I love this restaurant! I'm not saying that I love everything on the menu, there isn't one single restaurant out there that I can say that about though, not even the one I drive 2 hrs to Menominee for. Giliberto's has some pretty amazing gems that none of the other Mexican restaurants in Roch have. if you have been disappointed with or never tried this place I recommend the Chilaquiles, i like it with the verde/green sauce and add bacon, it's soooo good. But you can choose red sauce and add a different meat, or go no meat. If you're more in the mood for tacos, I was very impressed with their birria tacos. They had plenty of onions, cilantro, and the limes on the side. I love this version of Birria, it wasnt a sopping mess and still full of flavor. My go to burrito is the Adobada, but I do recommend to ask for some lime on the side because it's even better with the lime juice. They have a grood Shrimp cocktail, and for dessert the flan has never disappointed me. I do really love the mango with the chamoy and Tajín, however I have had some pretty under ripe mango once, but fruit can be tough to get in perfect season. I've had a few dishes I was not fond of, but you know, even if I pick something off the menu at let's say Bdubs, or McDonald's, or Texas road house and I don't like it, that isn't going to stop me from going back to order the food that I do like. I know the last few months have been hard for this restaurant, I really do not want to see Roch lose them. Again, there isn't another restaurant in Roch that I have found that makes some of these recipes. So if you have a chance to try them out, or give them a second chance, maybe try some of the items I mentioned. Hope you enjoy what you try read more

Lately the food has been poor In portion size when they first open I remember how generous the amount was and later on kept getting smaller. At first the amount was reasonable, like my favorite chicken and rice burrito but lately it's just getting ridiculously small for a $12 chicken and rice burrito. I also used to get the beef burrito in the beginning but now it's 1/3 less than it was opening week. Just dissatisfying to look at and eat. For service I understand that there aren't many people who can work so I try my best to appreciate the hardwork they put in & tip when I can, but lately it's been feeling off putting when I eat inside. Feels like I'm singled out for no reason, it makes me feel out of place now than before. It was so beautiful and festive before. Nice, welcoming, & Delicious! Such an extensive menu, hard to decide in line. They have specials in Spanish but counter girl needed to interpret. One was street corn on cob. Ordered Taco Adobada no onion $3.50 and Taco Carne Asada no onion. Adobada was dry meat. They have a salsa bar and pineapple to add to your Taco. They also give you 4 Taco tortillas corn , so you have enough meat for 4 tacos. The Carne Asada one was better. Even yummier with pineapple and mild salsa. The Horchata was very basic, I've had better. They also have breakfast items served all day. I'd return as food was really good. Tip: add English meaning to specials board. Second time here. I chose the Chile Relleno combo with beans and rice and a pork Tamale for later. Different from opening week they have the salsas and sides labelled. They added a salsa for chips. I will warn you as a northern midwesterner.....their mild salsa is what we would consider medium. Thus, if you want a tamed down version I suggest mixing 1/3 mild salsa with 2/3 pico de gallo from the salsa bar; then you will be in chip dipping heaven. As one can see the portions are huge so it appears I have left overs for supper tonight. When I walked in at 11am a gentleman was wiping tables. The floor in front of the salsa bar could use a spot sweep because someone came in with mud on their shoes. Now down to the food. From time order was placed until I received it was 20 minutes. They did 3 large orders in the dining room and 4 cars through the drive thru. In keeping with the last review, really authentic, thus if your expecting the taco bell americanized version of a Mexican restaurant you will be let down. The batter on the Chile was flavorful. I haven't dug into the rice and beans as I am 3/4 of the way done with the chile, guac, and pico box and I am stuffed as it came with 4 corn tortillas as well. The edges of the tortillas were a little dried out. If I am going to get really nit picky, the guac and red sauce need a pinch of salt. I sprinkled a salt packet over the whole container after tasting and it went from good to wonderful. All in all, I was expecting to walk away with a tamale as a late afternoon snack and instead I have a whole second meal for $22. Next time I am in Rochester I will stop again for the next Gilibertos adventure.....what do you suggest I try next? Maybe the ultimate gringo Mexican restaurant item....steak fajitas? read more

