Be sure to bring snacks and drinks, especially with the hot weather going right now in the month of June 2026. Pick up after yourself so we could continue to have this beauty, please! Watch out for the military police. Multiple sites to rest at, including summer cove where I was at with my Asian migration group, hehe! Most of the surrounding shore that makes up American Lake looks to be private and this park seems to be more of a boat launching point for the general public to use for utilizing the lake. The park itself is quite small and that also goes for the parking lot as well. The day I went was a warm day so the park was full as well as the designated lots. Filled lots for certain parks often times in neighborhoods aren't really that big of a deal because you can use curbside parking that is usually nearby but in this part of Lakewood there is no curbside parking at all and it looks like parking in front of someone's house doesn't seem like it's a good idea because one gets the idea you are parking in their yard and not on a curb. So what I did was park in an area that was designated for a school and carefully looked for any parking restrictions given the amount of time it would take for me to walk to the park, check it out for a bit then walk back. This proved to not be an issue parking here but the walk was a bit long. Fortunately the day that I picked to go to American Lake was a clear day and if you walk to the boat docks you can get a good view of Mount Rainier and the the lake itself is very pretty. But don't assume you can get a clear view of the mountain all of the time. Overcast is not unusual. There is also a decent looking beach here as far as lake beaches go but like everything the day I went it was fairly crowded. The boat ramp was in full use as well and a line of cars were waiting to unload as well. Definitely a very busy park the day I went despite it's size. Aside from the crowds this park isn't too bad and if you can enjoy the view of Mount Rainier and the water I'd definitely bump that aspect of the park up to four stars.

Swimming, canoeing, kayaking and fishing is all allowed at this large lake. And this county park is also dog friendly. My husband, our little girl dog and I stopped by this park on a Thursday afternoon, a little before 1 pm. The reason why we came here was because we were looking for a park with barbecue grills because we had just purchased some raw, fresh oysters and clams from Minterbrook Oyster Farm and wanted to cook some up for lunch. A local at a nearby convenience store suggested this park and so we headed on our way (be sure to purchase charcoal if you want to use the park grills). Parking is plentiful, plenty of parks to provide shade and lots of grass available for our little girl to mark her territory. With a handful of barbecue grills, we decided to pick one by the volleyball court. My husband set up the grill and did the cooking (that is what husbands are for) and my little girl and I explored this large park in the meantime. There are restrooms by the playground, but I did not use it. Also during our visit, a park employee told us that he had to close the restrooms (due to some kind of plumbing problem) and that porta-potties will be delivered later today. This is a great park to have a family get together, picnic, friend gathering (play volleyball or bring your kayaks and launch off of here), fly your drone here or toy planes and play with your dog(s) here. If I lived closer, I would be out here on a regular basis.

Boat was ready to go as communicated and we hit three locations, all with large sturgeon. Gear was in great condition, all the same rods and reels. Always baited with fresh bait and in the water as soon as possible. My 10 Y/O son was ecstatic to haul in a large sturgeon and Mark was great with him as well. Definitely coming back to Mark for Halibut, Tuna, Salmon, Bottomfish and more Sturgeon!

The paid $5 lot fills up fast in the summer however there is street parking only 1/2 mile away and you can just park/walk over. You have to cross train tracks to get over to the beach and park which is worth mentioning. The playground has an area for older and younger kiddos. Restrooms are available, but not always well kept. A lot of picnic tables throughout and space to make your own picnic area if you wanted. Overall: I recommend in the summer - come earlier if you prefer it a little less crowded!

There is a grass area and a long strip of rocky beach to sit near the waterfront. The restrooms are fairly clean. They offer daily kayak rentals. If you find your perfect spot on the beach you may see some wildlife, like various seabirds and seals. Overall, it's a clean and family friendly beach that feels safe. There is lots of parking but it does get filled up quickly on a nice sunny day. Go early to get a good parking spot!

Although you may not be able to get anything close to the beach. There is a nice "boardwalk" to walk or bike along and offers a scenic view. The beach area is a decent size and can accommodate many families but be warned that it is rocky and pebbly. There was a private event happening in a building there. They also had several bathrooms. A cute little cafe and a place to rent kayaks. It was just a nice vibe. If you didn't want to sit on the beach area there were plenty of benches to just sit and enjoy the view as well.
