Service, selection, and value were all amazing when searching specifically for inflatable Bote kayaks and the 10x10 dock. We were walking around Gig Harbor on a "staycation" and I saw the the 10' kayak from Bote outside. I'd been considering this specific brand for a year or so but never pulled the trigger because they are so expensive. I walked inside to ask about the price. For the unit I saw it was on sale for $599. The dock was $1189 and they had both in stock. Still pricey, but on the Bote website the 10' Zeppelin is normally $1149 and was on a Labor Day sale for $689, but was sold out. I returned an hour later and purchased the kayak. Super happy with the savings and that they had it in stock! I couldn't buy the 10x10' dock this trip because I didn't have the space, but it was still cheaper than I could buy elsewhere. If I had to nitpick, when I bought the kayak they didn't mention and I didn't realize the kayak didn't include a paddle (despite one being on display with the kayak I saw outside the store). No big deal since the price I would have paid online even full price for 2x the cost also didn't include the paddle, but I had to come back later to buy one for another $150. But they had it in stock! I would definitely return. This place was awesome and had stuff in stock I rarely see at a small shop. read more

Hosted travel trip review: Just returned from a week in Montana with Gig Harbor and loved it! Initially I made contact with Gig Harbor thru a YouTube video they posted: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkL0rKtKdkA There was space as a last minute booking for this trip. As it is a hosted trip to Craig, MT for fly fishing the Missouri river in the fall, I met Blake at the destination. Location: We met Blake at the house in a rural part of Montana - town of Craig (population 37). Note that this part of Montana does not have internet, cable TV, local TV, or cell phone service... It's a great way to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life here in Craig... Blake and Doug from the shop were the ambassadors & hosts at the beautiful Craig Trout House where a group stayed for the trip. Accommodations: The house is very large, clean and is fully equipped with all modern amenities. Just remember no internet and no cell phone service. The house did have satellite TV. All rooms are super modern and very new. 2 anglers per room, 2 rooms share one bathroom. Food and wine: Blake knows how to cook and whips up fantastic dishes for the entire group - breakfast, appetizers w/ wine & beer, and dinner every day! I don't know how he does it but he manages to fish all day, return to the house whip up a huge appetizer spread and then cooks a full dinner for all us! Wine and beer included which is awesome because there are no grocery stores in Craig. Blake also cooks a fresh hot breakfast every morning which is perfect when you have to face below freezing weather in the fall mornings. Guiding: Blake also sets us up with the guides provided by Headhunters Fly Shop which have been "filtered" for the best guides. He filters the guides after years of using Headhunters for their guides - a list of "approved" guides only get to guide us. Fishing: Awesome! Most fish I have ever fished in my lifetime! You can do any type of fly fishing: dry, nymph, streamer, swinging, trout spey.... I fished with a trout spey (2 hander) and loved how I caught lots of fish every day. The guides are super pros and will get you onto fish. My guide: Whitney Gould (IFFF THCI & Spey O Rama champion) was a perfect instructor and guide on the water. She taught me all the places I can return to walk and wade to catch monster fish. A big thank you to Blake, Doug, and shop team for hosting this trip and allowing anglers to enjoy the art of catching fish instead of worrying about the logistics. If you want to unplug and get away from the world for a while and enjoy fishing, try this group for a wonderful and memorable trip. read more

I came in here last week with my 2yo lab in tow for her first kayaking trip. I am an intermediate sea kayaker, we are both expert open-water swimmers, and she is a experienced dock-jumper. Still, kayaking together was a big step for both of us, and I was a bit concerned that the loading process might not be possible without the muscle my spouse usually brings to the table. I need not have worried. The staff could not have been more helpful, patient, and just plain kind. As they say, I cannot recommend these guys enough! They definitely set us up for success, and their gear is perfect for a canine ride-along. Hobies have plenty of flat space and cannot be beat for stability. Many thanks to GHFS! Here's a little update for this shop since the reviews are outdated. I just picked up the shittiest line on earth from here. The minute I began setting my pole up, the wire knotted up. Seems like some very cheap shit. Staff are decent, they serve the white people first then everybody else, such as myself, next. We rented tandem kayaks which had the peddles and the rudder. This was a great experience. Not only was it easy to use but the men who helped us were incredibly helpful and patient . My 78 year old gung-ho aunt who really needed some fun after being cooped up from the pandemic was eager to get in and the guys were so patient with her limited abilities. I have a new knee and that too poses issues getting down and up and, again , the men were so helpful and patient and took the boats down and back and helped set us up and explain things. read more