i have been here multiple times, and the reason I go back is for the carnitas tacos! Each taco has a large portion of meat, and good amount of cilantro and onions with a guacamole like sauce. Make sure to ask for the red hot sauce, as it has lots of flavor and a little bit of heat! Pretty disappointing. I was so excited when I heard we would have a 24/7 Mexican place. I stopped by one morning and got a steak breakfast burrito. I was not impressed at all. Before we went there for the first time, I told my wife this place appears to be positioned above a Taco Bell, but below a full service Mexican sit down restaurant. And that's kind of my problem with it. It may be a trend, because I see other restaurants like Taco Lab (where I've never eaten, but I looked at their menu) appear to be in the same market niche. Our "go to" Mexican restaurant in Rochester is, and pretty much always has been, Fiesta Cafe and Bar on N. Broadway. So my opinion of Gilbertos is in comparison to Fiesta. In summary, Gilbertos vast menu is comparable to a full-service restaurant. The food, in my opinion is below that served in a full-service restaurant. My meal was without much flavor, even with the hottest sauce on top. The Mexican rice was pretty okay, but the beans had the consistency of pudding. Nothing in my order was as hot (temperature wise) as it should've been. Barely above lukewarm. The prices are pretty comparable to a full service restaurant. We paid $41 (before tip) for the two of us. The service is, well, there isn't any. You order and pay for your meal at the counter, like most fast food places. They give you a pager, and when it goes off, you go and get your own food. The food is served in Styrofoam to-go containers and the "silverware" is plastic. There is a condiment bar, which is nothing to write home about. Three different kinds of salsa, bottles of hot sauce, cubed pineapple, jalapeño and (mostly) carrots, chopped tomato and onion. For soft drinks they give you a paper cup and you fill it yourself. There is no alcohol served. The ambience of the restaurant is like any fast food place. Mostly booths, with some tables. Very few Mexican decorations of any kind. In summary, the prices are comparable to a full-service Mexican restaurant, the food isn't quite on par, and the ambience and service is a big negative. If I want fast, Mexican food, I'll go to Taco Bell. If I want to sit down at a full service, Mexican restaurant and have a beer or margarita with my meal, I'll go to Fiesta. read more

This was our first time at Gilberto's - it will certainly not be our last! The food was absolutely authentic, wonderfully fresh, and muy delicioso! The taco menu was seriously huge - lots of choices from basic to adventurous! We had fish, lengua, carnitas, adobada, and carne asada...all were so good! The place is clean, there is nice music, and the staff were helpful - one gentleman even came out from behind the counter and opened the door for us when we arrived. There was a nice "toppings bar" with different salsas - the avocado salsa is awesome, and the hottest salsa packed amazing heat, but also fantastic flavor. Really, the only question I had was how is this place not packed on a Saturday night?! We may come back again tomorrow - it was really that good! read more

It's Tuesday, so let's try Gilberto's! Be prepared. It's more traditional food, not the Americanized Mexican fare you usually get. Our party had 6 adults and a 2-year old. Our order was $108. But... It took 25 minutes.....to get most of our order....it was incomplete. As an example, no tortillas with my chile relleno. After standing at the counter, we finally got our chips and queso. It's nice to have a late night food option after 10pm. Their extensive menu with lots of options makes them stand out from the few late night bar bites and food trucks in town. I love Mexican food. I worked at a upscale Mexican restaurant for 5 years. When I seen the New Gilbertos 24 hr restaurant open up in North rochester mn. I was excited. So I went for lunch. I ordered a shredded beef chimichonga .when I got my order delivered to my table on 2 plates one beans n rice the other a huge chimi with crema and guacamole and lettuce. I went over to the free salsa bar to dress it up. The Pico de gio was not fresh wilty cilantro Looked old.any way got some salsa tore into my chimi just to find about a1/2 lb of fajita vegetables n about 3 Oz. Of shredded beef the vegetables were hard. no sauce on the chimi. I picked through it ate the beans n rice. Mabie they thought the vegetables were special .not going back. I've rolled chimis with 4oz meat 4oz rice and a cheese n onion mix topped with a sauce and cheese. Mabie I was expecting my favorite. Didn't help that I couldn't understand the server. read more

We've been to Gilberto's twice, once for lunch and once for breakfast. You order at the counter and they bring your food out to you when it's ready. The restaurant is comfortable and inviting. There's a bar with salsas, and fresh pico and pineapple. The portions are large and the food is excellent. We felt like we got a great value for the price paid.
