I can't believe I haven't written a review before now as we've been coming to Gifford Hirlinger for years. There are too many great things to mention: you don't need reservations, you'll have a view of the estate vineyard, the owner or her co-owner/winemaker husband will be your host and are both super friendly and willing to answer ALL of your questions, they are locals, the tasting fee is a choose-your-own donation to the food bank (hear that, other wineries???), we've never been offered fewer than 5 wines (again, hear that?), they make dang good wines, they've replanted and turned their focus to Bordeaux-style wines so the future is exciting, AND their prices are ridiculously reasonable! Oh wait, their club is also awesome, because of course it is! Not a fan of a certain varietal? They'll switch it out, no problem. Just go, it's lovely. read more

This place is everything that is right about human beings no less wine... Go here. Try it, the tasting was free only asking for donations to a food bank if you'd like. The wine was great. The service was fantastic everything is grown on site and served to you by the folks that make it, absolutely fantastic. The people who left 4 stars need to fix themselves. read more

I would give GH six stars if I could! We had such a fantastic visit and can't wait to come support this business again next time we are in the area. Mike is so welcoming, knowledgeable, and humble! He gave us a great rundown of his winery, and we loved learning about his business and the care he had put into it. The wine was fantastic, and it is so fun that many of them are estate grown! The building and scenery are beautiful. We took a few bottles home to enjoy until the next time we can visit GH! Really amazing estate winery right on the OR/WA border! We decided to stop on a whim since it was right off of the main road and are so glad we did. Tastings were complimentary, with the ask to provide a cash donation instead that goes to the local food bank. We were able to walk in without a reservation and the wine maker was conducting the tastings. He was so friendly and answered all of our questions! We ended up getting another two glasses after our tasting. Inside there is standing room only for tastings and outside there are 4/5 tables. read more

Excellent wines, delightful owners, and architecturally creative facility-definitely worth a visit.

What a hidden gem this winery is! We had hired a wonderful driver for the day and when we were running a bit early he asked if we would be interested in an extra stop. Of course we said yes. I am so glad we did because this is where he brought us to. Unlike many stops an appointment is not required at this winery which is great Because it does give you that opportunity to have a little spontaneity. The other thing that was really cool about this winery is that it was the wine maker himself pouring or tasting boxing up memberships and of course making the actual wine. He is really quite the Renaissance man. Like so many places they were sold out of their white wine. If you're a white wine drinker I recommend arriving in Walla Walla much earlier in the season then I did. But what I can tell you is that this place had my favorite Merlot of the entire trip. My friend enjoyed their Cabernet Savignon as well. So if you have the chance to stop in please do. You won't regret it. read more

Family operation that started from passion. He was very knowledgeable and willing to share his story. No tasting fee and all donations for tastings go to the food bank. It didn't have the best ambiance or places to sit. It was more about the wine and his passion for it. Its a small family operation. Not a huge fancy place but quaint, small town feel. Husband and wife operated and owned winery, with an amazing selection and heart you can taste in the wine. A great patio area with very enjoyable quiet surrounding along with a beautiful tasting room. Tasting fee is free with suggested donation to the walla walla food bank. Jack: If they want to drink Merlot, we're drinking Merlot. Miles Raymond: No, if anyone orders Merlot, I'm leaving. I am NOT drinking any f***ing Merlot! Poor Miles, never made it to Gifford Hirlinger. I love, excuse me, I crave the Merlot from this winery. GH is an estate winery - they grow the grapes and tend to the vines themselves- and the lovely tasting room is nestled right in their vineyard. The wines are hand-crafted, properly cared for, and the end result is entirely satisfying. Great aroma, flavor and a pleasantly surprising long finish. All around a nice, approachable wine. And entirely affordable for the level of quality. If Miles ever does make it to Walla Walla, he'd be wise to stop into Gifford Hirlinger while touring the south side of the wine country for an attitude adjustment. Gifford Hirlinger is one of the few wineries in Walla Walla that don't charge a tasting fee. You can find this small family-owned winery on the Washington/Oregon state line. We enjoyed all the wines that were available for tasting that day (especially the Merlot and Petit Verdot), as well as the company of Mike the owner. So much so that we ended up joining the wine club! We look forward to our shipment and our next visit up to Walla Walla! read more

Just had another bottle of the 2007 State Line Red. One of the best wines ever! No really, it is seriously awesome! I noticed on their website that they now have a 2008 State Line Red; I really hope it is just as good as the 2007. read more

No upfront fee for their wine club, and no Seattle area tasting room! Small, family-owned, and literally on the Washington/Oregon state line, with the address on State Line Road, on the southside of the town of Walla Walla. One of the best vintner/vineyard/people experiences I have ever had! So glad I left Walla Walla with a case of various wines. I am now on the hunt for the 2012 State Line Red back here in Seattle! GH is an awesome winery. Mike the owner is super nice and welcoming. I've come back here for the past 3 years for some wine tasting. This year we came for Spring Release. When we got there the crowd just showed up. It was packed, but it was also very fun! They have 7 tastings to try, one from the barrel too (09 malbec)...best of all they didn't charge a tasting fee. I remember in the past that very few wineries charged a tasting fee in walla walla, but all of a sudden they started...it was nice to see GH buck the trend this year. All the wines tasted superb and the cheeses paired nicely with them. I ended up getting a petit verdot, merlot, and a used wine barrel...c'mon who doesn't want one for their house?! My friends like it too and one signed up for the wine club. Everything is just great about this place and that's why its my favorite winery in walla walla. read more

I couldn't even begin to describe how great this place is. Mike, the winemaker, is truly genuine and passionate about every wine he produces. His merlot was out of this world. The best I've had ever! He's super hospitable and knowledgeable about wine and Washington. It was also one of the most humbling experiences in wine tasting. He works hard to produce some amazing wines. We were in Walla Walla, completely lost in the sea of wineries and districts of wineries and it was around 100 degrees when we took a chance on these folks. All the wineries downtown had just been told that pets couldn't be indoors so we were a little worried about our odds of finding a pet-friendly winery. So it was a delight to head out to their estate and walk in the door that was more than happy to usher us in and even offered a bowl of water while we had our tastings. They waived their tasting fee when we bought wine. Friendly service and none of the pretentiousness that usually goes along with wineries. read more

Excellent estate winery right on the state line. Most tastings feature one or two wines that really hit the palate and coax a purchase; all of the five we tasted were well worth the price, so it was difficult to make a "budget " decision, since there was value in all of them.
