    Birthday cheesecake!
    Ernest H.

Ordered birthday dinner delivered for my wife plus the cheesecake with strawberries and whip cream. I mentioned it was her birthday and they even put a candle on top. The taco salads were excellent, as always. Yeah, we love Gillies!

Gillies is a Flint/Mount Morris staple. Open 24/7 and serving 4/5 food all night. Great for a late night snack.

Our breakfast was delicious, generous, and came out remarkably quickly, even though the place was absolutely hopping (always a great sign). The teamwork among the waitstaff was impressive. Our table was greeted right away by one waitress who got us started and let us know our server would be with us shortly. Shonda, our waitress, was friendly, upbeat, and genuinely welcoming--she even shared tips on local vinyl record shops. Brothers offers a wide variety of flavored coffees and fresh-squeezed juices, and the portions are huge. One thing I always notice in a restaurant is the mood of the other diners, and everyone here seemed happy. Many were clearly regulars who know the staff well. Great food, fast service, and a joyful atmosphere. We'll absolutely be back.

The batter is thin, crispy, and not overly heavy, and the flavor feels like something straight out of a home kitchen. This isn't fast-food fried chicken... this is Sunday dinner at grandma's. The meal itself is a lot of food for around $17: four pieces of chicken, real mashed potatoes with homemade gravy, a vegetable, a potato, plus a salad and a cup of homemade chicken noodle soup with those old-school egg noodles. Everything tasted fresh and well-seasoned, not processed or rushed. We also tried the fried mushrooms everyone talks about, and they lived up to the hype. They use large portobello mushrooms, which makes a huge difference. No watery, soggy bite like you get at a lot of places, just a clean, meaty texture with a crispy coating. The atmosphere is calm and cozy. Lighting is dim enough to feel relaxed, and with only about 20 tables, it's not loud or chaotic. No kids running wild or constant traffic in and out, just a laid-back, "take your time" kind of vibe. The space has a log cabin feel with exposed wood, vintage décor, and black-and-white photos. The tables and chairs aren't fancy, but they're clean and fit the nostalgic charm. Service was great during our visit. Our waitress was attentive, checked on us regularly, took our order quickly, and everything came out hot. I've seen mixed reviews about inconsistent service, but our experience (first visit) was very positive. There's also plenty of parking, which is always a win. Between the generous portions, fair pricing, and genuinely homemade feel, this is the kind of place you come back to. They also offer daily specials and make many of their own desserts. I'll definitely be back to try the coconut cream pie. Overall: Comfort food done right, with a cozy, no-frills atmosphere and excellent value.

The turkey they use is smoked and tastes amazing! The gravy smothered over the sandwich and mashed potatoes adds even more flavor. I ordered a side of green beans with the meal, and they tasted good - not canned. The turkey club was ordered without tomato and came out as ordered - it was huge and also had the smoked turkey on it. So good! Coleslaw tasted good as did the cheese sticks. Our server was attentive and kept checking on us. She kept the drinks coming - even after we paid our bill. Love that they check on you, even after you have paid. The inside is still outdated and the seats are not the most comfortable, but that's fine. The restaurant and restrooms were clean. I need to come back here again real soon!

It wasn't busy when we arrived on a Monday evening, but what we ended up experiencing was honestly amazing. We sat down and asked for wine recommendations, and our server James immediately stood out as knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about what he was serving. He recommended the Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon. We were not expecting much because the last few bottles we ordered at other restaurants were just okay, but this recommendation was absolutely on point. The wine was excellent and exactly the kind of red we enjoy. My fiancée wanted burrata. I usually don't care for it but agreed, and what came out was a seared burrata with sauce that was rich, warm, and seriously delicious. That was the beginning of a great night. James brought us bread with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and spices, and we loved it. I think it was sourdough but I'm not an expert, I just know we kept eating it. For entrées, my fiancée chose the lasagna and I went with the chicken marsala. The timing was perfect, everything arrived hot and fresh just as we finished the appetizer and our first glass of wine. The chicken marsala was incredible. The seasoning was perfect, the sauce coated the spaghetti beautifully, and the mushrooms tasted fresh and flavorful. Easy 10 out of 10 for me. My fiancée loved the lasagna too and said it tasted homemade in the best way, exactly what she wanted after a long day working at the hospital. We also had the chance to meet the chef behind the food, Chef Khalilah, and she was wonderful to talk to. You can tell she puts real passion into what she does, and it shows in every bite. For dessert, my fiancée went with her classic tiramisu to end the night. I wanted an affogato even though it wasn't on the menu, and James said he had espresso and vanilla ice cream and would figure it out. He absolutely came through. Total hero moment. Honestly, this place deserves recognition. Great food, excellent service, and a warm, welcoming vibe. People don't always think of Flint as a destination for a great dinner, but they're missing out. Sauce Italian American Kitchen delivered an awesome experience from start to finish. Huge kudos to James, Chef Khalilah, and the whole team. We'll definitely be back.

I have to state this because they always do this. When my order was delivered I received the Verdura and one House Salad, not my two Caesar Salads. In addition, the House Salad was on top of the hot pasta and was therefore hot as well. Furthermore, the pasta was swimming in sauce. I called the restaurant and spoke with a gentleman. I believe his name was James. I explained the errors to him. He did not apologize at all. In fact, he told me that I either did not enter the note appropriately, or it did not come through on their end. He said that he bagged up my order. He also said nothing about the salad screwups. I told him that putting cold salads on top of hot pasta is their common practice with my orders, he said nothing. I told him that I was bringing this to his attention so that they could improve this practice. Once again, no response. I said to him that not putting cold salads on top of hot pasta should be common sense. He replied with, "I'm not going to have this discussion with you. You can take it up with DoorDash. Well, I am going to take it up with DoorDash and Sauce just lost a frequent and loyal customer. If he bagged up my order he obviously did not check to ensure the order was accurate. His attitude sucked: no apology and blaming the customer. Disgraceful! P.S. No salad dressing with the House Salad.

He definitely saved our meal and opinion of this place. The food was amazing. We haven't had Cracker Barrel, like I said in some time, and we received some food that was deliciously prepared and exactly what we wished for. The chicken and dumplings were delicious with the dumplings, not being overcooked or slimy. The plate was more than enough to fill your stomach. I got the country fried and it was delicious. The sawmill gravy on top was plentiful and a perfect consistency. The waiter even brought over an extra bowl of sawmill gravy for the biscuits we had ordered. The side dishes that we ordered being macaroni and cheese, hash brown casserole, greens, sweet baby carrots were all delicious. I will see if you've never had the greens, you should. You know who I'm talking about. The counter person was absolutely wonderful dealing with us and our questions. Now onto the important stuff. Burgers are two patties and massive. You are definitely getting your money's worth. We split 3 different ones amongst us and they were all good: the mushroom, the southwest, and the brunch. The meat itself is a little flavorless but that might be cause typically I have the meat cooked to medium and these were well done. We weren't asked how we want them cooked so I'm assuming this is just how the cook all the patties. What I didn't like were the fries. They were cold and chewy like they have been sitting around for a while. My son ordered a caramel and it was absolutely delicious. So that was a huge positive.