This store is new and located to the left of Spiro's and above Kit Kuhns Jewelery store. Everyone that works here knows their stuff! This is a great place to swing by to find out where the fish are. It's also a fun place to hang out, I often find myself plopping down on one of the chairs and watching one of their fly fishing movies playing on the giant tv. The whole back room is filled with a huge selection of fly tying material and the front has flys (including locally tied ones), rods, reels, line, clothing, etc. They carry Cortland, Ross and Lamson reels and Echo and Scott rods, including spey rods. And are one of the few local retailers that carry Oakley sunglasses and Patagonia clothing. They also offer classes and guided trips which I haven't tried yet but am looking into. Another neat thing is since this place is downtown, it's across the street from the docks! I can't even think of another nearby flyshop that's accessible by boat! All in all, a must if you're into fly fishing, thinking about getting into it, or simply want a cool Gig Harbor souvenir. read more

My wife and I rented a Kayak at this location. The equipment was superior in quality to equipment offered by other rental agencies and the prices were cheaper. The people working there were great and I can say with complete conviction that there is not a better place to rent a kayak in Gig Harbor. As a side note... they also sell what they rent and are invested in making sure the equipment is the best it can be. read more

Stayed in Gig Harbor for 4 days this summer and rented from this shop twice. They carry Hobie Kayaks and paddle boards (hard to find and fun to use). We rented a double kayak for both of us the first time and a single kayak and paddle board the second time. The staff was helpful, there is a nice calm inlet to use the rentals in if you don't want to deal with much chop in the water. The only thing to be aware of is you will personally have to drag your rental (on wheels of course) to the public dock from this location which is about a half mile and then back when you are done on the sidewalk of Gig Harbor city center. Will need to find street parking nearby. Would definitely return to this location if in Gig Harbor again in the future. read more

Asked to rent a kayak 15 minutes after they opened. "Great'' they said, but I needed to make a reservation on their website on my smart phone, despite the presence of a computer at their desk open to a calendar with reservations. Really, this is how I have to do it? I was told yes. After 10 minutes of trying to pull up the not mobile friendly, slow web page, employees kept walking past ignoring me and setting up gear. I stopped an employee and asked if there was WiFi that might make it faster and they said no, but I needed to make a reservation on my phone to get a kayak. Ultimately when I couldn't get through their system, I asked them to direct me to another kayak rental place. Left in disbelief that they'd make it this hard for me to give them my business. read more

I moved back to Western Washington and while I had done a decent amount of fly fishing for trout and bass in freshwater, I had two goals: 1. Catch a Sea Run Cutthroat in Salt Water (specifically Puget Sound) and 2. Catch a Steelhead in a Washington State River. Within a couple months of consulting with the team at Gig Harbor Fly Shop I was consistently catching Sea Run Cutthroat and Coho Salmon in "the salt" as they say. The next fall I made it a goal to finally catch a Steelhead. I went to a spey casting class with Blake locally, then we went out to the Peninsula Rivers for another course on all things Steelhead. While I didn't catch a Steelhead on this trip (and wasn't supposed to), the next week I went out myself and practiced what Blake had taught me and caught my first dime bright Steelhead. These guys are the best, they WILL set you up for success whether you or new to fly fishing or experienced they will put you on fish, either by guide or by advice and map. AND, I have never felt more comfortable being able to take advice from a retailer without being concerned about getting sold expensive items that I don't need or would be wasted on my proficiency level. Blake and his guys WILL NOT try and sell you items you don't need and if you ask them anything you will get the absolute straight truth. One more thing, if you hate feeling like an amateur among experts, they go out of their way to let you know they were starters at some point as well. read more

This was hands down one of the worst experiences of which all four people in my party has ever had. We rented two tandem Hobie kayaks. We were not warned by the staff where we should and should not take them. They are completely inappropriate sea vessels to be taken out in this area of open sea because the currents are way too strong. All four of us are very strong, active individuals and very familiar with water activities, and we were struggling to safely navigate the boat-laden channel in the rip tides. When we went back to the shop to return the kayaks we told the staff (either Jake or David) replied "wow yeah, that's a real bummer" and then walked inside. Absolutely terrible customer service and a lack of responsibility for keeping customers safe. What's a real bummer is that I've never been so upset that I've had to leave a bad review in my entire life except for today. Left feeling completely taken advantage of, ripped off and just generally sad seeing as we were all so excited for this experience. read more

This might be a wonderful shop for clothing, etc. but our experience renting kayaks was a joke. In retrospect, we should have known better. Obviously the store owners saw an opportunity to make some additional money so they display kayaks out front. There is no instruction or direction. The only thing they make certain you sign is the waiver of liability. You have to roll your own kayak down a hill at least a block (and that means roll it back up the hill when you're done) and you have no idea where to put your kayak in the water. For visitors and new residents to the community, this is a real disappointment. If you're looking to specifically kayak, this is NOT the store to enjoy a kayak adventure in the harbor. read more
