at this salon... she said 3 days!! Don't worry, I then asked how long she'd been cutting hair in general - 25 years! She honestly gave me one of my most favorite cuts to date. My only complaint was that a blow dry was separate and extra. Not Paola's fault, but wish it had been included. Right now it's summer, but in the winter, I refuse to leave a salon with a wet head and would have been annoyed to have to spend the extra money. Lastly, I was so happy with the chosen radio station! After spending a lot of $$$ in so many places around this area, finally a place where I can have my nails done and my hair at the same place without feeling like just another customer. The owner is a nice brazilian lady that listened to whatever I would ask. I have to say, I am kind of difficult, very insecure when comes to my hair!!!!!!!!! I am a control freak! Well, she did exactly what I asked for!!! I had highlights done and It looks great!! I also had my nails done by another brazilian woman and it feels clean and neat! Lovely experience getting a haircut and a color. I bought a Groupon and they didn't hassle me at all. I called to make an appt they squeezed me in cause apparently they're super booked. My experience was really nice though, she cut my hair and single color processed my hair. The ambiance was pretty nice too, fabulous long mirrors, white chairs very "getting my hair did" environment. I love my hair again! I came here on 2/22/17 after buying a groupon for partial highlights, cut and deep conditioning. Like most women, I have anxiety when going to a new salon. I don't usually cut my hair because I fear someone will get scissor happy but when I met Cida I was immediately put at ease. She did exactly what I wanted with the highlights and I was so comfortable that I let her cut 2.5 inches off my hair into a slanted bob. She was so awesome that as she was blowing my hair dry and we were chatting I mentioned that I style my hair with a curling iron often. I had a very poor experience here. I had purchased a Groupon for highlights and cut and made an appointment to come in. Upon entering, no one greeted me other than a vague hand signal for where I should sit. Before any discussion, the woman doing my hair comes over and asks to redeem my Groupon. She never had any discussion with me about what I wanted or what I wanted to look like, not even a "hello" or "how are you"? She started mixing colors together and foiling my hair - when I started to try and ask what colors she was mixing or what I wanted, she brusquely informed me that highlights only come in one color (don't think this is true) and if I don't want my hair bleached then I should not have purchased a highlight deal. I informed her that was not what I wanted, and she said I should try and get Groupon to reimburse me and essentially shooed me out the door. I left the salon extremely dismayed by the poor customer service I had received, and did not get my hair done. Thank goodness Groupon was willing to reimburse me considering she had already redeemed my deal. I will not be coming here again. read more

Got a deal through groupon...$19 haircut regularly $75 I think. I personally would not pay $75 so without the coupon I would not have tried this place. Made an appointment, had to wait about a 1/2 hour, but it was worth the wait. The hairdresser listened to what I wanted and I was very happy with my hair. The people who work there are very friendly as well. I believe they do wax, mani/pedi but they don't have a website with prices or a menu of services at the salon. Bought a Groupon for a cut, single process color and conditioning treatment for $36.75. I'd never been here but between Yelp reviews and other Groupon options, I chose this one. First of all, I called seven times to make an appointment (during their regular business hours), and got a voicemail box five times. The outgoing message didn't say that it was Gibaldi's Salon or anything, just listed the number like you would hear on a cell phone. I spoke with the salon twice, once to book my appointment, once to let them know I was running late. The receptionist didn't speak English well so I was handed off both times. That's totally fine! But it was a little difficult to communicate. The process was a little "rough and tumble." A man applied the color to my hair (similar to the way I use box color on my hair when I color it myself, but I don't have a basis for compassion because this was my first professional hair coloring experience). I wasn't introduced to anyone as my stylist or colorist. I was passed around to a woman who washed my hair after I let the color set in. The wash and conditioning treatment felt great! I was then placed in a chair and the same man who did my color started my cut. He didn't ask to see the picture I originally showed him at the beginning of my appt (I had a picture for my color and one for the cut I wanted)nor where I usually place my part (I've always been asked this). He started to cut and dry (I didn't get a full dry because it wasn't included in the coupon, which is fine because I didn't need or want a blow out). He dried the front with a dryer and round brush after the cut then went to another client to work on her highlights. It was a bit of an odd experience as far as haircuts go but my haircut looks good. The color isn't exactly what I wanted but it feels wonderful. I got my money's worth, I suppose haha. read more

I have been to this salon twice - the first time I went because its right around the corner from my house, and I had a groupon. It was the best haircut I'd ever gotten in my life. This, in large part, encouraged me to go a second time. I did have to wait a while, which was fine since I was expecting another great haircut.. but this time, it was probably the worst haircut I've ever gotten in my life - which was made worse by the styling and blow out by the hairdresser (I looked like I had a mushroom cut walking out of there.. and I have long hair), and they charged me $30-40 for the blow out alone. What was more upsetting, was it clearly looked like a total miss.. yet those working there kept trying to butter me up with smiles and telling me how lovely it was, and proceeded to charge me $120.. for a cut and blowout. Today, without the "styling" it looks a little better, but still misses the mark of what I asked for. I am not sure if I will try this salon again, and I'm not sure if you should either. read more

Cida prepared my color and I sat on a chair, then another customer showed up, she told me to wait because I have a lot of hair and her hair will take only 20 minutes to blow dry. In the next 20 minutes I thought I should call Groupon and cancel my voucher and wrote a bad review but I hold my horses. I will give 4 stars for hair color and hair cut but I have to deduct one for an unprofessional behavior. Had a groupon for single application hair color, cut and conditioner. I was early but i didn't mind waiting the very few minutes. Cida took care of my hair and I was impressed by how friendly she was. First thing she did was ask me what I wanted done color and how short, etc. She didn't say my hair was a mess, *although it was* and for the first time in my life didn't try to sell me something! They had really good products that smelled divine. My hair was not pulled and even though she checked with me about the water temperature, it was just right so there was no need adjust. To some this might seem like nothing, but for an introvert like myself it's heaven. She explained when I picked the color what the end result was going to be and how frequently i would need a touch up. I liked the music, and that it wasn't too loud with people talking. Roomie because it didn't feel too crowded. My cut was exactly the style i wanted and length. Honestly if I had known she was that good i would have been a bit more daring. I bought a Groupon on a whim. Someone close to me passed away and I just wanted something to do. The voucher was for partial high lights. I was able to get an appointment after work. When I walked in I wasn't sure what I was getting into because I saw a group of men and a barber. Then I was greeted by sida. She was very communicative and welcoming. She explained the groupon. This was important to me. I have heard nightmare stories in the past with salons & groupons. She was very detailed. From there it was cake. My hair was done in 2 hours the highlights look wonderful she blow dried my hair and it looked amazing I can only imagine if she were to do with styling my hair. I have been doing Brazilian Bikini for over 10 years now. And the pain is always there. However, today I met Teresa at Gibaldi spa. Believe me when I say that I felt little to no pain at all. She know what she is doing, she is super friendly and makes you feel very comfortable. She had now become my go to waxer. She also gives you tips to prevent ingrown which is a plus. Best cut and color I've had in New York! I've been trying for two years to get the layers I was looking for, and finally found them with Cida. She was so efficient and did exactly what I asked for.
